FUEL RECOMMENDATION

CAUTION

Petrol/Ethanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and ethanol (grainalcohol), also known as gasohol, are com-mercially available in some areas. Blends ofthis type may be used in your vehicle if theyare no more than 5% ethanol. Make surethis petrol-ethanol blend has octane ratingsnot lower than those recommended for petrol.Petrol/Methanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and methanol(wood alcohol) are also commercially avail-able in some areas. DO NOT USE fuels con-taining more than 5% methanol under anycircumstances. Fuel system damage or ve-hicle performance problems resulting fromthe use of such fuels are not the respon-sibility of MARUTI SUZUKI and may not becovered under Warranty.

Fuels containing 5% or less methanol maybe suitable for use in your vehicle if theycontain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.

NOTE:If you are not satisfied with the driveabilityor fuel economy of your vehicle when youare using a petrol/alcohol blend, you shouldswitch back to unleaded petrol containing noalcohol.

The fuel tank has an air space toallow for fuel expansion in hotweather. If you continue to add fuelafter the filler nozzle has automati-cally shut off or an initial blowbackoccurs, the air chamber will becomefull. Exposure to heat when fullyfuelled in this manner will result inleakage due to fuel expansion. Toprevent such fuel leakage, stop fill-ing after the filler nozzle has auto-matically shut off, or when using analternative non automatic system, initial vent blowback occurs.

CAUTION

3-1

Be careful not to spill fuel contain-ing alcohol while refuelling. Fuelscontaining alcohol can cause paintdamage, which is not covered underWarranty.

You must use unleaded petrol with an oc-tane number (RON) of 91 or higher.

• Reduce your speed and changedown to a lower gear before go-ing down a long or steep hill. Alower gear will allow the engineto provide braking. Avoid ridingthe brakes or they may overheat, resulting in brake failure.

• When driving on slippery roads,be sure to slow down beforechanging down. Excessive and orsudden changes in engine speedmay cause loss of traction, whichcould cause you to lose control.

• Make sure that the vehicle is com-pletely stationary before youchange into reverse.

WARNING

• To help avoid clutch damage, donot use the clutch pedal as afootrest while driving or use theclutch to keep the vehicle station-ary on a hill. Depress the clutchfully when changing gear.

• When changing gears or startingoff, do not race the engine. Rac-ing the engine can shorten enginelife and prevent smooth operation.

BRAKING

The distance needed to bring any vehicleto a halt increases with the speed of thevehicle. The braking distance needed, forexample, at 60 km/h will be approximately4 times greater than the braking distanceneeded at 30 km/h. Start to brake thevehicle when there is plenty of distancebetween your vehicle and the stopping point, and slow down gradually.

06-76A015A

7-4

WARNING

If water gets into the brake drums, brake performance may become poorand unpredictable. After drivingthrough water or washing the under-side of the vehicle, test the brakeswhile driving at a slow speed to seeif they have maintained their normaleffectiveness. If the brakes are lesseffective than normal, dry them byrepeatedly applying the brakes whiledriving slowly until the brakes haveregained their normal effectiveness.

Servo assisted brakesYour vehicle has servo assisted brakes. If servo assistance is lost due to a stalledengine or other failures, the system is stillfully operational on reserve power and youcan bring the vehicle to a complete stopby pressing the brake pedal once andholding it down. The reserve power ispartly used up when you depress thebrake pedal and reduces each time thepedal is pressed. Apply smooth and evenpressure to the pedal. Do not pump thepedal.

WARNING

Even without reserve power in thebrake system, you can still stop thevehicle by pressing the brake pedalharder than normally required. How-ever, the stopping distance may belonger.

Do not switch off the engine whilevehicle is in motion. e.g. This willcause loss of vaccum assistanceleading to reduction of braking ofsubstantially.

WARNING

WARNINGOn loose surface where the wheelscan easily loose traction (such asgravel etc.) the stopping distance re-quired for your vehicle may be greaterthan for a comparable vehicle with aconvontional brake system. Allow forextra stopping distance when drivingon loose surface.

The future performance and reliabilityof the engine depends on the care andrestraint exercised during its early life.It is especially important to observe thefollowing precautions during the ini-tial 1000 kms of vehicle operation.• After starting, do not race the en-

gine. Warm it up gradually.• Avoid prolonged vehicle operation at

a constant speed. Moving parts willbreak in better if you vary your speed.

• Start off from a stop slowly. Avoidfull throttle starts.

• If possible, avoid hard braking, es-pecially during the first 320 kms ofdriving.

• Do not drive slowly with the trans-mission in a high gear.

• Drive the vehicle at moderate enginespeeds.

CAUTION

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

06-76A044A

The purpose of the catalytic converter isminimize the amount of harmful pollutants inyour vehicle exhaust. Use of leaded fuel invehicles equipped with catalytic convertersis prohibited, because lead deactivates thepollutant reducing components of the cata-lyst system. The converter is designed to last the life ofthe vehicle under normal usage and whenunleaded fuel is used. No special mainte-nance is required on the converter. How-ever, it is very important to keep the en-gine properly tuned. Engine misfiring, whichcan result from an improperly tuned engine,

may cause overheating of the catalyst. Thismay result in permanent heat damage to thecatalyst and other vehicle components.

To minimize the possibility of catalystor other vehicle damage:• Maintain the engine in the proper

operating condition.• In the event of an engine malfunc-

tion, particularly one involving en-gine misfire or other apparent lossof performance, have the vehicleserviced promptly.

• Do not turn off the engine or inter-rupt the ignition when the transmis-sion is in gear and the vehicle is inmotion.

• Do not try to start the engine bypushing or towing the vehicle, orcoasting down a hill.

• Do not idle the engine with anyspark plug wires disconnected orremoved, such as during diagnos-tic testing.

• Do not idle the vehicle for prolongedperiods if idling seems rough orthere are other malfunctions.

• Do not allow the fuel tank to getnear the empty level.

WARNING

Be careful where you park anddrive; the catalytic converter andother exhaust components can getvery hot. As with any vehicle, do notpark or operate this vehicle in areaswhere combustible materials such asdry grass or leaves can come incontact with a hot exhaust system.

WARNINGNever drive the vehicle when the wa-ter level on the road is more than 300mm. Water may enter into the enginecausing damage in engine. It will notbe covered under warranty.

IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

The following instructions will help you toimprove fuel economy.

Avoid excessive idling:If you are to wait for more than a minutewhile you are parked, stop the engine andstart it again later. When warming up acold engine, do not allow the engine to idleor apply full throttle unitil the engine hasreached operating temperature. Allow theengine to warm up by driving.

Avoid “fast” starts:Fast starts away from lights or stop signswill consume fuel unnecessarily andshorten engine life. Start off slowly.

Avoid unnecessary stops:Avoid unnecessary deceleration and stop-ping. Try to maintain a slow, steady speedwhenever possible. Slowing down and thenaccelerating again uses more fuel.

Keep a steady cruising speed:Keep as constant a speed as road andtraffic conditions will permit.

Keep the air cleaner clean:A dirty air cleaner will cause too much fuelsupply to the engine for the amount of airbeing supplied. The result is waste of fueldue to incomplete combustion.

Keep weight to a minimum:The heavier the load, the more fuel thevehicle consumes. Take out any luggageor cargo when it is not necessary.

Keep tyre pressures correct:Underinflation of the tyres can waste fueldue to increased running resistance of thetyres. Keep your tyres inflated to the

06-60G087A

correct pressure shown on the label locatedbelow the driver’s side door latch striker.

HIGH-SPEED DRIVING

Wear Your Seat Belts at All Times. The driver and all passengersshould be properly restrained at alltimes, using the seatbeltsprovided. Refer to the“SEATBELTS” section forinstructions on proper use of theseat belts.Never drive while under theinfluence of alcohol or other drugs.Alcohol and drugs can seriouslyimpair your ability to drive safely, greatly increasing the risk of injuryto yourself and others. You shouldalso avoid driving when you aretired, sick, irritated, or under stress.

When driving at a high-speed, pay attentionto the following:

Stopping distance progressively increaseswith vehicle speed. Apply the brakes farenough ahead of the stopping point to allowfor the extra stopping distance. On rainy days, “Aquaplaning” can occur.“Aquaplaning” is the loss of direct contactbetween the road surface and the vehicle’styres due to a water film forming betweenthem. Steering or braking the vehicle while“Aquaplaning” can be very difficult, and lossof control can occur. Keep speed downwhen the road surface is wet.At high speeds, the vehicle may be af-fected by side winds. Therefore, reducespeed and be prepared for unexpected buf-feting, which can occur at the exits oftunnels, when passing by a cut of a hill,or when being overtaken by large vehicles, etc.

DRIVING ON HILLS

When climbing steep hills, the car maybegin to slow down and show a lack ofpower. If this happens, you shouldchange to a lower gear so that the en-gine will again be operating in its normalpower range. Change rapidly to preventthe car from losing momentum. When driving down a hill, the engine shouldbe used for braking by shifting to nextlower gear.

Specified oilBe sure that the engine oil you use comesunder the quality classification of SG+, SH,SJ or SL. Select the appropriate oil viscos-ity according to the above chart. For temperatures above –4OF (–20OC), wehighly recommended you use SAE 5W30 oil.

Oil Level CheckIt is important to keep the engine oil at thecorrect level for proper lubrication of yourvehicle’s engine. Check the oil level with thevehicle on a level surface. The oil levelindication may be inaccurate if the vehicleis on a slope. The oil level should bechecked either before starting the engine orat least 5 minutes after stopping the engine.

Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe oil off witha clean cloth, insert the dipstick all theway into the engine, then remove it again. The oil on the stick should be between theupper and lower limits shown on the stick. If the oil level indication is near the lowerlimit, add enough oil to raise the level tothe upper limit.

CAUTIONWhen adding or replacing coolant, use a high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze diluted with distilledwater. If the lowest ambienttemperature in your area isexpected to be -150C (50F) orabove, make the antifreezeconcentration of the mixture youuse at least 30% but no more than50%. If –160C (30F) or below, makethe concentration at least 50%. Ifthe 50% concentration does notprovide adequate protectionagainst freezing, follow theinstructions on the antifreezecontainer to obtain the desiredfreezing point. When putting the cap on thereservir tank, line up the arrow onthe cap and the arrow on the tank,or coolant can leak out.

For regular maintenance, you do not needto remove the radiator cap. But, if you need to remove the radiatorcap for some reason, do as follows:

When the engine is cool, remove theradiator cap by turning it slowly to the leftuntil a "stop" is felt. Do not press downwhile turning the cap. Wait until any pres-sure is released, then press down on thecap and continue turning it anticlockwise.

09-60G099A

WARNING

It is hazardous to remove the radia-tor cap when the water temperatureis high, because scalding fluid andsteam may be blown out under pres-sure. Wait until the coolant tempera-ture has lowered before removing thecap.

Coolant Replacementif you simply drain and refill the coolingsystem, much air will be trapped in thecooling system and the engine will beoverheated.

7. Always prefer tubeless tyre mountingmachine. In case of manual mounting-tyre/wheel rim damage may occur.

8. In case of any problem, please get intouch with MARUTI SUZUKIauthorised dealer.

Wheel BalancingIf the vehicle vibrates abnormally on smoothroad, have the wheel balanced at MarutiSuzuki Authorized Workshop.

Wheel AlignmentIn case of abnormal tyre wear or pullingtowards one side, have the wheel aligned atMaruti Suzuki Authorized Workshop.

Tubeless TyresThe vehicle is equipped with TubelessTyres. In tubeless tyre, a thin layer of butylrubber is used for lining the inside of thetubeless tyre. This layer is to prevent air lossand fulfilling the purpose of tube. The airpressure is maintained by the sealingbetween tyre bead and wheel rim. Tubelesstyres are having advantage of slow air lossand preventing sudden deflation whiledriving.

Care and maintenance tips for tubelesstyres1. Always maintain recommended

inflation pressure. Driving continouslyat low inflation pressure can lead totyre damage.

2. In case any leakage is found, checkfor any nail penetration/valve coredamage or rim bent. Damaged wheelmust not be used.

3. In case tyre has run at low pressue, itmust be inspected for any defect.

4. Whenver new tyre is fitted, replace thevalve.

5. If continous high speed driving isrequired, increase tyres pressure by5 psi over recommended inflationpressure.

BODY WORK CARE

BODY WORK CARE

CORROSION PREVENTIONIt is important to take good care of yourvehicle to protect it from corrosion.

Listed below are instructions for how to main-tain your vehicle to prevent corrosion. Pleaseread and follow these instructions carefully.

Important Information About CorrosionCommon causes of corrosion

1) Accumulation of road salt, dirt, moisture,or chemicals in hard to reach areas ofthe vehicle underbody or frame.

2) Chipping, scratches and any damage totreated or painted metal surfaces result-ing from minor accidents or abrasion bystones and gravel.

Environmental conditions which accel-erate corrosion

1) Road salt, dust control chemicals, sea airor industrial pollution will all accelerate thecorrosion of metal.

2) High humidity will increase the rate ofcorrosion particularly when the tempera-ture range is just above the freezing point.

3) Moisture in certain areas of a vehicle for

an extended period of time may promotecorrosion even though other body sec-tions may be completely dry.

4) High temperatures will cause an acceler-ated rate of corrosion to parts of thevehicle which are not well ventilated topermit quick drying.

This information illustrates the necessity ofkeeping your vehicle (particularly the under-body) as clean and dry as possible. It isequally important to repair any damage tothe paint or protective coatings as soon aspossible.

How to Help Prevent CorrosionWash your vehicle frequentlyThe best way to preserve the finish on yourvehicle and to help avoid corrosion is to keepit clean with frequent washing.

Wash your vehicle at least once during thewinter and once immediately after the win-ter. Keep your vehicle, particularly the un-derside, as clean and dry as possible.

If you frequently drive on salted roads, yourvehicle should be washed at least once amonth during the winter. If you live near theocean, your vehicle should be washed atleast once a month throughout the year.

Wash your vehicle immediately after using

it off-road. For washing instructions, refer tothe “VEHICLE CLEANING” section.

WARNING

Remove foreign material depositsForeign material such as salts, chemicals, road oil or tar, tree sap, bird droppingsand industrial fall-out may damage thefinish of your vehicle if it is left on paintedsurfaces. Remove these types of depos-its as quickly as possible. If these depositsare difficult to wash off, an additionalcleaner may be required. Be sure that anycleaner you use is not harmful to paintedsurfaces and is specifically intended foryour purposes. Follow the manufacturer’sdirections when using these special clean-ers.

Foreign material can lodge betweenthe fuel tank of your vehicle and theskid plate which covers it. Youshould periodically clean out anyforeign material which hasacculumated in this area, since itcould create a fire hazard.

Repair finish damageCarefully examine your vehicle for dam-age to the painted surfaces. especially ifit is used off-road. Should you find anychips or scratches in the paint, touch themup immediately to prevent corrosion fromstarting. If the chips or scratches havegone through to the bare metal, have aqualified body shop make the repair.

Keep Passenger and cargo compart-ments cleanMoisture, dirt or mud can accumulateunder the floor mats and may causecorrosion. Occasionally, check under thesemats to ensure that this area is clean anddry. More frequent checks are necessaryif the vehicle is used off road or in wetweather.

Certain cargo such as chemicals, fertiliz-ers, cleaners, salts, etc., are extremelycorrosive by nature. These products shouldbe transported in sealed containers. If aspill or leak does occur, clean and dry thearea immediately.

Store your vehicle in a dry, well-venti-lated area.Do not park your vehicle in a damp, poorlyventilated area. If you often wash yourvehicle in the garage or if you frequentlydrive it in when wet, your garage may bedamp. The high humidity in the garage maycause or accelerate corrosion. A wet ve-hicle may corrode even in a heated garageif the ventilation is poor.

VEHICLE CLEANING

Do not apply additional undercoatingor rust preventive coating on oraround exhaust system componentssuch as the exhaust pipes, etc. A firecould be started if the undercoatingsubstance becomes overheated.
