The mark of any successful program isthe ability to attain, and more importantlysusta in, excellence. That being said, expectations for the Creighton Universitymen’s basketball team remain high for ateam that returns all five starters from lastyear’s 23-9 squad.

The Bluejays have earned four con-secutive NCAA Tournament bids while alsochurning out 20 or more wins in each ofthose campaigns under coach D a n aAltman.

The 2002-03 team looks to continuethat streak with 10 returning lettermen, paced by reigning Missouri Va l l e yConference Player of the Year K y l eK o r v e r. An A P All-American honorable-mention choice last year, Korver ranks asone of the most versatile players in the col-lege game. Last season he led CU in scor-ing (15.1), rebounding (5.5), assists (3.3)and steals (1.6) while ranking among theleague leaders in all but one statistical cat-egory.

Expected to join Korver in the front-court will be Brody Deren and MichaelLindeman.

Deren earned second-team all-MVClaurels in his debut season in Omaha whileaveraging 9.9 points and 5.1 rebounds. Healso led the Bluejays with 50 blocked shots.Deren has spent the off-season working onhis inside strength and improving the rangeon his outside jumper.

Lindeman scored 6.7 points per gameand was the only Bluejay to start all 32 con-tests last season. Though not flashy,Lindeman proved to be a reliable scorerand passer and held his own defensivelydespite often guarding taller opponents.

C r e i g h t o n ’s return ing backcourtincludes guards Larry House and TylerMcKinney.

House, who started all but one contest, scored 6.8 points per game, mostly on anarray of slashes and cuts to the basket.

McKinney worked his way into thestarting line-up midway through his fresh-man season and promptly led the Bluejaysto a season-best seven-game winningstreak. In the process, McKinney provedhimself as a capable distributor and outsideshooter.

Creighton will rely on senior guardDeAnthony Bowden to provide a spark offthe bench. Bowden started a dozen gamesat the point last season and brings tremen-dous tenacity to the defensive end of thefloor. Bowden is expected to split timebetween the point and shooting guard.

Leading the Creighton bench up frontwill be forward Mike Grimes. Grimes, amember of the MVC’s all-Bench team aseason ago, should see increased time ashe continues to improve. Grimes finishedwith a flourish down the stretch and will becounted on when Deren and Lindemanhead to the bench.

Reserve center Joe Dabbert will alsolog double-digit minutes on a nightly basis.Dabbert started CU’s first six games lastyear during an injury-plagued season. However, Dabbert gives the Jays anothershot-blocking presence in the paint and hassurprising range for a big man.

Jimmy Motz was inconsistent with hisshot a year ago but has the ability to fill it upfrom the outside. However, Motz underwentankle surgery late in August and wasexpected to miss 4-6 months as this publi-cation went to press.

Sophomore forward Dan Bresnahanappeared in nine games last season for CUand will see action in a reserve role as well.

Creighton added four newcomers tothe mix on the recruiting trail that will be inthe hunt for playing time.

Junior col lege transfers B r a n d o nSims and Kellen Miliner arrive at CU withthree years of eligibility remaining.

Sims earned MVP honors at thenational tournament while leading JohnsonCounty Community College to the title in2000-01. He missed the 2001-02 campaignwith an injury but is healthy and expected tocontribute immediately a t the shootingguard or small forward positions.

Miliner earned all-Region honors in afirst-year program at Northern OklahomaCollege-Enid last season. He boasts strongoutside shooting ability and is a good ath-lete who once high jumped 6-10 in highschool.

CU’s high school recruits are NateFunk and Quincy Henderson. Funk, a 6-3guard from Sioux City, Iowa, will see time atboth the point and shooting guard slots.Henderson, a 6-5 forward from Madison,Wis., will contend for time on the wing.Senior forward Kyle Korver ranks third in career

free-throw percentage and seventh in careerthree-pointers made among the nation’s returningplayers.

DeAnthony Bowden will play both backcourtpositions after being named by Basketball Timesas one of the nation’s top transfers last year.

White and Blue!We will fight till the fight is won.”

Hall of FameThe Creighton Athletic Hall of Fame has induct-

ed 26 former Bluejay basketball players and coach-es since it was initiated in 1968. Major LeagueBaseball great and former CU basketball star, BobGibson, was the first inductee and Bob Harstad(1987-91) (pictured below) was inducted last year.

High ScoresCU’s highest-scoring game was a 124-94 win at

Miami (Fla.) on February 10, 1964, while the toppoint total in a home contest came during a 120-76victory over Nevada on December 21, 1963, at theOmaha Civic Auditorium. The Jays have reachedtriple digits 32 times, most recently in a 102-64 winover Grambling on Nov. 29, 2001.

Kearney, CharlesCharles Kearney is believed to be the only play-

er/coach in Creighton history and owns the bestwinning percentage among Creighton’s 14 headcoaches. A two-time All-American and Creighton’stop scorer on the team, Kearney coached theBluejays to a 49-13 (.790) record in three seasons, including 15-2 and 13-6 marks while pulling dou-ble-duty from 1919-21.

According to Bluejay lore, Eddie Mulholland wasto be the coach that 1919-20 season. However, they had a dance the night before one of the earlygames, and the next night the floor was very slickfor the game. There was an argument aboutwhether there would be dances before games, andMulholland quit as coach. Kearney was playing andtook over coaching too.

Longest SeriesCreighton will continue its most-played series

when the Bluejays meet Drake for a pair of leaguegames during the 2002-03 season. With theBluejays winning 10 of the last 13 games againstthe Bulldogs, Creighton owns a 77-51 advantage inthe all-time series.

Although Creighton did not rejoin the MVC untilthe 1977-78 season, the Bulldogs and Bluejayshave played at least once every year dating back tothe 1972-73 season. The Creighton-Drake series isnow the most-played series between current MVCschools.

Low ScoresThe lowest-scoring game in school history was a

7-6 loss at Marquette during the 1922-23 season. The six points scored by the Bluejays is also thelowest point total ever recorded by a Creightonteam.

Since the introduction of the shot clock in 1986-87, the Bluejays have been held to fewer than 50points 10 times. The last time CU was limited tofewer than 50 points was during a 56-46 loss atIndiana State on January 6, 2000. Over that sameperiod of time, the Jays have held their opponentsto less than 50 points on 24 occasions, mostrecently in the 57-41 win over Evansville on Jan.26, 2002.

Major LeaguersBob Gibson and Dennis Rasmussen went on to

enjoy stellar Major League Baseball careers follow-ing their Creighton basketball days. Gibson was anAll-American on the court for the Jays and playedfor the Harlem Globetrotters in 1957-58 before opt-ing instead for baseball full-time. Among Gibson’scareer achievements on the diamond were 251career wins, nine straight Gold Gloves, two CyYoung Awards, two World Series championships, a1971 no-hitter against Pittsburgh, a first ballot Hallof Famer in 1981 and a spot on Major LeagueBaseball’s All-Century Team.

Rasmussen was a solid cont ributor for theBluejay basketball team during 1977-80, but likeGibson, decided to make baseball his professionalsport. Rasmussen won 91 games as a majorleague starting pitcher.

MascotBilly Bluejay is the official mascot

of the Creighton University AthleticsDepartment. Originally, the Bluejayswere depicted as a “birdwatcher’sb l u e j a y,” but that was changed in1941 when Creighton alumnusJoseph P. Murphy designed the cur-rent version of Billy, one with a morehuman stance and expression.

Prior to 1924, the Creighton teamswere referred to as the Hilltoppers, but that name lost favor because atleast six other teams in the countryalso used the same nickname. TheOmaha Bee assisted the University’sAthletic Board and Alumni Association

in finding a new nickname by asking its readers tosubmit possibilities. After considering 200 entries, the Athletic Board decided upon Bluejays becauseof the school’s colors, blue and white.

To d a y, Creighton remains the only NCAADivision I athletics program known officially as theBluejays.
