HPOGC Whipstock

Whipstock is an effective, cost-efficient tool for sidetracking from an existing wellbore. Sidetracking can be accomplished in open hole or throughout a single or more casing layer. In a cased hole, the whipstock deflects the mill to create an opening for the drill string in the desired direction. In an open hole, the whipstock deflects the mill into the formation wall to redirect the wellbore.

The HPOGC Whipstock available types are:

Single Trip Hydraulic Set (Permanent or Retrievable).

Single Trip Mechanical Set (Permanent or Retrievable).

Single Trip Openhole (Expandable Anchor).

Cement Type Openhole.

Whip and Window (Permanent Hydraulic Set)

This system works as a workover system for drilling a directional hole to bypass an obstruction in the well that cannot be removed or damage to the well, such as collapsed casing that cannot be repaired. This job is also done to deepen a well or to relocate the bottom of the well in a more productive zone, which is horizontally removed from the original well.

To sidetrack, a hole (called a window) is made in the casing above the obstruction. The well can optionally be plugged with cement below the window.

Special drill tools, such as bent housing, or bent sub are used to drill off at an angle from the main well. This new hole is completed in the same manner as any well after a liner is set.

Hydraulic Set Anchor Packer

The Hydraulic Set Anchor Packer is available from 5” to 8/3-13” sizes.

Design Advantages & Benefits:

Available in Permanent and Retrievable type options.

The Hydraulic packer features tetra-directional slips that resist both upward and downward movement of the whipstock. Also it resists in right and left directions and prevents rotation of packer after it is set.

Low setting pressure required.

Designed to maximize the amount of hydraulic force generated directly into the seal and retaining slips.

Ratchet system locks slips and seal in position.

Copper cup seals provide an interference seal, preventing rubber element from creeping.

SPEEDY® whipstock

SPEEDY® whipstock is the new type of non-vibrational sidetracking

equipment, utilizing specific and exclusive design of HPOGC’s local

engineering expertise and knowledge, which is capable of setting in high

mud weights due to not infiltration of drilling mud into the internal

mechanism and maneuverable running through doglegs and seats, due

to its low-length packer.

Benefits:

No rotation or vibration at high-torque milling operations, having five slips compared to other four-slip packers.

No need for Equalizing Port, because of specific design of HPOGC which prevents infiltration of drilling mud into the internal mechanism and thus disabling. (If the packer floats in high weight mud at any arbitrary depth of the hole, mud and its solid particles never breach the tool.)

Low length of packer ease running through meandrous trajectory of hole and reduce the sticking risks of whipstock assembly tools.

Ensure setting and thru-engagement of slips during installation due to having bi-directional movement of setting cones.

In addition, incorporation of this tool with SPEEDY® Tri-Mill

creates an efficient assembly for operating whipstock jobs at any

tough conditions of drilling mud and casing, in a short period of

operational time.

Mechanical Set Anchor

Single Grip Model: The single grip mechanical anchor is designed to firmly anchor the whipstock within the cased wellbore to enable sidetrack operations. The anchor is run in place using drill string along with the whipstock and the mill, and is set by tagging the bottom of the hole, cement plug or liner top. The anchor can then be properly positioned by pulling it up in the hole to the desired setting depth. Compression is then applied to the drill string to set the anchor and shear the mill’s shear screw. The anchor can easily be retrieved by latching on the whipstock and applying tension to the drill string.

Double Grip Model: The double grip mechanical anchor features bi-directional slips that resist both upward and downward movements of the whipstock. Similar to the single grip tool, the double grip anchor also give positive centering of the whipstock within the casing when in the set position. This mechanical anchor allows the mill’s shear bolt to be sheared in tension or compression without movement of the anchor. The anchor can easily be converted from a permanent to a retrievable version in the field.

Openhole Whipstock

Expandable Anchor Openhole Whipstock

The Expandable Anchor Openhole Whipstock is designed to be set in open hole, expanded the Anchor and set into position and drill out the window and rat hole in single trip. This type can be also cemented in place.

This Type of Whipstock is generally used to sidetrack in open hole when a hard formation will not allow the sidetracking. The Openhole Whipstock can be oriented with the use of orientation sub and survey equipment.

Advantages:

Can be used with or without Cement.

Positive kick-off point in hard formations.

Ramp to build and maintain deviation in unconsolidated formations.

Eliminates total reliance on cement integrity in areas where cement plugs are difficult to achieve.

Benefits:

Single Trip System when not using cement.

Potential savings in cement costing.

Reliable in wide range of formations.

Easy to set and side track.

Cost savings in time waiting on cement and in time spent “time-drilling”.

Reduces the need for multiple cement jobs.

Expandable Anchor, Openhole Whipstock

9

Cement Type Whipstock

Cement is pumped from the surface through the drill string, setting tool and whipstock to the bottom of the whipstock. Once the cement reaches below the whipstock, the whipstock is then lowered, set inside the cement and then allowed to harden in place. After the cement is hard, a drill bit is used to continue drilling down the concave face of the whipstock.

Benefits:

Positive kick-off point in hard formations.

Ramp to build and maintain deviation in unconsolidated formations.

Cement Type Whipstock

10

Inflatable Openhole Whipstock

The Inflatable Open Hole Whipstock Packer is used below a Whipstock Assembly to provide solid anchoring and support. In addition, the tool also provides zonal isolation in Openhole or in casing. Inflatable packer elements for these tools are 66 inches in length with 4 foot seal lengths. High strength aircraft cable is used to provide expansion characteristics in washed out or irregular well bores. Cable reinforcement allows these elements to return very close to the original run-in diameter.

Benefits:

Heavy duty 3-1/2" & 4-1/2" IF connections.

Constructed with high alloy steels for unsurpassed strength.

Inflatable Packer Elements provide greater clearance through restrictions in a well.

Tool requires no rotation for setting the packer (or releasing for shear style tool).

The system does not depend on a poppet valve to maintain pressure in the packer element.

A sliding sleeve is mechanically shifted to maintain inflation pressure in the packer.

A cable-reinforced packer element provides superior bonding of rubber to cable, and therefore less rubber is likely to be lost downhole.

The system allows pressure to be fully equalized across the packer element prior to unsetting the packer.

Inflatable Openhole Whipstock

11

Inflatable Openhole Whipstock Operation Sequences

Prior to run the Inflatable Openhole Whipstock Packer into the well, a bull plug is installed at the bottom of the tool.

The bull plug will not allow string to fill as the tool is run into the well, and therefore the tubing must be filled while running into the well. The Inflatable Openhole Whipstock Packers is set by applying pressure inside the string.

The packer is set using hydraulic pressure so no string movement is required for setting. Pressure is applied in stages, and normally packer inflation pressure is set at about 14 MPa (2000 PSI).

Whip and window (Retrieval mechanism)

This system works as a workover system for drilling a directional hole where you need to maintain the previous hole simultaneously. This job is for drilling multi-lateral wells in which you want to deepen a well or to relocate the bottom of the well in more than one direction.

To sidetrack, a hole (called a window) is made in the casing or in an open hole.

Special drill tools, such as bent housing, or bent sub are used to drill off at an angle from the main well. This new hole can be completed in the same manner as any well after a liner is set.

14

Whipface

The whipface section is the part of the whipstock that actually directs the mills through the casing wall. HPOGC Whipstock’s Whipfaces have numbers of features, each of them having a specific function that contributes to the success of the whipstock operations.

HPOGC Whipface Features:

HPOGC whipstock offers different Whipfaces with angles from °2 to °3.

The HPOGC whipface has a special design to assist the mill to cut casing uniformly and rapidly without “coring” problems.

A unique robust “hook-up” system protects the shear bolt from torsional and tensional forces during running allowing the whipstock / BHA to pivot relative from each other for maximum ease when installing in wells with restrictions or high dog leg sections.

Design of the profile ensures deflection of the mills laterally towards casing wall for a rapid cut out of the window achieving maximum length and gauge of the window.

A retrieval slot is machined and located in whipface for retrieval by hook.

Top section of whip body is machined to allow clearance and engagement with die collars and overshots.

Milled slot in the back to house hydraulic system and protect while running. Manufactured to API / ASME standards and specifications.

Ditch Magnet

The Ditch Magnet is a junk retrieval tool designed to remove metal particles from drilling mud.

High quality stainless steel is used to encapsulate a series of extra strength magnets assuring maximum pick-up capacity.

Operation:

The magnet should be used whenever metal particles are accumulated in the mud. This is a required tool during milling and Washover operations. Position the magnet in the mud return line before the shale shaker. Metal particles passing by the magnet will then be caught and retained, protecting the shale shaker, mud pumps and other expensive components of the mud system.
