Flower PowerThey say that April showers bring May flowers, and such is
the case for craft beer too. The most predominant flower in beer could be any one of a variety of hops, which act as a pre-servative and give beer its bitter taste. However, craft brewers have been infusing other flowers as well, and the results are refreshingly tasty. While we may associate flowers with table decorations, funeral wreaths and gardening, edible flowers are a great addition to a summer salad, and flower essences provide the forefront for perfumes and colognes. For centuries to present time, certain flowers have also been used for their natural healing properties (e.g. chamomile, calendula, arnica, etc.).
In brewing, flowers provide beer with a unique dimension that only a flower can. Some flower beers are subtle and others are not – but either way they’re worth examining and sampling. Here are just a few of my favorite flower beers:
Elysian Avatar IPA (WA): my very favorite flower beer, Avatar uses dried jasmine flowers into the boil and hopback. Make
no mistake; this is an IPA with a twist. The lovely jasmine flavor is apparent right away, and for this reason I truly enjoy this flower beer.
Fraoch Heather Ale, Williams Broth-ers Brewing Co. (Scotland): Made from a Gaelic recipe that’s been around since 2000 B.C., this style of ale is only made by Williams Brothers and was my favorite be-fore I discovered Avatar. I still love it today and it’s widely available, you just have to look for it. Besides heather flowers, it’s also made with ginger to give a hint of spice and bogmyrtle, a flowering plant na-tive to Scotland and other countries.
MoM Hefeweizen, Rogue (OR): MoM Hefeweizen is a wheat beer infused with Oregon roses. I love roses and rose water, so I was curious about this one and bought it. The
rose flavor is extremely light to almost non-existent if your taste buds aren’t paying attention. It’s definitely worth another try!
Orange Blossom Cream Ale, Buffalo Bill’s Brewery (CA): I first tried this several years ago at the Empire Brewfest when it was in Clinton Square in the summer time. It was my first sampling on a hot July day, and I thoroughly en-joyed it. Made with orange flower, orange peel and honey, this beer

was not too sweet and very refreshing for the summer-time.
Rosée D’Hibiscus, Dieu Du Ciel (QC, Canada): A bright pink wheat beer naturally tinted from hibiscus flowers added during brew-ing, this beer from Montreal is a delight. The hibiscus flower is apparent not only in color but also in flavor. Not sweet, this wheat beer is perfect for a hot day. If you have to cross the border to try it, I highly suggest you do so!

have it, my top five flower beers – I know there are so many more to explore and now is a good time as any. Instead of dunking a lime in your beer this spring and summer, why not pick some flowers in a different way? Experience the world of flower beers and you just might be surprised. Maybe you’ll like some, maybe you’ll love some or hate some, but you can’t say you didn’t try! Experiment, explore, and enjoy these beers during this time – everything’s coming up roses! Cheers! []

Tales from the Vineby CASSANDRA HARRINGTON
The Evolution of America’s Most Vintage Wine Trail
It’s hard to believe a time when the shores of the Cayuga Lake were not occupied by the picturesque rows of vineyard that provide the area with the fruit that drives our local economy. Not more than 35 years ago, winemaking was nearly experimen-tal practice for some in the Finger Lakes region.
In 1981, the owner of Plane’s Cayuga Vineyards (now called Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery), Mary Plane, envi-sioned a multi-faceted tourist destination along the shores of Cayuga Lake. She recognized the challenge of getting visitors to a rural business surrounded mostly by farmland and located 30 minutes away from the interstate highway. Plane teamed up with neighboring Lucas, Americana, and Fronte-nac Point Vineyards to discuss common goals and to facilitate creative tactics to attract new customers. Not long after, in
1983, Lakeshore Winery joined the group, which was then established as the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail – becoming America’s first organized wine trail.
In that same year, the first brochure was produced, proclaiming “The CLWT offers a
variety that is unmatched in wine touring and tasting… No-where else will travelers experience such a multi-tude of pre-mium wines, attractions, comfortable lodging, fine restaurants, friendly people, and a splendid scenery.” Perhaps a bit overstated in 1983, it’s certainly true now.
Shortly after, Knapp joined the trail in 1984, Hosmer and Swedish Hill in 1986, Six Mile Creek in 1987; and King Ferry, Goose Watch, Sheldrake Point, and Long Point in the 90s. Bellwether joined in 2000, Montezuma and Thirsty Owl joined in 2003, Buttonwood and Cobblestone (now Varick) in 2005 and the newest members, Toro Run, in 2014. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail currently has seventeen member wineries, featuring a cidery, a meadery and 4 distilleries within the wineries themselves.
Then in 1987, Cayuga Lake became the first American Viticulture Area (AVA) in all of the Finger Lakes. An AVA is a delimited grape-growing region having distinguish-ing features that allow vintners and consumers to attribute a given quality, repu-tation, or other characteristic of a wine made from grapes grown in an area to its geographic origin, as defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
Within the Cayuga Lake AVA, eastern exposures help ripen grapes hit by the sunrise and vineyard elevations never exceed 800 feet above the lake’s surface with steep slopes leading to the shorelines, creating air patterns that generate a unique microclimate in autumn facilitating the perfect harvest season. In the fall, cold air drains off the vineyards onto the lake, mimicking a vacuum-like effect that draws more cold air from the land. The continuous air flow is helpful in preventing cold pockets from settling and forming frost on the vines, extending the growing season

to 165-170 days on average, which is three weeks longer than many other areas in the Finger Lakes region, making Cayuga Lake truly unique.
According to the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, just this month, New York has reached 400 wineries in 59 of the state’s 62 counties with more licenses pending
at the NYS Liquor Authority, claiming the fourth most wineries in the country behind California, Washington and Oregon.
The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail has served as a model for most of New York’s current nineteen wine trails and for other wine trails across the nation. It is a benchmark for results attained by working together for a common goal. Thus, Cayuga Lake is home to America’s most vintage wine trail.

It seems bizarre to think about it now, but I remember sitting in a theater 9 years ago and watching THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT. Despite the vast number of films I have reviewed over the past 13 years, I still recall the experience vividly. Throughout the entire duration of the movie, I was convinced that I was watching the death of a franchise. In fact, it wasn’t until the last scene in the entire movie that I smiled for the first time. This, of course, was when the noticeably absent Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) made his brief cameo. It was a clever addition that provided some (much needed) entertainment. In the back of my mind, however, I couldn’t help but think, “Ug-ghh, I guess this means there is going to be another one!?”
It took a few years, but as predicted, FAST & FURIOUS (the fourth installment of the series) was released in 2009. What was a little less predictable, was the fact that the movie was actually pretty good! It was a definitive step up from the TOKYO DRIFT disaster, and proved to be a huge box

Experience...office hit. Two more sequels followed (FAST FIVE, FAST & FURIOUS 6), which largely reunited the original cast, and chucked Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in for good measure. These were also entertaining flicks, filled with clever action and some humor along the way.
During production of FURIOUS SEVEN, tragedy struck. One of the mainstays of the FAST franchise, Paul Walker, was killed in an (unrelated) automobile accident. Due to the unexpected tragedy, the fate of the film (and the entire franchise) was largely unknown. In the end, the cast and crew decided that Walker would have wanted them to continue, and, with the help of Walker’s real-life brothers, production was completed.
As is the case every time you sit down to watch a movie that has been released af-ter the death of a performer, there is a level of sentimentality and sadness that can’t be shaken. This is certainly the case with FURIOUS SEVEN. Having said that, you also need to enjoy the film for what it is. This aspect proves to be adequately attainable in this action blockbuster.
FURIOUS SEVEN picks up after the events of FAST& FURIOUS 6. Ruthless criminal Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) vows to destroy those who injured his brother Owen (Luke Evans) and quickly sets out to do so. After he breaks into the DDS office of Hobbs (Johnson), he discovers the identities of all of those who were responsible for Owen’s demise, and he and the agent have a solid rumble. After severely injuring the agent, Shaw escapes and then heads to Tokyo where he kills Han (Sung Kang), and sets his sights on the rest of the crew.
Shaw attempts to blow-up Toretto’s home and everyone in it, which includes Brian (Walker), Mia (Jordana Brewster) and their young son. Dom and Brian realize that this attack is a declaration of war, and the onslaught of violence will never cease so long as Deckard is alive. Along with Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), they decide to do everything in their power to bring the baddie down.
There are actually still a few more subplots that I haven’t even gotten to yet (an international terrorist trying to steal a computer hacker’s device that would allow him to rule the world, plus the secretive government agency who is looking to bring him down) but the real matter at hand, is whether or not the movie is any good. This, I think, will largely depend on whether or not you liked the past few installments of the franchise. If you did, you are in for a treat, and if you didn’t, well, should you really be seeing part 7 to begin anyway?
The action sequences in FURIOUS SEV-EN are long, elaborate, and for the most part, pretty darn fun. Stuff explodes, everyone fights, and cars are destroyed with a reckless abandon. It would be

fair to believe that the automobile sequences would feel repetitive and unoriginal, but when you are watching the may-hem unfold, that feeling is completely absent. Sure, witnessing the ab-surdity of a mountainous chase/heist sequence, and the ridiculousness of seeing jumping-a-car-through-three-buildings is somewhat silly, it remains the standard on which this entire series has been based. For those who paid admission to see exactly that, there is no way to be disappointed. Statham proves to be an excellent addition to the series, standing as a menacing and believably ruthless villain. He doesn’t deliver many lines of dialogue, but his character is supposed to be short on words, and brash in actions.
As for Walker and the tragedy that surrounded him, FURIOUS SEVEN delivers a effectively sentimental good-bye. With the touching song “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa (co-written by Charlie Puth) and a stirring voice-over by Dom (which in actuality is a tribute from Diesel

to his fallen friend) the screen fades to white, with the words “For Paul” emblazoned across the screen. Whether you are a fan of the franchise or not, it is a fitting and emotional farewell.

Woof. Drinkin’ with the Barndogs.
Sounds Of Syracuse by CHUCK SCHIELE
This story begins as per my loitering-out-the-back-door-of-the-club chats, in between sets with my pal, Pete Szymanski—drummer for Syracuse’s very own Barn-dogs. Everybody knows that the Barndogs are a great roll, these days. Household name by now. Playing top gigs such as Taste of Syracuse and the Vinyl Albums series. With a collection of like feathers in their Barndog hat, these clas-sic rockers remain one of the busier groups in Central New York. They’ve been together a long time. A rock and roll band that stays together a long time is a rare thing. And that’s fascinating to me.
So, while loi-tering, I told Pete it’s time to do a story. He sug-gested Clark’s Ale House, downtown, and it was on.
There we were with our robust ales, on a sunny Sunday afternoon. An inconspicuous little table with some elbow room. Five rock-ers talking about rock and roll.
The Barndogs consist of Andy Comstock: bass and lead vocals; Mark Westers: guitfiddle and backing vocals; John Kapusniak (aka John Kapp): keys; Pete Szy-manski: drums and vocals.

PreventiveMedicineby DR. BARRY
BITCH BITCH BITCHCan I bitch and whine for a column? Join me in my world this month and
you might have some insight into why there are fewer and fewer doctors going into primary care. I’m not talking about the vast difference in reim-bursement between primary care and specialists. I’m talking about the hassle factors and frustrations of being a primary caregiver.
Forget about the fact that the insurance companies are charging 10-15 % more each year but I haven’t had a single raise in years and have absolutely no negotiating power. I am board certified in two specialties with over two decades of experience but that’s not worth a penny extra to the insurance company. Recently one major insurance company in the area came to the
office to review our mammography screening rates. Our results were at the top of the scale, well above the average and far above the worse performing physicians. What do we get for our superior care.? Nada...Zip...Zero. Why not at least publish this to the paper or to the patients with your insurance so they can see the individual doctors performance and judge for themselves who they want to see? What a shocking con-cept...giving patients real informed choices. In-stead the high quality and low quality is all mixed together and patients really have no idea about quality measures.
First it’s the insurance hassles. There are many different health plans and I have to hire a whole billing dept. to sort through the different plans and deal with their individual convoluted coverage. These plans will cover shingles shots...these plans won’t . These plans cover this test...those plans don’t. Impossible to keep straight in your head. I have to hire another staffer to fight with the insurance companies to get authoriza-tions for MRI’s, stress tests, etc. Now some high school graduate with a checklist is saying the stress test is not covered because we used the term “chest pressure” not “chest pain”. So now I have to get on the phone personally to speak doctor to doctor to get this straightened out. Imagine doing this multiple times every day of the workweek.
Likewise the insurance companies have their

own strange and arcane rules regarding drug coverage...This compa-ny will cover these meds...that company will cover completely differ-ent meds for the same medical problem. They send us multiple faxes daily alerting us to possible drug interactions with our patients even if the possible reactions are rare or trivial . We have our own computer system that warns us of serious interactions. They send us notices when our patients don’t fill their refills as if I have any real control over that. Each year the plans can change what drugs they cover so the same patient with the same medicines may have the insurance com-pany change their coverage yearly. I can assure you this is not based on the quality of the meds or the benefits of the meds...it’s made on a $$$$ basis only.
Test results are another area of tremendous stress for the primary care doctor. Forget about the patient that gets sent for a test but doesn’t show up. You decide to skip a mammogram this year and if you get a breast cancer somehow it’s my fault . I can send you reminder after reminder to get your colonoscopy or mammogram, but if you still don’t get the test it’s still my fault. Trust me that’s how the courts look at it. Telling you to get a mammogram is not enough. Scheduling the mammogram for you is not enough. I have to stay on your case until it gets done or I am liable . At some point the patient has to take some responsibility but that’s not how the courts see it. But the real hassle with test results is that the radiologists refuse to read any test as yes or no anymore. When I started in medicine...the radiologists would issue a simple report..”Chest X Ray showed pneumonia”. “Chest X Ray normal” Now almost universally the reports hedge their bets …”Could be pneumonia...could be cancer...could be a variant of normal” Almost all reports we get now suggest further more expensive testing which may or may not require further testing or more testing down the road. This is very frustrating for the doc-tor and even more frustrating for the patients. “How many tests am I going to have to do to get an answer?!” The test report may give me an answer about a specific issue but raise another one. “The spot seen
on the x ray is shown to be nothing serious but on this scan I see a possible cyst on the liver”. The radiologist will suggest more expensive testing now and or in 3-6 months which may or may not give a real answer and further testing could reveal new incidentalomas that have to be addressed. Patients get mad at me for all this testing but if we don’t check every possible problem out it could be you that suffers and me that gets sued. Not good for either one of us.
Noncompliant patients are another source of frustra-tion to the doctor. Patients just don’t understand how seriously we take the doctor patient relationship. If we see patients regularly ..if we are in regular contact , then any potential problems can be followed and there are less complications down the road. When you let pa-tients go for years without being seen any little problem from the last visit could grow into something serious or catastrophic. So when we send you three separate writ-ten requests to schedule an office call and also call you at least twice and get absolutely no response we have to discharge you from the practice. One of the nega-tive reviews we have on the internet addresses this. The patient complained that she was fired just because she never responded to our calls and letters. I’m not the publishers clearinghouse...I am contacting you for a reason and all you have to do is call us to stay in com-munication. Yes, it’s my business and I do think I know what’s right for you healthwise including how often you should be seen. We can discuss this and work out a mu-tually agreeable program but not if you never respond. No response = discharge letter. Another complaint about our office on the internet involves the no show

are consequences. Lawyers charge by the minute when you call them. I just want you to keep your appointment and if you don’t you have to pay a no show fee. If I miss an appointment with my massage thera-pist or my Saxophone instructor I pay the full price for their time. That’s the right thing to do but not according to the guy who bitched about our no show policy on the internet.
I just took my an-nual recertification for malpractice. It’s always a depressing experience. Basically they remind you that each and every office call could lead to a major lawsuit. It’s also not the obvious problems like chest pain that the doctor is sued over...What you and the patient think is just a sore throat or arthritis of the back could turn into something potentially life threatening so there is no real “easy “ office call. Patients bitch if they think you are not taking their complaint seriously. Patients also bitch if you take their complaint seriously and suggest referrals to specialist. Look what position that puts me in...It’s crystal clear that the main reason doctors get sued is “failure to diagnose”. The main defense against failure to diagnose is referral of the patient to a second opinion. I would think patients would be appreciative of a medical office that was willing to be thorough and get a second opinion but judging by the mostly anony-mous complaints I get they really don’t appreciate it. I tell my Nurse Practitioners to not hesitate to get a second opinion or do a referral if they feel it’s necessary. I would rather have a patient bitch about too many referrals than a widow complaining that
we were not thorough enough! Thanks for letting me give you a little
glimpse of what the modern doctor has to deal with. Is it any wonder that more and more doctors just want to be hospital employees or work in a large group setting where they might be insulated from some of the hassles? Of course I’m sure they have their own unique hassles as well.
So, these are all the reasons pri-mary care medicine is not the same anymore. The hassle factor is driving more and more doctors to chose other specialties and to retire early. Yes, even with all the hassles and decreased reimbursement and rising expenses doctors still make a good living but that’s not a primary reason why I went into medicine. My interest in people and their medical problems hasn’t diminished. I still think I can make a dif-ference. Of course, changing part of my practice to a personalized care service certainly has helped to ward off any doldrums. Despite all the hassles I still love going to work everyday. I hope you do as well! Until next month, get well….stay well.

The New Class Conflict By: Joel Kotkin
I don’t know if you, like me, have noticed an increasingly embattled exchange in our public arena.
Some of this, I know, is due to social media. At first it was Twitter’s tendency to slide into what more resembled the old Flamewars of BBS days, a series of increas-ingly angry if terse and occasionally clever barbs aimed at “the other side.” So I quit it.
Then I began to notice that good ol’ Facebook, that happy place of kitties, puppies, children’s photos and funny platitudes had become more and more political; more and more nasty; less and less interesting. I find myself spending less and less time with it, if for no other reason that to get to the end of the day without feeling oddly angry.
Still, when a book like this one comes along, I can’t help myself, and I want to dive in.
The story is simple: class warfare will always be with us, it just morphs. What was good was bad, what was “done” simply isn’t any more; what was proper and decent is laughable and dated. The foreword sets the tone by reminding us of that great snark, H.L. Mencken, who sat and “observed the scene,” usually with a decent amount of hauteur and humor.
Now Kotkin, explains foreword writer Fred Siegel, perhaps more earnest and schol-arly, is stepping into similar shoes in this book, pointing out that, having hovered somewhere near “true north” for a while, our “contemporary political compass is bro-ken. The standard assumptions that fill our ‘quality dailies’ and their aural offshoots are guided by presuppositions about what constitutes right and left that have been eclipsed by the changes of the past quarter century.”
I recall reading about “pole shift” some years ago - the idea that once every so many eons the poles, north and south, shifted polarity, causing enormous dis-ruption. Or supposedly this happens. No one, certainly, has lived to tell the tale, though there are indicators that it has happened. Certainly, however, we only have to look back as far as the Civil War to know that it was the Republican Party that sponsored the Abolitionist move-ment, and the Progressives who some years later sponsored Prohibition. Things do flip flop, Kerry and several other poli-ticians or no.
Kotkin’s primary thesis is that all the labels we have assigned to various roles in society, and the influence they exert, have lost meaning, should be trashed, and he has come up with a new, possibly more accurate way of organizing our American brand of “castes.”
He is hardly the first to point out that the Robber Barons of the early industrial age had nothin’ on the very wealthy of our age. “In 2013 alone,” he writes, “nine private equity investors took home over $2.6 billion in compensation just by themselves, an amount unprecedented for such a small group. In addition, there

has been a rapid increase in compensation to corporate management; since 1978, pay for CEOs rose a remarkable 725%, more than one hundred times the increase in worker compensation.”
See, I told ya! I can hear that now. What might be different, however, is the degree to which the “growing alliance between the ultra-wealthy and the instruments of state power” has cozied up. “Too big to fail,” while not utterly new as an idea, was once the bete-noir of government trust-busters, even at the risk of putting the low-est paid workers out of a job.
Moreover, Kotkin points out, contrary to what might be expected, it’s not just the
Republicans “with their long, historic ties to Wall Street and laissez-faire ideology” who are accepting of such inequity. Much as the recent administration and its populist voice has expressed disgust at the “one percent,” it is perhaps the makeup of that one percent that is surprising, as well as the fact that “95 percent of the income gains during President Obama’s first term have gone to barely one percent of the population, while incomes have declined for the lower 93 percent. As one writer from the left-leaning Huffing-ton Post put it, ‘the rising tide has lifted fewer boats during the Obama years - the ones it’s lifted have been mostly yachts.’”
It is the “discrep-ancy between rhetoric and reality” that interests Kotkin, and that motivate much of his vision of the new class structure.
At the topmost rung he places “The New Oligarchs.” The digital economy, “mani-fested in the shift of physical products and services into cyberspace, has engendered the emergence of what I will describe as a new, and potentially potent, Oligarchy, with influence that extends into the media and political world.”
This post-industrial economy has given pride of place to the professional and technical class, decreasing reliance on labor, both skilled and unskilled. Even pixel workers, the line-workers of the modern era, are fungible resources. Unplug that one, jack another one in.
Moreover, “over the coming decades, the new Oligarchs impact will be enhanced by the fact that so many have achieved their fortunes at an early age; tech Oligarchs, mostly from Silicon Valley, represent the lion’s share of billionaires under forty who are not inheritors of family fortunes. In 2014 alone at least ten new billionaires emerged from this sector.”
So not only are they young (and potentially immature even for their years), but their influence could extend over decades as they continue to live, thrive, and buy influence.
And they are, according to Kotkin, inordinately interested in influencing the shape of the country’s future direction. Like the industrial barons a century earlier, they want to protect their interests, but they are also cause-directed. But Kotkin warns that “today’s ‘philanthrocapitcalism’ differs markedly from the philanthropy of the past. Instead of helping hospitals, building libraries or supporting soup kitchens, the new Oligarchs have risen to what author David Callahan calls “affluent super-citizens,’ able to use their money to craft their own solutions to social problem.” In other words, a “do-gooder” steeped in the needs of the poor, the uneducated, the needy, doesn’t apply to the Oligarch for support of his or her charity. The Oligarch has a plan of his own for how to “fix” things.
Moreover, these new Oligarchs “depend on mass consumerism, (but they) base their fortunes primarily on the sales of essentially ephemeral goods; media,

advertising, and entertainment. These prod-ucts and services consume time and leisure more than physical space; they are less reliant on low-cost domestic energy sources, as their products are either software or built elsewhere. Indeed, many of the new Oligarchs have profited through investment in very expensive renewable energy sources that have enjoyed often lavish public subsidies.”
And here is the devil in the details: “these industries (in which the New Oligarchs are engaged) employ relatively few Americans.
Kotkin now moves on to the “Clerisy,” or those who dwell in academia, media, gov-ernment and the non-profit sector. “These groups have expanded,” he writes, “as much of the middle class has declined... (their influ-ence stems) from persuading, instructing and regulating the rest of society. This has particular impact given that the vast majority of the Clerisy are increasingly uniform in their worldview, especially in political matters, their approach to environmental issues, and their social values. In practical terms, such as in their support (for the) Democratic Party, they are both broadly allied with the tech Oligarchs and are themselves becoming a huge center of power and influence, much as the clergy was in medieval and early modern times.”
I considered that statement above, particu-larly in light of the tendency for “discussions” on Comboxes (comment boxes) on political websites, or politically-oriented posts on Facebook and other social media to devolve to “Your (sic) dumb!” “No, you are a retard (libtard, wingnut, fill in the blank)!” I realized that indeed, the Clerisy sees itself as having “the secret knowledge,” and to admit to not sharing in that belief is tantamount to admit-ting not ignorance, but stupidity verging on being backward, and to heresy.
The next group to be considered are the poor Yeomanry. Once the backbone of the nation, these are the great unwashed, the erstwhile Middle Class. Once a flourishing bastion of votes and buying power, courted by everyone, this group has shrunk to a pitiful remnant, clinging, whether bitterly or not, to its attempt to move up. “Even at the height of the latest economic expan-sion,” warns Kotkin, “the typical middle-class American saw only one percent income growth, adjusted for inflation, compared to six percent in the period from 1995 to 2000. Throughout at least the last two decades, economic change has benefited top workers at financial services companies, technology firms, and the highest-end businesses, while incomes for the middle and working classes have suffered as low-wage job have prolifer-ated.”
And of course the “fading Yeomanry threatens to create a more bifurcated
society, with an increasing number of formerly middle-class people becoming, in a sense, proletarianized.” This is doubly painful as many of this group are educated, and had higher expec-tations, unlike the serf class of the middle ages, and “the ability of less-skilled workers to break into high-wage work has slowed, trapping many in a kind of permanent status as working poor. Increasingly these workers are older and better-educated than low-wage workers in the past.”
“Rather than be helped in the new economic order,” warns Kotkin, “the once-independent Yeo-man class is expected to accepts its new role as home care providers, hairdressers, dog walkers, and toenail painters for the ‘innovative class.’”
I won’t give away the surprise ending - but suffice to say Kotkin asks the question, “Will the Middle Orders Revolt?” and then launches into a discussion of how decentralization, dispersed in-telligence, and a break in the old patterns and or-thodoxies, while difficult, has often meant a new period of Enlightenment and growth, and that the smoke-filled back rooms of yore frequently come equipped with a smart phone camera to share the discussions held therein.
No matter what your political persuasions going in, Kotkin will surprise you with an even-handed approach to pre-conceived notions and comfort you with an essential belief in our ability to rise to the occasion and reinvent our political parties, our belief systems, and ourselves. []

A Noble ExperimentA Failing Result
Over half of America is in deep struggle. The land itself is crumbling. Those that are fine and enjoying happiness and bounty are vastly in denial. The realities of what goes on within miles of all their homes is manifesting and no one wants to see. In many areas of suburbia those miles are turning into blocks and even next door. Most inner city neighborhoods are already poverty havens. The plight of the poor has been very personal. It is only this encroach-ment that is giving them voice. The struggling should not have to become our neighbor before we notice their plight.
Poverty is the elephant in the room. In their zeal to exponentially compound their power and fortunes, wealth has taken too much. Because of an unbridled pursuit by super wealth, the pursuit of happiness for the masses, our infrastructure, our military, our founding values and even quality of governing has been reduced to unimpeded de-cline. Campaign Finance Laws along with capitulating moral
decline in our leadership have robbed us of the best we can be. Only within the framework of removing benefit from poor governing is there any hope left. Within that framework “good work” must be restored to our land.
Good work – it is a birthright in any land where you cannot farm. It is also “the” key ingredient that deter-mines the success of a Government. As well, prosper-ity, strength, respect and happiness all flow from work. Work must offer fair reward less it is enslavement. Each single job strengthens your land. Failing this as our absolute perpetual priority has fostered serious conflict within government as the welfare of all is no longer the pursuit. Instead our parties we have taken sides.
Nearly all disagreement stems from how much we should care for those that have little. The answer is

we should care enough to regu-late, cause and provide enough fair work to go around. There simply can be no fairness or equal pursuit otherwise. When govern-ments fail to real-ize this absolute common denomi-nator for a strong country and a happy people you have the recipe for the stagnating, dispassionate, despicable infighting we see every day. Job creation and Job retention. That is your bottom line. Quality of life flows only from this very specific Mustard Seed.
Corporations have long recognized the subservient nature of masses and take full advantage of every measure that subdue and appease. They are not leaders of people. They are greedy and selfish. Realizing that same weakness was not protected against in American leadership, they have usurped critical governing. They fail to recall that historically when lands go too far tolerance for oppression is breached. In time cultural thinking changes. Widespread, long seeth-ing suffering eventually fosters a sense of purpose. A leader will rise and easily energize the masses. Like a match, it only takes one and
A Noble Experiment A Failing Resultall hell breaks loose. Once the masses understand the depth and unfairness of what was taken from them, a point of no return has been achieved. I believe a peaceful Revolutionary spirit will take hold. It is our systems, our leadership and our wealth that are void of crucial morality. The morality of our people is fine. That is why this is likely to happen. And that is why it is likely that there will be peaceful change. If you are in denial I would caution that history is riddled with the price of those that fail to see. I urge you to perceive what is going on beyond your comfort. The following tells you what needs to change:
How can 535 rise to rule 300 million and be blind to the very glaring evil that buys the quality of what they do? An evil that impairs on a level that is ruinous from road, to pipe, to wire, to defense, to power grid, to water, to power plant and even to human pursuit, in every county in the land. Not one champion. Where are their patriotic chills as this evil dims their beacon, their purpose and our land? In truth their patriotic chills drip through the cracks of their fingers as they extend their hand to reap to the money and power that alters fair thinking. As surely as cancer riddles a body, money buying decisions from the people has riddled our entire political system. It has twisted our thinking and left the best we can be in founding memory.
Historically and most clearly with Americas origins, the evidence is clear that there is a “boundary” within the world of oppression that when breached all hell breaks loose. Civil rights is another a good example. For a century after the Civil war Blacks lived subservi-ent lives. The arrogance of power fails to see that this “boundary” is murky and disguised and does not ap-
pear an eminent danger until a trigger is pulled and then it is too late. That trigger in this case was a leader of men. Martin Luther King. The collective suffering of the aggrieved was simmering, as it is today in social decline, and in just a few months a movement to cause justice within humankind was underway. It happens quickly and unexpectedly. This movement was peaceful. It was moral. The pursuit of equality that was stalled in moral decay, became an ongoing pursuit that thrives till this day. Though much is left to be done, it was amazing. All due to Martin Luther King’s non- violent creed. To achieve our moral force, which is more powerful than violence, to alter the course of a land, is indeed where we need to go.
The reason for the obscene environ-ment of vengeful disagreement in U.S. Government is that favor created such top heavy economics that the masses and infrastructure fell far behind. Parties took sides with one favoring wealth more than the other. The Government failed the common good. Favor left so many behind that the policy gulf between protecting wealth and being fair to infrastructure and the people became so wide that even our middle class bounty was sucked upwards. This divide forced a disastrous imbalance toward the less

My MindTo Yoursby DEBRA MERRYWEATHER
Good ChemistryNobel Prize Winner Eric R. Kandel’s book, “In Search
of Memory,” is the first book I read concerning the biology/physiology of memory formation and storage. I read the book because I had experienced memory issues during a sudden and severe brain hiccup that was accompanied by regular hiccups. Hiccups can accompany stroke in women. I did not know that. As it happened, I thought I was having a revelatory experience.
I felt I should delve into my psyche seeking therapy, journaling and painting my dreams. My efforts to decipher my memories fell short as the unfamiliar seg-ments of my internal information highway looped into cul-de-sacs or trailed off into the dark. I settled into reading about memory itself. I did not think that read-ing about how memory works would lead to memory recovery. I simply wanted to know how consciousness worked so I could understand myself. A diagnosis of celiac disease led me to quit eating grains and surpris-ing to me, when my diet changed, my memory and focus improved. I shifted my attention from the more
ethereal realms of thought to gut function and the mind body connection. I read everything I could about serotonin.
Whether we put our faith in a deity, the intellect, or only things physical, we are all chemically dependent. We are chemical beings in a chemical world. Scien-tists are just beginning to understand how chemicals, including neurotransmitters and hormones, wire or encode memory into our brains in context. Eric Kandel states that everything that enters our minds gets there through our bodily senses. Mind is not over matter. Mind springs up out of matter. If we grow a healthy mind, that good mind keeps growing with us.
Whatever our age, our basic needs are the same. Cog-nition functions best when we eat healthy food, sleep well, have the freedom to get up and move around. We need the tools and the power to manage our own lives. Stress ages us. Aging stresses us. As we age, our chemistry changes.
Since Hillary Clinton announced that she is

With 25% OffSummer is full of long days in the sun and even longer nights in the heat and
humidity. This summer, don’t spend all your time worrying about how to keep our makeup looking fresh. A few products can keep you looking hot while beating the heat.
A BB cream is your best bet for coverage this season. You don’t want to be out-side all day with a full face of foundation, so opt for something lighter with added SPF. A BB cream will give you the coverage you want without making you feel weighed down and gross if you start to sweat.
For your eyes, stick with a vibrant eyeliner. Eye shadow can crease in the heat but by adding a cobalt blue or turquoise liner in your waterline or on your top lash line, your eyes will look intense without the hassle of so many different products. Finish off your look with waterproof mascara to make sure your lashes stay curled even when you’re swimming all day.
Eyebrow gel is a must to keep your brows in place this summer. Pick something with a wand so you don’t have to carry brushes and powders around for a mid-day touch up. It’s a super easy way to finish off your look and to give you that bold brow look that is so trendy.
You lips are bound to be dehydrated by the end of a long day in the sun, so make sure you have a moisturizing lip balm. Try picking one with some pigment to add a little color to your look. A coral or raspberry color adds the perfect punch for summer.
After you’ve finished off your make-up, make sure to lock it in with a setting spray. Simply spray your face lightly and your makeup won’t end up melting half
way down your face during dinner on the patio or a walk on the beach. If you really want to feel fresh, try go-
ing without makeup this summer. Your skin will thank you for it. Of course, you always need to remember to protect your skin from sun damage with SPF, but skipping makeup all together is never a bad idea. For me, the days I can go without makeup are my favorite because I can focus on having a blast instead of running to the bathroom to fix myself up.
Regardless of what look you are going for, keeping things light and easy are the best for your summer makeup routine. Keep it minimal and you’ll end up having the best summer filled with carefree days soaking up the sun. []

Going ClearIf you are anything like me, then chances are you’ve heard of Scientology, but
have never really delved into the ideology of the religion. The extent of my knowl-edge didn’t venture much beyond the headlines of tabloid magazines and Gawker. This all changed when Alex Gibney’s enthralling documentary GOING CLEAR: SCIEN-TOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF debuted on HBO.
Featuring interviews with ex-members of the church such as filmmaker Paul Hag-gis Jason Beghe, and many, many others, the chilling and baffling saga of Scientol-ogy is explored from its very beginnings. Having found success as a science fiction writer for pulp magazines in the 30’s, L. Ron Hubbard turned his sights to more lofty content and published a book called Dianetics in 1950. The philosophy behind the book encouraged its readers to explore dark and damaging events in their past, and confront them head-on during a process known as Auditing. According to Hubbard, by doing this, the individual possesses the ability erase the incident completely, thereby eradicating the pain caused by the event.
The theories explored in Dianetics resonated with a great number of people, and Hubbard used this as the basis of Scientology. Hoping to capitalize on the populari-ty and belief system created within the pages of his book, Hubbard founded his new religion. By designating the philosophy a religion, any profits he generated would not be taxable by the IRS.
Though Hubbard went into hiding due to his battles with the IRS, he was a central figure in the growth of Scientology, and it became stronger with each passing year. Many of its members didn’t even know the ideology that the religion was meant to follow, but they liked the process of Auditing, and the closeness its members felt towards one another. Despite deplor-able treatment (allegations of physical and mental abuse were commonplace), and very little financial gain, many members worked directly for the Church with little or no complaint.
Scientology grew over the ensuing decades, and when L. Ron Hubbard passed away in 1986, his right-hand man David Miscavige took the reigns. Ambitious and tenacious, he strove to make the religion grow in popularity, and more importantly, to make it more financially lucrative.
There will be those within the world of Scientology who not only dismiss the validity of the claims made within Gibney’s searing film, but will declare that the production to be nothing more than mud-slinging propaganda. While it is true that many documentarians skew the facts in order to more effectively sell their point-of-view, it is difficult to doubt the majority of the details in GOING CLEAR. Aside from the plethora of archival footage and leaked documents, the firsthand accounts of former members of church as damning as any evidence could be. These tales aren’t woven by a few fly-by-night members who are merely looking to gain notoriety from their shocking proclamations. The stories told and details shared are done by high-ranking members who spent decades in the congregation.

Well it is one part superior product (made with high quality ingredi-ents and secret family recipes). It is one part hard work and deter-mination of a family that is so sweet they may also be part candy! And lastly it is one part support from an awesome community. The Speach family knows they couldn’t have done this without you, so in consideration of their 95th anniversary they have started a campaign called “Buy to Benefit” where 5% of their profit will be given to sup-port five local charities throughout the summer. In May they will be supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which will align with the CFF Great Strides Walk. In June, your purchases will be used to support ACR Health and will align with the AIDS Walk/ Run during that month. In July they will be supporting Hope for Heather to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer, a foundation created in memory of a high school friend of Michael Speach. In August sales will go to support Maureen’s Hope, a foundation that helps the community in a variety of ways and is instrumental in making kids smile at Golisano Children Hospital. Lastly, in September they will be donating to the Alzheimer’s Association leading up to their big fundraising walk in October. The Speach Family knows they wouldn’t be here without so much local support and this is their way to give a little something back. Stop in and help them help out some great causes!
At Speach’s they love to make your chocolate dreams a reality. They love to work with customers to create chocolate made especially for them. They are perfect for weddings, showers (they also do candy buffets!) and for corporate marketing. Give your guests something sweet to remember you by with a custom gift from Speach’s!

very pretty and the restaurant was easy to find, right off of the Tully exit on 81. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated in a comfy booth. We decided to start our meal with an order of deep fried ravioli; they were breaded, lightly fried, and stuffed with a delicious Italian cheese mixture. The fried ravioli was paired perfectly with the warm marinara sauce. For an entrée I decided on the Shrimp Rig-gies, a huge portion of rigatoni,
giant shrimp, mushrooms, peppers, and onions in Sweet Basil’s very own secret sauce. The portions were enough for lunch and the secret sauce was right on! Sara decided on one of the specials, a porterhouse steak served with a side of French fries. Her medium rare porterhouse was cooked to perfection and could have been cut with a butter knife because it was so tender. Although we were both stuffed we couldn’t pass up a slice of white chocolate raspberry cheesecake, or as we liked to call it, heaven.
The Sweet Basil is a great gem in Tully serving fantastic food. For more information check out their website at www.sweetbasiltully.com and be sure to like them on Facebook. Head over to The Sweet Basil for a great meal today! []

Advanced technology has had a positive effect on every aspect of training for all sports, and Golf is no exception. For example, with data driven technology, a series of swings on a Trackman or Flightscope can record, distance, direction, angle of attack, club-face angle at impact, ball speed & spin, launch angle, and most likely, what you had for lunch.
If you have access to advanced technology, use it to your advantage. In the hands of an enlightened coach, technology can positively impact golf skill learning.. As we’ve said previously, technology, though, is just the price of admission for high level play. There is another dimension, which is a vital piece toward our best performances, and that’s how we learn golf skills.
Remember way back when you learned so many recreational and sport skills by watching more experienced players. Skipping rocks across the water…riding your first two wheeler…that first jump shot, fielding grounders, hitting wedges over the highest trees. We observed, imitated and experimented until we found something that worked. Over time, and with practice, the skills became rhythmic, in-sync and functional.
Observation - During the observation stage, you can either watch a live demonstra-tion, which could be by one of the best players at your club, a pro, a video tape, a se-quence of pictures on television or computer screen, or assimilate a verbal explanation.
Imitation - Next: Imitate the movement you’ve observed. Whether you’re working with a coach or not, imagine the shot, rehearse the swing, and gain a feel for it.
During the imitation stage, if your working with a coach, he should use external feedback (instruction) sparingly and randomly. And sometimes, withhold feedback
Learning Golf Skills Observation, Imitation, & Experimentation
entirely as you’re allowed to attend to the tempo, the rhythm, the sound, and feel at impact, as a consequence of the swing. No thinking allowed. Just engaging your imagination!
Experimentation - Finally, experiment with this new skill by repeating the movement. With imagery combine a picture of the target, with a feel of the swing, and with the sound and feel of the club-head at impact. It will take some time, but eventually the skill will be yours! It’ll be logged into your long term memory as you modify it to meet your needs. Small tweaks may be necessary before you feel com-fortable with the new movement and begin to play automatically.
Try it! You’ll find that activating your internal feedback system like this, with no swing thoughts, really works. Your athletic mind/body is totally engaged. And that’s where we play our best games. - wbwgolf.com

Stay MotivatedMany people really struggle to
stay motivated in the winter. By motivated, I mean motivated to do anything. This includes getting off the couch, going to work, shoveling the driveway, getting out of bed, or doing any kind of physical activity. Find a way to stay motivated. Whether it is an old photo of you when you were in the best shape of your life or a picture of a bathing suit you would like to wear on an upcom-ing vacation; if it motivates you put it some place where you will see it every day. This will be a constant reminder of why you started and the fitness goals you are trying to achieve.
Eat a Healthier DietPlease, let’s stop kidding our-
selves. We can all do better when it comes to what we eat on a daily basis, especially when it comes to what we’re unconsciously shovel-ing into our mouths. There’s a good reason why one out of every four adults are obese! A healthy diet and exercise are important for staying fit, healthy and in shape, no matter what time of year it is. Thus the motto thirty percent gym, seventy percent diet. Ab’s are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.
Stay HydratedDehydration can really ruin your day. We all tend to drink less in the wintertime,

Get ready for...SUMMER!
Exercise& Fitnessby JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK
Get in Shape for SummerSummer is finally here! Can you believe it? Are you as excited as I am? It’s been
a long hard winter for many of us Central New Yorkers and I know most of you are more than ready to put away those winter coats, scarves, mittens and boots. We can now look forward to longer days, warmer weather, and the comforting sound of the crickets chirping late into the night. This is the best time of year to get together with family and friends and hit the beach, barbecue, bask in the sun’s rays while scantily clad, and enjoy long walks without freezing our tuchies off.
Though summer is one of our favorite seasons, it is also one of the most stressful. This is because summer also means that it’s time to bare our near naked flesh to the world. Now, let’s be honest with ourselves. Many of us have more than a few pounds to shed before digging out our tank tops, shorts and bathing suits. We either look at ourselves in the mirror and say, “I look pretty good” or “Uh-oh, where do I begin.”
Are you kicking yourself in the rear wishing you had started getting ready for sum-mer sooner? Do you wait until the last minute to do something about it every year? Are you feeling like you’re so far gone that you don’t even know where to begin?
Who says you can’t take the beach and everybody on it by storm this summer! You just need to make the decision to do something about it. Here are a few tips to help you get ready for the season.

which can make us feel hungry when we’re actually thirsty. Stick with water or herbal tea and avoid carbonated drinks. Most herbal teas are not caffeinated so you won’t have to worry about being up playing solitaire at three o’clock in the morning. Some herbal teas (like green tea) can even help promote weight loss.
Have a PlanIf you fail to plan, you plan to fail. It’s that simple. I have a few clients who just can’t
get the eating right thing down. I’m not going to lie; it’s the hardest part for most people. Either we eat too much of the wrong thing or we don’t eat enough which
throws the body into starvation mode and slows down the metabolism. If you want to reach your fitness goals successfully, you need to create a plan that you can follow every day. Try writing down what you eat and what you do for exercise each day. Studies have shown that people who keep journals (especially food journals) are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off than those who do not.
Have a Friendly ContestTeam up with a group of friends who
also want to get in shape for summer and have a friendly contest. Have each par-ticipant throw in twenty or thirty dollars, since money is always a great incentive to lose a few pounds. Pick a day each week where all of you can weigh in, and after a few months (or however long your group decides); the participant with the greatest percentage of weight loss will be awarded all of the money.
Train, Train, and TrainDon’t waste any more time. Incorporate two to three days a week of strength train-
ing and three to five days a week of cardio into your routine. Don’t know what you’re doing? Purchase a few sessions with a personal trainer. Personal trainers are experts in the fields of fitness and weight loss and they are your go to when you are look-ing for assistance with your exercise routine. Not only will a personal trainer design a customized program specific for your goals, he or she will help you get maximum results in a minimal amount of time.

Dual Camera ModeI saw a fun picture from a friend on Facebook recently: it was a lovely nature shot
(for which she’s famous) with a “selfie” of her in a little stamp on the photo.Clever, I thought. But then I realized that a couple of other people had posted similar shots, and they
were mobile uploads - which meant, they had to have been uploaded on location from the phone, not downloaded and doctored afterwards.
Naturally, there are a number of apps available for your phone that will process photos - saturating or desaturating color, applying filters like “sketch” or “cartoon,” and processes like cropping or even attaching two different halves or slices of a photo to another photo - interleaving them.
But this one I had not seen before. Then I realized there was a watermark or “stamp” on the photo that said “Photography by Samsung Galaxy.” The Galaxy of course is the Android tablet, which comes equipped with a camera. In case you’ve missed this - most smart phones and tab-lets take better photos than many cameras these days. And, because they are “smart” devices, you have access to all those aforementioned apps that allow you to look like you’re extremely clever - or, to be extremely clever and creative with your photos.
So I did my homework and found out that yes, there were apps that allowed for double-sided photography. Now, I’m not positive that the method my friend used for her photo was this dual mode camera, but it is in fact one way of creating such a photo.
The basic idea is, in a way, an extension of the “selfie.” It allows the photographer to take a picture of him or herself against a background of his choosing, but get-ting a perfect image of the background and not sacrificing it for the addition of a strained looking image of him or herself.
Or, alternatively, get a nice shot of yourself against a random neutral or framing background that lets you take advantage of beautiful light, a nice sky, or excellent sunset.
With the iPhone, the app is called Dual Shot, but there are several such apps avail-able on the various platforms.
The app allows you to find a shot you like on one side, of your camera - using the camera in its standard mode - and then include a “window” on the other side, in “selfie” mode. With a little creativity, you don’t necessarily have to include your face in the window, but could ostensibly include a window with anything you wanted on the main body of the photo. The possibilities are as limited as your imagination. []

This is a well-seasoned band. They have great chops but more importantly they’ve been playing together a long time, which means they are counting to 4 in their own special way - not to mention the twelve years of rocking together, which means they have their own sense of musical ESP. Which again = results in having their own mat-ter of style. And since this is rock and roll, baby, it should have a matter of style.
Mean hands on these musicians, but fun gentlemen off the stage. We had a few laughs.
CS: So this particular lineup has been together for about 5 years, if I understand it right. But also twelve. What?
John: The four of us have been together for about 12-13 years. Previously we had a female lead singer and decided that we needed to go in a different direction in order to play the songs we wanted to play. We have a more muscular sound now.
Andy: It’s been just the 4 of us for the last 5 years.Mark: I met Andy through a mutual friend at a gig. He was playing bass in the
band and my acoustic trio did a few tunes during the break and he came up jammed with us on a couple. We were looking to round out the band so Andy came aboard.
Pete: I was the last cog. A previous incarnation of the band was already function-ing. I had been completely out of circulation for about 7 years or so - sticks literally hung above the fireplace, when my old friend (and distant cousin) John called me out of the blue one evening wondering if I was looking to play.
CS: Hmmm. Sounds kinda complicated. Haha. You certainly to play together like you’ve been playing together a long time. Cool. I’ve also become aware that I’m the first to feature you in an editorial. I’m totally scratching my head on this. How is it that no one has covered this group before?
Andy: Not sure really. John: Not sure, but there are a lot of cover bands around, and most of the cover-
age I’ve seen is on younger artists playing original music, or at least music that sounds original.
Mark: We’ve managed to stay somewhat below the radar until just the last couple
years. Our profile is a little high-er now thanks to gigs like Taste of Syracuse and Vinyl-Albums Live.
CS: Well, I’m delighted to have the honor. You’re a terrific band. Ok, so on with a standard question: If you were presenting the band for the first time today, how would you characterize your music?
Andy : Classic Rock focusing on 60’s and 70’s era...John: ... Music that we grew up with and still love...Mark: ...Stuff people know. Some stuff people don’t realize they know! Nothing too
heavy. Stuff you can shake your ass to!...Pete: ...Lots of Allman Brothers, Doors, The Beatles, The Cream and a generous
spattering of other somewhat similar stuff.CS: We’ve established what you sound like and how long you’ve been rockin.
You’ve been together a long time. What’s your secret to that success? John: We love playing together, we’re friends. No major personality conflicts, let-
ting stuff go sometimes, understanding that the music and the band is bigger than each of us as individuals.
Mark: Communication is the key,y, I think. Treating each other with respect. Not playing so much that it becomes a chore.
Andy: I’d have to chalk it up to experience, both in our prior endeavors and to-gether as a group
Pete: Also, retooling after a previous incarnation gave us an opportunity to re-invent ourselves; it added a spark of something new [for us]. We also have pushed ourselves and have been included in some rather ambitious projects. Working so hard on such common goals has helped to keep the spark sparkin’.
CS: Nice. That’s what it’s all about. How did you each get started in music?John: My mother loved music, sang in the church choir, and she instilled that love
of music into me. Piano lessons in grade school and love of rock’n’roll. After that, discovering people like Ray Charles and other genres opened up a whole new world that continues to unfold for me to this day.
Pete: Truthfully, I don’t remember. Music has always just been. My earliest recollec-tions of life involve music - sitting in a high chair on a sunny spring morning after my brothers had left for school and hearing Sweet Caroline on the radio (which my par-ents always had playing) - singing along to records - The Beatles specifically - when is was 3 years old. I started classical piano lessons when I was 6. My teacher, Professor John Hutchinson, studied during the summers when he was a teenager, in Vermont under the Von Trapps (yes THOSE Von Trapps!) When I was 10 I discovered the drums
(the death knell for the piano)! A neighbor that lived across the street played and let me give his kit a try one day. Inexplica-bly, I was able to play a beat

on my first attempt.
Mark: I got started by listening to the re-cords my parents had. My Mom was into the Beatles and Elvis
and Little Richard. My dad was a jazz guy. Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubek, Big band stuff. My first and biggest influence on guitar was and is Eric Clapton.
Andy: Music runs deep in my family. My Dad was a doo wop singer in the fifty’s, My mother is an accomplished piano player and there was always music in our house growing up. My aunt is a music teacher and that’s where I got my start learn-ing instruments. I played Tuba, sousaphone and trombone in school, then my father bought me a bass and an amp for Christmas one year, and the rest was history
CS: Please offer a Barndog highlight.Andy: Strictly the 4 of us, I would say “Vinyl albums Live the second” where we
performed the LA Woman album by The Doors in 2011 It was a coming out party of sorts for us. If we’re counting the Barndogs PLUS Allman Bros Tribute, I’d have to say playing in front of 8000 or so opening for Blues Traveler at Taste of Syracuse 2014. That was a rush
Mark: A personal highlight of mine was being invited by Doug Gray to jam with The Marshall Tucker band at BalloonFest. He was standing side stage watching us do our Allman Brothers set and came up to me and told me he liked the way I play and would I be interested in sitting in with his band. Very cool for me. Opening for The Outlaws at Fireworks over Utica was another great show. Huge crowd really into our show.
John: Have to say opening for Marshall Tucker at Balloonfest and having your guitar player asked to join in with them onstage for a few songs. Also, opening for John Popper and Blues Traveller at Taste of Syracuse. That was the biggest crowd – 7 or 8 thousand - and we played an Allman Brothers set with extra players and the response from that big crowd was definitely a highlight.
Pete: For me, It was being posed with the idea of The Barndogs Plus - a tribute to The Allman Brothers, bringing in additional players who have included Chad Mac, Tim Robinson, JT (Jerry Tarolli) and Sue Royal. Specifically playing the opening slot just before Blues Traveler on the Taste of Syracuse Main Stage - in front of roughly 7k-ish people.
CS: Way cool. Good memories indeed. OK. Now.... this is the part of the show where I ask the most serious question of all time. Crazy Barndog war story?
John: Years ago we used to play this place down in Groton and it was a younger crowd, inexperienced bartenders, and no bouncer. The band is lined up against a wall facing the bar, so the patrons are close. Fight breaks out and Andy and our singer at the time get kind of pushed back against me and Pete. Our singer, a fe-male, showed no fear pushing back. We stopped playing there after that.
CS: Your thoughts on the CNY music scene?Mark: I love the scene in Syracuse. For the most part everyone supports each
other. It’s a small town so you have to get along with people. We can all succeed. There are plenty of good quality gigs out there to be had. I’m very lucky because not only do I play with The Barndogs but I also have an acoustic duo, McArdell & Westers, and I play with the very talented Lisa Lee. There are some great musicians in Syra-cuse. I’m happy to be part of it.
Andy: Love it, we are very lucky to have such a diverse, active scene for a city our size
John: There is a lot of musical talent here for a town this size. I think if you’re looking to see live music you can pretty much find most genres covered. I think it’s mostly a country and classic rock type of audience that goes out, and the younger players have a few outlets to ply their craft. R&B and folk also draw.
CS: How about some good ‘ol-pro Barndog advice for the musicians coming up through the ranks?
John: Believe in what you’re doing. There is no shortage of people telling you
you’re wrong. Practice as a band so you play together as a single unit. Don’t get caught up in your own ego. If you write, keep writing, and writing, and writing.
Mark: My advice would be to study music. Read and write. I wish I had when I was younger. I’m just self taught and have fun doing what I do. But don’t really consider myself a “real” musician.
Andy: Don’t stop, don’t ever stop. Also and maybe more importantly, play for your-self, do it because you enjoy it.
CS: What’s on the horizon for you Barndogs?Pete: Steady as she goes.. Andy: More album projects for sure, and expanding our offerings of the classic
rock genre we cover. There may be some original work in the future as well. You never know
John: Keep doing what we’re doing, adding new material and having fun.Mark: Who knows what the plan is? We know our place. We are a bunch of old
guys playing covers. Keep learning new songs that make people want to dance a little and have a few cock-tails.
CS: Where do we find you?Mark: Find us on Face-
book. The Barndogs. And of course the Table Hopping club listings.
CS: Thanks for hanging out, guys. Great visiting with you.
Barndogs: Thanks, Chuck!=======Chuck Schiele is an award-win-

GOING CLEAR rivals any Hollywood thriller when it comes to suspenseful twists and turns. Each spoken word is more baffling than the one that proceeded it, with terms such as “brain-washing”, “slave-labor”, “kidnapping” and “abuse” being tossed around on a frequent basis.
Virtually every film, whether it is a work of fact or fiction, needs a villain. GOING CLEAR certainly has its fair share. While believers still praise and salute the spirit of their beloved founder, Hubbard was not without his flaws. He is portrayed as an intelligent and talented man, but his insatiable need for wealth and recognition be-came the driving force of the Scientology movement. Then, when Miscavige became the leader of the religion, conditions deteriorated further. Under his watch, and with a little help from Tom Cruise, the religion has become a tyrannical and terrifying enterprise that has found its numbers dwindling, but its power (and capital) growing.
In the ensuing months, it will be interesting to witness the ramifications of Gibney’s expose. Those within Scientology are denouncing the film, despite the
fact that many of them (including John Travolta) haven’t even watched it. For the rest of us, however, it is a film that isn’t likely to be forgot-ten, and certainly one that raises a number of vital questions. []

GRADE: A
seeking the presidency, I have read editorials suggesting generally that a woman of Mrs. Clinton’s age is best suited for governing because an older woman no longer experiences hormonal fluctuations. As fortune would have it, I have also just read two chapters of “Wom-en After All: Sex, Evolution, and the End of Male Supremacy,” by Melvin Konner, M.D. Dr. Konner states that, today, across a “huge range of cross-cultural variation – three orders of magnitude, or a thousand-fold – it remains a robust claim: men do the great majority of killings in every culture.” Testosterone is involved.
Testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and androgen are all bio-chemicals that together with dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and cortisol, create the shared, and fluctuating, emotional climate in which we all live. Yet throughout the world, most societies measure all of their members against one predominant standard and that standard involves masculinity. Early on, physically powerful outer directed skills linked to testosterone, such as hunting and war, eclipsed the cultural significance of oxytocin driven nurturing work such as feeding the young. Probably none of us wants others to see us as physical beings. Still, the physical matters, and matters a lot. Women should be respected both as nurturers of life and as individuals who par-ticipate in the larger circle of activity in the world. Yet in the mating game, that is for sure, no game, women and men often perceive each other with chemically charged expectations. When chemicals run thin, feelings sometimes change. We are all whole persons, multi-faceted and unique. That saves us.
Our neurochemistry seeks to control us.Research shows that when teenage males take risks, biology rewards them with
a dopamine surge. Some risks involve teenage girls. The book, “Women After All” states, “The freer and more educated girls and women become, the fewer children they have; men are proven obstacles to family planning.” Family planning generally falls on women, presenting societal and health challenges together with risks to the brain. Hormone based oral contraceptives alter neurochemistry, affecting mood and raising stroke risk, while pregnancy itself significantly raises stroke risk. Pregnancy is naturally stressful as neurochemicals shift and adapt, and research shows an un-naturally stressful pregnancy can adversely affect both mother and child, sometimes sending epigenetic change into the next generation.
The good news is we know these things now. In his book, “The Upward Spiral,” Alex Korb, PhD, provides concrete neuroscientifically based suggestions for improv-ing how we feel by getting to know how we think and perceive.
Learning is lifelong. There are many pathways, books, and thoughts to think.Happy May. []

together the night before and just pop it in the oven the next morning. Delicious!”

1 1/2 pounds Cheddar cheese, shredded

paying for! If you go three to four times a week consistently all winter long, you won’t have to feel like you’re chasing your own tail come spring and summer. Why be the crash dieter, the two workouts a day slave to the gym, or the shun carbs forever advocate. If you can make an honest effort to eat clean and exercise all year round, you will be one step ahead of everyone else when the warmer weather rolls around.
In Conclusion:Losing weight and getting in shape doesn’t

fortunate. Just to be ok a man and a wife are enslaved for life to huge corporations. Minimum wage earners are no more than slaves. The 20% unemployed fester with nothing. The 5.5% they tell you about is a lie so you are not perpetually alarmed. The employee is seldom part the corporate vision. Corporate vision is to pay just enough to ward off rebellion, develop ways to eliminate workers and suck all profits to the top. Wealth has no desire to pay fair wages. Even when doing so would not remove them from the top 1%. Your roads, bridges, buildings, dams and power grids are fall-ing apart as they fly their private planes from mansion to mansion.
The combination of corporate greed and Political acquiescence and disregard for our people sent our work overseas. Rather than innovate and lead and find ways to retain quality wages and quality products, Business and Government threw the pursuit of American happiness to the dogs. For decades we read the headlines as our company’s and jobs left the country. Everyone knew that the only possible result of each headline was a decline in American well-being. The masses were powerless. They had no say. If they did it would not have happened nor would it continue. Di-rection is set by power. The powerful went full steam ahead; with their CEO’s anxious to exploit people and lands. They succeeded on massive scale. They “the few” were stunned they could amass such wealth. The exploitation of other lands (which is still going on as I write) was shameful. Our Middle Class Shrank and millions became the teeming poor we once sought, yearning to breathe free.
Please look at the following chart. “Your” pursuit of happiness is now a pursuit of indescribably obscene wealth and happiness “for” a very few. As most of us live on the precipice of calamity our beautiful Bays are filled with the yachts of the few and our most pristine lands are dotted with their mansions. This as millions of us labor daily and then swelter in densely popu-lated neighborhoods with crumbling infrastructure:
The Top 1 Percent Of Americans Owns 40 Percent Of The Nation’s Wealth:
The bottom 80 percent own only 7 percent: This is a 2007 chart. It is worse today. []
