EVERY NIGHT!• We Sauté • We Broil • We Bake When I moved here to Syracuse about 5 years ago I was a guy who had to
start all over in a new music city that doesn’t know me. On the west coast I had 30 years of building up my deal, so it was no longer di�cult to get shows or sell records. I never really had to call for a gig in my last several years there.... I just answered emails or the phone and said “yes” or “no.”
The name of the game when you go to a city where you are anonymous is to start making friends. The �rst person I made myself known to was Dave Fri-sina on the advice of my old pal Bruce Clayton. And while some of the doors I was knocking on would reply, “never heard of you, go away...” Dave spun my record at the very next airing of his show. The song was called “Sixteen Seconds,” and it includes an instrumental passage that I designed to last for 16 seconds. No one ever got that, including my band. Dave listened to this song and emailed me referencing that exact passage and that he thought it was neat.
I was blown away. Blown away because this tells me he’s really listening. After all, who listens closely in our fast-moving, microwave-quick, low atten-tion span world, anymore.?

Obviously, I was an instant fan of Dave because, for him, it really is about the music. Since then I’ve regarded him as the most important human energy in Syracuse’s original music. And while music scenes everywhere are replete with critics who are above going out to enjoy or encourage music, it seems like every time I go out to see live music, there he is, right over there hanging out, talking with musicians. He’s not trying to be attached to anyone else’s fame or momentum or buzz. Dave digs music. Dave digs Syracuse music. A total fan. He’s keeping a very important art form alive and well from his corner of the listening world. And you should be grateful you have him here.
You know him well if you listen to the radio. Probably more than I do. Here’s your chance to know him a little bit more in our candid conversation.
CS: Hi Dave. How are’ya?DF: I’m doing well, Chuck, thanks.CS: Thanks for doing this interview. DF: Thank you. Happy to do it.CS: I think your story begins in Long Island: Did your interest in music begin
there? How’d you get to Syracuse?DF: My interest in music began there as I started playing trumpet in 4th
grade, then switched to baritone horn in 8th grade. Through high school I was in Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Jazz Band . My interest in radio was listening to WABC out of NYC on a transistor radio. Later, listening to WLIR and WNEW-fm.
CS: How did you get to Syracuse? DF: I got to Syracuse via Cortland State, where I graduated as a Phys. Ed.
Major. I had also been part of the staff of the student run radio station, WSUC. While looking for a teaching job I heard about a station in Syracuse signing on (95X in 1978) and applied for a weekend position.
CS: You have quite tenure in Syracuse radio. Tell us about your history as a deejay.
DF: From weekends on 95X, I was ‘promoted’ to overnights. Eventually
grabbing the midday slot and along the way the Music Director position, Asst. Program Director & PD. After 25 years at 95X , I then spent 8 years at TK99 before joining 105.9 The Rebel in January 2012. I’ve just recently also been hosting 2 daily five hour syndicated Classic Rock shows for the Westwood one

path.DF: Believe it or not, it was a highlight early in my career to be the station
mascot, the 95X Rockin Rooster. Being nominated for Music Director of the Year and PD of the year by Billboard and Radio & Records Magazine was a nice acknowledgement. But, being inducted into the SAMMY’s Hall of Fame
was certainly been a career highlight, along with serving as MC for the Hall of Fame ceremony for the past few years. Hosting my (freeform) “Soulshine show on Sunday’s (from 10a-2p) and Local music on “Soundcheck’ since ’79 (Sunday’s 9-10p) has been extra rewarding. Building The Rebel into the sta-tion that it is and continuing to expand its programming is the most fun (and work) I’ve had in my career.
CS: I like it when deejays get to call the plays. I listen to your shows often because of exactly that. Thanks for doing that style of programming. How has the Syracuse music scene changed and/or evolved during your career, here.
DF: There were bigger crowds of younger people (which started to change when drinking age was raised) and the bands had more production elements (light techs and sound ). Plus, the clubs advertised and promoted the bands more (and that was pre-internet.)
There was a shift to more free admission shows just to get people in the door, and lately there seems to be growth in the amount of venues & events that are booking bands, but the younger audience (18-30’s) hasn’t really come back around in the ‘live’ music club scene.
CS: Been nice riding your bike in December?DF: This year has been exceptionally favorable for late-season riding, I’ll be
out Christmas Eve!CS: Tell us what music means to Dave Frisina.DF: It’s a creative audio expression, an escape, a communal experience and
a connection to a common positive pulse. And it’s fun to dance & sing along, too.
CS: As a musician in this scene I say, “THANk YOU,” for putting the time, effort and love into local music the way you do. You’ve been doing this for a long time. Elaborate on the what and why’s, please.
DF: I’ve been fortunate to be in a position to be able to promote something that I believe in, and make lifelong friends along the way. I understand how great it feels to play music, individually & as part of a band, as well as being an involved spectator. I’m a music fan. Music can bring people together and we
have some in-credibly gifted and talented musicians in our commu-nity. I’d like to do what I can to spread the word.
CS: Amen to that! You spin relevant music as a career, you’re out and about enthu-siastically as a fan of music, and among the most welcom-ing to music and musicians. I can’t wait to how you respond to this: What do you have to say to the CNY audi-ence in regard to the music scene, here?

When I made my way up to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA on De-cember 17, I expected to see lines wrapped around the entire level. This was, after all, the moment that I and countless others had been waiting for. STAR WARS was �-nally here. To my surprise, the lines weren’t all that long. There were folks sporting Yoda ears, rocking Han Solo jackets, and there were plenty of Princess Leia hairdos, but, I was surprised at how few people were there. It was 6:15pm, and the show started at 7:00. Where was everyone?! Well, as it turns out, the people I had expected to see were already in the theater. What I was looking at was the line that had

begun to form for the 9:00pm show. After months of waiting, what would a few more hours matter if it ensured you a prime seat at the movie event of the year?
Opening night of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was every bit the spectacle that I had hoped it would be. This was more than just a movie, it was an event. Despite the air of electric excitement, there was a tangible sense of fear. Would the quality of the new production be on par with the legendary original series? Or, would audiences be left with the hollow feel-ing they felt when they walked out of the theater at the conclusion of THE PHANTOM MENACE? With director JJ Abrams at the helm, and original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill back on board, there was certainly reason to believe that the franchise would �nd its footing once again.
When the show time �nally arrived, the screen went black, the STAR WARS emblem blazed across the screen and the familiar opening notes of John Wil-liams iconic score blasted throughout the cinema. At this point, the capacity crowd erupted in rapturous applause. This, as I would soon learn, wasn’t to be the last time that the audience let loose exclamations of unadulterated joy.
It seemed impossible for THE FORCE AWAKENS to live up to its own unre-lenting hype, but in the end, it cer-tainly did. From the �rst scene to the last, Abrams’ �lm is every bit as excit-ing, entertaining, and gratifying as any STAR WARS fan could ever hope it would be. The opening sequence introduces us to a band of ruthless storm troopers, lead by the masked Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), one of the leaders of the ruthless First Order. They are in search of a map that will lead them to the last remaining Jedi, Luke Skywalker. The map had been placed in the hands of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) a resistance �ghter who, in turn, entrusts the invaluable map to his droid BB-8. Poe is captured and taken prisoner, while BB-8 escapes undetected.
Poe puts forth his best e�orts in his attempts to keep the map’s location a secret, but Ren uses the dark-side of
Star Wars: The Force Awakens provides over two hours of sheer enter-tainment. This production is a prime example of why we love going to the movies; escapism at its best.

the Force to extrapolate the information he needs. Dameron is to be imprisoned within the massive ship, never to see the light of day again. Miraculously, he crosses paths of rogue Storm Trooper FN-2187 (John Boyega) who wants to escape his life of murderous servitude. Together, they make a daring escape aboard a TIE fighter ship. Poe explains that he needs to recover his missing droid, because the little bot holds the key to the galaxy’s salvation. After effectively putting some distance between themselves and their persuants, they are eventually shot down and crash on the planet of Jakku. The former Storm Trooper, now known as Finn, awakens to watch his escape vehicle sink into the sand. Unable to find his new friend, he assumes the worst.
Finn makes his way to a trading post, where he meets a young woman scavenger named Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her newly acquired droid. Finn realizes that the droid is the same one that Poe had been looking for, and convinces Ray that they need to escape before the First Order finds them. Unfortunately for them, their whereabouts have already been discovered, and the chase begins.
All of these events take place within the first fifteen minutes of the film, and this is where the plot synopsis ends. Prior to its release, details about the production were sparse, something that is very rare in the modern spoiler-heavy entertainment world. I, like the majority of others watching on opening night, had no idea what was going to unfold, and how Ford, Fisher, and Hamill would fit in to the picture. These unfolding discoveries aided heavily in the resounding success of THE FORCE AWAKENS, and I refuse to be the one who spills any more of the beans.
The reason this incarnation of STAR WARS works so well isn’t due to some glorious sense of nostalgic gratification. While it is true that it was wonderful to see the original cast members back in action, it was even more satisfy-ing to see them do well. Unlike the clunky dialogue and hollow performances seen in PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and REVENGE OF THE SITH, the cast in THE FORCE AWAKENS delivered their lines and executed their actions with a genuine sense of passion and precision. Newcomers Ridley and Boygea were up to the monumental task of sharing the screen with some of the most rec-ognizable characters in the history of film, and were welcome addi-tions to this brand new STAR WARS cannon. It certainly didn’t hurt that the story was intense and interest-ing, allowing the production to be-come an extension of the original series. It serves as the progression of a saga that has captivated audi-ences for decades, and continues to win over new fans with each passing day. With his film, Abrams has once again reminded why they fell in love with these characters and their stories in the first place. The special effects are brilliant, the
action is fast-paced and electrifying, and most importantly, watching the flick provides over two hours of sheer entertainment. This production is a prime example of why we love going to the movies; escapism at its best. It is a prime example of what big-budget blockbusters should be, and I’m hoping this is just the magnificent first glimpse into the future wonderment that is to come.

Bell-bottoms, skinny jeans, pixie cuts, and vinyl records are just a few trends that have come and gone throughout the years. The list goes on and on of things that go in and out and back in during our lifetime. When it comes to beer, the same holds true. While our society in general is used to light lagers and the occasional IPA, there are some kinds of specialty beers that have been revived in relatively recent years. Take for instance the gruit. I have read about them extensively and had one at a beer bar in Washington, D.C. but didn’t know it. A recent visit to Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. in Ontario, Canada was another delightful reintroduction to the gruit, a beer with many variations. A gruit is basically a beer that does not use hops, but instead uses herbs such as myrtle, heather, and yarrow to name a few. It isn’t known ex-actly when gruits were brewed, but this ancient tradition seems to stem from Continental Europe around the Middle Ages. Hops were introduced to beer from around the 11th to 16th centuries (according to Wikipedia).
My introduction to gruits was a heavenly concoction by the name of Fraoch Heather Ale, brewed by Williams Brothers Brewing Company in Scotland. This ale is available here in Central New York; you just have to look for it. Before I knew what a gruit was, I secretly wished that there were beers infused with herbs, rose petals and the like. With craft brewers becoming more and more
experimental, avoiding things such as arti�cial lime �avors like some big brewers use, many herbs and interesting combinations are produced on a regular basis. One of the world’s oldest beer styles, Sahti, is a Finnish ale that uses a combination of unmalted and malted grains, �avored with juniper berries and �ltered with juniper twigs. The Kalevala, a national epic poem that in part pays homage to its beer brewing tradition is a testament to its
importance in Finnish culture. I have yet to try a true Sahti, but American breweries have had their experimen-tation with it, such as Dog�sh Head’s Sah’Tea, Boston Beer Company’s Norse Legend Sahti, and Goose Island Com-pany’s Sahti to name a few. At Beau’s in Canada, I tried two delicious variations of their Bog Water, a gruit made with bog myrtle. Beau’s has received signi�-cant recognition for their gruit: “Beau’s has made a name for itself with gruits since the brewery introduced Bog Water in 2008, which is made with bog myrtle harvested by an Algonquin na-tive from the wilds of northern Quebec instead of hops.” (The Ottawa Citizen, Jan. 30, 2014) Gruit has become such a popular style that February 1st is International Gruit Day, which started in 2013 when craft brewers declared it as such to raise awareness of the gruit and to praise the historical traditions of brewing with botanicals.
Another interesting beer that has made a local revival is the traditional Polish Grodziskie, a smoked, clear wheat malt with a history that goes back to around 14th to 15th cen-tury Poland in the town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. A widely popular beer, Grodziskie saw a decline after Com-

munism took over in Poland. By as late as 1993, the last brewery to produce it in Poland was shut down. However, WT Brews in Baldwinsville (a New York State Farm Brewery opened to the public in 2014 by Founder Mike Johnson and beer brewed by Rich Pinkows-ki) revived the Grodziskie locally and it has received rave reviews since its release. Honestly, I am not a fan of any smoked beer, but WT’s Grodziskie immediately won me over. If you haven’t tried it yet, head out to their new tasting room at 3 West Genesee Street in down-town Baldwinsville. Trust me, it’s worth the drive. You can get it on tap or buy a few bottles for yourself or to give as a great gift. Sorry, but I’m keeping my Grodziskie!
There are so many other wonder-ful styles that embody the “what’s old is new again” concept along with completely experimental new craft beers that are popping up everywhere around the country. If you haven’t tried some traditional European beers in awhile or these revived styles, I highly suggest you give your palate a wonderfully new experience that is traditions old. You don’t need to put on vintage clothing or listen to vinyl to enjoy nouveau old style beers – it’s all new to you! Cheers!

In 2014, 117 Police officers were killed in the line of duty. The average is 162. Each Year there are 58,930 assaults against Police resulting in 15,404 Police injuries. There were 16,121 murders in the United States in 2014. There were 2.1 million emergency department visits for assault, 21,007 rapes, 94,403 Robberies, (which include physical force) 237,934 burglaries, 1,238,190 larce-nies, 68,422 auto thefts, 498,666 violent crimes, 1,561,231 drug impaired vio-lations, 102,336 offenses against family and children, 1,117,852 driving under the influence, 414,854 drunkenness arrests, and 436,014 arrests for disorderly conduct. In virtually every instance there are victims and human suffering. In virtually every instance a Police Officer became involved. In every statistic, and look at these numbers, guns are often involved. A rare breed of hero, one that loves his/her country and all that it stands for, steps up to every single one of these incidents. Regardless of danger.

And it should be said that any difficulty is a Chief and Mayoral problem and not a rank and file problem. I have not heard the media say this even once. They blanket blame on those brave Americans that look evil in the eye (guns, knives punks and gang members, rapist and murderers) and say “No”. Not in my land. Over my dead body. An emotional media has reached highly inap-propriate levels of avoiding truth and fact. They falsely indoctrinate the citi-zens of America with suspicion rather than respect, appreciation, and honor. The damage they do is untold and the need for ratings creates an oblivious attitude as they gravely and wrongly harm the very character of the finest in the land. Perspective is totally missing. Perspective is what this is about.
The difficulties that the media is saturating you with are less than 1/100th of 1 percent of Police. No one has told you that. That leaves 99 and 99/100 percent of Police that bravely and with great honor are risking their lives pro-tecting us and our children. It is not wrong for the media to pick up on public complaints. It is wrong without balancing with perspective. It is wrong to exploit heroes for ratings. You might hear a rare nod of a few words saying that most Police are doing a fine job and then prolonged saturating coverage of a negative incident. The result has been that all are demeaned. Recklessly in every town and city. Perspective protecting the rest and protecting their reputation has not been a concern. And that is the problem. In this vulture
culture, once a story is found it is then told repeatedly in a way that sells, truth, right and honest perspective be damned. This is sad and wrong, it offends the brave and elite, and harms our country...so a little more about what is really going on:

I am proud to announce that in December, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail launched a new logo, making the most dramatic change to its visual identity since the organization’s inception in 1983. A year ago, when I accepted the position as director, a new logo was on my list of things to do. It was time for the Trail to have a fresh new image that reflected who we are as a unified group of passionate wine makers, many of whom have been part of the New York wine industry since long before the Finger Lakes began attracting atten-tion as a notable wine region.
After a thorough proposal process, the Trail contracted with Clark CSM Mar-keting Communications in Pittsford, NY to help construct an updated visual representation of their identity in the form of a new logo and brand image. When we started looking at the characteristics that were unique to the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, themes around tradition and heritage kept showing up, and in fact Cayuga Lake had the first wine trail in America. Ultimately it became clear to us that the most powerful way to dif-ferentiate the brand in the mind of the consumer was to celebrate its longev-ity and history.”
The design elements of the new file contain the “vine to wine” concept from the former logo, a weathered look and the words “America’s First” for authenticity, and is in the shape of a seal, exemplifying the quality of product produced by our members.
Cayuga Lake wineries pioneered the wine trail concept, which has been mimicked by numerous organized trails across the country ever since. Many of the founding members of the Trail are still involved, working alongside their small team in all aspects from harvest and production to sales and marketing. Their hands-on ap-proach to running their wineries sets the stage for friendly service and handcrafted products, sealed with their per-sonal approval.

There are a lot of chicken and veal options (Parmigiana, Marsala, or Francaise to name a few). The seafood selections are unbeatable, try the Haddock Italiano with broiled haddock with sautéed peppers, onions, clam broth and mush-rooms in a stewed tomato, wine sauce served over fettuccine, topped with Asiago cheese. Since Santangelo’s is and has always been a family ran and owned restaurant they have signature spe-cials based on family members’ favorite recipes. Try the Grilled Filet Alita (a sliced filet served with a shiitake port wine sauce over garlic mashed potatoes), the Primavera Ala Camille (broccoli, roasted peppers and mushrooms in marinara sauce over fettuccine topped with fresh moz-zarella), or the Stuffed Veal Raymo (veal stuffed with prosciutto, spinach and artichoke hearts in a tomato marsala wine sauce with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese, served over fettuccine). Lastly, whatever you do be sure to save room for one of their many mouth-watering desserts!
My friend Keri and I went to Santangelo’s on an unseasonably warm December night. We were immediately greeted by the friendly hostess and given a cozy booth wherein we would enjoy a fantastic deal. We immediately noticed the win-dow decorations, each window was decorated with a holiday theme, and we were sitting at the adorable Grinch theme window! We were starv-ing so we decided to start with two appetizers, first we had the Samuel’s Sampler with savory Clams Casino, freshly breaded Fried Mozzarella, the best Fried Calamari in town and heaping Stuffed Mushrooms. We also couldn’t pass up the daily appetizer special of lightly breaded, super creamy goat cheese served with bruschetta and lightly toasted bread. Both appetizer were mouth-watering perfection. For an entrée I decided on the Addie Ala Vodka Sauce, with penne pasta with mushrooms and peas in a vodka cream sauce and topped with delicious grilled shrimp. The vodka sauce was the perfect combination of cream and tomato that paired perfectly with the jumbo shrimp. Keri decided on the 12 oz Delmonico Steak topped with sautéed mushrooms in a seasoned wine au jus, served with a large side of garlic mashed potatoes. There was no need for a steak knife, the wonderfully cut of Delmonico and the perfect cooking made this steak tender and juicy and cut like butter. It was perfection on a plate. Although we were stuffed, Santangelo’s has some of the best desserts in town. We decided to split a homemade raspberry cannoli and a lemon mascarpone cake with berries. These desserts were a stupendous end to one of the best meal’s we’d had in a while!

alism that keeps them alive. It is their willingness to do this for us that gives us a chance to pursue happy lives. Here are just a few examples of the char-acter of Syracuse Police. They all have humbling stories to tell that if known would make us, often very sad but always, all so proud:
Syracuse Police Officer Wallie Howard Jr. was shot and killed during an undercover drug investigation. He was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and was attempting to purchase narcotics from two drug dealers. The two suspects shot and killed Officer Howard as they attempted to rob him of the money. Officer Howard is survived by his mother, fiancé and two children.
Syracuse Police Officer and Army Medic Tom Santmeyer was decorated for tending to the wounded while under fire in Iraq. Tom navigated bullets pinging off the sand and metal around him as he went from soldier to soldier, dragging them to safer position and performing the emergency attention that would keep them alive.
Syracuse Police Officer Dan Cecile, just a few weeks prior to retirement was called to a shooting incident on the South side of Syracuse. Dan spot-ted the armed suspect and a chase ensued through south side backyards. At any moment Dan could have been shot. He caught the suspect and took him down. Dan made it to retire-ment.
Three of innumerable examples of selfless bravery from Syracuse, a small city in Central New York. Imagine this elite presence throughout America and you have American Police. In the American environment where the brave endlessly subdue evil, the vast majority of us are seldom thinking of bad guys. America is a place where com-fort and security are a cherished and hallowed achievement. And it is this way because of Cops.
Every year between 120 and 180 Police offi-cers are killed in the line the duty.
New York State has the ominous record of leading in the number of deaths nearly every year. Cops are a special breed. Honor, Compassion, and Bravery are a Cops world, the traits that ex-ist within the finest that we can be. Even among the best of us there will be error. When one does, among so many, to discredit the profession is indeed a gravely unfair and disproportion-ate reflection of sheer

Another year has come and gone, and as we count down to 2016 we wonder if this year will be any different from the last. Before we turn the page, there are a few questions we must ask. What have we learned? How have we changed? What can we improve? How can we prevent the things that went wrong from happen-ing again?
One thing that is always at the top of our list when we make our annual New Year’s Resolution is our health. Although we have good intentions, it always seems to get pushed aside by the end of the year. The quote “I no longer believe in New Year’s resolutions. I believe in daily resolutions” seems to fit perfectly here. If you’re really serious about making a change, why wait to make a New Year’s Resolution?
When we consider what we did in 2015 to stay healthy and fit we’re less than impressed with our commitment to follow through. Based on our performance we definitely won’t be nominated for any award and we sealed that deal when the holiday season rolled around. We needed neither that second serving nor the extra round of drinks. Yet we indulged. We planned on getting to the gym three to four days a week. We barely made it once. We planned on getting rid of the garbage in our cabinets and fridge. There’s more now than there was to begin with.

With our gym bags packed, our sweat towel in hand, and our sneak-ers laced up tightly, we solemnly swear that 2016 will be di�erent. This year, were going to make good on our resolutions. Just you wait and see.
Here are a few simple tips to help you get started on your journey to success:• Be Realistic. The surest way to fall short of your goal is to have unrealistic
expectations. This can make your goal hard to reach and unattainable. For in-stance, resolving to never eat ice cream again is just not realistic. Instead, strive for a goal that you can stick with, such as having ice cream once a week instead of every night.
• Make a commitment. Though you may have good intentions, sticking with a weight loss program is a lot of hard work. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You have to approach it as you would a job. It is your responsibility to show up, do the work, and give it your all.
• Don’t beat yourself up! Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Repeat after me: One minor slip-up does not mean your at-tempt to lose weight was a failure! Don’t judge your success on the basis of “one bad day” or “one bad meal.” Stay focused on the bigger picture.
• Keep a food journal. You’ve probably heard this a thousand times, but keep-ing a food journal is a vital part of staying motivated. If you don’t eat according
to your goals, you can’t expect to reach them! Instead of focusing on the end result, focus on losing a few pounds at a time.
• Be speci�c about your goals. Saying that you want to lose weight is way too vague. You need to set speci�c goals, such as “I want to lose ten pounds in six weeks” or “I want to run a mile in a month.”
• Have a plan. Say things like, “I’m going to take Spin Class three times a week” or “I am going to eat smaller portions at each meal.” When you establish a plan to reach your goal you will be more likely to hold yourself accountable.

I would say to the media when you are setting a tone, please recall that these are “American” Police you are reporting about. The Blue Line where evil stops and bravery enters, caring for the greatest land on earth. To so falsely blanket and cause fear or suspicion among the greatest people on earth, when our Cops are the finest of those very same people, is a dis-service of the highest order. Your children are watching. When you see something wrong don’t hang them all. Find the residing supervision and make clear the failure in their jurisdiction, while defending their charge with truth be told and maintained that this brave charge is made of American character and American courage and American Compassion and as such is the place of heroes as fine as they can be. These are not fancy words, but missing truths.

Remember the good-bad old day of dial-up Internet service? Your modem - connected to the phone line - dialed a particular number when invoked, you got that fun sound, and voila, the World Wide Web.
But then there was the not-so-fun cost of it all: you paid a fee for use, so you’d have to be careful how much time you spent online. America Online (AOL), in 1996, decided to go from an hourly fee to a set monthly fee (it was $19.95, if you care to know), and very quickly ran into issues with constant busy signals - why bother disconnecting (for hours and hours) if you’re not paying by the hour? Prior to that, you’d log on, do what you had to do, and get right off to contain your costs.
With the advent and proliferation of broadband, the set monthly fee and always on connection ceased to be a problem, and we’ve now come to expect to have our Internet services

whenever we want, at least within our homes and offices. We don’t even need to be tied to an ethernet cable anymore - home-based WiFi allows us to wander about the house, have multiple devices running simultaneously, and not fret about the cost.
But that doesn’t solve the problem of traveling. To a degree, there are solutions for this problem: use your data plan on your phone or tablet device is the primary one. But what if you have real work to do and want your laptop?
You can “tether” your laptop to your phone: your smart phone will have a set-ting for creating a personal hotspot. You turn this function on, and it will provide you with an access code. Turn on your computer, and go into the WiFi settings. It will detect your phone, and you enter the access code. Voila, again. As long

tor what is their usual layout of the room? Does it support your vision? If not, this is a great way to get cre-ative. Think about your priorities: is your cake a highlight? If so, you can’t tuck it away in a corner! Or your head table, do they put it in front of an immovable piece of awful art? Ask your coordinator what creative layout solutions they have, what are the options? What are the limita-tions? Also, ask what other spaces you can take advantage of: bridal lounge, cocktail hour, after hours, etc. Making the best of these additional spaces may help with your event timing, as well as support your event style.
Menu:Most venues already have a caterer.
But most caterers have chefs who love to be creative. Don’t be shy! Push their creativity and expertise to help custom-ize a menu and its presentation. Look at your style: fancy, casual, funky? Take menu risks that enhance your wed-ding’s personality.

It’s the beginning of the new year and the beginning of a new era in medicine as well. Listen I would love to spend the column remonstrating about your holiday excesses (and you know you are ) and urging you to not just start the year out with good intentions but to start each DAY with good intentions. You do know you don’t have to wait for a major change in the calendar to start work on the most important home improvement project...your health.
OK, let’s consider that sermon preached and move onto something new and very exciting at least for me. There is, finally, a FDA certified, reliable, reproducible test to evaluate your memory and cognition. With the Silver Tsunami of elders we’re all starting to wonder about their memory. Is your mom just getting older or is it the beginning of something serious? Is your wife just not paying attention anymore or is it her poor hearing that seems to have her repeating herself? Do you remember the name of that lady who you ran into in the dairy section by the time you have been through frozen foods? How do you separate the mild forgetfulness of aging from real dementia in its early stages? Finally we have a way.
So far we have used serial observations and some crude questions like “remember 3 words” and, “spell WORLD backwards” etc. The results could vary based on your attention, your concentration, etc. They provided only a crude measure of your mem-ory. As a geriatric specialist I can’t tell you how many clocks I have had patients draw! These tests can be helpful but are woefully imprecise and fluctuate from visit to visit. We diagnose and treat hypertension based on numbers...blood pressure numbers. We diagnose and treat diabetes based on numbers...sugar numbers. So to for choles-terol. Finally we have a way to quantify memory issues. We, at long last, have the fifth vital sign! (the first four being respirations, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse).

about this machine I said, “we have got to get this for our patients.” We can test people who think they might have a memory problem. We can test patients before and after memory meds to see if they really made a difference. We can test people before and after starting statins (the super popular cholesterol med very widely prescribed in Amer-ica which have been linked to memory loss as well as in-creased diabetes risk). We can test people before and after chemotherapy to assess for Chemo Brain Fog. The biggest potential use is to help differentiate people who have just a little memory loss associated with normal aging versus people who go on to have real trouble with dementia. We can use this test to tell patients if they should still drive based on their mental and physical response to the test.
We test every patient at their annual evaluation for their blood pressure, their weight, and even their hearing. We do crude testing of every Medicare patient’s memory but this offers us a far more reproducible and reliable mea-surement, that we can do over time, to tell who is slipping and how much. We can then use this knowledge to help the patients and their family make plans for the future. Should Momma still be driving? Should Momma still be living alone? Now I can take a test result and show a pa-tient something concrete that shows them where normal is and where they are. Powerful stuff... Now, I still don’t think we have very good medications for memory loss but this test will allow us to measure any actual improvement. We can finally tell whether or not they help any one individual patient.
Don’t bother asking your doctor about this test because he is too busy. I assume that your doctor got the same letter that I did introducing this device but with my Concierge program I have time to really look at these things, especially important things like memory, nutrition, exercise etc. that can have a meaningful and important impact on the lives of my patients. I have always been an early adopter if I felt it would make a difference to the lives of my patients somehow. This test is reliable and reproducible and covered by insurance and frankly, in the scale of things, pretty cheap compared to the information it can give you. It’s less than
$50 dollars to run the roughly 10 minute test which is covered by most insurance. If you are a member of my Signature MD concierge practice we will be discussing this test sometime this year. If you are a patient of Preventive Medicine Associates and you have any concerns about your memory just ask your provider and we can easily arrange this test.
I believe this machine and eventually others like it will become the standard of care in assessing and monitoring your cognitive status. It’s long overdue. If I of-fered this test to the general public I think I would be perceived as just looking for a revenue stream. It may be some time be-fore your doctor can study the literature and make their own decision regarding getting a device like this, but if you’re interested and have a question, or if you want to take the test, have your doctor or his staff call my office at 487-8109 and we will be happy to set something up. It doesn’t mean you have to become a patient in my office, change doctors etc. I am just happy to be able to provide a new and important service to the Central New York community.

What better way to start the New Year than with an Old Book about really Old Stuff that’s Politically Incorrect?
OK. Let’s start with the writer. He specializes in politically incorrect books - but, his C.V. reads much like another famous person’s, though not necessarily in the same or-der: B.A. Harvard, M.Phil. and PhD., Columbia. Oh, and he’s a libertarian, small l. Other than that, I can’t attest to his scholarship.
The book is a publication of sub-title of Random House, so, again, reasonable though not guaranteed scholarship.
And, full disclosure (I love that expression): I did not go through and check each item against other publications on the topic but merely read for amusement, enter-tainment, and inquiry.
Now, to continue that disclosure: I was not educated, in the formal sense, in the last 20 years. And I do think that makes a difference. A FB Friend mentioned that his dad had a habit of reciting a long and rhythmic poem, and that put me in mind of a man I knew who did the same. I realized they’d probably both been educated at

around the same time, when recita-tion was still done in some schools - kids were expected to learn a poem or reading “by heart” (what a wonder-ful way to put it!) and then stand and recite it in front of their appreciative elders, as kids today will... oh, never mind.
My point being, I grew up with a certain set of stories about American History - you know, like “In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” as opposed to “Columbus was an Oppressor from Europe who sailed to the New World bent upon the destruction of the Indigenous Peoples who had never done anybody any harm and were living in Eden.” OK, perhaps that’s over-stating the dichotomy, but you get the picture. What kids are taught in school has a lot to do with what is popular culturally - history be damned. And neither story is neces-sarily “correct.”
Every day, we re-interpret history; sometimes this is based upon new things that turn up (Kinnewick Man, for example), or upon a new way of “reading” things right before our eyes (is the Con-federate Flag the secret sign of slavery, or a symbol of a rebellion, or both - depend-ing upon who you are?).

It is not often that I use this column to delve into the world of television, but over the course of the past few years, the medium has advanced to the point where the quality is often equal to that of the cinematic would. This, for me, has been a difficult reality to face. I’ve always been a movie guy! Give me a film over a show any day. But, now, with some of the strongest talents in the entertainment world honing their craft on the small screen, combined with a virtually limitless array of platforms in which to deliver their product to the masses, there is no denying that we are in the midst of a revolution.
With a multitude of must-see series at your disposal, it is often difficult to choose one that may not have necessarily been on your radar. Occasionally, however, you stumble upon a body of work that begs to be seen, and once you’ve successfully binged, you can’t wait to spread the word. A mere few months ago, I had never heard of the Netflix original series BLOODLINE. It wasn’t until the world-renowned Eric Oddo called it “the best show no one is talking about” that I learned of its exis-tence, and immediately placed it at the top of my list. 13 intense and unforgettable episodes later, I wholeheartedly agreed with his spot-on assessment.
BLOODLINE tells the story of the Rayburns, a well-respected family who run a be-loved beach-side resort in the sweaty and sweltering Florida Keys. The entire Ray-

burn clan has come to-gether to celebrate a Pier dedication that is to take place to honor Robert (Sam Shephard) and Sally Rayburn (Sissy Spacek). For decades, their resort has been the heart and soul of their existence. While their daughter Meg (Linda Cardellini) and two of their sons, John (Kyle Chandler), and Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) have stayed local, their other boy, Danny (Ben Men-delsohn) is coming home for the first time in years. Though the audience knows very little about the background of any of these characters, we are lead to believe that Danny has a number of secretive demons that are waiting to burst forth and could possibly destroy the entire family.
There is little doubt that 58 minutes into the pilot episode, you will have already drawn some conclusions as to where you believe the plot is going, and who the antagonist is going to be. Then, the last 60 seconds unfold, and you suddenly realize that this tale is going to be far different than what you expected. A voice-over by John in these closing moments summarizes the ever-evolving plot succinctly; “We’re not bad people, but we did a bad thing.”
BLOODLINE succeeds on every conceivable level, and easily emerges as one of the best new shows of 2015. The Rayburn saga is told in a variety of time-bending ways, effectively toying with its with expert precision. As John’s voice-over in the pilot illustrated, the entire season is an exploration into a series of dark and unfath-omable events that have already happened. He vows to tell the whole truth, even if it paints his family in a negative light. We learn that every character has secrets of their own, and as the saga unfolds, these indiscretions are dragged out into the harsh Florida sunlight.
Each member of the cast is spectacular, and as the season progresses, this sentiment is proven time and again. As a fan of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, I thought it would be impossible to see Chandler as anyone other than Coach Taylor. By the time the first season of BLOODLINE reached its conclusion, I felt like he was John Rayburn. As a detective who finds that the steady grip he has on his own life slip-ping slowly through his fingers day by day, he desperately attempts to stand as the voice of reason in the muddied waters of the Rayburn’s lives. On the flip side, Mendelsohn is a marvel as the dysfunctional Danny. His journey is complex and perplexing, challenging viewers to draw conclusions and form opinions before suddenly turning them on their head. In one moment you’ll be certain that he is dubious and deplorable, and in the next, you’ll experience an unwavering sense of pity and sympathy. The brilliance of Mendelsohn is his ability to force the audience to struggle with these emotions in every scene that he is in.
The twists and turns of BLOODLINE range from subtle to shocking and by the time I had reached the halfway point of the season, a new obsession had been born. The look, feel, and structure of the saga is enthralling, and the setting in the Keys feels like an essential character in itself. The characters and the stories stay with you long after each episode has ended, and it’ll be fascinating to see where the Rayburns go from here. Netflix has yet to announce the release date of Season 2, but it already can’t come soon enough.

Ingredients: 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil3 cloves garlic, minced1/4 cup diced red bell pepper1 pinch red pepper flakes1 lb peeled and deveined large shrimp1 cup flour1 tomato, diced2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice2/3 cup dry white wine3 Tbsp butter1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley1 box linguine
Directions:1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat; cook and stir the garlic, bell pepper, and red pepper flakes in the oil about 20 minutes.
2. Cook linguine in separate pot following directions on box.
3. Dredge the shrimp in the flour to coat, then shake off excess.
4. Raise heat to medium-high and stir in the shrimp and tomato; cook until the shrimp is pink, about 3 to 5 minutes.
5. Add lemon juice, wine, and butter; continue cooking until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes more.
6. Serve over cooked linguine and garnish with parsley.

What fascinates me is the information that you either must dig for, or that appears based upon some scholar digging into original (source) material (a friend spent his graduate days in dusty volumes of Early Spanish, learning what people like Colum-bus were writing about their adventures at that time) and trying to make sense of it in the context of all the other material that has surfaced.
Then, there are writers, like Woods, who try to popularize this information - that is, make it “available” to both the intellect and the education of the average person. And do so, I believe, honestly.
For I do get the impression that Woods, while, as a libertarian-small-l, he may have a smallish axe to grind, he is intellectually honest. He seems to bat both ways, though, depending upon whose darling is being killed, he will seem to be on “the other side.”
I have a friend with whom I �ght the Civil War, endlessly. I have to admit to having lost as many battles as I have won, but what’s of great interest to me is that perhaps the people who were living in those times were as certainly-uncertain of why they were going to war as we who try to �gure it all out are today.
Woods deals with that in the question of Virginia’s State Constitution and Je�er-son’s idea of “state’s rights,” and whether this was, or was not, a de�ning issue of the Civil War. (See Chapter 19, and how and when and under what conditions Virginia agreed to ratify the U.S. Constitution.)
For each point of debate, you can read “The Myth” (the popular idea of the subject) and “The Truth” (or his reformation on the subject).
As I said, it’s important to read each subject with the necessary grain of salt - and do some research of your own. If he’d perhaps divided his chapters into “The Com-mon Story,” and “The Uncommon Story,” I would have felt less nervous about accept-ing the stories with which I agree with him, and dismissing the stories with which I disagree.
What’s fun is, the book will make you think. And the fact that it was published a few years ago (and I’m just getting around to it, which tells you a bit about my pile of reading!), because so much of the history is relatively old (heck, even Bill Clinton, whose presidency is one of the issues, is 20-odd years ago), the issues he raises, as they have not been settled yet, are unlikely to have been settled by the time you get to reading this book.
