MARKET OUTLOOK

Equity Markets Round Up: November 2018

• NovemberwasagoodmonthforEmergingMarkets(EMs)withtheMSCIEM(USD)indexup4.1%duringthemonth.TheMSCIWorld(USD)index,whichtracksdevelopedmarketswasup1%andunderperformedtheEMindex.ThiswasasharpturnaroundfromOctoberandwasledbyloweroilprices(down22%duringthemonth),dovishtalkfromtheUSFed(‘thebenchmark rate is just below neutral’) and expectations of a slower cycle of Fed tightening next year, pick up in US China tradetalksandstrongperformancetheEMcurrenciesvstheUSD.

• FlowsintoEMsasacategorypickedup.EMequityfundshadinflowsofUSD6.3Billion(JPMorgandata).AsfarasIndiawasconcerned,afterthelargeoutflowsinOctober,FPIinflowswerepositiveatRs.5,981crores.

• Among sectors, capital goods,financials and autosdidwellwhilemetals, healthcare and ITdid relatively poorly. IT andhealthcarewerebothimpactedbythestrongercurrency.ITwasalsoimpactedbytheconcernsonglobalgrowth,visaissuesandrisingcostsaswehadmentioned inthe lastmonth. Financialsdidwell.BothNBFCsandbanksdidwellduringthemonth.TheRBI,aftertheBoardmeetingdecidedtoextendtheCapitalConservationbufferof0.625%forbanksbyoneyeartoMarch2020andagreedtoreviewthePCAframeworkforbanks.AcommitteewillalsoexaminetheEconomicCapitalframeworkoftheRBI.TheNBFCshavebeenfacingliquidityissues.Theywerehelpedbybanksbuyingoutloanpoolsfromthem.Bankshoweverarebeingselectiveaboutextendingcredittothemasyet.Banksthemselvessawanimprovementintheir performance as Q2 results showed much lower slippages, increased NPA coverage, an improving pricing environment andconsequent likely improvement inNIMs.The slippagesweremostly fromthewatchlistwhichthebankshadearlierdeclared.WhilethePSUbanksalsosaw lowerslippages,someofthemdidreporthigherstress intheiragriculturalandMSME loan book

Equity Market Outlook

• WhilelowercrudepriceshaveimprovedthemacroenvironmentfortheIndianeconomy,therearestillchallengesonthefiscalandthedemandside.Intheshortterm,thetightfinancialconditionsforNBFCscouldimpactdemandforconsumerdurables.EconomistexpectslowerGDPgrowthrateinH2,FY19.Onthefiscalside,GSTreceiptshavebeenrunningcloseto(orslightlybelow)Rs.100,000crorespermonthwhicharebelowbudgetednumbers.ThiscouldleadtoslowergovernmentspendinginH2,whichisquiteimportant,consideringthatgrowthinpublicadministration(governmentspending)was10.9%whichsupportedGDPgrowth.

• IfweseeonlymoderatetighteninginfinancialconditionsintheUSin2019,itwouldbepositiveforEMsandhelpincapitalflows.While intheneartermthemarketsareexpectedtobevolatileastheytrack localandglobalnewsflow,cheapervaluationsandimprovementinearningsareexpectedtobepositiveforequityfromamediumtolongtermperspective.

• However,overthemediumterm,increasedcapitalspendingandconsumerdemandshouldbethegrowthdrivers.

Fund Manager - An employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the scheme.Heisusuallypartofalargerteamoffundmanagersandresearchanalysts.

Application Amount For Fresh Subscription -Thisistheminimuminvestmentamountforanewinvestorinamutualfundscheme.

Minimum Additional Amount -Thisistheminimuminvestmentamountforanexistinginvestorinamutualfundscheme.

Yield To Maturity -TheYieldtoMaturityortheYTMistherateofreturnanticipatedonabondifhelduntilmaturity.YTMisexpressedasanannualrate.TheYTMfactorsinthebond’scurrentmarketprice,parvalue,couponinterestrateandtimetomaturity.

SIP -SIPorsystematicinvestmentplanworksontheprincipleofmakingperiodicinvestmentsofafixedsum.Itworkssimilartoarecurringbankdeposit.Forinstance,aninvestormayoptforanSlPthatinvests` 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.

NAV -TheNAVorthenetassetvalueisthetotalassetvalueperunitofthemutualfundafterdeductingallrelatedandpermissibleexpenses.TheNAViscalculatedattheendofeverybusinessday.Itisthevalueatwhichtheinvestorentersorexitsthemutualfund.

Benchmark - A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment performance ofmutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-YearG-sec.

Standard Deviation -Standarddeviationisastatisticalmeasureoftherangeofaninvestment’sperformance.Whenamutualfundhasahighstandarddeviation,itsmeansitsrangeofperformanceiswide,implyinggreatervolatility.

Sharpe Ratio -TheSharpeRatio, namedafter its founder, theNobel LaureateWilliamSharpe, is ameasureof risk-adjusted returns. It iscalculatedusingstandarddeviationandexcessreturntodeterminerewardperunitofrisk.

Beta -Betaisameasureofaninvestment’svolatilityvis-a-visthemarket.Betaoflessthan1meansthatthesecuritywillbelessvolatilethanthemarket.Abetaofgreaterthan1impliesthatthesecurity’spricewillbemorevolatilethanthemarket.

AUM - AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund oranyinvestmentfirm.

Holdings -Theholdingsortheportfolioisamutualfund’slatestorupdatedreportedstatementofinvestments/securities.Theseareusuallydisplayedintermsofpercentagetonetassetsortherupeevalueorboth.Theobjectiveistogiveinvestorsanideaofwheretheirmoneyisbeinginvestedbythefundmanager.

Nature Of Scheme -Theinvestmentobjectiveandunderlyinginvestmentsdeterminethenatureofthemutualfundscheme.Forinstance,amutualfundthataimsatgeneratingcapitalappreciationbyinvestinginstockmarketsisanequityfundorgrowthfund.Likewise,amutualfundthataimsatcapitalpreservationbyinvestingindebtmarketsisadebtfundorincomefund.Eachofthesecategoriesmayhavesub-categories.

Rating Profile -Mutualfundsinvestinsecuritiesafterevaluatingtheircreditworthinessasdisclosedbytheratings.Adepictionofthemutualfundinvariousinvestmentsbasedontheirratingsbecomestheratingprofileofthefund.Typically,thisisafeatureofdebtfunds.
