Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension, On Wednesday, we celebrate the 4th of July. On that day we celebrate our independence as a nation - the birth of the USA. At baptism we were anointed to be priest, prophet and king. Every baptized Catholic is called to take on a prophetic role. What is the role of the prophet? A prophet is called to say something about the future, speak for God and communicate God’s will. A prophet is expected to teach us about the stand we should take towards the poor, the widow, the orphan, the immigrants, the unloved, the unwanted and the unborn. Our prophetic voice is more important now than ever before. As of the writing of this letter (June 21st), there are still more than 2,000 children separated from their parents. The Executive Order that was signed on June 20th, does not provide for reuniting families; the administration, in conjunction with the Homeland Security Secretary, did not have a plan to reunite the families. Health and Human Services has sent over 2,300 children all over the USA. The separating of children from their parents is unequivocally immoral, unjust, and un-Christian . . . it is wrong and evil in every way. We need to listen to the Lord and use our voices prophetically. There is much we can do to voice our concern and express our utter dismay and disagreement with all that is taking place. Some of the things you may consider doing are: Pray – Our 11a.m., 12:30 and 6p.m. Masses on Sundays, July 1 and July 8 are being offered for “Immigrant Families Ripped Apart” Contact Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Congressional Rep. Nadler. Contribute to Legal and Social Support Services (see list on bulletin insert) Call or Email to Pres. Trump - his Executive Order just ended the horrific policy of taking children from families. It does not promise to reunite the families. He must order a systematic search of all the detention centers to match parents and children and reunite families. Insist that he do so. Prophets are called to love their country and have a genuine, deep seeded concern for the well-being of their country. Indeed we are a country of laws. We need to do all we can, however, to make sure that our laws are just, formed according to divine law. Perhaps the most difficult part of our prophetic role is to serve by our conscience. Our conscience is formed by our faith and love of country. Our nation has been built on religious freedom and religious beliefs. We have been endowed with certain inalienable rights - the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is the very reason that so many people have come to this country from other lands, they have come here for better economic conditions yes, but also and primarily, to live freely with these inalienable rights. We must together be a prophetic voice for these children and their parents. Peace, Fr. Kearney .

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

El miércoles celebramos el 4 de julio. En ese día celebramos nuestra independencia como nación – el nacimiento de los Estados Unidos de América.

En el bautismo fuimos ungidos para ser sacerdote, profeta y rey. Cada católico bautizado está llamado a tomar un rol profético. ¿Cuál es el rol del profeta? Un profeta está llamado a decir algo acerca del futuro, hablar en nombre de Dios y comunicar la voluntad de Dios. Un profeta está supuesto enseñarnos la posición que debemos tomar acerca de los pobres, la viuda, el huérfano, los inmigrantes, el no amado, el no deseado y el no nacido. Nuestra voz profética es más importante ahora que nunca. Mientras esta carta era escrita (21 de junio), todavía hay más de 2,000 niños separados de sus padres. La orden ejecutiva que fue firmada el 20 de junio no provee unir a familias; la administración, en conjunto con la Secretaria del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, no tenía un plan para reunir a las familias. El Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos ha enviado a más de 2,300 niños a través de todos los Estados Unidos. La separación de niños de sus padres es inequívocamente inmoral, injusto y anti-cristiano…es incorrecto y mal en todo sentido.

Necesitamos escuchar al Señor y usar nuestras voces proféticamente. Hay mucho que podemos hacer para expresar nuestra preocupación y total consternación y desacuerdo con todo lo que está ocurriendo. Algunas de las cosas que podría considerar hacer son:

Orar – Nuestras misas de 11 de la mañana, 12:30 de la tarde y 6 de la noche los domingos, 1ro de julio y 8 de julio serán ofrecidas por “Familias Inmigrantes Desgarradas.” Contacte a los senadores Schumer y Gillibrand y al Congresista Nadler.. Contribuya a servicios legales y servicios de soporte social (ver la lista en el inserto del boletín).

Llame o envíe un correo electrónico al Presidente Trump – su orden ejecutiva solo puso fin a la política horrible de separar a niños de sus familias. No promete reunir a las familias. Él debe ordenar un registro sistemático de todos los centros de detención para reunir a padres con hijos y reunir familias. Insista en que lo haga.

Los profetas están llamados a amar a su país y tener una legítima y profundamente arraigada preocupación por el bienestar de su país. Verdaderamente somos un país de leyes, sin embargo, tenemos que hacer todo lo que podamos para estar seguros de que nuestras leyes sean justas, formadas de acuerdo con la ley divina.

Quizás la parte más difícil de nuestro rol profético es servir de acuerdo con nuestra consciencia. Nuestra consciencia está formada por nuestra fe y amor por nuestra patria. Nuestra nación ha sido construida sobre la libertad de creencias y creencias religiosas. Hemos sido dotados con ciertos derechos inalienables – el derecho a la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad. Ésta es la verdadera razón por la cual tanta gente ha venido a este país de tantas otras tierras, han venido aquí por mejores condiciones económicas sí, pero también y primordialmente para vivir libremente con estos derechos inalienables.

Tenemos que ser juntos una voz profética para estos niños y sus padres.

SIX YEAR PARISH/PASTOR EVALUATION/

EVALUACION DE LA PARROQUIA/PASTOR Every six years, each parish/pastor of the Archdiocese of New York has an evaluation. A pastor is assigned to a parish for a six year term. Typically the pastor is then given a second year term. This has been an evaluation year for Ascension Parish and for Fr. Kearney. More than 40 people wrote letters as part of this evaluation process. This past week, Cardinal Dolan reappointed Fr. Kearney to a second six year term.

CONGRATULATIONS FATHER KEARNEY!

Cada seis años, cada parroquia / pastor de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York tiene una evaluación. Un pastor es asignado a una parroquia por un período de seis años. Normalmente, al pastor se le otorga un segundo término (de seis) años. Este ha sido un año de evaluación para la Ascensión y para el Pa-dre Kearney. Más de 40 personas escribieron cartas como parte de este proceso de evaluación. La semana pasada, el Cardenal Dolan volvió a nombrar al Padre Kearney por un segundo termino del otro seis años.
