Time seems to really fly. It is already coming to the end of 2011. I keep feeling that the earth is revolving faster around the sun! I am sure I am not the only one who feels that way. I did a Google search on that subject and in the Yahoo site someone had posted this answer: “It has to do with a concept formerly known as Time-lapse-redundancy. Apparently, the more you age the faster things appear almost, in a asymptotic time gain which perforates over time.” That it all boils down to me getting older isn’t really the answer I was expecting!

Technology seems to be progressing in an equally rapid pace as well. That is great and all but some times it feels that technology is well ahead of the needs of the consumers. I remember just a few years back we were all very pleased with LCD and Plasma screens and HD but now it is about LED and 3D. I bring this subject up because of some very exciting prototype developments happening right here in Singapore. On 9th November the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore officially opened the BeingThere Centre.

The S$23 million centre is set to drive the next evolution in virtual communications, as it focuses on developing a variety of interdisciplinary and advanced technologies that break down physical barriers, generating real, face-to-face conversation. The BeingThere Centre is a transnational effort spearheaded by NTU, Singapore, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill, USA), as well as the Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore.

Here are a couple of prototype solutions they are showing at the centre:

Animatronic avatar: If you’re not able to attend that meeting or orientation tour of a new retail store in the USA, you can soon send your avatar that can mimic – in real-time – your head pose, eye contact, and even your facial expressions. It captures and maps your dynamic motion and appearance onto a humanoid animatronic avatar. This enables you to project a real-time representation of yourself to the people you’re talking to at a remote location distances away, as if you are really there. And in the near future, you will even be able to move them around, as researchers work on mounting the avatar on a mobility platform.

Room-based Telepresence System: Want to find out what your colleagues are up to at your global HQ’s watering hole halfway around the world? A research prototype allows you to look through a glass window using 3-D glasses and chat with them in real-time. As you move around, your perspective of the room changes, depending on where you are standing. This room-based telepresence system will in future provide real-time 3D interactions with others thousands of kilometres away, with all parties feeling as if they are in one common room. With the aid of depth cameras and stereoscopic 3-D screens, these telepresence rooms share glass displays that give the illusion that the distant rooms are adjacent, separated only by glass.

Wow! They may not be practical for the man-in-the-street to use but the potential forthe government and corporate sectors is immense.

To all our readers who celebrate Christmas have a very merry one and we at Spinworkz would also like to wish one and all a very memorable and pleasant 2012 and may you have a great start to the year!

Start with the screen. When you choose a dnp optical projection screen you

get double the brightness and up to seven times the contrast compared with

standard white projection screens.

All this extra performance means you can use smaller, less expensive projectors.

Projector running costs for power and replacement lamps go down by 25%.

And since dnp screens maintain outstanding performance in ambient light, you

save on darkening equipment too.

Available in any size, dnp optical projection screens are ideal for presentation

suites, home entertainment systems, advertising signage, control rooms and

religious venues.

Mitsubishi Electric and Peace Myanmar Electric jointly participate in Myanmar International ICT Exhibition 2011

MYANMAR: The official opening ceremony by Myanmar Chief Minister of Yangon, U Myint Swe, marked the start of the Myanmar International ICT Exhibition 2011 that lasted from 20th to 23th October 2011 at Tatmadaw Exhibition Hall. The exhibition was attended by many overseas and local visitors and there were about 40 exhibiting companies. The guests and visitors who attended the grand opening ceremony were warmly welcomed by the Chief Minister. Various distinguished guests also gave their welcome speeches followed by stage performances and cultural dance entertainment. The Chief Minister made his tour around the exhibition hall after the performances.

Mitsubishi Electric Asia Pte Ltd (MEAP) and their new Myanmar distributor, Peace Myanmar Electric Co., Ltd (PME) had a joint-booth at the exhibition. Their booth was strategically located at the front of the stage and it was the largest booth among all. The Executive Director of PME, Khin Maung Myat conducted a product presentation to the Chief Minister at the booth. With just two days for booth construction and product set-up, MEAP and PME efficiently completed the booth structure that measured 6 m x 15 m. Nine product stations were set-up to demonstrate the product applications and business solutions of Mitsubishi Electric’s Visual & Imaging products.

The booth featured a number of interesting products including Mitsubishi Electric’s 2x2, 55 inch Super Narrow Bezel LCD with LED back light (4 units of VS-L55HM70U). The large display wall bezel was so slim that the gap between

the panels was only 5.7 mm apart. These products are meant for control and command applications and maintenance can be done from the front without any space required behind the panels. They are equipped with advanced CSC circuit and are able to communicate their operating perimeter with one another and maintain uniform brightness, contrast and color tone throughout their operational life. Also on display were the various industrial grade of Public Display LCD monitors that accept both video and data signals. A range of demonstrations was conducted to show the business solutions of public display applications, from digital signage to portrait layout monitor.

On a lighter note, Mitsubishi Electric had the entertaining 3D Home Cinema Projector (HC9000D) that produces 3D images with the most realistic feel. The awesome projector attracted endless number of visitors entering the home cinema dark-room. To ensure everyone had a chance to experience the 3D projector, organized crowd control measurement was carried out. The other “crowd-stopper” station was the XD600U projector which was set-up to demonstrate its rear projection capability. Many visitors stopped by to witness the clear and sharp projection, despite the exhibition hall’s bright lighting. Mitsubishi Electric’s range of products had definitely attracted many visitors at the exhibition, including the Yangon Chief Minister. He stopped by at MEAP and PME joint-booth to receive the photographs taken during the opening ceremony. The photographs were printed within minutes using Mitsubishi Electric’s photo printer.

The four days of exhibition saw a constant flow of visitors who explored the latest products and gadgets available. Some of them were businessmen and buyers who were looking out for interesting products to buy and distribute.

With the changes in Myanmar political climate, the business opportunities in Myanmar look positive for both local businessmen and foreign investors. It is certainly an ASEAN country worth exploring.

“We have been listening to customers’ needs to design projectors like the new Epson EB-S, X and W series,” said Tan May Lin, General Manager, Epson Singapore. “That is why we are confident that among our wide range of new models, every customer will find one that is perfect for their unique needs and budget.”

The EB-S/X/W series are Epson’s most affordable, entry-level range of projectors for the education and business segments. This allows for projection of bright and clear images even in high ambient light conditions. Selected models also offer advanced features including HDMI and USB connectivity, and the only Horizontal Keystone Adjuster of any projector in their class. Sony introduces World’s First True 4K Projector for High-end Home

SINGAPORE: Sony is once again ahead of the curve by going beyond HD, to offer theatre quality 4K for the home with the world’s first true 4K home theatre projector. The 3D-capable digital projector can display stunning 4K images that provide home entertainment enthusiasts with a more immersive, engaging visual experience with over four times the resolution of Full HD.

Home theatre enthusiasts will be blown away by Sony’s flagship VPL-VW1000ES which employs an entirely new SXRD 4K panel, producing outstanding device contrast and 2,000 ANSI-lumens of brightness. When combined with Sony’s Iris3 technology, the projector can achieve an incredible 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast. Featuring such incredible resolutions, it can produce

screen sizes of up to 200-inches (diagonally) for awe-inspiring cinematic viewing in the comforts of the home.

“In similar fashion to our industry-leading Sony Digital CinemaTM 4K projectors which has swept across cinemas around the world with over 10,000 units installed, our new VPL-VW1000ES 4K home theatre projector has been created to not just meet, but exceed the needs of the most discerning and demanding home entertainment enthusiasts. It will allow them to become totally immersed in the viewing experience with the action unfolding before their eyes in a new level of realism, with colours and details unlike anything seen before in home entertainment,” said Tsuyoshi Nagata, General Manager for Presentation Display, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific.

In addition to supporting 4K native resolution, the VPL-VW1000ES projector also features Sony’s exclusive Super Resolution 4K upscaler “Reality Creation” that enhances all content – SD or HD, 2D or 3D – to higher definition true 4K (DCI Format: 4096 x 2160p) picture signals.

“Sony continues to push the boundaries of high resolution entertainment; from the lens to the living room,” adds Nagata.

For greater versatility, it has a built-in IR transmitter for Full 4K 3D which drives the projector’s TDG-PJ1 USB-chargeable active shutter 3D glasses; picture position memory which memorises the position of the zoom lens; and it also supports 2D and 3D anamorphic films. Since 2003, Sony has continued to improve and develop its proprietary SXRD panels resulting in pixels being reduced from 7μm to 4μm, as well as the reduction of the space between each pixel, for even distribution and accurate light reflection.

The VPL-VW1000ES offers a variety of installation options, including dual triggers, a 2.1 motorised zoom, expanded throw distances, an RS232 interface, control over IP and compatibility with virtually every home automation integrator. Sony’s new VPL-VW1000ES 4K home theatre projector will be available in Singapore through accredited dealers in March 2012.

“‘Sony Digital Cinema™ 4K’ is today’s sharpest digital projection system that gives everyone a truly different cinema experience. SF is the first cinema in Thailand to have brought this innovation, similar to the systems already available in the USA and Japan, to Thai movie-goers. The launch clearly reflects our determination in offering the best entertainment experience to Thai movie-goers,” added Suvit Thongrompo.

The implementation of Sony’s 4K digital cinema solutions at the SF Cinema adds to the 10,000 units of Sony 4K systems installed worldwide. “4K is the future of cinema and it is here today, sweeping across major cinemas around the world and now in Thailand as well. As the

leading manufacturer of 4K resolution digital cinema projectors and the only manufacturer to provide a complete end-to-end cinema digital solution to exhibitors; 4K digital technology from Sony is leading the digital cinema revolution,” said Kozo Tetsuya, Managing Director of Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific.

Not only the cooperation in the improvement of projection system technology was established, but through Sony PCL Inc., part of the Sony Group, SF is opening up new entertainment experiences such as Alternative Content which will offer interesting live shows at the cinema. With the power of seamless projection system and audio quality, movie-goers will enjoy a full flavour of excitement the same way as if they are at the show themselves.

The latest projection “AKB48 The 24th Single Janken Tournament” was streamed live from Japan at SF World Cinema, broadcasting simultaneously in four other Asian countries. The show was a real success and received positive feedback from a large number of customers. The ideology “More Than a Cinema” is hence fulfilled and more Alternative Content are set to come to Thai movie-goers with the cooperation with Sony.

AMX Asia holds “Reaching the Summit 2011” Partner Conference in Lijiang, ChinaCHINA: More than 100 AMX consultants, partners and sales distributors from regions such as China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau met in Lijiang, China to participate in the annual AMX Partner Conference. A team of AMX executives were also in attendance: AMX Corporate was represented by Niclas Brattberg, Shaun Robinson, Rick Wise and Paul Lee. AMX Asia was represented by Chris Yang, Peter Low, Henry Yip, Roc Cui, and Rambo Tang. The event was a key indication that AMX is committed to making the Asia market a successful region. It also demonstrated through attendance the fact that AMX brand awareness is increasing in the region.

The focus of the conference was to highlight AMX’s recent global successes, discuss future trends in the AV & IT markets, introduce the new AMX products that were announced earlier this year, and to define ways to better serve the supply chain as a whole with quality after-sales services and assistance.

Chris Yang, AMX Asia general manager, was the first to address the audience. He thanked all for their participation and attendance and offered his gratitude to all regional partners for their continued support of AMX.

It was clear that the participating partners and sales distributors represent companies with a strong foothold in local AV system sales, design, and integration. These companies not only have far reaching sales network in all areas of North Asia, but also have strong capabilities in terms of marketing programs, technical support, and after-sales services.

Niclas Brattberg, vice president of International Market Development for AMX, shared the fact that AMX ranks quite high around the world in terms of products and technology. He also said that armed with a capable and active

network of agents and distributors AMX can gain the full confidence of regional customers on AMX products, technology, and servicing capabilities, Brattberg said that AMX has more than 6,000 products, enabling the company to secure even better sales success in the future. But, this will be dependent upon even more collective strength. Brattberg hoped the manufacturers and agents would continue to maintain good channels of communication by saying, “AMX has an extremely strong team of technical support, and I hope that everybody can use the same spirit of mutual help and assistance that was shown when the group climbed the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. This is how we obtain more projects in the future, and achieve even higher results in 2012.” AMX Asia Sales Director Peter Low shared main market development trends in 2011 and for the future. He said that in the area of AV technology, the transfer from analog to digital was a certain trend and reality. O v e r the last couple of years, the

digitalization of professional AV equipment has been faster and more in depth, with even greater integration of AV and IT (IP). In the future, practically all video, audio, and control systems would be related to IT (IP), and network content would be mainly visual with most items operating through a network or the cloud. Within the next five years, video content will claim more than 90 percent of network traffic, making AV the most mainstream content on networks.

The transition from AV to network platforms will be the next largest trend. There will be universal networking for PC’s and laptop computers, and use of the next generation of smartphones and tablets will become a part of everyday life for the general population. Not only do mobile PC-style, IT (IP) AD, and android type smartphones have video content, they are also able to connect to the Internet at any time, and access any information required from virtual networks and cloud applications, etc. IT (IP) has already become the primary network framework. “Unrestricted computer usage” is already fast becoming the standard, and professional AV performance is already becoming “unrestricted AV”. Increasing numbers of cloud-based solutions that create greater flexibility and lessen limitations are appealing to more and more customers and suppliers, and AV is expected to also enter the realm of “cloud computing” making it as convenient as communications networks. The future management of resources is a key challenge, and AMX fully supports sustainable “green” economies.

Peter stressed that not only will the professional AV market not disappear, but in fact it is becoming more mainstream on a daily basis, attracting increasing amounts of competitors into the market. Moving forward, sales and marketing agents will be more important than ever, and will need to adapt to the new marketplace. The future of AV and IT (IP) will be fully integrated, and the world of AV needs to actively seek friendships within IT. The complexity and integration of AV will increase, and circuit system manufacturers will need to make further technical advances in response. There

will be higher requirements for “green” savings, offering even more opportunities to circuit system manufacturers and sales distributors, and the notion of central control systems should spread far and wide from this meeting room out to all types of construction, parks and commercial project applications. Mutual integration of AV and IT will require mutual understanding and mutual understanding will form the basis of future success. AMX will organically combine integrated controls with mutual operability, bringing the greatest value to customers.

The Enova DGX-16/32 digital media switcher is HDMI/HDCP compatible with port to port HDMI signal distribution. InstaGate PRO technology means no signal disconnection or disturbance; they can transmit analog, digital and IP AV frequency via Cat5 so that just one box is able to transmit any type of signal source.

The DXLink TX/RX digital media series cable transmitters/receivers use SmartScale technology to automatically ensure scaled transmission of signals to fit the resolution of each display. Using NetLinx control, they support traditional analog signals and digital signals including HDMI/HDCP. They are available in various wall-mount style formats.

AMX China Engineers Roc Cui and Rambo Tang presented the new products that were introduced by AMX earlier this year, including the Enova DGX and the Enova DVX, HPX, ICS Lan, the Modero X Series touch panels, and RPM.

The Enova DGX-3150HD all-in-one presentation switcher is a 3RU 10×4 matrix enclosure that includes a controller, an AV switcher/distributor, picture definition formatter, transformer, digitalizer, amplifier, built-in professional DSP AV mixer and Cat5 transmission.

The new Modero X Series touch panels truly reflect human engineering and design, providing a total user experience. They were designed using seamless glass combined with a PanTastic ultra-wide user interface, giving the end user the ultimate experience in touch panel control from any angle.

During the Q&A session, the participants entered into detailed and in depth discussions with AMX staff. The topics discussed were comprehensive relating to matters of new products, new technology, sales, after-sales services purchasing, etc.

The day before the conference, on October 20, AMX organized a group event which included climbing up the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain which was in line with the conference theme, “Reaching the Summit 2011”. On that day, there was heavy snowfall on the mountain top but this did not impede the group from successfully reaching the mountain top - if anything, it further added to their enthusiasm and resolution. Faced with their challenge, the group bravely persevered and during their ascent to the 4,636 meters above sea level summit, they helped and cheered each other on as they chanted the words to a song referring to their vision to work together and reach new heights for AMX.

ABtUS gears up for ISE 2012

AbtUS will be launching a couple of solutions at ISE 2012. These include the following:

ABtUS introduces classroom AV solution for the modern educator: ABtUS have been serving the Education industry for over 2 decades now. Over the years while serving numerous established educational institutes, ABtUS consultants realized that even the more established educators do not necessarily know what are the equipment needed in effective classroom.

For ISE 2012, ABtUS has designed a simple, all inclusive package which is ideal for any classroom to help educators create a modern multimedia classroom. Several options will be available for users to select that better suit their classroom applications. All the products are specially designed and produced by ABtUS to work perfectly together. The package is particularly put together for

quick, hassle-free installation that makes perfect economical sense.

The main attention-drawer in the package is the centralize control panel that can consolidate and allow simple one-touch controls; all in one panel. Regardless of the settings of the classroom, the options available in the package would be able to provide customized solutions for each requirement. From short throw projection to traditional ceiling mount, from dual screens to interactive screens or IWB, this ABtUS package will no doubt help integrate and improve multimedia technology for the benefit of both educators and students.

It’s a perfect solution for any classroom.

ABtUS to unveil innovative range of fiber optics extenders: ABtUS Singapore will continue their determined efforts to introduce revolutionary new products by presenting their latest product range of fiber optics extenders, the OPT-HDX11 series.

Similar to the ABtUS HDMI over CAT-5 extenders, the new range of fiber optics extenders offer a greater distance of extension than what is generally

available in the market at present. It is able to extend Full HD 1080p source over a whopping 650m (over 2,000 ft), a distance uncommonly seen in the market for the flexible and economical plastic fiber.

Full HD 1080p signal can be displayed at the destination with no delays. The physical properties of the fiber optics also help prevent any EMI/RFI disturbance, lightning and pressure extremes which would severely affect copper cables. The ABtUS fiber optics extenders also come with IR, keyboard, mouse and RS-232 control pass-through. Also, it retains the all useful feature of the local monitor output at the transmitter to make life much simpler for its users. Extremely easy installation, no training is required.

This range of digital fiber optics extenders really hit the spot with its innovative functions and exceptional extension length. This breakthrough clearly shows what ABtUS is capable of and that we can expect more “world’s first” innovations from them in time to come.

“Plastic fiber is far more flexible and can bend more than glass fiber; it is thus much easier to install. The installation and connection are less stringent than glass fiber. It is a more suitable medium for last minute staging over long distances, for example a stadium, where fast installation becomes a critical success factor,” says Delson Goh, Sales Director, ABtUS Singapore.

“One of the real user benefits lies in the deployment of our newly developed dual bandwidth imaging”, says Anders Løkke, Marketing Director at projectiondesign. “With double the image processing speed of competing products, we are able to display pictures that do not rely on compression technologies, thus outputting full image detail and accuracy without artefacts.”

Particularly useful for scientific visualization, virtual reality, visitor attraction and training and simulation applications, these higher detail levels allow users to make quicker and better-informed decisions, saving them both time and money.

The F35 AS3D is based on the already popular F35 wqxga model – the highest resolution DLP projector available for commercial use. Roger Carver, manager of DLP’s front projection business at Texas Instruments, developers of the DLP imaging platform, comments: “The F35 wqxga was a stunning technological achievement – now the F35 AS3D version takes this innovation to a new level of image detail. We are proud to be associated with such ground-breaking engineering by a manufacturer that is consistently pushing the boundaries of industry imaging standards and excellence.”

The F35 AS3D features a wide range of specifically designed high resolution projection lenses and incorporates projectiondesign’s unique RealColor™ colour management suite for perfect on-site calibration and unmatched colour accuracy. Natural and precise colours add to the high-resolution performance of the F35 AS3D, and image quality can be guaranteed over any number of projection channels.

The projector offers brightness levels up to 7,500 ANSI lumens, a range of configuration options, and seamless switching between 3D and 2D. Additional benefits include user adjustable Smear Reduction Processing that reduces motion artefacts in high-speed imaging – yet another key feature for simulation applications.

As with all projectiondesign professional projectors, the F35 AS3D benefits from up to five years of full 24/7 warranty availability and is incorporated into the company’s ProNet asset management software suite.

KLOTZ ‘s new special speaker cable LSB4160P has an extra-large conductor cross-section (4 x 16mm² ) to minimize line loss when controlling PA systems. An ultra-dense braided screen with 85% coverage provides for interference-free operation, particularly in transmission over long distances. The dual-layer cable jacket comprises a flexible PVC inner layer bonded to an outer PUR jacket.

Thanks to this PUR jacket, with its high resistance to abrasion, hydrolysis, microbes and UV rays, the cable is ideal for open-air use. In addition, the ultra-fine individual strands of the conductors (exceeding IEC 60228, Class 5) maintain the high flexibility of the cable to facilitate installation. These fine-stranded conductors also ensure durable and breakproof connections even under vibrations. The cable can also be supplied with a conductor cross-section of 2 x 16mm² or 4 x 10mm² und 2 x 10mm². Thanks to these characteristics, the new speaker cable is particularly suitable for use in football stadiums, sports and event venues and for all outdoor facilities with permanently installed PA systems. www.klotz-ais.com

37Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 EXHIBITION REVIEW

InfoComm MEA shows the way aheadby Bhavanashi Ramakrishna

The inaugural event of InfoComm for the Middle East and African AVSI markets – InfoComm MEA – organized as part of the GITEX 2011 from 9-13 October at the Dubai World Trade Centre can be considered successful in that it made its pitch felt by the market movers. Though comparatively smaller in scale than the hugely popular GITEX show, with only around 50 exhibitors and confined to a corner of the expansive Hall 7 & 8, the five-day tradeshow had most of its major stakeholders and many from the Middle East region. Major exhibitors at the show included AMX, Analogway,

beyerdynamaic, Christie, Crestron, Dataton, DIS, Extron, Jupitar, Mindstec, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Pan Intellicom, RGB Spectrum, RTI, Sennhieser, Sharp, Sony, TC Electronics and Venuetech. Besides, the show also had regional players seeking continental fortunes, like ABtUS Singapore, Beijing Kensense Technology, Comm Products, Elvis Technology, Oasis Enterprises, Sabine, Sapling, Visix Technologies and Zio Technologies.

InfoComm Academy, the concurrent programme at the event focused

on disseminating knowledge and ideas through technical sessions and seminars, had a multitude of sessions with some of the most topical issues and concepts that AV professionals and buyers generally tend to struggle to understand. Organized on four days from 10-13 October in three halls simultaneously, the subjects spanned across 3D projection technology to new ANSI standard to digital video dynamics and the pervading concept of AV and IT convergence to Cloud computing to practical approach to AV design in digital domain.

While most exhibitors were happy about the overall turnout of the event, most insisted that InfoComm stands to do a better show if it did so independently and on a shorter scale of three days. While five days felt too stretchy for most, that the show had several limitations owing to the GITEX stipulations.

Comparatively thin turn out of attendees at some of the academic sessions indicated the structure of the programme needed a rethinking, or some aggressive sensitization.

The event, however, brought several products and technology solutions to forth, some being entirely new for the global markets, and some as a reinforcement of existing and running products and systems. It appeared like the show had a heavy inclination towards e-learning and interactive academic solutions.

ABtUS introduces two new products to MEA marketsABtUS Singapore Pte Ltd from Singapore specializing in integrated and customized AV solutions, introduced two exciting products to the MEA markets- the CAT-HDX 11MT/A-1 and the AVS-SCLHD1002T/AP1.

The CAT-HDX 11MT/A-1 extends lossless 1080p signal over 100 meters through a single CAT-5e cable. It also extends keyboard, mouse, IR & RS-232 controls. Power-over-LAN allows both the transmitter and receiver to power up with only one adopter at either end. The unique feature of the CAT-HDX11MT/A-1 is it has built-in local HDMI output which can duplicate the signal directly at the source, without any additional equipment.

Another new launch is the AVS-SCLHD1002T/AP1, a 10:4 matrix scaler/switcher with selectable output resolutions that goes from SVGA to full HD 1080p. It has a wide range of signal inputs from composites to VGAs to DVIs. There are two VGA outputs and two very unique CAT/5 outputs for convenient extension over long distance, up to 300 meters.

Hitachi unveils interactive classroom technology

Japanese electronics major, seeking to take big strides in e-learning domain, unveiled on the InfoComm MEA show floor its interactive classroom technology by what it called the BZ-1M solution. The system is nothing but a simple electronic mechanism that delivers a complete interactive experience on any flat surface. The compact BZ-1M, like the other models in the Ultimate range, is easy to install, easy on the environment and designed to deliver outstanding performance in any setting.

Central to the system is the Hitachi Ultimate iPJ-AW250NM projector that comes with a slew of features like 2500 ANSI Lumens; WXGA (1280 x 800); 2000:1 contrast ratio; 80” (203cm) image from only 56cm; and up to 5000 hour cleaning cycle. The fully interactive, versatile wall-mountable system is suitable for any flat surface and bundled with interactive pen.

According to Arman A Khan, Hitachi’s Regional Manager-B2B, the system

is capable of delivering the entire functionality of an interactive whiteboard – sans the board! The system relies on infrared communication- the iPJ-AW250N is capable of turning any flat surface into an interactive whiteboard. It also utilizes ultrasonic communication that helps overcome interferences associated with infrared spectrum.

Clearly targeting education and corporate environments, the system boasts of an ultra-short-throw lens which enables it to be mounted close to a wall or a projection surface. The whole idea of this lens is to prevent any form of obstructed images and shadows, and best of all for the presenter no light will be aimed at his/her eyes.

For business users, the system offers wide range of graphics tools, templates, colors and resources for creating compelling presentations. The iPJ-AW250N also plays nice with PowerPoint, Word, PDF, JPEG and other formats as they are imported straight into the system– all without the need for a computer, of course.

The stall did attract quite a few visitors attention.

52 EXHIBITION PREVIEW Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012

ISE 2012 to scale new heightsWith its largest-ever show floor and a host of new networking and education initiatives, the next Integrated Systems Europe will be a truly global forum for AV businessOccupying more halls of its Amsterdam RAI venue, hosting a more diverse range of exhibitors, and staging a greater number of global new technology launches than ever before, the next Integrated Systems Europe will be the largest professional AV and systems integration trade show ever held in Europe.

From Tuesday 31 January until Thursday 2 February 2012, manufacturers, distributors, integrators, specifiers and technology managers from over 100 countries worldwide will converge on Amsterdam, all with the same series of goals in mind – to discover new technologies, to network with business contacts old and new, and to acquire the market intelligence and technical knowledge necessary to stay one step ahead of the game in the years to come.

With one new hall added, ISE 2012 will

occupy a footprint some 15% greater than the 2011 show, which itself had offered a larger area of exhibit space than any previous Integrated Systems Europe. Dozens of companies will be

showing their wares at ISE for the first time, while Sony is among a number of manufacturers returning to the show after missing the 2011 event.

Well in excess of 30,000 people are expected to attend ISE during the three

days – all of them bona fide members of the systems integration community, taking their place in what is globally recognized as one of the most focused B2B trade shows to serve AV and its related markets.

Eve-of-show activities: thought leadership and business development

The action begins the day before the show opens, on Monday 30 January, with a series of Conferences and, for the first time this year, an ISE Keynote Speech designed to define not just the week’s events but also the shape of the systems integration industry in tomorrow’s business climate.

New for this year is Dynamic Events 2012, a one-day international forum for the event production industry. Organised by Mondiale Publishing in association with the company’s

Page 53: Systems Integration Asia Dec & Jan 2012

53Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 EXHIBITION PREVIEW

magazines TPi and mondo*dr, Dynamic Events is dedicated to the use of lighting, sound, video and staging technologies in large-scale entertainment and sporting environments. The 2012 edition will focus on international ceremonies which receive a global televised audience and which, because of their scale, their need for creative innovation and their mission-critical nature, pose particular challenges to the event community.

The list of speakers for Dynamic Events 2012 reads like a “who’s who” of the large-scale event design industry, with each presentation being followed by a panel discussion looking at a specific area of event technology: light, sound, video, and staging.

Running alongside Dynamic Events is the 2012 edition of DiSCO – the Digital Signage Conference. Now in its fourth year, this one-day meeting point for the global digital signage and out-of-home advertising industry offers a unique insight into how technologies of today will shape the network roll-outs and business models of tomorrow.

Organised by Invidis Consulting in conjunction with the trade association OVAB Europe, DiSCO – the Digital Signage Conference will this year offer a compelling mix of presentations alternating between the story as told by the user – focusing on the concept, issues and solutions – and the view of the supplier or manufacturer who will provide the perspective from ‘the other side’, looking at the technologies and products that were the platform for the solution.

The third and final Conference taking place on Monday 30 January is InfoComm International’s Future Trends Summit. After a successful launch at ISE 2011, the Summit will

again embrace a wide variety of topics, with the goal of creating an engaging conversation about the many technologies, changes and challenges affecting the professional AV industry today. Subjects to be covered range from the latest in displays to network bandwidth challenges, to using Cloud computing, and more.

At the close of all three Conferences, delegates will converge with other ISE attendees from every link in the integration value chain to hear the first-ever ISE Keynote Speech. Gerhard Schulz, Senior VP at Ingram Micro, will deliver his ‘Blueprint for Business Growth in the Digital Age’ – a 40-minute insight into how one of the world’s largest IT industry distributors has diversified from volume to value and beyond into vertical markets.

Describing the journey along which Ingram has stayed one step ahead of integrator and reseller requirements by meeting new manufacturers and discovering new technologies to distribute, Schulz will explain how integrators and resellers, in turn, can stay ahead of end-user demands by embracing the transition from analogue to digital – as well as outlining the dangers of failing to do so.

The Keynote will be followed by an Opening Reception at which manufacturers, distributors, integrators and end-users alike will be invited to meet with one another over complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres, all on-site at the RAI and within a few steps of ISE’s exhibition halls.

Eleven halls, one mission: to educate and inspire

As well as hosting more exhibitors and a greater range of new opportunities than ever before, ISE 2012 will also offer a series of new concepts designed to make visiting the show an even more valuable experience.

For the first time in 2012, Digital Signage technology will be focused on a single area, occupying the whole of Hall 10 and an adjoining section of Hall 9 at the Amsterdam RAI. The end result will be a larger gathering of digital-signage solutions than at any other trade show in the world – with complimentary technologies such as multimedia control, signal management, displays and much more readily accessible elsewhere on the show floor.

Meeting demand from exhibitors and visitors alike, ISE 2012 will also see a larger Residential Solutions Area than ever, with new stands in Hall 7 providing

Page 54: Systems Integration Asia Dec & Jan 2012

54 EXHIBITION PREVIEW Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012

a logical and convenient addition to the established zone in Halls 1, 4, and 5.

Another innovation is the Unified Communications Hall – a single area dedicated to audio, video and data conferencing, collaboration and communication within the enterprise. Presented in conjunction with the IMCCA, this highly focused area – occupying the whole of Hall 12 – will incorporate its own purpose-built Theatre space for presentations, and offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for both integrators and their customers.

Joining forces: CEDIA and InfoComm drive new Education Zone

In the meeting rooms above Hall 12, ISE will for the first time offer its programme of association-led education sessions in a single location. The ISE Education Zone, powered by InfoComm International and CEDIA, will have a single reception area where attendees can register for courses offered by either association, with all tuition rooms located in the same building and simplified signage offering a much more convenient way for visitors to attend multiple sessions.

Also new for ISE 2012 is ‘Integration in Action’, a series of show features designed to demonstrate the power of AV and associated technologies, and the end-user appeal that can be created when solutions from multiple

manufacturers and other suppliers are combined together in compelling and creative ways.

From networked inter-operability on the AVnu Alliance stand to application-focused presentations in an expanded 3D Theatre, novel uses for interactive technologies and the latest trends in large-scale display, ‘Integration in Action’ promises to demonstrate not just technical innovation but new ways in which end-customers can receive a rapid and reliable return on their investment.

“More than ever in 2012, ISE will offer ‘all the connections you need’,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “We are proud to be hosting the largest show floor in the history of our event, and equally proud to be adding so many new initiatives designed to appeal not just to our existing attendee base, but to people who have never visited ISE before.

“While ISE remains a European-flavoured event, it is now a forum for global business, and expect to be receiving visitors from more countries than ever before in 2012. Regardless of your company’s place in our industry’s value chain, your level of experience in our community or your country of origin, we guarantee you a warm welcome in Amsterdam at the end of January!”

Good response to InfoComm training

INDIA: The second part of the on-going training in AV Design by InfoComm Asia was conducted in two metropolitan cities of India recently. Titled DES213 Level2: Infrastructure, the three-day programme was organized from 16-18 October in New Delhi and 20-22 October in Bengaluru.

The course sought to explore various aspects that affect the planning and design of the infrastructure required for AV environments including HVAC, electrical, cable pathways, lighting, IT connectivity, etc. As part of the training, the participants were required to create a portfolio documenting recommended design processes and sample documentation for reference while working on future AV design projects.

The training programme was attended by practising professionals from AVSI industry with diverse specializations. While the programme was interesting for

many, it sounded a little too technical and complex for some participants who came for the first time. However, the material offered, and the way it was sought to be explained and worked out was of high quality, most participants opined.

“For those who attended the first programme, this looks just a continuity, and it’s good,” said Chandrashekar Naik S-CTS, from T2 Consulting. “Programmes like this are actually required to hone up the skills of AV professionals,” he opined.

“It’s a bit too technical and honestly it takes a good time to understand the material,” felt Krishnamoorthy G of AGC Networks. Overall, it is good, said Lokesh of Vector. We honestly look forward to the next level, he said.

Capital Plaza secured by Ateis SystemsUAE: Ateïs Middle East recently completed one of the most prestigious installs in the region- a priority voice alarm system in Abu Dhabi’s Capital Plaza multi-tower complex. The mixed-use complex, with a cluster of five towers housing both residential and commercial spaces, houses the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche hotel- a luxury embellishment for the whole complex.

The Capital Plaza complex, as it is, boasts a mass notification system pertaining to the requirements of European and British standards and compliant with UAE Civil Defence regulations. To further augment that, the design for life safety mechanism inside the towers demanded a fully centralised control of all the systems installed across the five towers.

Having been entrusted with the task, Ateïs Middle East designed and installed a secure network for public address and voice alarm (PA/VA) and background music. The PA/VA systems have been integrated with the complex’s fire alarms systems to trigger alerts and evacuation messages in the event of fire or emergency situations.

Central to the PA/VA system is the IDA4M controller, which stores voice alarm messages and initiates evacuation by means of a series of loudspeaker circuits. The 19-inch PA/VA

racks have been fitted with stackable IDA4M controllers and switching units, amplifiers, audio processors, and paging microphone consoles, in addition to CD players and AM/FM tuners that are meant for background music. All IDA4M system components and peripherals are monitored, including microphone consoles, loudspeakers, and music sources.

The five towers in Capital Plaza together have a total of 13 PA/VA racks networked to allow monitoring and control of loudspeaker circuits from various locations. The racks are again networked with one another by using linked audio processors. These devices are fed with signal processing tools such as pre-amplifier, compressor-limiter, equaliser, as well as matrixing and delay functions in a single unit.

The system is weaved in such a way that integration of IDA and LAP devices enables simultaneous transmission of as many as 48 commercial audio channels on the PA/VA network.

Voice alarm messages and background music are amplified and played on loudspeaker circuits comprising a combination of over 4,000 fire-rated, ceiling-mount, wall-mount, and horn speakers, selected on the basis of their applications in various zones in the

buildings, viz-a-viz, corridors, halls, and parking lots. Models in use for the project include the RCS5/FTS ceiling speaker, the weatherproof MSH30 horn speaker, and the wall-mount Sentry6/STC speakers.

Each tower has been equipped with a dedicated touch screen security paging microphone console connected to the building’s master rack allowing security personnel to page individual zones within the tower as and when necessary. The Plaza’s Central Security Control Room has been equipped with a PSS96DT console which allows authorised personnel to issue alerts to individual towers as a whole. This paging from the security control room is assigned the highest priority and it overrides voice alarm messages and background music playing in the five towers.

In a high-end security set-up mechanism, additional paging microphone consoles, and PSM, have been installed in the Sofitel Hotel, for addressing special zones such as restaurants and drop off zones. This facility enables hotel staff to address a particular zone and convey messages to visitors within the zone.

MECIA seeks to sensitize AVSI industry activism

UAE: One of the interesting aspects at the InfoComm MEA was the breakfast get-together of the industry professionals. Organized by Middle East Communications Industries Association (MECIA), the programme aimed at sensitizing the audio-visual and systems integration industry professionals and buyers towards the challenges facing the global industry and the measures required in the near and long term.

Kevan Jones CTS, Executive Director of MECIA, who welcomed the gathering, gave the inaugural address. Appraising the industry about the current scenario and the challenges being faced by it in the wake of the emerging AV and IT Convergence dynamics, he called upon the AVSI leaders and professionals to focus on potential challenges being thrown by the IT multinationals that

could gobble up the identity of AV as an independent entity.

As if to capture the mood and mindset, the same ideation was put forth by George Puthenkulam, Chief Technology Officer at Mindserve, who delivered the Chief Guest address. Having just returned from his participation at the InfoComm 100 congregation in the USA – a gathering of select industry captains aimed at addressing the most concerning issues of global AVSI domain – George sought to present the mood of the industry. The IT major’s aggression at capturing what is still a purely AV domain by acquiring AV enterprises, or developing compelling technologies and rendering AV brethren dependent on IT for survival, was evident from the recent developments, he said. While AVSI industry has its own strengths and niche domains that IT cannot independently address, the AV industry could not afford to sit pretty, he noted.

According to the Mindserve CTO, AV professionals, particularly those in the design domain need to understand the customer needs very precisely and remain focused on the same till they had ensured the customer specs had been fully met. Human skill had to be the centre of the strategy while addressing the requirement. Industry leaders at the

gathering came out in unison about the indispensability of measures required to uphold the unique value proposition that AV brings to the customer.

The platform was also shared by Richard Brook, Executive Director at IIR Exhibitions Middle East, who took up the cause of AV industry joining the initiative of PALME Middle East.

The gathering included CEOs, technology leaders, design and consultancy professionals, dealers and distributors of AVSI industry.

61Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 INDIA & ME INTERVIEW

Understanding the Customers’ Mind and NeedsCritical government functionaries taking to corporate echelons may not be very uncommon. However, the same representing a package of professional solutions makes it unique. Abel Garamhegyi, managing director of Barco Electronic (P) Ltd., India, is one such unique proposition. A Doctorate in Social Geography, besides an MBA, the young Hungarian leader’s profile includes high-level academics, critical governmental roles, and corporate dynamism. SIA interacted with the new Head of Barco India to know what he is all up to. Excerpts:

SIA: Congratulations on the new embarkment. How does it feel to be at the head of Barco India, besides being in the top echelon of Barco n.v.?

AG: The role of India in Barco has been steadily increasing, and it is really a great challenge for me to be able to fulfill the expectations towards India.

SIA: What excites you the most in the continental geography of your jurisdiction, and India, in particular?

AG: I am currently taking care of countries from Nordic region to India- six offices and over two dozen languages which itself – as diverse as it can get – is a lot for excitement. In India particularly, if a statement is valid here, then the opposite of that statement is also valid- that excites me the most, to be able to find a balance in between and get things moving.

SIA: You have been an active government functionary and policy maker. It is a little intriguing to see you shifting to pure corporate world. What made you do so?

AG: I was in corporate world before joining the government. I feel it is a natural process and is always good for both the sectors, whether government or business, because you share and value add with your past experience in both. It rather helps complement each other in a better fashion.

SIA: How does the former portfolio gel with the latter?

AG: Almost the same thing, I was the sales and marketing officer of a country earlier, and I am responsible for sales and marketing of a company now. That the basic nature of the portfolio is same in both the cases, I need to understand people; their needs and desires, and try to cater to the same- whether in government or corporate functionary capacity.

SIA: You have been, and still continue to be, an academician too. What connect

you find between your two previous domains and the corporate one?

AG: I strongly feel that it is the duty and obligation of every professional to share what one learned. To some extent, it’s a little personal too for me as it gives an opportunity to interact with the young generation; and keep young and fresh with new ideas and thoughts. It’s easier to do business because you understand them and can connect with them at a suitable wavelength.

SIA: Is there any marked change in your perception about the EMEAI markets before, and after taking over the reins?

AG: We learn as we grow. I have traveled almost to all these countries before and always kept my eyes and ears open to learn and understand more and more. I still do it to mark any change and to be able to get tuned according to those developments.

SIA: How do you look at each of the markets in the EMEAI region? And how would you look at India in comparison with the other markets?

AG: The markets are fairly different and they all represent good potential. Obviously, the challenge in Scandinavia is different as we do 90 per cent of our business through partners. In India we do most of it directly. While Russia is a huge market with very specific dynamics and requires lot of local knowledge, Middle East is the most quality sensitive market. On the other hand, Turkey is very much emotionally driven business. So each country and market is different from the other. The difference with India is very high density of population that presents a different set of dynamics.

SIA: What strengths and weaknesses do you see in Indian market?

AG: I feel the strength of Indian market is its very dynamic growth and logical kind of decision making. The weakness, however, is that it is still not considering long term advantages of quality, and I understand that this may be because of

shortage of finances. I would anyway, like to be very optimistic about this critical dynamic.

SIA: What exactly is your objective in the current role?

AG: Our objective is to achieve more sustainable and dynamic growth in production and sales for all markets.

SIA: What strengths did / do you bring to place towards realizing the objective?

AG: Quick decision making, team work and local self confidence.

SIA: What strengths do you feel lacking or intend to add?

AG: Serving the local needs and desires- for example, manufacturing the mid range products for Indian market.

SIA: Barco India is operating in many domains - which domain you feel is most promising and/ or most challenging? And why?

AG: Most promising are Digital Cinema, Simulation and Healthcare. Most challenging, of course, the Pro AV & Control room environments.

SIA: Some of the manufacturing giants have been creating market buzz through road shows etc. Barco had never been. How about that?

AG: A road show is a marketing tactic as any other. We didn’t choose to use this tactic in the past but this can definitely become one in the near future. In the past we approached the Indian market in another way. We always intend to get feedback from our end-user and the local partners to launch the products tailored to their needs, and we will have programmes according to that.

SIA: What is your nearest aim? How near do you find yourself to it?

AG: To understand how our customers think about Barco in India. I hope I am closer than I think.

Academic excellence with AVIIT Bombay features a very ingenious audio-visual systems integration solutionby Bhavanashi Ramakrishna

IIT Bombay – one the most high-profile seats of academic excellence in the country – has always been on the high when it came to leveraging technology for imparting education with sophistication. The institution recently ramped up its facilities on its campus at Powai with state-of-the-art infrastructure that is characterized by a very ingenious audio-visual systems integration solution. SIA presents an account.

IIT Bombay – one of the most revered technology institutions from the early independent India – caters to diverse requirements of technical education and research in the country. Boasting high profile faculties and infrastructural embellishments, the institution attracts the crème de la crème of students as well as academicians from all over the country and overseas every year which

makes its requirements ever growing.

Towards meeting this, as well as ramping up its existing facilities, the institution recently spruced up its facilities under its lecture hall modernization programme. The intent behind the programme was to transform current classrooms from an instructor-centered environment to a student-centered multimedia environment with worldwide access to approved training material. In order to accomplish this arduous task, a technical modernization and upgrade of systems was indispensable.

The institution management had roped in a whole big team of professional designers, consultants and integrators to enliven its vision. An all-Mumbai-based team for the purpose comprised Madhiwalla

Construction Consultants Pvt Ltd as architect-designers, John Mech-El Technologies (P) Ltd. as audio-visual consultants and AllWave AV as the audio-visual system integrator.

The task of the programme involved execution of completely customized audio-visual system integration solution for its new lecture hall complex that comprised three types of lecture halls. There are as many as eight lecture halls of 150 seats each, and four lecture halls of 220 seats each, besides four large lecture halls of 350 seats each. All the halls had to be equipped with sophisticated multimedia systems which also had to be rugged and long-lasting, besides being cost-effective. Also, ease of use had to be their central functionality. It’s a big and tough spec, anyway!

The 350-seat lecture halls featuring NP3250 projectors from NEC and 150-inch diagonal Remaco motorized screens

Page 63: Systems Integration Asia Dec & Jan 2012

63Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 INDIA & ME INSTALLATIONS

The simplest of all, the 150-seat lecture halls comprised a dual screen front projection display system from RemacoTech allowing for computer presentation from a single dedicated Dell Zino digital workstation and DVD/VCR playback. The size of the room being a big space constraint, systems had to be compact with a front projection system. Interactive touch panels hosted on Cue Systems control processors with dedicated thin clients from Dell have been used throughout the classrooms. A variety of content can be displayed from various sources such as the instructor’s workstation computer; auxiliary laptops; VCR/DVD players; and document cameras. The instructors’ workstation is equipped with an interactive podium pen display system with a stylus and wide aspect ratio capability that can also be used as a Touch control panel to control the devices installed in the lecture halls.

A multi-zone in-ceiling speaker system from Crown and Sonodyne was brought in to provide audio and voice reinforcement from sources or the wireless RF microphone or the wired desk-mounted instructor microphone. A desk touch panel enables all control and switching for all audio and video sources.

The 220-seat halls are moderately-sized while the 350-seat halls are comparatively large and provided for both opportunities and challenges. Cumulatively, an enhanced system has been incorporated to cater to all the functional capabilities of the basic system, but also expands upon that by providing varying levels of functionality. The larger classroom environment is intended for the instructor to access digital media, control presentations,

and use traditional lecture methods for a large auditorium or lecture hall, for groups of 200 or more students.

The AV system in the mid-range 220-seat halls thus comprised two front projection screen options: two short throw DLP projectors from Infocus with two 150-inch diagonal motorized projection screens from RemacoTech. Similarly, for the 350-seat lecture hall, the video part consisted three front-projection systems with High Brightness NP3250 projectors from NEC. They are complemented by three 150-inch diagonal Remaco motorized screens to give a clear view of presentations from across the room.

The rest of the enhanced systems again expanded upon the basic systems but increased their capability enabling the instructor with increased control over the academic activity. That the larger classrooms featured ceilings that are double the height of smaller halls, they required specialized sound reinforcement system. To meet this requirement, the integrator proposed and installed line arrays for the speaker system. The rooms have short throw projectors installed to project large image from a very reasonable distance to maintain the aesthetics. The whole system is controlled by the Touch Screen mounted on the lectern, and can be easily accessed by the trainer.

Going by numbers, it’s a massive install in that it comprised as many as

• 36 front projection screens fromRemacoTech;

• 28 projectors from NEC (NP1250 &NP3250)

• 8Infocusprojectors• 16BiampNexiasignalprocessors

• 16Sonodynealignarrayspeakers• 32Sonodyneceilingspeakers• 16Crownamplifiers• 16CueepsilonandGammaprocessors• 16DellZinoThinClients• Besidesgooseneckmicrophonesfrom

AKG and beyerdynamic,

While every component element had a role to play in the AV technology show, it was more significant for Cue Systems which is a relatively new entrant to the Indian market. “Our challenge was to showcase our strengths and give IIT-B and the consultant the confidence that we have a great solution and are here to stay for the long run,” explains Hiten Desai, Cue Systems’ India rep.

The controllers and ipCUE-gamma, made a big impact. The interactive podium with audio, drapes, video, annotation have proved to be very useful to the users with quick controls at their fingertips, saving significant time.

“IIT-B, by all means, is a prestigious project,” says Kuldip Kamat, managing director of Allwave AV. “While it was large by size, we had no major challenges, except a little re-work of specs owing to the revisions made to the original design.”

However, for the large lecture halls that are almost the size of high-end auditoriums the execution required expertise, he admits, but claims that their skilled team made it look very easy with what he called a “specially designed 30-points installation checklist.”

The IIT-B lecture hall modernization install is now, a truly all(wave)-AV show.

A ‘Green’ Video Wall of powerBarco’s solutions helps ATPL uphold its green commitment

ACME Tele Power Ltd (ATPL), India’s first provider of passive infrastructure components for telecom operators, is a place for many unique statements. Besides being key technology solutions provider for global wireless telecom industry, the company is also known for its expertise in energy management services and end-to-end green solution. The Gurgaon-based enterprise has recently made yet another statement- a high-performance, state-of-the-art video wall to help monitor its holistic operations. SIA presents an account.

When the Gurgaon-based passive infrastructure major ATPL – having adopted sustainability as central to all of its solutions – wanted to augment its massively expanding operations from its central office, it opted to install a sizeable video wall that could project every nuance of the company’s operations while upholding its green commitment.

The company’s green solutions include consultancy, design, manufacture and maintenance services. One of the most important aspects of its product offerings under this initiative is the ‘Green Shelter’- a complete package to deploy various environment and temperature

parameters at telecom sites, avoiding the running of backup systems like diesel generators.

ATPL had all along been monitoring its operations and processes on PCs. “A full-fledged visualization solution, including a video wall, was a logical extension to our end-to-end offering,” says Satya Dev Adurti, Vice-President(IT) at the ATPL. “We were confident it would help us upgrade our services.”

had to be very practical and based on a combination of assets.

“First of all, Barco is a reference beacon that is known to deliver excellent quality. The company has a local presence here in India, with production and customer support locally available,” says Adurti. “the company proposed the best solution,” he explains, “more importantly, they promised they could help us meet our tight deadline.”

Ninety days from concept to go live! That was the timeframe set for the initiative to go on stream. With a view to accomplishing the task on time, if not before, Barco evolved a meticulous design for the purpose, and deployed a strong, professional team of twelve engineers that worked hard to deliver the project on time.

The design intended installation of an 18-cube (9 x 2 configuration), LED-lit rear-projection video wall with OL-710 cubes. That LED-lit projection technology is the most eco-friendly technology available for the purpose, Barco chose to do it, and roped its OL series to take ATPL’s green approach one step further. The recyclable materials and the smart

“We were the first to market passive infrastructure components and strive to be the market leader in the field, with a focus on sustainability. Barco’s latest LED-lit (rear-projection) video wall for our center meets our focuson sustainability”

Satya Dev Adurti, Vice President, IT, ACME Tele Power Limited.

The company combed the market and examined the proposals of several bidders, and preferred Noida-based visual solutions major Barco. The choice

power management had to be there to back-up. The projection system had been equipped with a liquid cooling system that was tasked to bring the LED temperature down to an optimal level.

This resulted in a significantly longer wear life of the projection system, amounting to 75,000 hours of continuous operation – or a 35 per cent improvement on competing video walls.

By combining the liquid cooling technique with the advantages of using LEDs instead of lamps, the OL series offer an exceptional level of brightness – around 20 per cent more when compared to other solutions – and saturated colors. Its Sense6 auto-calibration technology is claimed to further ensure the color and brightness uniformity, over time and across the entire display, so that no maintenance or manual adjustments are needed. The operators also laud the system’s user-friendliness.

Connect – Control - CollaborateAnother distinct asset of the Barco set-up is the advanced CMS-200 control room management suite which allows for easy display wall management, efficient collaboration and fast decision making in any control room. The management suite provides ATPL’s operators and decision-makers with prompt access to information and allows them to connect to the data, configure how it is displayed, and collaborate in the most efficient way.

Clear, real-time overview“Currently, 60 ATPL staff are working with the system – a number which we

intend to increase to 120 in the future,” Satya Dev Adurti explains. “They can now accurately monitor the energy flows and remotely check all the power plants, in real time. In addition, they visualize feeds from live video cameras from different sites across the globe.”

According to him, by having a clear overview of up-to-date information at all times, ATPL staff could react quickly in the event of any problem situation, and initiate a required action.

The OL - 710 modules ensure the sharpest and most saturated colors, maintenance-free operation and the green focus that perfectly fits ACME’s strategy: there are no wearing parts, no waste, no mercury lamps and the modules pledge up to 75,000 hours of LED lifetime – more than 8.5 years of continuous operation.

The Ravishing RavizSUUS, E&E integrate technology into natural beautyby Bhavanashi Ramakrishna

Luxury resorts and leisure destinations have been built galore around the globe- but arguably nothing like this. It presents the best evocative setting for a poet; it ushers in stunningly unexpected environs for an explorer; it captivates the designer minds with the typically traditional yet modernized décor; and it blends technology with the natural setting to unveil what it claims to be a ‘Heaven,’ in God’s Own Country!

The Raviz, in Kollam, the beautiful beachside city in the South Indian State of Kerala is a new revelation both for tradition and technology. SUUS Electronics and E & E Systems India took the honours. SIA presents an account of this unique destination.

A result of twelve years of hard work from conception to completion, this unique property is a labour of love. Nestled in the secluded backwaters of the Arabian Sea, The Raviz is the perfect blend of elegant and modern architecture; beautifully

combined with traditional design of the pre-Independence era. A host of traditional artisans, architects, engineers and waterway specialists laboured to evolve the stunningly beautiful Raviz- one of its kind and India’s first seven-star luxury resort!

One can indulge in nature’s luxurious surroundings and tranquil waters, while they are swept away by its enchanting beauty. The serene Ashtamudi Backwaters exude stillness and calm, while its exotic beauty, freshness and purity captivate the guests. Caparisoned elephants radiating the golden warmth of pristine and festive Kerala join in unrolling a red-carpet welcome to visitors.

An important part of this unique hotel

is the Convention Center designed by renowned Thiruvanthapuram-based designers Iyer & Mahesh Architects. When The Raviz wanted an integrated audio visual system for their Convention Center, they both zeroed in

The main hall with EAW JFL 210 Speakers and EAW JFL 118 Subwoofer.

on M/S SUUS Electronics of Cochin. However, that the SUUZ Electronics felt it could compete only with the video part, there was a need for a specialist audio integrator too. Team Raviz thus roped in E&E Systems from Bengaluru to take the audio integration honour.

“Our core competence lies in video,” says Sunish Jose of SUUS. “That we did not want to comprise on any small detail, we brought E&E onboard for audio.”

In a rarity for the AVSI community, budget was not a constraint as The Raviz wanted only the best solution. Repeated rounds of sittings and reworking on the specsheets, the team decided that a state-of-the-art AV solution was required for the main hall and two dining halls which are attached to the main hall on two separate floors, besides the Convention Center.

The Audio Visual equipment installed in the Convention Center included 6 boxes of EAW-JFL 210 line array speakers with 3 on each side and 2 Nos EAW JFL 118 subwoofers in the center. The speakers have been powered with QSC RMX series amplifiers. To support the setting, Mackie Thump TH 15A powered speakers have been used as stage monitors. For all live performances, the entire system connects to Mackie Pro FX12 mixer. Complementing the system is QSC Rave 522ua that formed the Audio DSP backbone of the entire system. High-end Sennheiser wired and wireless microphones have also been used in the installation.

The video solution has been weaved in with 3 Nos of Hitachi’s 5000 Lumen CP-X5021N projectors that are ceiling mounted and motorized to facilitate moving up and down, and blend with the ceiling design. Due to distance of the projectors from the control room, the integrators had to put in place a video distribution system that could transmit HDMI video signal for over 75 meters without any loss, so they decided to use a product called H-Dlight P 1000 which transmits the HDMI signal over optical fiber cable and then converts it back into HDMI signal at the receiver end.

The screening solution has been done with 30’x10’ high gain screen from Galalite that is powered by a motorized system to move up and down. To power the whole setting, it is equipped with a full-fledged control system by AMX whose products included EXP 8431, NXD 500i and Ni 700 Master Controller unit. Besides, the Center also features Line Array by EAW, console by Mackie, and amp and DSPs by QSC.

This apart, two 46” LCDs have been installed at the back of the Convention Center, and two more LCDs of same configuration have been fitted in two dining halls to facilitate streaming video content as and when required.

The project was commissioned and handed over in August.

“It was one of the most unique projects we ever worked,” claims an excited Roshan Malim of E&E. “While we enjoyed every bit of the project execution, we also realized how significant was the task,” he said, “there were indeed challenges, and we got over them due to the competencies we have built into our working process.”

Roshan Malin of E&E Systems (India) Pvt Ltd. handled the technical aspects of the projects.

Federal National Council (FNC) – the United Arab Emirates main Parliamentary body – is central to the regime that governs the entire UAE. The Zayed Grand Hall in the country’s capital Abu Dhabi is the seat of the country’s governance where FNC regularly debates and decides on the policy regime shaping the country. That the FNC decided to spruce its seat with modern technology so as to make a statement as well as administer the country with sophistication, the ‘grand’ venue was recently equipped with an ambitious audio-visual system.

When the FNC made its final call on redefining the technology infrastructure at its seat of administration the Zayed Grand Hall in Abu Dhabi, the task of executing the same new AV system had been entrusted to the locally based Business Link Electronics. The Grand Hall, a very refined space by design, is a large hall that is characterized by a total of 76 tables for the members, each fitted with a dedicated PC, keyboard, and monitor. The FNC’s objective was to create a system that facilitates picking up signals from a vast range of sources, viz-a-viz, satellite, cable, broadcast cameras, DVD, outside broadcasting vans, and PCs, as well as from the control desk, minister’s desk, delegate’s desk, and podium and displaying the same on members’ PCs, besides a 65-inch (165 cm) LCD display at the front of the hall.

Business Link Electronics knew they had to do a high-end work to fulfill the criteria. They upfront decided to use CAT 5-type cabling with Extron twisted pair transmitters and receivers, as well as Extron switchers and distribution amplifiers. “Given the distances involved and the complex signal paths,

Zayed Grand Hall installs new AV systemExtron solutions enable installer to meet requirements

Extron MTA DA twisted pair distribution amplifiers drive signals throughout the hall

we knew Extron twisted pair technology was the best solution,” says Business Link Electronics General Manager Mohammad Jassim.

Centralized Scaling and SwitchingThe system was designed around an Extron IN1508 Eight Input Scaling Presentation Switcher with PIP, which acts as a signal gatekeeper; processing and distributing all incoming AV signals. The IN1508 optimizes incoming standard definition and computer-video to a single 1024x768 output resolution. The IN1508 features seamless switching to select the specific content that all members can view simultaneously without any distracting visual jumps, glitches, or distortion.

Signals from each source travel either directly to the IN1508 or through Extron signal processing and distribution equipment, such as MDA Series video distribution amplifiers and MTP Series twisted pair extenders and switchers. Signals that are meant to be displayed as multiple images are routed through an Extron MGP 464 Multi Graphic Processor. The media staff created various layout presets for the MGP 464, which can be recalled by the system operator, using the control system.

Signal Distribution to 80 DisplaysThere are as many as 80 separate displays in the Grand Hall ambience and with a view to setting up the ability to send signals from the AV control room to all the 80 separate displays, over long distances and complex cabling paths, Business Link Electronics used the MTP Series twisted pair transmitters and

a cascade of MTP DA4 and MTP DA8 distribution amplifiers.

It was so networked that signals from various sources arrive at the tables closest to the AV control room via an Extron VTR001 receivers. That the tables use longer range MTP RL 15HD A receivers, further from the control room, a simple contact closure switch at each table enables members to toggle between the incoming signal and their local PC via an Extron VSW 2VGA A Two Input VGA and Stereo Audio Switcher.

ControlControl of the system is generally assigned to an exclusive media supervisor, but occasionally to other staff members too. To facilitate easy conductance of the operations, the integrator used Extron’s TLP 700TV 7” TouchLink tabletop touchpanel, paired with an IPL 250 Ethernet control processor, which together controls all AV sources - projectors and screens, a Panasonic broadcast camera switcher, the MGP 464, and the IN1508.

“TouchLink gives us complete control of a very sophisticated AV system, and makes it easy for our members to use,” states Jassim. The result is a sophisticated but user-friendly AV system, installed on time and within budget, allowing the FNC members to communicate more effectively on crucial matters of governance.

Hakka Methodist Church installs KV2KV2’s first church installation in Singapore delivers impressively

Completed in 1967, the most distinctive feature of this iconic modern church building located at Evelyn Rd is its angular roof form. Designed to resemble a Gothic-styled roof, its underside mimics the ribs and webs of the traditional internal vaults, presenting them in a modern manner with the skilful use of reinforced concrete. The building was given conservation status on 25 November 2005 by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore. This also meant that when the church recently refurbished its Sanctuary, it had limitations imposed which proved to be a challenge for the appointed Acoustic consultant, Robert Soo of Cogent Acoustics.

“The tall angular roof, the glass windows which we could not touch due to the church’s conservation status, the flooring, the pews, all combined did give me a challenge. Apparently for many years the congregation had to put up with an inadequate sound system and a non-conducive acoustic environment for reinforced sound. So when the Sanctuary was up for refurbishment, I was called in early to help ensure a more pleasant experience for the congregation. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to come in an early stage as this helped me suggest solutions that would help in controlling reverberation and so forth,” says Robert.

Serious consideration was placed on the choice of the speakers. Six brands were involved in the loudspeaker shoot-out which was assessed by the Church pastors, Robert Soo as well as the Church Committee. At the end of

the demonstrations, KV2 Audio was unanimously chosen.

of the system from the congregation – I believe they enjoyed their service very much,” says Reverend Daniel Lee.

The main speakers being the KV2 ES1.0 3-way point source and KV2 ESD10 down fill were all hung from the ceiling in a left and right configuration in the front of the alter. KV2 ES1.8 18 inch subwoofers were floor mounted to provide the deep end. Delay loudspeakers wasn’t an option as the ceiling structures were not designed to carry loads, as such the front clusters had to do all the work in filling the 350 capacity church. “Some of the church members were initially unsure that the system would effectively cover the whole 24 meters depth of the church seating area, but they were pleasantly surprised when they heard how clear, pristine and even the sound was from wherever you were standing or sitting in the church,” says Robert.

Amplification for the Main and sub speakers was provided by two units of the KV2 EPAK2500R and for the Down-fill, the amps were two units of the QSC RMX2450. Mixing was done on an A&H ZED428, which is an analogue system that was in the church’s inventory for some time, complemented with a new A&H PA12.

According to Reverend Daniel Lee the KV2 system retained natural sound flow and the sound was very clear for vocals and speech without being overpowering.

“The KV2 system retained natural sound flow and the sound was very clear for vocals and speech without being overpowering. The speakers had little distortion and most importantly wherever you are seating the speakers provided even coverage without any delays. Frankly we were very pleased with the sound system. On the first worship service where we used the system, there was a visible appreciation

Blinds were installed for the glass windows

Acoustic panels were added to the back walls as well

On request from the committee, the speakers were painted white so that aesthetically it would blend in with the refurbished environment. Robert adds that since the church’s structure was old, he had to get the structure tested to ensure that the speakers could be

hung safely. “The speaker clusters were hung at strategic positions and angles to provide the required sound dispersion and coverage. Plus it also helped in reducing the amount of undesired room excitation”, says Robert. In addition, Robert had blinds installed for the glass windows and added acoustic panels at the front and back walls, as well as in the front at the altar. This resulted in the RT60 time being brought down from 2 seconds to a more conducive 1.35 seconds.

Said Christopher who has been in the audio industry for more than 23 years, “Rigging of the loudspeakers in such a building is challenging. In the absence of proper structural documentation, we had to decide how the loudspeakers were to be suspended from the ceiling and also consider the method of suspension; of course with the advice of a structural engineer.”

Guangxi environmental pollution monitored through large dnp Supenova wallEight 72” Supernova Infinity Screens installed in a 2 x 4 configuration

A new command room at the Emergency Centre for Environmental Protection in Guangxi Province, China, has been equipped with a large front-projection display wall from dnp Denmark, enabling the agency to better monitor and present the degree of pollution.

Eight 72” Supernova Infinity Screens were supplied by dnp distributors, Wincomn Technology, and installed by Wincomn partner, Jin Yanjing Technology Co., Ltd, who had successfully bid for the contract.

The facility is used for emergency management and the solution was based around a display matrix of Supernova Infinity Screens in a 2 x 4 configuration. These were recommended for their high output in a brightly lit environment, in a 20m x 8m room offering minimum space.

The display, which fills most of the back wall, was optimised using low gain 08-85 screen material, for extreme viewing angles.

Giant dnp rear-pro wall for South China military basednp’s 200” GWA helps customer present large volume of informationWincomn Technology has completed a complex rear projection upgrade in a command room at a military base in Guangdong Province, South China. They achieved this with the aid of advanced displays from dnp denmark, the world’s leading supplier of optical projection screen technology.

The display wall comprises three central 200” GWA (Giant Wide Angle) screens, butted together using narrow bezels, and flanked by a pair of GWA 150” screens. The screens are projected onto by five EIKI projectors – creating a wide field of vision over a massive digital landscape, for military personnel assembled in the large 30m x 20m meeting room.

The customer needed to present a large volume of information being streamed in different formats, including data, graphics, crystal clear high-resolution

Wincomn met the challenges of installing such a large display in this relatively small room by proposing a customised frame for the flexible Infinity Screen, projected onto from ceiling-mounted Christie DS+750 single-chip DLP devices.

The display takes a DVI feed using Extron WindoWall 103 DI multi-window processor and DMS 1600 DVI, matrix switcher, while the camera source is converted to DVI-D via an Extron DVC 501 SD.

Wincomn’s engineer, Ding, comments, “It was certainly a challenge to install a display wall on this scale in such a room. As a command hall, the environmental light is very bright – but high brightness is one of the unique advantages of the Supernova Infinity. We carried out comparative tests for the client with another potential solution but the performance of the Supernova was far superior.”

Li, the Emergency Centre’s head of property management, commented: “Supernova displays the data to perfection in such a bright hall. This screen is really cool.”

images, video and real-time signals. Existing switchers and processors were redeployed for the purpose and multiple windows and PIP’s can be presented across the screen. The display needed to be seamless, and although the client reviewed other options they favoured the high visual acuity and colour rendering of the GWA, as well as the uniformity over the large digital canvas.

Purpose designed for the projection of large, high-quality images in conference and control room with long viewing distances, dnp’s 200” GWA became the world’s first optical rear projection screen when it was introduced. The single element optical system has two active lens surfaces, and due to its lens design offers good brightness uniformity and contrast levels.

A spokesperson for the Command Hall said, “The screens perform excellently and

look virtually seamless. The climate in South China is severe, insofar as screens are subject to high temperature and high humidity. Every three months Wincomn will provide engineer site visits to check and adjust the alignment where the screens butt together, and this will ensure they remain in good condition.”

NTU’s Global Lounge hits the right note with students and faculty

Personalised media content selection made possible with AV systemThe Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is an internationally reputed research-intensive tertiary institution. Their broad-based education covers science and technology, business and the arts, entrepreneurial and leadership skills to prepare students for the global working world. Not surprisingly this fast growing university with an international outlook also attracts many foreign students from across the world.

With that in mind, the University management decided on creating a space for students and faculty from around the globe as well as from Singapore to interact and rest in a comfortable setting. A central location within the University ground was found for this purpose and in August the Global Lounge was born. The Lounge was designed with comfortability in mind and upon entering it there is a symbolic mural showcasing all the different country flags of students from the university.

To ensure that the Lounge AV systems served its purposes, the University worked with Bosch, Kramer Electronics Asia Pacific and systems integrator PAVE System.

One of the design intent is to provide TV media contents to the students at the lounge with the students being able to view and listen to the content/channel according to their respective selection. A Bosch audio system is used to enable the students to personalise their audio selection on a custom built stand. The lounge when necessary was also to double up for presentations. With this in mind PAVE Systems went about to design a system that met with the client’s objectives.

With an understanding of the client’s requirement of multiple input sources of different signal resolutions to be displayed on multiple displays and yet enable personalise listening, the design utilized Sierra video 16x16 Matrix Switcher, multiple Kramer Scalers, 8 units of Samsung 46” LCD panels and one 65” LCD panel to achieve multiple display and Bosch Multi-Channel Audio Selector for personalise listening.

One key aspect of the set-up was the customisation of the sleek stands for the personalise listening system that could be easily removed when required to make space for other events. To this end, a mock up of the customised stand was presented to the client and after some modifications, it was adopted.

The set-up also enables the client to conduct regular presentation through two computer receptacle points situated at the front of the lounge. For presentations, the main audio system is via the EV Digital Matrix Signal Processor and speaker system.

The PAVE team completed the project within 2 weeks. “Kramer and Bosch have been kind to facilitate in the testing and mock up during the conceptualisation of the design intent. Loan units were made available for the customisation process and the client was very helpful in ensuring that the necessary infrastructures were made available for us to complete the project on time” says Jeffrey Lim of PAVE System.

77Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 TECH TALK

Future of AV Industry?

With all the buzz about the global economic situation and burgeoning Eurozone debt, some of us may be missing out on the AV industry buzz that has been increasing its pitch during 2011. It became an important subject for the AV industry to discuss and debate at the ‘InfoComm 100’, organized by InfoComm International in Portland, Oregan-USA this year.

The question asked by many is WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE AV INDUSTRY in this increasingly IT WORLD?

Some thoughts that I would like to share with you emanate around, not what turf AV and/or IT is playing on, but on what the customer is starting to expect and ask for. The customer does not see the differentiation between IT and AV. What he wants is a “solution” to his problem. He will place his business with “he who has the solution” and not “he who is IT or AV.” So, instead of “Domain Possessive” segment if one is to focus on the “Solution Possessive” segment, we have the winning formula.

Also interesting is to watch some of the upcoming trends in both the industry segments.

Here are 10 hard trends that contain some of the simple answers to the question that is being asked about the future of AV and IT:

1The Enterprise CIO is becoming responsible for AV functionality.

Any guess about where he feels more comfortable placing his “trusted relationship” business?

2The “video network” is turning pervasive. For example - Blue Coat (a

WAN optimization and security vendor) showcased WAN acceleration at 50X speeds on the existing networks primarily

targeting video capability as the future of all networks. Cisco has continuously been talking about video becoming the next big growth opportunity in the networking business. Storage, WAN optimization, networking and wireless manufacturers are gearing up their support for video on the network. With Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) becoming an IEEE standard, IT will find it easy to adopt AV within the networking realm.

3Service as a Managed Service (SaaMS) is widely accepted norm

of service management. Most quality minded customers will ask for this service to be part of the AV design-build process.

4Software will replace hardware and provide reliable, interoperable

and dynamic opportunities - bad news if you are still thinking of building hardware dependent systems. For many, the acquisition by Polycom of the small video software company ViVu would have gone un-noticed, but these developments are far-reaching.

5The touch-based tablet/slate will become the preferred human-

machine interaction method with multi-function applications for realizing the “unseen future.” Bad news for all the power hungry, low battery life and control centered touch screens.

6Environmental sustainability will be highest priority on the human

agenda and technology will become the saviour of the planet’s living future. It will also provide new jobs for the future generations and influence quality of life on the planet.

7IT will never be able to replace the high performance AV events

business. I cannot see IT building a 360 degree 50 ft hanging screen, large LED walls or a theatrical and stage performance venue, large stadium and other such venues. (Though I’m quite confident that Conference Rooms, Meeting Rooms, Personal work environments and smaller venues will become IT centric and net-centric, AV will dominate this segment).

8Wireless will be pervasive and the preferred communication method

(limited only by health and safety / security concerns). All cable connected devices will operate with standards-based communication protocols which will lead to convergence in cable types.

9PoE and Low voltage DC devices will grow in demand - DC convergence

will lead to single source devices which

can be powered by the network and the Sun, Wind and other alternative energy sources.

10 If we learn from IT’s great examples, human skills will

become the most valued element in the solution delivery chain.

With focused efforts, the AV industry will successfully tide over this wave of challenges and embrace its exciting future. That one, I am sure about.

Randy Lemke, Executive Director & CEO of InfoComm International recently made a comment on my LinkedIn Blog. He said “looking outside raises the question if another industry (IT is most usually considered) is going to kill AV instead of AV dying. Or, will IT facilitate a whole new opportunity for AV? There is no doubt that enterprise IT departments are the current and future buyers of AV. Because we are on IT’s network and AV departments and budgets are now within IT, the gatekeeper has changed. Will enterprise IT also become a competitor as in a “do-it yourself” model? No doubt this will happen. Finally, will IT VARS get into the AV business? and the answer is Yes, some will! In all of these variations on IT, the AV distribution channel needs to focus on communication and not just on boxes. It will need to maintain its relationships with facilities departments as acoustics, sightlines and other room considerations will remain important. The end result of the IT competition question is to be determined, but the hopeful scenario is that the growing markets will more than make up for the AV work that IT does. Blending Architecture & AestheticsControl Systems, in an AVSI domain, have long been considered just a mix of hardware and software solutions to monitor different functionalities of a given space. However, blending architecture and aesthetics has added a new ‘CUE’ to the industry. Czech manufacturer CUE Systems a.s. thus gave this industry segment a new dimension. Playing a critical role in its global cause is Cue Systems Asia Pte Ltd. SIA speaks to Andy Ng, managing director of the Asian enterprise. Excerpts:

SIA: Tell us about CUE System Global and Asia-Pacific. Its genesis and evolution through the decades…

Andy: CUE a.s., was founded in 1991 as system integrators, and simultaneously began R&D and manufacturing Show Control Systems designed for exhibits and show automation. We shifted our focus in 1993 to complete integrated control systems for Boardroom, Home automation etc. Making regular strides in innovation CUE came up with IP based control system in 2000. By 2007, we decided to develop new technology framework and programming tools that are designed for future rather than just upgrade old or existing technology.

It was a bold step for us as it meant dropping the ‘old’ but successfully working technology and pursue newer frontiers. Working assiduously we launched in April 2010 our new software CUE Visual Composer (CVC) based on our new CUE’s XPL2 technology that is much more powerful and offers most state of the art features available to new PC/IT devices today.

SIA: Relatively young enterprise that CUE is, and taking a unique geographic positioning, how has it impacted the market?

Andy: Being young always has its advantages. We have tried all along to take advantage of our youth, without being too reckless. Our approach to the market has been typically European - Each step we take aims at giving the best to our consumer. With the launch of our new software we changed how control system user interface should be like. One of its many features is multi-language capability. AVSIs no longer need to settle with just one language; they can work with any number of languages, instantaneously. This feature is extremely good for hospitality industry where dealing with travelers of diverse languages is indispensable.

SIA: CUE System added the ‘beauty’ tag to control/touch panel business. What

exactly do you mean by that?

Andy: Touchpanels are notionally light plastic panels that feel like toys. At CUE, we make CUEnuim panels with solid wooden and stainless steel frames that render the panels classic and elegant, more like an art work than a mere piece of plastic. More, no machinery; they are hand-made to exquisiteness. The new CUEnuim2 is made from aluminum with a minimalist look, simple and elegant. Our new CVC software allows our programmers to add Sliders, Knob, Analogue Clock objects into the User Interface to create a clean looking UI offering full functionality of a control system with less buttons.

SIA: How has it contributed to your business? any perceptible notations?

Andy: Our revenues have been growing steadily since we began in Asia in 2003. We have been receiving very positive feedback for our artistic finished panels as well as our new software.

SIA: What according to you is the biggest technology breakthrough that CUE had brought to industry? How has it redefined the user experience?

Andy: Our new software CVC with XPL2 technology is designed with the next 20 years of control system evolution in mind. As explained above, it comes with a breakthrough user interface of new objects like Sliders, Knobs etc. that not only allow programmers to develop sophisticated projects but also makes it easy for the clients to use. The user now can do with just 3 to 4 knobs control what would have required over 20 buttons in the old system. Our new WebGUI allows our dealers to develop agnostic applications that will run across iPad/iPhone, Andriod, PC, Symbian etc. without needing the end users to install additional software. Controls can be accessed directly via their browser like safari, chrome, IE etc.

SIA: What according to you is the biggest market driver for AVSI industry today?

Andy: For me, the biggest market factor is always cost and technology. One who can offer the best technology with lowest cost will lead the show. The trade-off here, however, is good technology always comes with higher development and production cost. That’s why at CUE, we strongly believe in staying lean in our operations without compromising on technology.

SIA: How does CUE look at Asia markets, and particularly India? What strengths and / or weaknesses does it see in Indian AVSI industry?

Andy: Everybody across most industries looks at Asia in the same way today. It is host to two countries with the biggest appetite- India and China. They are relatively less affected by slowdowns, and are great resources of all kinds.

For India, the market is still growing. The demands are different, and the requirement is varied. It’s ever-changing. The strength of AV industry today is its ability to satiate the customer at different levels- levels of pricing, quality, totality of solutions etc. To me, the number of levels will drop over a period of time and a few features will form the basis for decision making.

India has time and again displayed extreme ability to absorb mega volumes and be hungry for more, even during testing times. This I believe is the strongest USP of Indian AVSI market.

SIA: Where do you see CUE System going forward in the next five years?

Andy: CUE has a long way to go. In the next five years, we will focus on doing more training and support for the India market. Without appropriate training it will not be possible for a dealer to sell and implement CUE. For the rest of Asia, we successfully executed the strategy and we plan to do the same in India as well.

Advantage AMX, Middle EastControl systems and automation giant AMX has been one of the major drivers of AVSI industry globally, and enjoys a dominant stake in the Middle East markets as well with some of the most ambitious projects on the globe to its credit. SIA caught up with the AMX VP of International Marketing Niclas Brattberg to know what it is up to in the region. Excerpts:

SIA: How have the Middle East markets been shaping up over the last few years? And, particularly, for AMX?

Niclas: It’s been constantly growing, and more so for AMX. Hospitality, education, residential (palaces and villas), multi-dwelling units, healthcare and even fancy sporting domains like yachting all have AMX as their best solution provider. Some of the biggest hotels in the Middle East – say Emirates Palace, Burj Al Arab and Armani Hotel, all 7-star hotels – and some of the best known universities in the region have all been done by AMX in association with its regional partners. So, practically every single vertical market segment of AMX in the region has been significantly growing year over year in the region.

SIA: Would you please quantify the growth year on year or market wise?

Niclas: It’s a bit difficult in that some years have shown exceedingly high growth owing to the scale of the projects which were really big while some had moderate growth. Holistically, the last few years provided intense business activity for AMX with some very big projects happening simultaneously.

SIA: Which particular market in the Middle East has been more promising or challenging?

Niclas: While there have been a few exceptions from some markets, the whole ME market been generically a high growth region. Markets like UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar which had been traditionally big and active continue to do so with some of the most ambitious projects shaping up in the last few years. The other markets though a little inconsistent have shown some strong potential for future growth which is again a big plus.

Infrastructure projects like the public transport system in Dubai, oil and energy installations, government security installations like police have been big boosters for growth for many AVSI players, particularly AMX.

SIA: How about the impact of the economic crisis in Dubai on the fortunes of AVSI and AMX?

Niclas: While Dubai, as an individual Emirate suffered a setback, it is practically part of the UAE which, as a country, holistically has been a healthy market. The hospitality and academic projects, besides the infrastructure, that had been coming up in different parts of the market play testimony to the vibrancy. While some projects in Dubai got delayed due to the crisis, some other projects in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere had been pushed forward. More, that Dubai is being helped financially by Abu Dhabi, we can probably say a shift in investment but there is no perceptible impact per se.

SIA: What AMX technologies you believe has been driving the AVSI market in the region?

Niclas: The traditional touch panel and control system technologies continue to reign high. Besides, the infrastructural fibre optics, twisted pair switching, and EBX and PDX have also been driving it from hardware front. The EBX is a fascinating product that packages seven different products in one box. On the software front, we have a new backbone platform called Resource Management Suite (RMS) which, in combination with twisted pair switching and fibre optic network, helps manage practically every operation and resource in an enterprise. The digital signage and IPTV solutions have also been driving the market significantly.

SIA: Where do you see the AVSI market in the Middle East region heading in the next five years?

Niclas: The markets had been growing and continue to grow; we are very positive about the growth rate being consistent, if not better in the years to come. Entrepreneurs have been enthusiastic about not only building

mega projects but also using the latest high-end technologies which results in continued R&D, and provides for innovation.

SIA: What challenges you think the region presents you with?

Niclas: I don’t see the challenges here as any different from those elsewhere. It looks much the same. Having said that, we also see this market as one of the most advanced, and thus demanding the latest and the greatest technology with more horsepower which presents the solution providers with both challenge and opportunity.

They are very tight on their timelines and budgets too which puts them on par with any other market.

What is probably more exciting is that the region is pretty open in terms of infrastructure and constructions. Quite unlike Europe or Asia where install environments have a lot of legacy structures, often making the installs very challenging, here infrastructure is laid before the structures are built, providing AVSIs to make their best pitch.

SIA: AMX has been an active participant in AV education promotion programmes in Asia. How about in the Middle East?

Niclas: We are trying to participate as much as we can in association with various organizations. It is in our interest to ensure that our channel partners are trained and certified in different AV technologies.

SIA: How do you see the InfoComm MEA exhibition contributing to the cause of the industry?

Niclas: It’s really good to have a show like this in the region; it does help a lot. However, we strongly feel it can hope to reap bigger benefits if it can do it independently. Being part of such a large event as GITEX, it is almost lost because of the very positioning. More, so many controls relating to access and visitor foot falls. So, we would rather like it to be independent.

Offering Unique and Compelling Presentation PossibilitiesDataton recently released its much anticipated version 5 of its WATCHOUT solution. According to Mike Fahl, Chief Software Architect and a founder of Dataton, the core idea behind WATCHOUT is to find the shortest path from the creative mind of the producer up onto the screen, removing as much clutter in between as possible. This principle still holds true to the present day as Mike takes time out to talk to SIA about the company’s vision and success.

SIA: Can you start off with a little history about Dataton’s WATCHOUT. When was it born? Why was it born? How was it born?

Mike: While various ideas behind WATCHOUT had been percolating for a while, it all really came together mid 1999. We had been involved with multi-screen presentations for many years, using a variety of technologies along the way. However, as the number and complexity of all the gear required to make such presentations grew, I saw that this was just getting way too complicated for the kind of creative users we’re catering for. Back then, you had to use numerous pieces to create such presentations. Slide projectors, Betacam and laserdisc players, PowerPoint computers, vision mixers, video switchers, routers and projectors. On top of this, an elaborate control system talking to all those devices. And, finally, our TRAX software that allowed you to program and control the whole rig using a timeline-based user interface.

And then we haven’t even began to talk about how the actual content was being produced. Clearly, this wasn’t a sustainable creative business model. Right around that time, computer technology reached an interesting tipping point. While previously mainly being used to control the presentation, computers were now getting powerful enough to handle the presentation on their own. This insight allowed us to do away with the vast majority of equipment previously being required. In a nutshell, you may say that my core idea behind WATCHOUT was to find the shortest path from the creative mind of the producer up onto the screen, removing as much clutter in between as possible.

SIA: Can you provide us with an outline of your background that led you into creating WATCHOUT?

Mike: I’ve been heavily involved in multi-screen production and presentations

for over 30 years now. Beginning with slide projector based “multi image”, going though various other technologies along the way, we’ve built up a thorough understanding of what it means to create such large-scale presentations. Keep in mind that working with a screen that may be too large to see from any one vantage point (or perhaps even multiple screen areas working together) is radically different from producing for film or television. The ability to have several parallel story-lines or focus areas, augmenting and complementing each other, is a unique aspect of this medium.

Thus, combining an understanding of the production and presentation processes with the latest in computer hardware and software led to the ideas behind WATCHOUT. While the basics were part of the product from its inception, a huge number of new creative capabilities have been added over time, incorporating much of the real-world experience we’ve gathered over the years, as well as the valuable feedback and ideas coming from our producers, systems integrators and other partners.

SIA: What were the key considerations that Dataton had to take into account for WATCHOUT version 5?

Mike: WATCHOUT is unique compared to other production tools in its immediacy. You make a change, hit a command, and it appears on screen right away. Since all content is being rendered in real time, there’s really no “rendering time” involved. This brings many advantages compared to traditional production workflows, such as film and television. In WATCHOUT 5 we tried to push this boundary even further, by allowing the user to incorporate various kinds of content that can change even during the presentation. Take a picture with your iPhone and have it appear on screen immediately. Or pull a news feed from CNN right into your presentation. The Dynamic Image Server is one example

on how this can be handled, and we have more such capabilities in the pipeline for upcoming versions.

Another area where WATCHOUT shines, again due to its real time rendering, is in creating truly interactive presentations. In WATCHOUT 5 we took this into a new dimension by allowing the user to control the positioning of objects in 3D space. For instance, using a motion sensor, the user can now make objects in a presentation follow a speaker (or visitor) around. Or use industry standard interfaces such as MIDI, DMX512 or TCP/IP to tie virtually any aspect of the user’s WATCHOUT presentation to a musical instrument, lighting console or other computer systems.

SIA: Which features proved to be a challenge to implement within WATCHOUT version 5? How was it overcome?

Mike: 3D, as mentioned above, was another focus area of WATCHOUT 5. While there’s been a lot of talk around 3D television and movie theaters over the past couple of years, this technology has generally been prohibitively time-consuming or expensive to use in other areas. Again due to the real-time rendering nature of WATCHOUT, we were able to overcome many of these thresholds by making WATCHOUT do the heavy lifting. Since we were already using powerful 3D graphics hardware, it was mostly a matter of “connecting the dots”. So in WATCHOUT 5 you can now produce stereoscopic content almost as easily as you can produce regular presentations. Granted, there’s some more expensive hardware involved to screen the result, and we still have to live with those funny-looking goggles. But from a production point of view, it’s really not that different from a traditional 2D WATCHOUT production. Just designate the right/left eye projectors in the Stage window, and set the “Eye Distance” parameter in Preferences, and you’re good to go.

Page 81: Systems Integration Asia Dec & Jan 2012

81Systems Integration Asia December - January 2012 VOICE BOX

In order to properly support 3D, we had to add depth control of all objects, allowing them to move towards or away from the viewer, as well as rotate freely in 3D space. This essentially meant incorporating some of the capabilities found in complex 3D applications, such as Maya and 3D Studio MAX, right into WATCHOUT. While doing so isn’t that complicated from a technical point of view, the real challenge we faced was how to do this without bringing in all the user interface complexity of such high-end 3D applications. Most of our users are firmly rooted in the 2D mentality associated with tools such as Final Cut, Photoshop or Web design. Hence, we wanted to stay compatible with this 2D mindset while still adding the essentials of 3D. We believe that we’ve come up with a way to handle this that makes sense for our customers, while still giving them the new capabilities that they want in this area.

SIA: Worldwide, has the WATCHOUT solution seen a change in how and where it is being used? Can you give us examples of unique uses of WATCHOUT and do you see this trend continuing?

Mike: Since we introduced WATCHOUT 5, we’ve seen a number of very interesting shifts in how it’s being used. Sure, it’s still often used to create that traditional “three projector, edge-blended, wide screen look”. But more and more of our customers are taking advantage of the interactive capabilities now available, thereby creating unique and engaging visitor experiences. Using various clever sensor arrangements, such as the Kinect technology from Microsoft or multi-touch panels such as the Apple iPad, you can now engage your audience in entirely new ways. We’re seeing a lot of activities in this area across the board. And we’ve just started down this path, so there’s plenty more coming here.

Another change that we have observed is the adoption of WATCHOUT in areas where it was previously just too expensive. Due to the progress of Moore’s law, computers have become not just powerful enough to do these kinds of things, but in many cases actually “overqualified”. In WATCHOUT 5 we tap into this potential in a number of ways by offering new creative capabilities, as have already mentioned. However, we’re also drawing on this increased power by allowing the user to drive multiple displays or projectors from a single computer. As a matter of fact, users can drive up to six channels from a single WATCHOUT computer, using a single software license. Not only does this dramatically reduce the cost of WATCHOUT itself, but also the cost of all associated computer hardware, wiring, add-ons (such as live video capture cards), power consumption, etc. The combined cost reductions created

by this single change to the product suddenly makes WATCHOUT extremely competitive in areas where it was previously way out of reach. Hence, we’re seeing entirely new groups of users getting on board, and using WATCHOUT in places where it previously didn’t really fit in.

SIA: What factors does Dataton think will continue to provide challenges and opportunities for the WATCHOUT software?

Mike: Some of the challenges and opportunities actually stem from the same source. Since WATCHOUT is just software, you also need computer hardware to run it. The fact that we use standard PC hardware has blessed us with a dramatic increase in capabilities, raw performance and configuration options at a very reasonable cost. However, this also brings with it many challenges when it comes to building and configuring well performing systems. Fortunately, our worldwide network of partners and resellers do an excellent job in helping our users out in this area.

Another area where I think we could do more to face up to the challenges is in educating our user base. While the basic operation of WATCHOUT is still as simple as it was when the product was first introduced, we have added a lot of very powerful creative capabilities over the years. What we’ve found is that in many cases, our users are actually quite unaware of what’s now actually possible to do. So while we’ll certainly keep pushing the envelope on the technology side of things, I think we need to do a better job of getting the word out about what WATCHOUT is actually capable of doing already. This is probably one of the greatest commercial challenges we face today, but also one of the greatest opportunities if we can manage it well. And we do have a couple of new initiatives in this area that I believe will allow us to do a better job here.

SIA: What are Dataton’s views with regards to Asia – is it a key market? How much of the business does Asia contribute in terms of percentages? Do you see this market growing? What installation in the region are you most proud of?

Mike: Asia has in many ways been a true success story from our point of view. It’s a very different market from other areas we have traditionally worked in, but also has opportunities that you rarely find elsewhere in the world today. Hence, we’ve seen Asia grow to have a very significant share of our worldwide market, and there seem to be no end to this growth. Simply because of the huge population in this part of the world, I think the kind of presentations you can use WATCHOUT for is a good fit, since

WATCHOUT is often used when you want to “impress a lot of people”.

The most notable example of how this can play out was the World Expo in Shanghai last year. This was easily the single largest WATCHOUT concentration on the planet, ever. WATCHOUT was used everywhere, from single displays, through multi display clusters, and all the way up to the huge presentations done in many of the pavilions. Just considering the sheer number of visitors flowing though Expo every single day, you really need something with the visual impact and production capabilities of WATCHOUT to pull it off. Combine this with the easy way in which WATCHOUT systems can be managed and updated via computer networks, and you have the recipe of success that we came to witness.

To further strengthen our partnership with our users in Asia, we’re currently working on localized versions of the software as well as its documentation and training material. While the Asian markets are huge and seemingly wide open, the language and general cultural barriers are real, and need to be accounted for in order to keep moving forward. And, working with our Asian partners, we’re taking the steps necessary here.

SIA: What is your future vision for WATCHOUT and Dataton?

Mike: In one sense, I think the answer to that question is very simple. Over the past 30 years, we’ve been working relentlessly to provide audiovisual production and presentation products that you can use to get you message across to visitors, customers, and humans in general in unique and compelling ways. While you can think of it as a kind of customizable communication medium for groups of people, it’s also more and more being used on an individual basis. Case in point being our PICKUP audio guide, which is indeed very personal to use. Here we’re also working on new things in WATCHOUT that, combined with existing and yet-to-be-announced interactive capabilities, will broaden the applicability in the individual and small groups end of the spectrum.

We’re also seeing new application areas open up due to the increasing affordability of display technologies ranging from small projectors all the way up to LED walls. As the display technologies evolve and find their way into new areas, we’ll continue making sure that WATCHOUT is right there, fulfilling our vision and helping our users succeed.
