MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On the cover of this issue, we laud the effort of two men: Dr. Angel Amante and Dr. Brian Cabral. Through their unending passion for the craft and with their selfless devotion to the nation, they are our this quarter’s Fundraising Champions, as they were able to secure a donation that will launch the Organ and Tissue Donation Service.

Every year, numerous Filipinos in need of a transplant die while waiting to procure an organ. By launching the Organ and Tissue Donation Service, they hope to hone a culture in the hospital and in the country that inspires and educates more families to become organ donors, and give those who are in need another chance at life.

With that, of course, this effort would not be possible without the generosity of the donors themselves, Eduardo M. Cojuangco, Jr. and Ramon

S. Ang had believed in their vision, and therefore made possible its fruition. Earlier in May this year, we are proud to share that we have already inaugurated the Eduardo M. Cojuangco, Jr. and Ramon S. Ang Center for Organ Transplantation. We look forward to the opportunities that this new venture will offer.

In other news, this year also marks the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc.’s 5th anniversary. In view of this, the Resource Development Group was able to solicit artworks from the country’s top contemporary artists, and the works will be auctioned at the Leon Gallery this September 2017. The Leon Gallery will waive their consignment fees for the fundraiser, of which we are incredibly thankful for. Their kindness will reach numerous patients.

We continue to be thankful for the blessings that we have received, and proceed in our jouney to pay it forward and aid those who need it the most.

Arnel, a former tricycle driver, first noticed the lump on his throat. He attended another private hospital to get it checked, and they informed him they needed to do a biopsy. Looking to seek a second opinion, Arnel’s neighbor, who was a patient at St. Luke’s

hospital, advised him to go to the Social Services Department of St. Luke’s hospital. He was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma cancer. Arnel had to be operated on to remove his tonsils, and then they proceeded with the chemotherapy. His first cycle, with six sessions had just finished at the hospital. “Nagpapasalamat ako dahil gumanda and aking kalusugan. Nawala ang bukol sa katawan ko, pero may kaunti pang naiwan.”

St. Luke’s Foundation and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office sponsored his chemotherapy. His treatment has been effective after the five sessions. The cancer cells have been contained in his tonsil area.A

eople are dying while waiting for an organ,” says Dr. Angel Amante, on the culture of organ transplant services in the Philippines. Everyday, Filipinos suffer or die needlessly waiting for an organ that may never come. Common diseases like diabetes and hypertension lead to more chronic kidney disease, renal failure, as well as fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. The demand for organ donors is as urgent as ever, as nearly 12,000 Filipinos are diagnosed with end-stage renal disease each year. Half of them will die within six months without the benefit of treatment. Because our current system relies heavily on organs from living donors, we will never actually be adequate in meeting this demand.

But in efforts to change this, the Organ and Tissue Donation Service (OTDS) hopes to emphasize Deceased Organ Donation, and provide excellent organ yield from deceased donors. A multi-organ donor can provide several solid organs to help relieve the organ shortage. More importantly, outcomes of

deceased organ transplantation parallel to those of live donor transplants provide significantly longer patient survival compared to dialysis.

With efforts spearheded by Dr. Angel Amante and Dr. Brian Cabral, the OTDS will roll out this year, with the help of private donors Eduardo M. Cojuangco, Jr. and Ramon S. Ang.

With a solid vision of changing a culture, and encouraging deceased organ and tissue donation and transplantation in the Philippines, they hope to give more Filipinos in need the chance to live longer. “We’re very afraid of getting donations from friends or relatives, when in fact it’s really not that dangerous to donate, say,

a kidney,” says Dr. Cabral. “But there is still that cultural disparity amongst us, which makes deceased donation a really viable option. The only reason it hasn’t taken off is also cultural: because people don’t want to give parts of their loved ones away,” says Dr. Cabral.

Dr. Amante adds, “The goal of this request for deceased donation is to let the family of the person who passed away know that their loved one can live on through other people. If we could create that culture in this hospital, it could serve as a paradigm for other hospitals. It’s good to empower people who believe that this is the solution to this problem.” C

The program is geared towards training and generating resources for deceased organ collection, which encourages families of deceased patients to donate their loved one’s organs in order to give others who are struggling a new chance at life. In turn, this program hopes to change people’s mindsets about organ donation, creating a new culture that might spare the lives of countless Filipinos.

St. Luke’s Medical Center, in partnership with the Sagip-Bayan Foundation and the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc., held a medical mission in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte last February 22-25 using state-of-the-art surgical techniques.

The mission was one of the key activities of the local fiesta of Laoag, where a team of highly skilled doctors from St. Luke’s, through the invitation of Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas and Vice Mayor Michael V. Fariñas, provided specialized minimally invasive surgery procedures on local patients.

The pioneering medical mission was spearheaded by St. Luke’s Head of the Institute of Surgery and Vice President of Sagip-Bayan Dr. Menandro Siozon and the Head of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery Dr. Jeffrey Domino.

The team performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair, ovarian cystectomy, myomectomy and hysterectomy

using the facilities of the Laoag City General Hospital courtesy of its Medical Director Dr. Francis Dacuycuy.
