Sweetwater Center for the Arts will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2010! Sweetwater began as a grass-roots effort developed by community residents. It offered a small number of classes in the fine arts and crafts for residents in the area west of Pittsburgh. After receiving nonprofit and certified teaching institute status, Sweetwater began operating as a full-service arts education facility in 1975. In 1987, the Center moved from a small Victorian house into its current space in the old Sewickley Post Office building. Today, Sweetwater serves more than 11,000 individuals each year through a wide array of classes, outreach programs, scholarship opportunities, exhibitions, and cultural experiences.

Sweetwater will host a number of events to celebrate its 35th anniversary. We hope you will join us!

Cacophony: german art Between the wars - lE01 Ages 16 & upThis lecture will focus on the energetic dissonance and competing forces that shaped German art between the two world wars: the era of massive inflation, unemployment and grinding poverty AND cultural efflorescence in a sophisticated urban culture that produced some of the richest artistic expression of the twentieth century. Nihilistic visions competed with soaring optimism, sometimes in the work of single artists. We will trace the melee of this cultural landscape through the various movements and schools that give it shape -- Expressionism, Neue Sachlichkeit, Dada, and the Bauhaus. Looking at paintings, but also collage and photomontage, film, architecture and the decorative arts, we will attempt to trace the outlines of this contradictory historical moment that can best be described, through its ardent productivity, as cacophony.

Join Dr. Gretchen Bender of the University of Pittsburgh’s History of Art and Architecture Department for an informal lecture followed by discussion. light hors ‘doeuvres and refreshments will be served. wordsmith: The New from the old - lE02 Ages 16 & upSomewhere in the back of your mind, a still, small voice tries to get your attention. It wants to remind you that the story you started a month, a year, a decade ago and left in the corner of your closet, basement, attic wants your undivided attention. It deserves your undivided attention. Find it. Release it. Bring it to a class whose purpose is to help you recall it, polish it, prepare it for performance, publication, another long vacation in a dark corner of your closet.

You must have completed a short story and be willing to share it with other like minded but neglectful writers. By the end of the class, you will have refined your skill and been reminded why you wanted to tell that story in the first place. Want to play?

lecture - Cacophony: german art Between the wars Ages 16 & upFriday, January 29, 6:00-8:00 p.m. This lecture will focus on the energetic dissonance and competing forces that shaped German art between the two world wars: the era of massive inflation, unemployment and grinding poverty AND cultural efflorescence in a sophisticated urban culture that produced some of the richest artistic expression of the twentieth century.

The 10% early registration discount does not apply to this class.

secondhand: works by Cheron urbanek March & April, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.Reception: Friday, March 5, 7:00-9:00 p.m.This is an exhibition of one local girl’s international explorations and her attempt to transpire these emotions, recollections, and experiences to the public in two-dimensional glimpses. These photographs and works illustrate one artist’s valued experiences that a viewer can only interpret from a secondhand stand point. Each interaction between person and environment is automatically individualistic whether it is captured in a camera or summarized by pencils and pastels. Viewers are asked to allow this exhibition to conjure up their own experiences, reactions, and emotions so that they can offer a secondhand experience to another person in our ever globalizing world. Secondhand offers an intriguing assembly of artwork that not only exhibits specific experiences but also offers to ignite experience for its viewers.
