About two-and-one-half miles after going under the Interstate 79 overpass, the Sewickley Country Inn will be on the right, followed shortly by two stoplights. Turn right at the 2nd stoplight onto Broad Street. Sweetwater is on the right in the Old Post Office Building.

Sweetwater Center for the Arts will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2010! Sweetwater began as a grass-roots effort developed by community residents. It offered a small number of classes in the fine arts and crafts for residents in the area west of Pittsburgh. After receiving nonprofit and certified teaching institute status, Sweetwater began operating as a full-service arts education facility in 1975. In 1987, the Center moved from a small Victorian house into its current space in the old Sewickley Post Office building. Today, Sweetwater serves more than 11,000 individuals each year through a wide array of classes, outreach programs, scholarship opportunities, exhibitions, and cultural experiences.

Sweetwater will host a number of events to celebrate its 35th anniversary. We hope you will join us!

Instruction will be given on modeling technique, propor-tion and the general structure of the human head. The particular qualities and character of the sitter will also be discussed. acrylic & Mixed Media Painting - Pa08 Ages 16 & upAcrylic paint is arguably one of the most versatile and enjoyable mediums available today, as it has its own unique blend of working and finished characteristics. This class will take an experimental approach to acrylic painting as we learn the many versatile functions of which acrylic paint is capable. We’ll learn how to create different textures using various tools, as well as how to use ink, charcoal, crayons and colored pencils to emphasize details of our paintings. impressionistic Knife Painting in oils - Pa02 Ages 16 & upThis class is for the artist who wants to loosen up and put emotion into their work. Learn Joyce’s own impressionistic style and original technique of knife painting based on the generous application of buttery oils and their manipulation through rapid addition and subtraction of paint using knives and other tools. The result is vibrant color, boldness of surface and the impression of quick movement. Complementary contrast, rhythm and unity in painting will be discussed. Demonstration as well as individual instruction will be given. Subject matter will be initially provided by the instructor and then left to the individual preference of each student. Painting with Water Based oil Paint - Pa07 Ages 16 & upAre you an artist who is concerned about the health risks related to painting with oil paints and solvents such as turpentine? Are you look-ing for a medium that can be cleaned with water? If you would like to translate your techniques into a “safer” medium, or are someone who would simply enjoy learning painting techniques in a new medium, this is the class for you. This class provides an introduction to the prop-erties and techniques of water based oil painting. We will cover: preparing a surface , mixing colors, creating washes, painting “alla prima” and glazing techniques. Students may choose to paint from photographs or still life objects brought to class. Pastel Painting - Pa04 Ages 16 & upWorking from still life as well as the model, we will explore various techniques using soft pastels that will make your paintings sing. Finish the class with a large scale collage that will excite all your senses. Beginning drawing - dR01 Ages 16 & upLearn the fundamentals of drawing that are the basis for all types of art. This beginner level class covers proportions and measuring, basic perspective, gesture drawing and tonal (shaded) drawing. We will focus on drawing from a still life using black and white pencil and char-coal. Calligraphy - TC14 Ages 16 & upLearn how to produce beautiful calligraphy in this step-by-step class. The Italic Hand Style will be demonstrated and practiced, from the first type of stroke to elegant embellishments. After mastering the technique, students will design a final, frameable calligraphic work that will make a beautiful wall-hanging or gift. Returning students are welcome! open drawing studio with live Model - dR02 Ages 16 & upThis is an uninstructed open studio session working from the nude model. Experience working from the model is not required; however, no instruction will be provided. Participants are free to work in any medium they desire. During each session, the model will do at least one 20 minute session of gesture poses and multiple 20 to 40 minute poses as determined by the participants’ interests. Props and costumes may also be used if there is interest. Marie Leone, Director of Fine Arts at the Community College of Beaver County and artist local to Sewickley, will be the moderator of these sessions. Matting & Framing Techniques - dR03 Ages 16 & upDo you have a print that you want to frame? Do you love the look of professionally framed artwork, but hate the price? In this introductory work-shop, students will learn the fundamentals of basic mat cutting and picture framing for home or professional presentation. You will receive a “hands on” education on how to properly cut mats, mount art and assemble a frame. Common questions about framing will be addressed such as framing standards, matting/framing design and selection, and conservation framing. You will learn a single mat, double mat, floating mat and a surprise contemporary alternative. By the end of class, students will learn how to get that professional look and pay half the price! Two professional mat cutting tools will be made available; however, students are encouraged to bring their own if available. Metalsmithing - TC01, TC02 Ages 16 & upStudents will be taught basic metal forming techniques as well as stone setting and design. Two projects will be completed: first, a simple hammered cuff bracelet with a stone setting; then a more intricate bracelet of the artist’s own design. The class will be able to study several of the artist’s own pieces, some of which have won recognition for unique design quality. students will be taught how to order metal on the first day of class.

Copper enameling for Beginners - TC12 Ages 16 & upExperiment with color and texture in this introductory course to enameling, the ancient art of fusing glass to metal. Students will briefly explore the history and science of enameling before preparing their own copper test pieces, which can be fashioned into earrings, pendants, or charms. We will experiment with opaque colors while learning stenciling and sgraffito techniques and then experiment with transparent colors and the addition of texture with basse taille and glass frit. Both kiln firing and torch firing methods will be used. students should bring a #2 or a #3 file and a dust mask with them to class. Basic Black & White Photography - PH01 Ages 16 & upThis is a fun and informative course for the beginning photographer. Learn to develop film in the black-and-white medium. Students will leave this course knowing how to use their camera effectively, process film and develop their own prints. Material fee for this class covers chemicals used during the class time only. Due to time limitations, class time is primarily dedicated to demonstration with some hands on work. Students should expect to spend time in the darkroom outside of class in order to process film and prints. There will be an additional hourly charges for time spent in the darkroom outside of class. World of Jewelry - TC03 Ages 16 & upExplore a wide variety of jewelry making techniques in this fun survey class. You’ll learn beading, bead stitching, wire wrapping and basic metal forming. Students will focus on a different skill each week, starting with crimping for beading. Projects include a peyote stitched bracelet, wire wrapped earrings and pendant, and much more. PMC for Beginners - TC04 Ages 16 & upIt’s amazing, but true: Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a form of fine silver that is malleable and worked like a water-based clay but that fires to pure silver with a kiln or torch. Sample a few techniques in this easy, low-pressure beginner’s class. Students will create a simple but lovely bypass ring and small charms, pendants, or earrings—as many pieces as time allows. Everyone can work at his/her own pace. The pieces will be kiln-fired, either during class for students to take home, or after class for pickup at Sweetwater. No experience necessary. This course traces the historical development of weaving from the simplest looms to contemporary table jack looms and familiarizes students with structure and use of equipment. Children’s Painting - CH01 Ages 6 - 10This unique painting class captures Picasso’s philosophy that “everyone is an artist”. Budding artists are encouraged to try new things, be inspired by the world’s greatest artists, and learn various techniques and media. Each week we will discover the art and history of various artists from around the world including Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keefe, Jasper Johns, and Joan Miro. Students will have the freedom to explore a variety of painting mediums including watercolors, acrylics, tempera, fresco and much more! As we learn from the masters of painting, the foundations of color theory, color mixing, and the principles and elements of design will be emphasized to promote a personal artistic growth. students will decide on the subject matter of their art and are strongly encouraged to bring photographs and imagery they enjoy, including landscapes, portraits, and books. students should bring a sketchbook to class each week to develop their own original ideas. sweetwater sampler - CH03 Ages 6 - 10This course will focus on two fine art mediums; sculpture and painting. Students will practice 3 weeks of painting and 3 weeks of sculpture. This course will focus on the fundamentals of both mediums and will result in 2 sculpture projects and 2 painting projects. The sculpture lessons will involve the art concepts in bas relief, high relief and low relief and the other, sculpture in the round. Students will apply their understanding of these lessons in 2 separate artworks. The painting lessons will be “observational” painting (painting what you see)of one still life and one portrait painting. It is encouraged, but not necessary to bring any ideas of that the student would like to design. Paper Kachina dolls - CH15 Ages 6 - 10The original Kachina dolls were carved from wood by the native American Hopi artists, but we will create our own 3D version of the dolls using paper. We’ll study the culture of the Hopi, and learn the significance of the dolls. sCouT WoRKsHoPs Sweetwater can help you earn badges in a variety of studio art practices – everything from drawing and ceramics to making art to wear! Workshops start at $120 for up to 10 children, with a $12 fee for each additional child. There may be additional fees for materials. Troop leaders should call 412-741-4405 for scheduling and details, or visit www.sweetwaterartcenter.org/scoutbadges.asp.

PRe-sCHool Field TRiPsSweetwater offers field trips for area pre-schools. This is a great opportunity for young children to be exposed to the world of art through their local art center. Field trips include a workshop with a Sweetwater instructor and a tour of the Center. Field trips are $5.00 per child. Call 412-741-4405 for more information.

PRiVaTe aRT lessons Private art lessons are available for Sweetwater members only (ages 6-adult) in a variety of art media. Private art lessons are $50/hour, and each lesson has a 1 ½ hour minimum. Receive a discounted rate of $35/hour when you register for a total of 6 or more hours at one time. There may be additional fees for materials. Full payment must accompany registration. In the event that the student must cancel a scheduled lesson, he/she should notify the office by calling 412-741-4405. Student cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance in order to receive a make-up lesson. Scheduled lessons cancelled by the instructor or by Sweetwater will be rescheduled. RenTals Facility Rentals Sweetwater’s Community Room is available to rent for parties and events. Whether you are planning a bridal shower, an anniversary celebration or a fundraiser, Sweetwater can offer the perfect venue. All community room rentals include the use of our kitchen. studio RentalsIndividuals may rent Sweetwater’s ceramics and darkroom studios whenever the schedule permits. Sweetwater does not take reservations for studio rentals; renters are encouraged to call Sweetwater at 412-741-4405 prior to coming in order to check the studio availability. sweetwater is the perfect place for birthday parties! We supply the space, the kitchen and the ENTERTAINMENT! Choose between a Beading or Cooking theme, or design your

own! Parties are “hosted” by veteran instructors who are sure to keep your party-goers amused.Parties may include up to 15 children (additional fee for each child over the limit--up to 20 children max). Each party will last two hours and will allow approximately 45 minutes for opening presents and refreshments. Parents provide refreshments, decorations, set-up and clean-up.

Create-a-Bear (Any age)

Price includes up to 10 children; each additional child is $15. Children will have a blast creating, stuffing and personalizing their very own teddy bear to take home during this special birthday party. Each child will be given a t-shirt for their bear to decorate using markers, sequins, glitter and more.

Make-Your-own-Theme (Any age)

Price includes up to 15 children; each additional child is $10. We want to make your child’s birthday special with a theme all their own. If trucks, dinosaurs, butterflies, animals, princesses or any other theme excites them, we can design an art project they will love. You may choose projects from most of our pre-school or children’s classes. Parties are “hosted” by our veteran instructors.

Beading Birthday (Ages 6 & up)with “The Bead Lady,” Kathy Shomo

Price includes up to 10 children; each additional child is $10. Using beautiful beads from all over the world, children will design two projects of their choice: necklaces, bracelets, ankle bracelets, key chains, backpack dangles, zipper pulls, or sun catchers. Kathy Shomo, also known as “The Bead Lady” is the author of Anyone Can Bead! Easy techniques for Making Jewelry. Choosing this fun-filled party guarantees smiles!

Cooking Birthday (Any age)

Price: $275/Members $325/Non-Members 12 child maximumKids will have a great time making creative and delicious dishes. Your child may choose from a variety of themes including holiday, fiesta, delectable desserts and more! The cooking party has a maximum of 10 children due to limited space in the kitchen.

Mosaic Birthday (Any age)

Price includes up to 10 children; each additional child is $10. Using various materials - tiles, marbles and seashells - students will create mosaic collage photo frames, flower pots or wood cut-outs (examples: hearts and butterflies) that can enliven any room. Class RegisTRaTion: Register early. If you register 10 calendar days in advance you will receive a 10% discount on class tuition, excluding art and music private lessons and classes in the culinary arts. Payment must accompany registration!

BY PHone: You may register by phone only if you will be paying by credit card. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

in PeRson: You may register in person Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Classes are filled in the order registrations are received. Students who register by mail should assume acceptance unless otherwise notified. We do not send a confirmation letter. It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice.

TRansFeR PoliCY: Students may transfer without any charge from one class to another before either class has met twice. A transfer may be made by calling Sweetwater. Transfers may be made only within the same term. No transfers will be accepted once the second class begins.

laTe RegisTRaTions: Students may register for any class, space permitting, before the second class. However, class fees are not prorated, and cancellation decisions are made 2 days prior to the start date.

MeMBeRsHiP: Cost of a membership is $40 for an individual and $65 for a family. This membership is good for one full calendar year from the date that you apply for the membership. Family memberships apply to immediate family members only. Memberships are non-refundable.

MaTeRials: All materials, unless otherwise noted, will be supplied by students at their own expense. A list of necessary materials will be provided at the time of registration or will be provided by the faculty at the first class.

sWeeTWaTeR CouRse PoliCY: Sweetwater makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as indicated in the catalogue. However, we reserve the right to cancel courses, change instructors, and combine classes when necessary without prior notification.CanCellaTions & ReFunds: Sweetwater does not offer make-up classes or tuition reimbursement for student absenteeism. Sweetwater does not prorate tuition for classes that the student cannot attend.

If Sweetwater must cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment, registered students will be notified 2 days before the start date, and tuition will be reimbursed within 30 days of notification.
