1965-66 President: Mack AdamsSouthern Methodist University

Vice President: Robert Jones, UASecretary: Guy Moore, TT

At the ACUHO 65 conference at Penn State delegates from the Southwest schools met to discuss the need of having a regional meeting. They decided to meet the following year and invite housing and food service workers from colleges from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas. They elected temporary officers and agreed that the first meeting would be at SMU.

On February 24-25, 1966 the first conference of SWACUHO was held on the SMU campus in Dallas. Seventy-six participants representing 27 schools attended this conference. The temporary officers were elected to offices for this 1966 conference.

The first conference consisted of a keynote address, three panel discussions, six program sessions, campus tours and a closing banquet.

During the business meeting of the conference the following issues were decided: 1) there would to be three elected positions: president, vice president and secretary; 2) there would be an individual from each state appointed to the executive committee; 3) the conference would move from place to place each year; 4) the vice president would serve as the program chair for the annual conference; and 5) the president from the previous year would serve as an ex-officio member of the executive committee.

Newly elected president, Robert Jones, appointed a committee to write a constitution for SWACUHO. Lee Schilling, UA, was appointed chairman and the other state directors composed the remainder of the committee.

The constitution committee proposed a draft of the constitution to the executive committee during the ACUHO conference in the summer of 1966. After making some changes, it is decided that the constitution be proposed to the membership at the 2nd annual SWACUHO conference. The 2nd Annual conference was held at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The constitution was approved by the membership. Membership was open to all institutions of higher learning accredited by recognized educational associations. Officers were president, vice president/program chair, secretary-treasurer. President and vice president were one-year terms and the secretary and treasurer were two-year terms elected on alternating years. The president appointed state directors for a two-year term with Arkansas and Oklahoma appointed on odd years and Texas and Louisiana on even years. The executive committee consists of the president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, state directors and the past president. The following committees were established as standing committees: Program, Nominating, and Site Selection. A publicity chairman was appointed to handle the dissemination of information to the National Association and newspapers, and the accumulation of material for a scrapbook

Annual dues for membership in the organization were $5.00.

Conference discussion focused on broadening the program to include married housing and the having a displays section of materials from participating schools. Also, the possibility of having commercial vendors setting up an area with various products used in residence halls, but no salesmen because they would distract from the interest sessions.

Doug Hallenbeck commissioned Bob Huss, Ron Sasse, Nancy Murphy-Chadwick and Kelsel Thompson to write a white paper on the “Benefits of On Campus Housing.” They reported that studies have shown that students who reside on campus receive direct benefits related to individual academic success as compared to their off campus counterparts. In conclusion on campus housing required trained, skilled professional staff to manage it successfully. When managed properly the benefits of on campus housing far outweigh the management challenge that it provides. This document was then shared with all Chief Housing Officers in the SWACUHO region.

The annual conference was held March 1-3, 2015 in Norman, Oklahoma and was hosted by the University of Oklahoma.  The conference theme was, “We’re Doing Fine at 49!,” 303 registered conference guests and 53 exhibitors attended the conference.  Guidebook was once again the program booklet of choice (electronic).  The Embassy Suites and Convention Center provided a great venue for the conference and Kevin Carroll was the key note speaker who delivered a very inspired message.

During the Mid-Year Planning Meeting in October, the Executive Board participated in a context mapping exercise to consider best practices, successes, areas of concern, needs of the Association’s membership, trends and future goals.  This exercise provided great discussion and enlightenment and something which the Executive Board will track going forward.

The 2014 new professional’s conference, SWACUHO-U, was held at University of Texas-Dallas on September 26th, where there were 31 attendees and 9 presenters. The CHO Workshop was hosted in San Marcos by Texas State University on November 6th & 7th with 44 registered in attendance.

The “Mid-Level Mixology” (Mid-Level Drive-in Conference) was held at University of Texas-Dallas on June 11th and 12th with 16 conference participants and 6 presenters.

Congratulations to Sean Duggan, of Texas Tech University, for being honored with the James L. Gibson Exceptional Service Award at the annual conference!
