What makes someone successful?

Planning Motivation Knowing how to learn Ability to deal with the pressure of exams

Helping your child plan their revision

Set the scene – What are GCSEs? GCSEs are a compilation of competitions

Your child against… Themselves Their friends and classmates The rest of the UK International students

Planning- Get them to visualise their future

GCSEs are the key to their future career… where do they want to be…

In Sept 2015 In Sept 2017 In 2021

Motivation – how to get them motivated

Intrinsic vs Extrinsic… “Should I offer them cash?” – “should I reward

them” This is personal choice, however studies suggest

that intrinsic gets better results that extrinsic…. Therefore Get them to set themselves personal goals and

revisit them regularly

Keep the long term goal at the forefront of what they are doing… why are you revising; so that I can become a ….. Doctor, nurse, lawyer…

Get them to know their strengths and weaknesses

What do they need to focus on? What are their key subjects? Don’t let them be too self critical… just be honest

Fixed and Growth Mindset

We have introduced this concept to Year 11 students this year and

promoted that students should have a growth mindset and not fixed.

Fixed Mindset

Intelligence is fixed and you are born bright

You are born bright or clever

Success at all cost

Growth Mindset

Success is determined by hard work

The harder you work the more successful you will be

You learn from failure- failure is good

Fixed and Growth Mindset- in action….

Your child gets a mock result back a week after the Easter holiday. Their target is a B (minimum 38/50) but they get 26/50) which their teacher tells them would be “around a D”.

What do you say to them? “Better luck next time?” “You were probably unlucky” “It doesn’t matter” “A ‘D’… You’re a Disaster”

Or “OK… what do you need to do differently next time to get

more marks”….. “what help do you need”…. “what areas do you need to focus on”.

Where do you start?Do they: Know where their Yr 10 notes and exercise books

are? They know the topics they need to revise for the

mock and actual exams They know what exam board they are studying and

what paper they are sitting- Foundation or Higher Know when they are doing Controlled Assessment

(coursework- see information for term 2) Know how to download past paper questions and

mark schemes Know how to traffic light their knowledge to get a

focus for what they can do in their revision

Ensure they have the right environment

Somewhere clear and quiet to work at home Phone, email, social media are OFF The correct equipment Friends who want to work too

Who or what could get in their way

On an average day in Britain … For how long does someone watch television? 3 hrs 45

minutes How many minutes does someone browse the internet on

their phone? 24 minutes How many hours will someone spend on their smartphone? 2

hours

And in total for all of Britain… How many hours per day are spent on Facebook? 34 million

hours How many hours per day are spent on Twitter? 28 million

hours How many KitKat fingers are eaten per day? 50 million

Therefore there is always time!

How to plantheir time

Key points to planning a revision timetable

How often? It must be realistic and achievable Factor in relaxation points What about their job? Focus on subject and revision style Works best if combined with their friends revision

timetable Factor in the timings of their exams- see exam

timetable

Study Leave

There is no study leave in Term 5 Students will be expected to be in every

day In Term 6 they should be in for their

exams or for the subject they are waiting to do exams in.

Exam timetable

Students should have an exam timetable pinned up on the fridge so you and they know when they have exams.

An up to date link can be found on our website

Dealing with Stress

Don’t over emphasise the importance of exams results Turn off Electronic devices Keep relaxation time built in Don’t focus on grades only on hard work Steer away from “competitive stressing” with friends

Revision

Students have been given an How to revise guide and have been shown how to use various technique to help them revise. Again this can be found on our website
