Term 4 2020 President’s Message
Term 3 kept the MASA Committee members very busy with professional learning, student
activities and resource development.
Our Remote and Rural Schools Mathematics Program (RRSMP) reached Renmark, Burra,
Whyalla, Coober Pedy and Kangaroo Island in Term 3. Our program continues to incorporate
personalised professional learning and individual mentoring with attendees. Kangaroo Island
(KICE) were the first location to request a parent information evening. This was a wonderful
event where our consultants had the opportunity to promote mathematics. Our focus was on
“Participation, Positivity and Playfulness” regarding mathematics. If you are interested in being
part of this free program for remote and rural schools, that is supported by the Education
Minister, Hon John Gardner, please contact Helen Booth at [email protected].
There are still a few spaces left in the Term 4 program.
The MASA Annual Quiz Night was tweaked this year to allow schools to choose to hold the
event either virtually or in person this year for the Senior Division. This was a significant change
to the usual event, so we would love your feedback to ensure that the Quiz Night is a success
in 2021. Please stay tuned for the survey that will come out. The results will be used to decide
the structure of future events.
The Hamann School Mathematics Competition (HSMC) was completed in Term 3. Thank you to
all the schools who were able to take pause in Term 2 when we were unable to have large
groups of students in the same room. The Awards Night also took a different format with 3
smaller events to ensure we were adhering to the government restrictions. This hybrid event
celebrated our top winners of the competition both online and in person. I would also like to
take this opportunity to congratulate all winners and participants, it is wonderful to have so
many students choosing to engage in mathematics at this challenging level. Thank you to the
Society of Petroleum Engineers for their continued sponsorship of the event.
We ended the term with our Primary Conference. Andrew Lorimer-Derham was an excellent
keynote who presented virtually on the day from Victoria. Andrew was able to engage the
delegates in group discussion and encourage creativity with mathematics. The whole
conference was a success, and we are looking forward to an even bigger event next year.
Term 4 brings many more events on the calendar. I encourage people to register to attend the
STEM Conference. SASTA and MASA work together to coordinate this event. This year it is held
at Uni SA Magill. The program has an excellent range of workshop options. The theme is “How
does STEM help us battle threats to our world?”
Our AGM is scheduled for December 8th, this is an opportunity to hear about what we have
accomplished this year. The 2021 Committee is voted in at this meeting. If you are interested in
volunteering your time to support the mathematics community, I encourage you to apply to be
part of the Committee. Volunteers can offer support in a variety of ways (e.g. presenting
workshops, supporting student activities, developing resources, social media or website
development). The application form can be accessed here.
I hope you all have a wonderful Term 4!

ASIC's Moneysmart financial literacy funding
Reminder: Funding applications close 16 October
ASIC's Moneysmart for teachers program supports teachers to connect learning to life.
Learning about money and how it works in the real world can transform the student
experience while establishing good money habits now and into the future.
Moneysmart works with primary and secondary principal associations to fund financial
literacy project in schools. Funding is worth up to $5,000 for each project.
We are looking for new, creative project ideas that:
• teach kids how to budget and plan in the digital age
• integrates financial literacy across the whole school
• incorporates cross sector collaboration
• includes the local community.
Apply for funding to see your ideas come to life.
Applications are now open and close 16
October. Visit Moneysmart in schools for
application form and guidelines.
Remote and Rural Schools Mathematics Program
RRSMP will combine face-to-face and online support in Term 4. We are keen to continue
supporting teachers in both domains. This support will be tailored to the needs of the
schools and teachers in each district. Our focus remains on improving teacher pedagogy.
MASA Professional Officer, Helen Booth, has developed further materials to support the
mathematics teachers in these country areas of South Australia. Workshops can be on
Zoom and participants will leave with ready to use resources.
Thank you to the Education Minister, Hon John
Gardner, for the funding to support our remote
and rural schools. If your school or region want
to be part of this free scheme, please contact
Helen on [email protected]
Quiz night Quiz (survey for coordinators)
In 2020, to provide a fun event for students while complying with safety requirements,
MASA swiftly redeveloped its Quiz Night offering. After this experience, we are keen to
receive feedback on how schools responded to the changes and whether MASA should
aim to return to business as usual, if possible in 2021, or whether there is an interest in a new
way of delivering this content.
Please use this link to complete the short survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3BYSMNH

Quest Presentation Night
Supported by the Department for Education South Australia and MASA, these student competitions
are free to enter.
Mathematical investigation projects are a great exercise at any year level to get students thinking
about applying mathematical concepts to measure, assess or even solve real-world problems.
Students can do their best work when following an idea they are passionate about. The projects
may be in the form of written reports, posters, models, or videos.
The 2020 entries have been judged and there are many impressive projects that will be celebrated
with presentation events on Monday October 26th. Some of these projects have also been found
noteworthy by the judges of the National Maths Talent Quest. Congratulations to all students who
participated and thank you to all teachers who
coordinated their school’s entries. Thank you also
to the Department for Education who sponsors the
competition and the committee who steer and
judge the competition.

We entered the SA Maths Talent Quest in 2020
Earlier this year, when I presented the idea of the maths Talent Quest to my year 5/6 class,
most of them were keen to have a go. They formed their own teams of 4 or 5 friends and
came up with some interesting ideas.
The excitement continued over the next few months as they investigated topics such as;
maths in netball, bats and their wingspans, fuel consumption in cars and weird logic
problems. They worked hard to get their PowerPoint presentations with explanations,
graphs and tables finished by the deadline.
At the end of Term 3 we received an email from MASA saying 3 groups were invited to the
Competition Presentation Night to receive an award for their work. Well, you would have
thought they’d won the Logies, their cheers were so loud and excitement so high. They
know this award may only be a certificate, but they are ‘over the moon’ to have their
maths efforts recognised by impartial judges.
If you’re interested in participating next year, here are a few suggestions to help you get
started:
• Develop team work skills in your class – Jo Boaler shows good ways of doing this
• Encourage students to ask lots of maths questions, (without trying to answer straight
away)
• try using empty food boxes, playground equipment, pictures (explorify website is
awesome for science pictures), puzzles etc
• choose one question to investigate as a class first
• make sure students know how to gather, record and represent data
• have fun with it
There is something for all year levels R-12, check out https://www.masaonline.org.au/
for more ideas and information.

SPE Prizes in 2021
In 2021, The Hamman School Mathematics Competition will enjoy its 60th year
of unbroken continuity. The expectation is that the competition date will
return to its normal place in the school calendar, which will make it
Wednesday 17th March 2021.
Competition, marking night and presentation night dates will be confirmed at the end of 2020.
We thank the Society for Petroleum Engineers for their historic and continuing support of this
wonderful student opportunity. We thank the writers, coordinators and markers of the competitions
and we look forward to celebrating the achievements of the students.
Coordinators are reminded that there are some unclaimed prizes from the recent 2020 competition
that can be collected from the MASA office.
