    DEFINITIONS OF KEY TERMS acrocyanosis: cyanosis in the feet and hands

    caput succedaneum: edema of the scalp at the presenting part of

    the head cavernous hemangioma: type of birthmark evidenced as a dilatedvascular space

    central cyanosis: cyanosis of the trunk

    cephalhematoma: a collection of blood under the periosteum ofthe skull bone

    conduction: transfer of body heat to a cooler solid object incontact with the baby

    convection: flow of heat from the body surface to coolersurrounding air.

    erythema toxicum: newborn rash that usually appears in the first

    to fourth day of life but may appear up to 2 weeks of age;beginning with a papule, increasing in severity to becomeerythema by the second day, then disappearing by the third day;sometimes called a flea-bite rash

    evaporation: loss of heat through conversion of a liquid to avapor

    hemangioma: vascular tumor of the skin

    meconium: a sticky, tar-like, blackish-green, odorless materialformed from mucus, vernix, lanugo, hormones, andcarbohydrates that accumulated during intrauterine life

    milia: pinpoint white papule (a plugged or unopened sebaceousgland) that can be found on the cheek or across the bridge of thenose of every newborn

    Mongolian spot: collection of pigment cells (melanocytes);slate-gray patches across the sacrum or buttocks and possiblythe arms and legs

    natal teeth: teeth appearing in the newborn

    neonatal period: the first 28 days of life

    Cont nevus flammeus: a macular purple or dark red lesion (sometimes

    called a port-wine stain because of its deep color) that is presentat birth

    pseudomenstruation: mucous vaginal secretion in femalenewborns, sometimes blood-tinged

    radiation: transfer of body heat to a cooler solid object not in

    contact with the baby strawberry hemangioma: a type of birthmark identified as an

    elevated area formed by immature capillaries and endothelialcells

    subconjunctival hemorrhage: rupture of a conjunctival capillaryappearing as a red spot on the sclera, usually on the inneraspect of the eye, or as a red ring around the cornea

    thrush: a candidal infection that usually appears on the tongueand sides of the cheeks as white or gray patches

    transitional stool: green and loose stool passed on the second tothird day of the newborns life
