The studentswhowill be auditioningonNon-Melodic Instruments should follow the requirements as listedbelowandusetherecordedrhythmsthatarefoundonthe“SummertimeSHFPercussionRhythms.mp3”file,which is included with these auditionmaterials. The page immediately following this page (“Non-MelodicPercussion Instruments – Additional Information”) contains additional information for studentswhowill beauditioningonnon-melodicpercussioninstruments.

The two pages following the “Non-Melodic Percussion Instruments – Additional Information” contain theselections that your students who will be auditioning on Melodic Instruments will be performing at theirauditions.Thesepages,“PercussionEnsemble(MelodicInstruments)Auditions”,containtheauditionselectionsforMarimba,Violin,Keyboard,andAcousticBass.PleaseseebelowtheRequirementsforMelodicInstrumentssectionfordescriptionsofeachofthesetwopages. Requirements for Non-Melodic Percussion Instruments (Congas, Bongos, Timbales, Cowbell, Guiro, Claves, Shaker):

© The required rhythms can be heard on the Summertime SHF Percussion Rhythms mp3 that is included with these audition materials. These rhythms are similar to those that will be used in Micaela, so will not be necessary to prepare for both songs.

© Students can choose to audition on up to three percussion instruments.

© Students should be able to play their rhythm(s), uninterrupted, for at least 30 seconds, as close to 160 bpm as possible.

© In addition to the required rhythms, students, especially those auditioning on cowbell, bongos, congas, and/or timbales, will be encouraged to play fills, as well as samples of what they might do if they were able to play a solo on their percussion instruments.

© At this time, solos in Summertime are tentatively planned for bongos, cowbell, congas,

and timbales. Micaela solos are tentatively planned for bongos, congas, and timbales. This could be changed, depending upon what is heard at the auditions and during “jam sessions” (more information on this will be given out after audition results are announced) and rehearsals.

Requirements for Melodic Instruments (Marimba, Violin, Keyboard, Acoustic Bass)

© Marimba player must use two mallets. © Bass player must play pizzicato. © Part 1 (a): C Major Scale – one or two octaves © Part 1 (b): C Major Arpeggio – one or two octaves (if one octave, encourage your

students to play the arpeggio twice without stopping) © Part 2: Selection from Summertime Optional Components for Melodic Instruments © Part 3: In addition to the requirements listed here and on the attached “Percussion

Ensemble (Melodic Instruments) Auditions” papers, students can also choose to showcase another portion of Summertime or a portion of Micaela during the audition.

© Students who choose this Part 3 option must inform the adjudicators of the measure numbers that they will be performing, in addition to the above requirements.

Additional Information

v Students must be able to play the rhythms on their chosen instrument(s) as indicated on the Summertime SHF PERCUSSION RHYTHMS.mp3 that is included with these audition materials.

v Students must be able to play their rhythm(s), uninterrupted, for at least 30 seconds. v Students are encouraged to perform their rhythms as close to 160 bpm as possible.

v The order of the rhythms on the recording, and commentary as to what is expected at the

audition, is as follows: § Congas: There are two rhythms that can be heard. The first is played on a single conga.

The second is played on a conga and a tumba. Either or both of these rhythms can be used in the audition. The conga/tumba rhythm can be modified during the audition, as long as the basic rhythm is maintained.

§ Bongos: This rhythm should be played as noted in the recording. § Timbales: The cascara rhythm should be maintained throughout, except for when fills are

being played. The rimshot/roll should be played at least three times during the audition. Neither a cowbell nor a jam block will be used with the timbales during the audition, though they may be included in the performance.

§ Cowbell: This rhythm will alternate with a straight four rhythm in some places in the song. § Guiro: This rhythm should be played as noted in the recording. § Claves: This rhythm should be played as noted in the recording. § Shaker: Shakers and Egg Shakers may be used during the audition.

v Students can choose to audition on one or more (up to three) instruments. v Students are encouraged to demonstrate any fills that they are able to play. v Students are also encouraged to play a sample of a percussion solo that they might use during

the performance of Summertime and/or Micaela. v Students and their parents should be made aware that portions of the auditions may be recorded

to assist in the decision process.
