  • The SUNY Cortland PromiseThe following creative concepts

spring from our work with the

    SUNY Cortland community.

    This included review of existing

    SUNY Cortland publications, your

    strategic goals, and on-campus focus

    group interviews. Encapsulating the

ideas set forth by the core institutional

values and the attributes in one

    succinct statement is the purpose

    of the promise. SUNY Cortland’s

promise is a concise articulation of

something the audience views as an

offer with intrinsic or extrinsic value.

    The University’s promise is:

    “The SUNY Cortland community

    inspires students by delivering a

    high-value education that

    develops the skills required to

    compete and excel in academics,

    athletics, and their careers.”

    Inspiring Community

    The SUNY Cortland community—

    faculty, staff, administration, alumni,

    and local leaders alike—inspires

students to reach their full potential…

to dig deeper, reach higher, and

    achieve more. Students find the

    support and encouragement they

need at SUNY Cortland to truly

advance all aspects of their lives—

    mind, body, spirit, personal, and

    professional

    High-value Education

    SUNY Cortland offers an “affordable

    education for everyone.” Its breadth

    of programs, combined with a

    track record of excellent outcomes

and successful alumni, results in a

    high-value education for students

from throughout New York as well

    as neighboring states. In addition,

    SUNY Cortland’s ranking by

Consumers Digest as a “top-50 best

    value” among public colleges and

universities is a testament to the

College’s goal of providing a high-

    value educational experience.

    Develops Skills

SUNY Cortland faculty and staff are

    highly skilled at talent identification

    and development. Our interviews

    with SUNY Cortland employees

    offered ample evidence of the

    extraordinary care, concern, and

    commitment they bring to their

    assignments across campus, all with

    students’ best interests at their

    core. This campus community

    takes good students and turns

them into great students and great

    graduates. They provide students with

“opportunities to rise to the top.”

SUNY Cortland AttributesIn addition, we, with the assistance

    of SUNY Cortland’s Task Force,

    collaborated on a multi-step campus-

wide initiative to identify the following

as the attributes which best capture

    and articulate the specific elements

that help SUNY Cortland stand out

    from its primary competition:

    • Hands-onLearning• TeacherEducation• Champion• QualityofStudentLife• AthleticExcellence

  • Communicating the AttributesSUNY Cortland’s attributes support

    the overall institutional image,

    publicly and prominently highlighting

    the essential characteristics of the

    SUNY Cortland experience. They

    can be communicated to target

    audiences in the following ways:

    Hands-on Learning

    From study abroad opportunities, to

    internships, to research with faculty,

    to community service/service learning

    projects, to clubs and organizations,

    to independent study, SUNY Cortland

provides ways for students to put

    their knowledge into practice.

    Students, faculty, and staff have

    an opportunity to showcase their

work to each other as well as to the

    public during the annual Scholars’

Day held each spring on campus.

    Faculty take students to professional

    conferences and meetings. The

    University’s three field campuses—

    including the impressive Huntington

    Outdoor Education Center at Raquette

Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie

    Gorge Nature Preserve outside

    Cortland, and the Brauer Memorial

    Geological Field Station on the

    Helderberg Escarpment near Albany—

    also provide for experiential learning

    opportunities. The Institute for Civic

    Engagement and Office of Student

    Learning match students’ interests and

    career goals with community service

    and service learning opportunities.

    SUNY Cortland students volunteer

    nearly 100,000 hours each year

    to businesses and human service

agencies, mostly in the Cortland area.

    Teacher Education

SUNY Cortland is the place in

New York to go for teacher

    education. The School of Education

    is the largest nationally accredited

    teacher education program in the

state with more than half of the

    University’s enrolled students

    pursuing education-related majors.

    In general, the institution still

    graduates the highest number of

teaching majors in New York, offering

    teacher certification in nearly every

    area except music and industrial

    arts. Excellent outcomes—including

    high pass rates on assessment

    tests—attract large numbers

    of students to the University’s

    teacher education programs.

    Champion

    Outstanding academic programs,

    combined with award-winning

    athletics, have made SUNY Cortland

a champion in its own right.

And in turn, the University helps

    students to become champions in

their lives, excelling in the classroom,

on the court, and beyond. Faculty

    members also are champions—

    they are award-winning teachers,

    published authors, dedicated mentors,

    and respected scholars. Each year

    faculty publish books and articles,

    present at professional conferences,

    and receive external grants for

their work. But perhaps the most

    compelling application of the term

“champion” is its use as a verb. The

    members of SUNY Cortland’s campus

    community champion for each other.

There is a sense of camaraderie,

    mutual support, and appreciation

    between and among students, their

    faculty, and the administrators who

    manage the logistical operations.

This “esprit de corps” is almost

    palpable in every conversation on

campus, and is certainly visible in

    the number of students proudly

    wearing clothing emblazoned with

    their college’s name and insignia(s).

    Quality of Student Life

    SUNY Cortland offers a high-quality

student life experience. With a large

    percentage of students participating

in more than 100 University clubs

    and organizations, 25 varsity sports,

    intramurals, and recreational sports,

    SUNY Cortland produces well-rounded

    leaders and highly participative

team players. More than 80 percent

    of SUNY Cortland students are

involved in some type of experiential

    learning opportunity before they

    graduate. In addition, the nearly

    200-acre campus and its nearly

    40 traditional and modern buildings,

17 of which are residence halls,

    provide a quality on-campus

    living experience for students.

    Athletic Excellence

    SUNY Cortland has been a

    major player in Division III

    athletics, garnering a Hall of

    Fame room full of trophies,

    ribbons, plaques, and other

    memorabilia. Student-athletes

    at SUNY Cortland are successful

    because of the institution’s

    dedication to athletics and

    because they generally receive

    more playing time than student-

    athletes at larger schools.

  • [ E L E VATO R S P E E C H]

SUNY Cortland is a remarkable liberal arts

college that inspires students and faculty

in more than 50 majors and programs to

be champions in all aspects of their lives.

We’re one of the top values among public

universities in the country. Our entire

    community is focused on transforming

    students into extraordinary graduates.

More than 80 percent of them engage in

    hands-on learning opportunities during

    their undergraduate years. We graduate

the highest number of educators in the

    Northeast. Our athletic teams have

won more than 20 Division III national

championships in six different sports. And

if you ask students and faculty what they

like best about SUNY Cortland, the most

common answer will be the energy and

    vibrancy of our campus life.

    FACULTY ADMINISTRATION & STAFF

You will be a life-changing influence on your students by engaging them in and out of the classroom in your research, by supervising their internships, and by facilitating practical experiences that enable them to learn by doing.

Regardless of your discipline or department, you are a significant part of our genuinely extraordinary legacy of “educating the educators.”

You have the opportunity to be viewed as a champion among your students and colleagues by being an award-winning teacher, a dedicated mentor, and a respected scholar.

Your engagement with students in and out of the classroom has a significant and positive impact on their quality of life during–and after–their years here.

The excellence you bring to the classroom and the support you show them is mirrored by the excellence our student-athletes bring to their roles as teammates and competitors.

Every interpersonal contact on our campus represents a teachable moment, so the positive interaction you have with students each day contributes to their education and development.

While teacher preparation takes place largely in the classroom, the administrative and managerial skills we bring to our work each day play key roles in facilitating the quality of educational experience that leads our students to become outstanding teachers.

The leadership and camaraderie you exhibit through your work makes you a champion in the eyes of the campus community.

The support you dedicate to students outside the classroom is a big part of what makes a SUNY Cortland education such a life-changing experience.

The strength of our athletic tradition has been built on the shoulders of strong and committed administrative and support teams across this campus.

The comprehensive research opportunities and access to hands-on learning you receive here will enable you to put your knowledge into practice, and will provide you with important career direction and personal growth.

Regardless of your major, your affiliation with SUNY Cortland’s commitment to excellent teaching will give you a competitive advantage in the eyes of potential employers and graduate schools.

Your enthusiastic contributions to academics, athletics, and campus life will not only serve you well, but it will foster the next generation of SUNY Cortland champions.

Participating in the multitude of opportunities and activities available to you here will greatly enrich your overall college experience, adding value to your degree and enhancing your personal and professional potential.

You will have the chance to participate in, and/or support, nationally respected athletic programs. All students enjoy the benefits of outstanding sports and training facilities.

Your child is receiving the kind of hands-on training and preparation that top-notch employers and graduate schools are looking for in successful employees and graduate students. As a result, your student’s future is very bright.

Excellent teaching is a priority on this campus among all faculty. Your child will graduate from a program considered to be among the top in the nation in terms of producing graduates who achieve among the highest pass rates on assessment tests.

Your child’s experience at SUNY Cortland will lead them to become champions in all aspects of their own lives.

Your child will enjoy a safe and comfortable environment here, while being supported by an extraordinarily committed and dedicated staff.

Your child’s experience will be well-rounded through opportunities to be associated with nationally-respected athletic programs. And s/he will enjoy the benefits of outstanding sports and training facilities.

Your alma mater is recognized for producing graduates who are ready to achieve success from the moment they receive their degree. We hope you’ll carefully consider how you can participate in providing these kinds of opportunities for current students.

Alumni should be willing and available to current students to serve as role models, mentors, and advisors. The continued success and notoriety of our teacher education program adds value to your degree every day.

Be a model of success for current SUNY Cortland students. The accomplishments of fellow alumni “champions” add value to your degree and a sense of pride to your personal and professional life.

Be available to current students as mentors and role models. Your personal standards for quality of life were largely shaped by the people you encountered, and the experiences you had, as a student at SUNY Cortland.

SUNY Cortland alumni in athletics represent a 130-year history of academic excellence. Your alma mater is viewed across the country as a trailblazer and a preeminent player in Division III athletics.

These wordmarks could help unify the branding efforts

For use over images and darker background colors

For use on light or white backgrounds

For one-color applications such as faxes, copies, or newsletters

The sizing of the wordmark is less important than its

placement. The wordmark can be understated in size and still

occupy a superior placement in the hierarchy of the design.

Placement in the UPPER-right or UPPER-left corner gives it

    more visual attention and importance.

brings attention to the idea of the “Moment” within the experience.

  • [ W E B D E TA I L S]

In most cases the Web site is the first

point of reference for those outside the

    SUNY Cortland community, and thus

must offer a powerful representation of

    the “Momentum” concept. The home

page design is clean and presents the

key elements of people and place in

    communicating the College’s attributes.

The image on the right of the screen

will always be a location on or around

campus. The image on the left will always

feature an individual from within the

SUNY Cortland community. The stories of

how students and faculty work together

in hands-on learning projects, of SUNY

Cortland’s impressive legacy in the arena

of teacher education, of the College’s

success in intercollegiate athletics, of how

    individuals champion one another’s efforts,

and of the vibrancy of campus life will

be told through profiles of the individuals

visually featured. Those images will refresh

upon re-entering the home page. To

    reinforce the “Momentum” concept, the

images will slide into place from the left

    and right immediately upon entering

    the site.

  • Some will say victory on the playing field happens when the final buzzer sounds

and the final score is tallied. At SUNY Cortland, we define victory in athletics

quite a bit differently. It happens when the game starts, and our student-athletes

look into each other’s eyes. They know that, regardless of the outcome, the real

triumph comes in each and every moment they compete together, before that

    final buzzer sounds.

And our definition of victory has resulted in more than 20 Division III national

    championships in six different sports.

As the flagship publication in SUNY Cortland’s undergraduate recruiting

efforts, the viewbook will bring the “Momentum” campaign to life

in the eyes of prospective students in ways no other piece can. The

front cover will use powerful imagery and a punchy tagline to draw

readers in. The introductory spread will serve as an attractive and

necessary bridge from the front cover to the various content sections,

while introducing readers to the contemplative yet inspirational and

encouraging voice of the campaign. And the interior spreads will

incorporate a careful balance of important factual information with

more compelling personal stories that communicate significant

SUNY Cortland moments, as well as the College’s promise and

attributes as they relate to academics, campus life, research, athletics,

    and outcomes.

    In order to further engage

    SUNY Cortland alumni, the alumni

    magazine will complement the many

    other efforts currently being taken.

    Entitled SUNY Cortland Moments,

the alumni magazine will present an

    attractive and powerful way to

    strengthen the “Momentum” campaign.

Based on our research, we know that

SUNY Cortland alumni hold an optimistic

view of the College and, for the most part,

are in a position to embrace reputation-

    building efforts. The alumni magazine,

    through student and faculty profiles,

as well as feature stories on academic

    accomplishments, significant research

    efforts, success in intercollegiate athletics,

    and the impressive achievements of

alumni, will be a source of pride for the

entire SUNY Cortland community. At the

same time, it will be an invaluable tool in

    enhancing the “Momentum” campaign

    and enhancing the College’s image.

  • The sun had just set on another crisp October Wednesday. Professor Tony Lee was shutting down his office in the School of Education and preparing to go home when the idea came to him. It came after he had glanced the title page of a paper submitted just a few hours earlier by one of his top students. Little did he know then that it was a moment in time that would define his research efforts for the next two years.
