HONORABLE EUGENE M. FAHEY ’84Justice, New York State Supreme Court
Appellate Division, Fourth Department, Buffalo, N.Y.
Thank you to the Law Alumni Association for thismuch appreciated award.
The foundation of any success is rooted in our personalrelationships. I have been very fortunate to come from a strong family where we were all encouraged to pursueeducation. We were all nurtured in an environment thatemphasized the love of learning for its own sake. Mostespecially, I want to thank my wife, Colleen Maroney, agreat friend, wife and mother, along with my wonderful
daughter, Ann. Any recognition, without them, would be without meaning.
In beginning my legal career, I was very fortunate to have two role modelsand friends to help me, the Hon. Edward C. (Mickey) NeMoyer and Richard L. Woll. They stressed the value of professional courtesy and thorough preparation.
In the Appellate Division, you develop close relationships with your fellowjudges. I have been lucky to work with people of the highest caliber. My fellowjudges are exceptionally hard-working and intelligent. I consider it a uniqueprivilege to be able to work with them on a daily basis.
The business of judging is a joint effort and those in my chambers have alwaysexcelled. I am proud to be associated with them. I especially want to thank mylaw clerks, Michael Pastrick and John MacCallum, my secretary, Mary Welch, and my court clerk of many years, Carol Williams.
Since high school every degree I have received, B.A., M.A. and J.D., have all come from UB. In law school, I had many fine teachers, including WadeNewhouse, Elizabeth Mensch, Virginia Leary and Jim Magavern. To be in theirclassrooms was to have your mind opened to an expanded way of viewing thelaw in relation to the world. The faculty served as an inspiration, encouragingus to pursue justice through the rule of law.
In addition to thanking the Law Alumni Association for this honor, I alsocongratulate my fellow honorees. To be included with them makes this awardeven more gratifying.

ROBERT C. SCHWENKEL ’82 Partner, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP
New York, N.Y.
Thank you to the Law Alumni Association for thishonor and congratulations to my fellow award recipients.
I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to haveattended SUNY Buffalo Law, where the challenging and inspiring faculty helped prepare me for a rewardingcareer. In particular, I owe a great deal to Professor Louis Del Cotto whose mentorship ultimately influencedmy focus on Mergers & Acquisitions.
I was fortunate to have been recruited by Fried Frank, which I joined in 1982 with the intention of practicing tax law. However, the firm’s leading M&A practice initially staffed me as a corporate lawyer on a high-profile takeover battle. Needless to say, I never practiced tax law and I never looked back. As an associate, several partners took interest in mydevelopment and their mentoring provided a strong foundation for my success. While the legal business has changed dramatically over the three decades I have been practicing, Fried Frank’s culture of collaboration and “partnership”has remained steadfast. I am grateful to be a part of a first-rate firm with high-profile clients.
Last, but certainly not least, I am very fortunate to have the encouragement of a wonderful family and terrific friends (many of whom are my colleagues).Without their indispensable support, I don’t believe I could have risen to thechallenges of practicing M&A law, navigating pressure-packed moments andworking many long hours.
Put simply, I am the beneficiary of many who have stood in my corner – and I am humbled and honored to be here this evening. Thank you.

HONORABLE LISA BLOCH RODWIN ’85 Judge, Erie County Family Court
Buffalo, N.Y.
Congratulations to all my fellow honorees! I am sohonored to be recognized in your company. I have beenblessed with a career that has allowed me to use myeducation and skills to do what I love, helping families in our community.
I am so grateful for the friendships I made while in lawschool, friendships that have lasted for three decades. I would be remiss if I did not recognize a few specialpeople. First, the three District Attorneys I had the honor
of serving: Richard Arcara, who hired me; Kevin Dillon, who believed I hadwhat it took to start upstate New York’s first Domestic Violence Bureau andwork with victims who had previously been ignored by the criminal justicesystem; and Frank Clark, who understood that the only way to ensure successfultreatment of family violence was to use a multi-disciplinary process to supportfamilies in crisis.
Next, my parents Larry and Steffi, who gave me unconditional love andsupport and taught by example how important it is to give back to thecommunity through service. I also have to thank my husband and best friendMichael, who never complains when I tell him I have joined yet anothercommittee or started on yet another project. And my amazing sons, David and Benjamin, who helped me achieve my dream of becoming a Family CourtJudge, and represent the best of anything I have accomplished in this life.
I also want to recognize my incredible staff, whose dedication inspires meevery day. In addition, I thank the attorneys whom I have litigated with andagainst in the criminal justice system and whom appear before me in the Family Court system; I have always admired your passion and your hard work.
I have tried to live my life according to a lesson taught in the Talmud, a book of scholarly Jewish writings. It is said that whoever has saved a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world. I am grateful I have had theopportunity to assist so many in my journey and I look forward to theopportunity to serve many more.
Thank you for this honor.

MICHAEL J. SURGALLA, JR. ’82Trial Attorney, U.S. Department of Justice
Criminal Division, Human Rights & Special Prosecutions SectionWashington, D.C.
I thank the SUNY Buffalo Law Alumni Association for this award. It is an honor to be included amongthese recipients and I extend my congratulations to each of them.
Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of my mother’spassing. I wish that she and my father, a long-time,adjunct faculty member at UB’s medical school, could be here tonight. My parents instilled in each of theirchildren the importance of a good education, and
I believe that among the four of us, we have approximately eight degrees fromthe University at Buffalo.
I did not know many lawyers when I was growing up. My sister, Kathleen,SUNY Buffalo Law Class of ’79, paved the way for me after she was acceptedinto the J.D./Ph.D. program. She was always around to give me great guidance. My brother, John, SUNY Buffalo Law Class of ’84, always had my back.
My wife, Jill, has served as my role model for public service. She has spent her entire 36-year legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice as a lawyerand judge. Without her love, counsel, loyalty and unwavering support, I wouldnot be here tonight.
I received a first-class education at SUNY Buffalo Law School. I am foreverindebted to my professors, especially Virginia Leary and Dean ThomasHeadrick, who were my mentors during and after law school. And I would like to thank Corey Hogan, who gave me my first job after law school.
In their honor, in my own small way, I try to give back to the school byassisting the next generation of great SUNY Buffalo lawyers. Thank you.

WILLIAM F. SAVINO ’75 Senior Partner, Damon Morey LLP
Buffalo, N.Y.
At barely 21, I started law school after trying to supportmyself as a working musician. I was immediately adoptedby the law school family at UB; they helped me make thetransition from musician to lawyer.
Freshman year my Contracts Professor Stewart Macaulaytook me aside to tell me that he liked my jazz show onWBFO. Classmates read my jazz articles in UB’s weeklymagazine, and one of them just told me he still has
copies. Senior year, my band became UB's jazz trio in residence. Through my classmate Peggy Rabkin, I was published by our Law Review and, via herhusband, Sam, obtained an internship with our County Attorney Jim Magavern,a distinguished SUNY Buffalo Law alum.
Upon returning to Buffalo after my clerkship, it was Jim Magavern who wouldhire me. One year later, Jim’s friend and classmate and future Dean of UB’sbusiness school, John Thomas, appointed me to teach undergraduates businesslaw. Teaching these last 35 years forced me to learn diverse areas of law andexposed me to undergraduates who became business people. Many of thosestudents would later become clients.
In 1987, Liz, my wonderful wife and mother of our incredible children, foundher own family and connections at the Law School. Liz introduced me to DeanNils Olsen, who invited me to teach commercial litigation. Now, after 13 yearsof teaching practical legal skills, I can admit that my class also functions as anaudition to find prospective litigators.
There’s a reason the UB logo (created by my Property Professor, Bill Greiner)consists of an interlocking U and B; it’s a reminder of our ongoing connections. We are so fortunate to have a world-class law school and a Dean, Makau Mutua, who knows the value of maintaining connections with the legal community.
It’s a symbiotic relationship, and I was just lucky enough to realize that fromthe very beginning.
And, I’m still a working musician.

SUNY Buffalo Law School has been a tremendous partner in a number of these court-based initiatives, providing expertise and allowinglaw students to intern in these courts. Plus the school has allowed me theopportunity to further interact with the Law School community and itsstudents, by teaching an annual bridge course. I’ve been rewarded daily by my relationship with God, family, bench, legal community, court clients and the Law School community.

On behalf of the SUNY Buffalo Law AlumniAssociation, the Board of Directors, Officers and Staff, welcome to our 52nd annual dinner and presentation of the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Heartfeltcongratulations to our honorees. We are pleased torecognize your extraordinary accomplishments as shiningexamples of the exceptional lawyers who graduate fromour law school. We are happy to join with your family, friends and colleagues to celebrate your distinguishedcareers.
The generous support of our sponsors makes this great event possible. Many of our sponsors have extended that support year after year and we aregrateful to them. Please join us in recognizing their generosity and pleaseconsider them for future business. Despite what has been an otherwisedifficult and challenging year for legal education, I am pleased to say that your alumni association and your law school are doing well.
On the alumni association front, we have continued with our efforts to expand our geographic footprint and this year added a chapter for international alumni. This new chapter joins our existing active chaptersin New York City, Washington, D.C., Rochester, Albany and Central New York.Through videoconferencing technology, we have been able to include thesechapters in several of our meetings this year. As our alumni are successful in their efforts to pursue employment outside of our traditional footprint, we fully expect this exciting trend to continue.
This past year, we have been engaged in a comprehensive and opendiscussion with the other alumni associations at UB on the issue of alumni engagement and can report back to you that your support, both in terms of your time and your financial resources, compares quite favorablyto our peer alumni associations. Thank you.
As in years past, the GOLD Group organized an impressive calendar of social events and CLE programs, including a series of receptions to greet prospective students and welcome many of them for the first time to the Buffalo area. We were pleased that this year, for the first time ever,GOLD Group board members were invited to participate as members of the Association’s planning committees.

Once again, this year the Law Alumni Association continued its tradition of supporting student scholarships in order to help the Law School enroll thebrightest and most talented students possible.
In January, we were pleased to recognize the Honorable Eugene F. Pigott,Jr. with the 2014 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award. One of the highlights of this year’sJaeckle program was an unscheduled appearance of New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, who spoke at length praising thecaliber of the lawyers who graduate from SUNY Buffalo Law School and theimportant role our law school plays in the New York State legal community.
Our Law School has had an extraordinary year as well. Despite anunprecedented drop nationally in law school applications, we haveexperienced only minimal declines in our application levels and at the sametime have been able to maintain the quality of the incoming first-year class.Dean Makau Mutua continues to enhance the national and internationalreputation of the Law School and to improve the academic and skills-basedlegal education of the students, with programs such as LAWR (Legal Analysis,Writing and Research), the new and substantially upgraded research andwriting program for first and second-year students.
As a board member, officer and, this past year, President of your lawalumni association, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the professionalstaff of the Law Alumni Office. Vice Dean and Executive Director IleneFleischmann, Assistant Dean and Assistant Director Lisa Mueller, and theentire staff are unfailingly helpful, professional and committed. They make it a pleasure to be involved, and we are all fortunate to have the opportunityto work with them.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the Law AlumniAssociation. I greatly appreciate the hard work and generous service of our board members and officers, and I applaud their efforts on behalf of the Association and the Law School.
Best regards,
Terrence M. Gilbride ’88
