ACCIDENTS

● Students Accidents in the classroom or on the playground must be reported to the nurse and/or principal immediately. The most common

lawsuit that teachers/districts face is that of “lack of supervision”; NEVER should a child or children be left unsupervised

anywhere on campus for any amount of time (i.e. computer lab, outside the classroom, etc.).

● Teachers

Injuries incurred while on the job must be reported immediately to the nurse, secretary, or principal. In order to be eligible for

workman’s compensation, the employee must complete the necessary forms from the nurse and visit one of the doctors on the

approved list. Failure to report an accident and visit to the appropriate doctor may jeopardize the employee’s right to workman’s

compensation.

Any employee of the District who suffers a job-related injury/accident must follow the steps below (preferably with their

supervisor/site nurse):

o Life Threatening Emergency: Dial 9-1-1 o NON life threatening dial The Alliance for a triage nurse at: 1 (888) CLAIM-89 (1-888-252-4689); after the

prompt, press 2 for the triage nurse. o The triage nurse will assess the injured employee over the phone (calls average around 20 minutes). o The nurse will then either: (1) provide instructions to the injured employee for at-home care recommendations;

or (2) refer him/her to the district’s preferred occupational health clinic. o At the conclusion of the call, a triage encounter report will be emailed to the district contact.

Caller will hear a recorded message to dial 9-1-1 if the injury is life threatening.

ANIMALS

● On Campus If a stray animal is on campus, please call the office immediately.

● Pets in the Classroom State health regulations prohibit the keeping of some types of animals in a classroom. Please check with the principal if you or

some of your students plan to bring a pet to school. In most cases students can show the animal as long as the parent brings it to

school and takes it home after the presentation. No animals are permitted on school buses.

ATTENDANCE - STUDENTS

● Daily Attendance Attendance is taken via the PowerSchool Management System two times each day. AM attendance will need to be submitted

by 8:20 a.m.; PM attendance will be taken after lunch recess. It should be taken by 1:00 p.m. It is IMPERATIVE that

attendance be taken at the assigned times on a daily basis. It is also CRUCIAL that the attendance taken is correct and

accurately reflects students present and absent.

● Student Attendance Incentives One of the factors that will contribute to student success is if they’re in school every day. This also factors into whether the

school makes AYP (adequate yearly progress). Submit “perfect attendance slips” to the office.

● We will have contests every two weeks to determine which students, classrooms, and grade levels have the best

attendance.

● Truancy/Frequent Absences At the beginning of the school year, a letter will be sent home to the parent/guardian explaining the state and district requirements

for attendance. Between five (5) and nine (9) absences, the attendance clerk will send a letter home informing parents of the

number of absences and the potential consequences for additional absences. Between ten (10) and fourteen (14) absences another

letter is sent home which further explains the state and district requirements regarding attendance. A meeting is schedule with the

parent/guardian to discuss concerns regarding absences. Between fifteen (15) and eighteen (18) days of absence a truancy hearing

will be scheduled for both the parent and student to attend. Upon the nineteenth (19) absence, a “Truancy Citation” will be

delivered to the parent/guardian for the Juvenile Court. If the child is between six or seven years old, we will cite his/her parent;

if the child is eight or older we will cite the child in juvenile court. Keeping track of absences will be a joint effort between the

homeroom teacher, Mr. Stewart and/or clerk or secretary. Our overarching goal at Sunridge is not to cite parents or students for

truancy violations. Together we need to be proactive and ensure students are in school on time on a daily basis.

ATTENDANCE - STAFF

● Staff Absences

Certified employees-If you are ill or unable to come to school, please call AESOP at 1-800-942-3767 or the Website

aesoponline.com. After calling into the AESOP system, call Ms. Lopez at 623-707-4582 and Mr. Ostrom at 623-707-4583. If

you are absent you will need to email plans to your team as well as front office staff (Mr. Ostrom, Mr. Stewart, & Ms. Lopez)

Classified employees- call Ms. Lopez at 623-707-4582 and call Mr. Stewart at 623-707-4588.

● Substitute Plans/Binders It is important that learning takes place in your absence. Make sure you’re ready for instruction before you leave school. You are

required to prepare a substitute folder which includes pertinent information regarding your class. Be sure to include a detailed

daily schedule, seating chart, the day(s)/times students leave the classroom and should return for resource, speech, or

interventions, how students get home, directions on how to proceed in case of an emergency (i.e. fire drill or lock down

procedures). Please clearly label the folder “Emergency Sub Folder” and place in on your desk.

● Accumulation of Leave Time-(10 days per year) Please review POLICY GCCA. If/when the principal is able to approve the request the staff member will be informed via

outlook/email and or personal conversation. At that time the front office will enter the absence into the AESOP system. All

leave requests must be submitted to Mr. Ostrom at least three days prior to the day(s) requested for approval. Only two (2)

certified personnel and one (1) classified personnel may request leave for the same day. No personal days will be granted to

extend to a holiday/break (i.e. the Tuesday following Labor Day holiday) or if two other staff members have already had

approved personal days. PLEASE CHECK PERSONNEL CALENDAR with Ms. Lopez. Requests will NOT be granted

for the first two weeks (before August 16th) and last two weeks of school (after May 11th).

● Leaving Early

Certified staff is required to be at school from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Each teacher has a page in the “Sign-out Log” in the

office, see Ms. Lopez. If, for any reason you will be leaving campus during the hours between 7:30 and 3:30 p.m., you must

sign-out and inform the principal/assistant principal or inform the secretary that you will be leaving campus.

BULLETIN BOARDS ● Classroom: The best materials for bulletin boards come out of the teaching-learning situation and reflect the students’

projects. Students’ self-esteem is enhanced when their work is displayed. Due to fire codes, only 20% of the room

can be covered with paper. Please do not suspend objects from the ceiling or hang them on your door. All paper

(posters, bulletin boards, etc.) must be at least 18 inches from the ceiling. It is also against fire code to have any

paper covering your classroom door inside or out.

● Cafeteria bulletin boards: Two of the cafeteria bulletin boards will be used to display K-5 artwork from Ms. Jacobs’s art class. The other will be used to

highlight student achievements.

CHILD ABUSE ● By law, school employees are mandated to report any suspected child abuse, as well as any immoral or unprofessional

conduct involving minors. Staff members are to inform the nurse and principal when child abuse is known or suspected.

The nurse and/or principal will assist the staff member in reporting the suspected abuse to the Arizona Department of

Child Safety(DCS); Abuse Hotline 1-888-SOS-CHILD or https://dcs.az.gov/ . After reporting suspected abuse, a

written report is due to Child Protective Services within 72 hours. The reporting staff member will be asked to

collaborate in the writing of this report with the person(s) who assisted in making the call. The procedure for reporting

suspected child abuse is detailed in the Fowler Elementary School District Board Policies in the office.

When a staff member responds to information that leads to suspicion of abuse, information provided by the child should be

documented. Only the following questions should be asked:

o What happened? o Who did this? o Where did this happen? o When did this happen?

If a staff member receives third party reports, the staff member should encourage the party to report the information. The staff

member should then report the information to the nurse and principal who will report to DCS. Do not conduct the child

interview. Our job is not to judge, not to investigate; just to report.

CLASSROOM / ELD CLASSROOMS ● The classroom should offer a calm, inviting, and predictable learning environment. All classrooms must have the

following posted: o Class Schedule (with minutes documented) o Lesson Objectives (student friendly) o Vocabulary / Vocabulary Word of the Week / Vowel Consonant Phoneme Chart o The 5 Classroom Rules (Whole Brain Teaching) o The “SAMMY” poster

o Grammar Wall o Language Star (ELD) o Concept Chart Posters (ELD)

CLASSROOM DISMISSAL ● Daily Dismissal- Classes are to be dismissed at the regularly scheduled times. Avoid early or late dismissals at

lunchtime, and dismissal time. A bell will ring at the beginning of school and end of school to indicate the beginning

and the end of the school day. Unless the parent sends a note or calls the school (phone calls will need to be verified by

Mr. Ostrom), you’re to send the student home as designated on the enrollment paperwork. DO NOT permit students to

use the classroom phone to call parents because they are not feeling well. Send the student to the nurse and Mrs. Nava

will make the determination. Please do not dismiss students before the bell rings. This is a safety concern as no teachers

are supervising YOUR students.

● There are three ways children go home: Primary teachers (K-2) should make name tags with the student’s name, grade, teacher’s name, phone number and designate how

they will be going home. Kinder and 1st grade students are expected to use the name tags each day all school year. All Kinder

and 1st grade students will be picked up from their classrooms. All 2nd-5th grade students will be dismissed from their classrooms

and will go to the following areas for dismissal with their grade level teacher:

-Walkers –Students that walk home are to exit the gates near the P.E. room. Students will need to pick up younger siblings (K-1)

at their classrooms. All students will be escorted to the crosswalk where a crossing guard will safely cross the students.

-Pick-ups - Parents will pick students in the back of the school (near the café). Parents are not allowed to park in the fire lane at

any time. Parents of Kinder and 1st grade students are required to park their cars and walk to classrooms.

-Buses - All buses are numbered and will be lined in the front of the school near the office. Students always are to ride their

assigned bus regardless of the driver.

● Contact Verification- During parent teacher conferences, both fall and spring, teachers will be required to verify the

address, phone numbers and mode of transportation with the parent. Submit this information to Carolina. **Keep a

class list with addresses/phone numbers with you at dismissal in case there is a question regarding a student’s

address or bus number. Provide this information to your grade level team members so they have the information

for the students they are responsible for. ● Students who do not have a bus pass will report immediately to Mr. Stewart upon arrival. A parent contact will

be made by Mr. Stewart to have their bus pass dropped off or bring $5 for a new bus pass.

CLASSROOM VISITATIONS ● Our goal is to walk through classrooms on a regular basis. During walkthroughs, we will make informal observations

which will allow us to become better acquainted with students and your teaching style. We will also provide feedback

regarding instruction as frequently as possible. If you would like us to come into your classroom and read a book, work

on a project, we would be more than happy to do so. Please let students know that while we are in the classroom

(during instruction) they can just smile at us rather than interrupt the class by saying hello.

CLASSROOMS (PRIVACY) ● All teachers and staff members are not allowed in any classroom while the classroom teacher is out (only emergencies).

You cannot use another teacher’s room to gain access to other rooms.

COMMITTEES ● Staff will be asked to serve on at least one committee, but not more than two committees. ● Committees at Sunridge will include but are not limited to:

-SLT (STEM Leadership Team)

-PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) - Carnivals, McTeacher Night, Turkey Dinner, Water Day, etc.

-ACT (Academic Content Team) -Read Across America, 100th Day, Earth Day, Science Fair, EiE Showcase, etc.

COMPUTER LABS ● Kindergarten will schedule time in the library computer lab. Students will work on Code.org, Starfall, Reading Eggs,

etc. as frequently as possible.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT PLAN ● Fire Drills- We will conduct a fire drill on a monthly basis. During a fire drill make sure to walk your students to your

designated area in an orderly fashion, remember to bring your roster, and red/white cards & emergency backpack. Hold

up red cards to indicate that students are missing and the white card to indicate that all students are accounted for.

Remember to leave your doors unlocked. You should be the last one to leave the classroom to ensure no students are left

in the classroom. ● Lock Downs- We will plan two lock downs during the fall and spring semesters. ● Bus Evacuation Drill- We will be scheduled at a minimum of once every school year. All students in attendance will

be required to participate in the bus evacuation drill. ● Emergency Evacuation- Sunridge has an emergency evacuation plan in place. If an emergency arose and our students

and staff needed to evacuate our campus the students would all be transported by bus to another site.

CURRICULUM ● Reading- McGraw Hill “Wonders” Program is the district provided curriculum for reading instruction. ● Writing- Writer’s Workshop/Units of Writing by Lucy Calkins is a tool used to teach writing; Language Arts curriculum

is also provided. ● Handwriting-Handwriting without Tears (K-3) ● Math- Into Math by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is the district provided curriculum provided for teaching mathematics. ● Social Studies- Impact by McGraw Hill Social Studies is the district provided curriculum provided to teach social. ● Science- Kinder – uses ECHOS & EIE, 1st -5th uses EIE & Scott Foresman, which is the district adopted curriculum to

teach science. ● EiE- Engineering is Elementary curriculum is a science based thematic teaching curriculum that will be implemented K-

5th ● Supplemental materials- No curriculum is 100% aligned to the Arizona and/or Common Core State Standards.

Teachers are required to supplement the curriculum when needed to expose students to all the required standards.

CURRICULUM MATERIALS ● If resource materials are needed contact Ms. Watson (74581) or Ms. Duvall (74593) to check out materials. All resource

materials must be checked out before removing them from the library. All resources that have been checked out need

to be returned to Ms. Watson or Ms. Duvall as part of our end-of-year checkout process.

DATA BINDERS ● All teachers are expected to track student data via the online google sheet.

DRESS CODE

Staff Dress Code: ● Excessive tattooing and body piercing(s) must be covered or removed to avoid distraction. Administration will determine

if visible tattoos and piercings are excessive. ● Professional necklines. Shirts/blouses buttoned appropriately ● No tank tops or t-shirts, no “spaghetti straps” ● No sandals (beach shoes) ● Skirts, skorts, & dresses - no more than 2” above the knee

● No denim is permitted except on Buck a Jean day ● No shorts, Capri pants/shorts must be mid-calf in length. ● Spirit shirts must have a collar and will be limited to once a month ● Please note that during special events (e.g. assemblies, music programs, open house/parent orientation nights, etc.)

you are ALL to dress appropriately and professionally). ● Field Trips- Staff are never allowed to dress “below” the students. Students are required to wear uniforms on

field trips; teachers are not permitted to “dress down”.

Dress Code-Student & Staff “Spirit Days” ● Spirit days/Buck-a-Jean days will be held on the following Fridays, district-wide: August 30th , September 27th, October

25th, November 22nd, December 20th, January 31st, February 28th, March 27th, April 24th, and May 15th. ● Staff may only wear non-collared school shirts on designated spirit days as noted above. ● Principals have the discretion to designate other “incentive days” to promote parent or student participation. For

example, the school may reward the families/students for their participation in Parent Academies by giving them a “dress

down pass.” The principal can designate which day the ticket will be honored.

DUTIES ● Please refer to the duty schedules for morning, lunch, and dismissal duties. (Page 27)

EARLY DISMISSAL ● Every Thursday, the students will be dismissed at 1:15 to afford staff members time for planning purposes, attending

trainings, or meetings. A calendar has been provided for you for your information.

EATING, DRINKING & SMOKING ● Students are not to eat candy or chew gum in the classrooms this also applies to staff. ● Do not carry open hot drinks on campus or leave them unattended when students are in your room. ● Please do not send your student(s) to the café to have your cup filled with ice. ● In keeping with the state law, using tobacco products on school grounds is prohibited.

EMAIL ● Ongoing communications and announcements will be made via email. Please be sure to check your email daily.

ENTERING STUDENTS ● When a new student enrolls, all homeroom teachers will receive a copy of his/her enrollment information, transportation

info, and a 45-day screener. The 45-day screener must be completed for all students enrolled for at least 20 days but NO

later than the 45th calendar day that the student has been enrolled. Complete all 45 day screeners and turn them into Mr.

Stewart. New students will begin the day they enroll. Please make them feel WELCOMED!

EVALUATIONS ● Teacher evaluation is an ongoing process throughout the school year. Continuing teachers will have at least one formal

evaluation every year. Probationary (1-3 years) teachers will receive at least two formal evaluations every year until

they achieve continuing status. Evaluation of Teachers may be conducted by any of Fowler District Administrators.

Each formal evaluation will consist of (1) preconference; (2) a minimum of one uninterrupted lesson; and (3) post

conference within five working days of the observation. Evaluations will be scheduled via email and outlook. A

training of the expectations of a formal evaluation will be given before the end of the first quarter to all certified staff

members.

FIELD TRIPS Sunridge Elementary School’s philosophy is that all students benefit from field trips and encourage teachers to take them.

Field Trip Guidelines:

1. The trip must reinforce the integrated STEM Thematic unit of study.

2. Call the location of the field trip and transportation department to make sure the date is open for both of them.

3. The homeroom teacher must complete the Field Trip Request form and submit for the principal’s approval. Once approved,

the secretary will complete a Bus Request form and submit it to the Transportation Department for approval. (If a Purchase

Order is required, the teacher must fill out a requisition and submit to the principal.)

4. Permission Slips must be signed by a parent/guardian for each student going on the Field Trip.

5. In general, one adult must be available to chaperone every ten students in addition to the teacher. ALL

STUDENTS/TEACHERS MUST RIDE THE BUS TO AND FROM THE FIELD TRIP. Only students enrolled in the Fowler

School District may ride the bus. **Chaperones must read and sign the chaperone agreement.**

6. Please notify the office, by email, of any students that are not attending the field trip and the classrooms they will be

assigned to. Parents must be notified ahead of time (approx. two weeks) that their son/daughter will not be attending

the field trip for disciplinary problems. YOU MUST SEE MR. OSTROM BEFORE CONTACTING A PARENT

REGARDING THIS ISSUE.

7. Field trips may depart from school sometime after 8:45 a.m. and must arrive back at school by 2:00 p.m.

8. A copy of the permission slips need to be left at the office and a copy is to be taken on the field trip!

9. Contact Mrs. Nava, at least 24 hours prior to the trip, so she can prepare student(s) medication.

10. If a teacher must cancel a field trip, transportation needs to be notified twenty-four (24) hours in advance.

11. In the event of an emergency, you’re in charge.

12. Due to safety and liability issues, neither children of staff members nor siblings of students (at other grade levels, etc.) may

attend field trips.

13. All students must wear a name tag identifying them as students at Sunridge Elementary.

14. Conduct a head count on the bus prior to leaving Sunridge and upon your return from the field trip destination.

15. Make sure that you have bus cards for all students.

FIRE DRILLS/LOCK DOWNS ● Fire Drills- A fire drill is scheduled once a month. Evacuation areas are the Kinder playground, the large playground to the

east and the front landscaping area in the front of the school. At no time should the emergency path or gate areas be blocked.

In the event of a fire alarm, all classes should proceed quietly, quickly and orderly to the evacuation area assigned via the

routes indicated on your evacuation map which is to be located near your emergency exit door. Staff members are to be the

last ones out of the room and must have their class list and emergency bag with them. The lights are to be left on and the door

unlocked but closed. Once at the designated evacuation spot, the staff member must take roll and account for all students. If

all students are accounted for then the white card will be held up. If not all students are accounted for then the red card will be

held up. When notified by the bells, return to your classroom. All staff members not in charge of children will use the exit

nearest them and proceed to area where extra assistance may be needed. ● Lock Down- A lock down will be scheduled each semester. The teacher will follow the guidelines in the Fowler Elementary

School District Classroom Emergency Response Guide. Specific procedures for Sunridge have been developed and are to be

followed. 504/MEDICAL ALERT PLANS

● 504 or Medical Alert Plans- 504 or medical alert plans are developed for all students who may have special needs. The

504 or Medical Alert Plan states the student’s condition and a plan of action for all staff members to follow. Please

notify the principal and or assistant principal of any student that may be in need of a 504 or a Medical Alert Plan.

GRADEBOOK ● All teachers K-8 will issue letter grades A-F for all classes including special area and SPED classes. ● SPED students’ grades are based off of their IEP goals.

● Teachers will attach standards in Gradebook for Reading, Writing and Math ● All grades need to be in Gradebook by midnight on the assigned dates. Dates will be determined and communicated via

email. ● On the report card, Work Habit comments must be entered for the final grade. ● The lowest score that a student can receive is 50%, for any and all assignments. ● Gradebooks must be maintained on a weekly basis. ● Input weekly grades for reading homework in the work habits section of your gradebook.

HARASSMENT ● Sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Sexual harassment is considered any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for

sexual favors and other verbal, graphic, written or physical conduct of a sexual nature, or targeted towards someone

because of his/her gender, which is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive to interfere with a person’s learning or

work environment. ● All forms of harassment are forbidden and will not be tolerated; including harassment based on sex (gender), race, color,

religion, national origin, age, disability or veteran status. ● Any person who feels unlawfully discriminated against or to have been the victim of unlawful discrimination by an agent

or employee of the District may file a complaint. The District is committed to investigating each complaint and to taking

appropriate action on all confirmed violations of policy. Any employee found to have engaged in unlawful harassment is

subject to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.

HOMEWORK POLICY ● Objective- The use of homework is encouraged as a means of extending the amount of time that students devote to

learning, as well as providing time to reinforce skills learned in the classroom or completing regular classroom

assignments. Homework may also be used effectively to build self-discipline, develop independence and responsibility,

as well as learn to study effectively and use time wisely. Home study allows students to make up work missed due to

absence, to take advantage of unique community resources, and to make “real-life” applications of concepts learned in

class. ● Guidelines- Each homework assignment must address specific purposes that are consistent with the ongoing activities of

the class. Homework should directly relate to upcoming activities, or reinforce, enrich or extend a classroom learning

experience. Homework should be individualized as much as possible to meet student needs. Assignments should only be as lengthy as is necessary for the student to demonstrate knowledge of the concept, or

develop/reinforce a skill, etc. NOTE: Teachers should not assign forty problems if fifteen will demonstrate competence.

Homework is NOT to be used as a disciplinary measure.

● Communication- Communication between teachers and parents regarding homework is essential. Parents need to be

advised of what is expected of their children and how they can reinforce the learning potential of the work assigned.

Each teacher should develop suggestions for parents regarding homework; you may work as a grade level to develop a

format.

HOMEWORK POLICY cont. In general, teachers are to limit the amount of homework given per day to elementary students to the following amounts:

Kindergarten 10 minutes Third Grade 25 minutes

First Grade 15 minutes Fourth Grade 30 minutes

Second Grade 20 minutes Fifth Grade 40 minutes ● Be Creative- Homework should not be a packet of redundant material. Explore alternative methods of reinforcing

what’s been taught at school for reinforcement at home. ● Mr. Ostrom’s Daily Reading Homework- Recommended reading guidelines:

ILLNESS - STUDENT ● If a student becomes ill, send him/her to the Health Office with a nurse’s pass. Passes are required for all students.

This lets the nurse know their name, why they are there, and the person who sent them. Emergencies such as: nose

bleeds, injuries, and vomiting are an exception to the rule. Please take time to learn the nature of the complaint and try

to discourage students with minor complaints. When children come in complaining of feeling sick in the mornings do not

hesitate to send them in to be checked. A temperature of 98.6 is considered normal, 100.3 or above is usually considered

a fever. If the child looks sick, is not feeling well and does not have a fever the parents may still be called. Each case is

judged individually. Over the counter medication will not be given after 1:30 pm because it is too close to dismissal. ● DO NOT permit students to use the classroom phone to call parents because they are not feeling well. Send the student

to the nurse and Mrs. Nava will make the determination. ● Medications MUST be brought in by parents. The District Medication Policy states: “The student may NOT carry or

administer their own medications except with special written permission from their doctor. State mandates

require ALL medications to be in a locked cabinet when on campus.” Cough drops and throat lozenges are

considered medication. They are allowed to be given as long as the parent fills out the necessary forms, and the

student reports to the nurse to get them. ● Lice: If you suspect lice send the student to be checked. Scratching behind the ears or at the back of the neck is a

symptom. Most calls received are from parents saying the found lice in the child’s hair. This is the cycle: The eggs are

incubated by body heat and hatch in 10 to 14 days. Once the eggs hatch, nymphs leave the shell casing, grow for about 9

to 12 days, and mate, and females lay eggs. If not treated, this cycle may repeat itself every 3 weeks. Schools are not the

most common places where head lice are spread. Sleep-overs among friends and relatives are thought to be a common

way they are passed home to home. ● Students are required to have a Playground or Nurse’s pass to go to the Health Office. Stress to the students that they

should NOT go to the Health Office during recess or a special class unless they received a pass. If the Nurse sends a

student home, she will inform the teacher and the secretary. Students are not to call from rooms. No medication will be

given after 1:30 pm, unless there is a prescription from the doctor saying otherwise. Please send only emergencies after

2:00 pm. Emergencies are: broken bones, barfing, breathing problems, bleeding.

KEYS ● All employees are given a room, file cabinet, and cupboard keys. Keys will be checked out to staff at the beginning of

the school year and checked back in on or before the last contract day for the individual staff member. Staff members

will be charged a replacement fee if keys are lost. During the school day, ALL doors must be unlocked except when

classrooms are left unattended.

LESSON PLANS ● Lesson plans will be created using a school wide template and are due every Monday. The link must be shared with Mr.

Ostrom & Mr. Stewart by 8 a.m. each Monday morning. The following must be included in daily lesson plans:

STANDARD/DOK 1-4: Write the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards that will be addressed in your lesson.

LANGUAGE OBJECTIVE: Objectives should be written in language form. Examples: Students will solve word

problems using the CUBE method and will write the steps used to solve the problem.

ACTIVITY: Activities should be based on the lesson objectives and should progress daily.

VOCABULARY: Weekly school wide vocab as well as content specific vocabulary should be integrated

LOUNGE/STAFF DINING ROOM ● The teachers’ lounge should always be kept clean. Please wash your dirty dishes and clean up after yourself. Everyone

should refrain from keeping food in the refrigerator for a long period of time. If using the microwave, be sure to cover

your food and clean up any spills.

LUNCH BUDDIES ● Teachers are encouraged to eat lunch with their class or students that are in need of some extra TLC on a weekly basis.

LUNCH/BREAKFAST PROGRAM ● Breakfast- Students and homeroom teachers will be provided breakfast, free of charge, in the classroom every morning

from 7:45-8:00. If a student arrives after 8:05, breakfast will not be provided to them. o BIC Procedures

1. We will “offer” students menu items rather than “serve” them a full meal

2. Students must take at least 1 item from the “Fruit/Vegetable/Juice”

3. Student meals must equal at least 3 points (each item is awarded a point value)

4. If the student takes a total of three points, or more, it is recorded as a meal

5. You can have a sharing table, however, all food must be discarded when breakfast is over

▪ Mark “B” if the student took a meal, mark “X” if the student declined a meal or mark “A” if the

student is absent. ▪ If a child is absent those items need to be returned to the kitchen. ▪ Designate a “sharing table” where students can place unopened items they choose not to eat. ▪ Once breakfast is over, the food/beverages MUST be thrown away. They cannot go into a classroom

refrigerator, saved for a snack, or given to the school nurse. ▪ Place the money bag with the completed roster inside of the breakfast bag. ▪ Set the bags, garbage bag (tied up) and any meals not served outside the classroom immediately

following breakfast service. ● Lunch Money- Student lunch money will be collected during student breakfast and taken to the cafeteria. When

checking off which students have received breakfast collect lunch money and indicate the totals on the breakfast “check

sheet”. If a student does not have the correct amount of money in their account there are no charges for that days lunch,

the student will be given a sandwich and milk. When he/she does not have money in his/her account and also given a

reminder from the lunch cashier. The cafeteria clerk will maintain the free and reduced lunch accounts. If the students

do not have funds in their lunch account, they will pay as they go through the line. The students will eat lunch at their

assigned table. ● All students are required to line up alphabetically prior to entering the cafeteria, and as they proceeded through the

lunch line. ● Staff- Staff members may purchase individual lunches for $2.85. Staff members are welcome to create a personal lunch

account.

MAILBOXES ● Mailboxes are located in the administration building. Please check your mailboxes in the morning, during the noon hour,

and after school for messages and/or notices.

MASCOT/SCHOOL COLORS ● The Sunridge school mascot is Sammy the Sidewinder. Our school colors are navy blue and yellow.

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT ● Meet the teacher night will be held before school begins during our “welcome back week”. Meet the teacher Night is an

opportunity to meet your students and parents. You may also discuss basic classroom expectations and share other

pertinent information.

MEDIA CENTER ● Media center hours are from 7:35 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classes will be regularly scheduled in the library throughout the

week. Students may check out books at any time the librarian is present. ● All teachers have a library account, when you need materials (ie. books, resource materials, technology, etc.) it’s

required that teachers check out all materials so they can be accounted for at any given time. ● As teachers check our materials (ie. books, resource materials, technology, etc.) they assume the responsibility for the

items. Lost and or damaged items may need to be replaced by the individuals that checked them out.

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS ● Kid News- Morning Announcements will be pre recorded. Ms. Watson will place the daily news in our Sunridge

“Shared Folder”. Please make it a point to watch the news on a daily basis, important information will be shared via

Kidnews. Each class shall observe a “moment of silence” and the Pledge of Allegiance. If individuals who for religious

reasons, do not participate in the Pledge of Allegiance, they shall not interfere with the service. ● Announcements- If you have an announcement you wish to share please email [email protected] no later than 7:30

a.m.

NEWSLETTERS ● Classroom- It is required that each teacher send one (1) class story via class Dojo each week to the parents. If not one

class story then make positive contact with each parent at least twice a month. ● School- In an ongoing effort to maintain good communication between the school and home, we will publish a monthly

Parent Newsletter listing school and district events. They will be sent home around the first of each month.

OFFICE ATMOSPHERE ● In order to maintain a professional environment, the office should reflect a friendly, business-like atmosphere conducive

to the efficient operation of the school. Please do not congregate in the front office and carry on casual conversations.

This quickly becomes an issue due to the acoustics of our office space. The respect and courtesies we display in the

presence of visitors are vital to our positive image. ● Never engage in conversations regarding students using their name.

ORIENTATION WEEK The following are suggested tasks during Orientation Week-Friday July 26th

1. Set-up your classroom.

2. Make transportation name tags for dismissal.

3. Review student cumulative records.

4. Familiarize yourself with the curriculum.

5. Check out needed curriculum items and equipment.

6. Prepare general supplies for your classroom.

7. Become familiar with the Staff Handbook.

8. Review and prepare a letter to parents explaining your classroom expectations and homework policy.

PARENT COMMUNICATION ● To improve our parent communication, you will need to utilize class Dojo (See attachment below) parent communication

app. This app allows teachers to communicate with parents via text messaging. The app allows text to be translated,

one-way, and scheduled to assist with parent communication.

PARENT ORIENTATION NIGHT/TITLE I PARENT MEETING ● Administration will hold a parent meeting in the café sometime during the first two weeks of school. This meeting will

inform parents as to our school letter grade and previous years academic successes. The Title I program will also be

discussed with parents. ● Teachers will have an opportunity to share their classroom expectations, curriculum, homework expectations, and other

information regarding student’s education.

PARENT REQUEST OR COMPLAINTS ● If a parent has a request or complaint, the principal/assistant principal will meet with the parent and may request a

meeting with the staff member and parent. The teacher will always be notified of the request and/or complaints.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES ● Parent Teacher Conferences are held during the first and third grading periods. Conferences will be held for 5 days

providing as many opportunities to meet with parents as possible. Conferences should be positive with emphasis on

what the child “can do” versus what he/she “can’t do”. The teacher will be asked to turn in a Parent-Teacher Summary

form of the number of conferences and recommendations for improvement. 100% conference participation is expected,

if parents are unable or unwilling to attend their child’s conference we (administration and homeroom teacher) will visit

the students home. We are professionals; please take the opportunity that the parent teacher conference offers, to

reinforce that fact. Consider things such as: scheduling sibling(‘s) conference(s) on the same day, provide a translator if

needed, offering comfortable seating for parents, comfortable seating for waiting parents, professional dialogue, provide

suggestions of how to assist the child at home, etc. Conferences will be scheduled for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Schedule 30 minute conferences for those that may need a translator. ● Special Area teachers will also participate in conferences. They will meet with 20% of the grade level that they formally

assess for group “B” testing. (Art-5th grade, P.E.-4th grade, Music-3rd grade)

PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION ● The Parent Teacher Organization will begin meeting and organizing events beginning first quarter.

PARKING ● Staff members should park in the northwest (back) parking lot when available. Please reserve the south (front) parking

lot for parents.

PARTIES ● There are several occasions when class parties are typically held. Please limit your class parties for “special” occasions

and make them incentive based (for example, our class will have an end of the quarter class party if we collectively meet

our quarterly benchmark goals). ● If you wish to have a class party in honor of a holiday, please be sensitive to those students who cannot participate for

religious purposes. Parties will be up to the teacher’s discretion; however, please make sure students are not required to

purchase gifts, supplies, or refreshments. ● No parties shall be held before lunch. This is in violation of the Federal Food Service that supplements our lunch

program. ● When planning a classroom party please contact Mr. Ostrom prior to doing so.

PAYCHECKS ● Paychecks stubs will be placed in your mailbox after lunch every other Tuesday or sent via email. Live checks must be

signed out from the front office. Please check to see that the deductions are accurate. During intersessions, paychecks

will be distributed according to an adjusted schedule. PERMANENT STUDENT RECORD CARDS & CUMULATIVE RECORDS

● The students’ permanent record cards and cumulative files are kept in the office vault. The permanent record cards are

irreplaceable and are to remain on campus, in the administrative building at all times. Certified personnel may review

student cumulative files at any time.

PERSONAL PHONE CALLS ● Unless it is an emergency, personal phone calls will not be transferred into classrooms during instructional time. Cell

phones are to be turned off during the day. You may make phone calls before or after school and during your lunch

hour. Please do not have friends or family call directly into classrooms or lounges where there is a phone.

PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION ● Students are to remain on the playground before school and at lunchtime. There will be adult supervision on both

playgrounds from 7:30 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. each morning. Supervising staff members are expected to be alert and move

throughout the play area to ensure high visibility. ● All students should be sent to the playground from 7:35-7:45.

PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS ● It is imperative that staff members conduct themselves in a professional manner befitting the high standards associated

with the profession of teaching. Professionalism is an umbrella term which includes many areas of conduct. Some of

these include: o Dress professionally. o Adhere to staff work hours and calendar. The staff work day begins at 7:30 a.m. The morning bell rings at 7:45 a.m.

Please be at your designated area to pick up your students immediately to begin instruction in your classrooms.

Students are released at 3:00 p.m. The staff work day ends at 3:30 p.m. after all of your students are off campus.

Staff are expected to stay until 3:30 p.m. on Thursdays for teacher professional development and teacher planning. o Interact with peers and staff in a positive, respectful manner. o Interact with parents in a positive manner showing respect even if you don’t agree with them. o Treat all of our students with the utmost respect. Yelling at students is never necessary. Put-downs are difficult on

some students’ already low self-esteem: If a student needs to be reprimanded, it needs to be done in privacy. o The district does not allow corporal punishment. Corporal punishment will not be administered to any student under

any circumstance by any district or school staff member. Remember to use a hands-off approach. o Exhibit a positive attitude/ willingness to be a team member. Model positive interpersonal skills (i.e. tactful,

courteous, respects others opinions, can disagree in an appropriate manner). o Attendance and punctuality at staff meetings, staff development trainings, committee meetings and school functions

is expected. o Call the AESOP by 6:00 a.m. for all absences. Leave your name, grade level, school and reason for absence. You

must have a Substitute Folder already submitted to the office and lesson plans visible on your desk. o Do not transport students in personal vehicles due to liability. o Smoking is not allowed in any school building or grounds. o Make sure you are at your duty, in your room, or designated duty site, on time. Should there be an injury to a

student and you are not present, you will be held liable. o Remember that email is a public record. All email should be treated as a postcard that others may be reading. Email

should be deleted as soon as possible. When in doubt, don’t send it. o Properly store and secure all technology and curricular resources within your possession. Materials checked out to

you are your responsibility. The classroom teacher will need to develop check-in & check-out procedures that track

student use. Technology resources should always be stored in a locked secure space (cabinets, file cabinet, drawers,

etc.) to assist in theft prevention.

PROPOSITION 301 ● Prop 301 percentages and goals will be voted on district wide each school year. Typically, to earn Prop 301 monies you

will be required to produce the following: o School Data 10% o Data Binder/Google Sheet 15% o Technology (webpage) 15% o Individual Teacher Performance 45% o Quarterly Curriculum Mapping 15%

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH ● The Fowler Elementary School District encourages employees to continue to advance educationally. In order to receive

district credit or to be advanced on the salary schedule, you must complete a Course Approval form and have the

Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services sign it. Forms are located in our H.R. department; they can be

contacted by calling the district office at 623 707-4500.

PROGRESS REPORTS ● Progress reports shall be given to all students (K-5). Parents will sign the progress report indicating they have received

it. Teachers will record, on a class roster, which students have returned their progress reports. Once all students have

returned their progress reports teachers will sign and submit their roster to Mr. Ostrom’s mailbox. Progress reports are

to be sent home during the following weeks: September 3rd, November 12th, February 3rd, and April 13th.

PROMOTION AND RETENTION ● It shall be the policy of the Fowler School District to observe the letter of the Arizona Attorney General’s Opinion No.

180-145. This clearly states that the decision to promote or retain students is the duty of the homeroom teacher. When a

student is recommended for retention, it is important that the teacher maintains supporting documentation. In all cases

involving pupil retention, parents must be informed that there are concerns during the first quarter conference. You

must invite Mr. Stewart or Mr. Ostrom to that conference. During the third quarter conference if you are still

considering retaining a student(s) you must request information from Mr. Ostrom and invite Mr. Stewart or Mr.

Ostrom to attend the conference. Mr. Ostrom and the TST team will review each student on a case by case basis. All

retention determinations will be made during the last two weeks of school in individual parent meetings.

STUDENT PROMOTION/RETENTION CALENDAR OF EVENTS ● First Parent Conference------------------------ During parent conferences, or thereafter, the teacher may verbally advise

the parents of student’s progress. The teacher will also make suggestions to the parents and students about how to

improve their child’s performance and reduce chances for retention. ● End of 2nd & 3rd Grading Periods----------- Names of students selected for retention consideration and the homeroom

teacher will turn forms in to the Principal at the end of the second quarter. The homeroom teacher and principal will

notify the parent of consideration of retention and offer suggestions for improvement during a scheduled conference and

document the contact. The process may be initiated for any student. Also, a name may be dropped from consideration

when that student improves. All additions or deletions must be approved by the Principal. During third quarter

conferences, the final recommendation will be made to parents. Appropriate paperwork will be presented at that time ● First Week in May------------------------------ The teacher completes the Retention Referral and Light’s Retention Scale.

The team completes the Promotion/Retention Recommendation. ● Last Week of School---------------------------- The principal sends a letter of NOTIFICATION OF RETENTION to the

parents of each student to be retained. **If a parent does not agree with the retention, he/she may request a promotion/retention hearing by the Governing Board.

● The Last Days of School----------------------- Report cards go home. Final official notice of retention is also stated on

report cards and noted on the permanent record card of those retained.

RAINY/EXCESSIVE HEAT DAY SCHEDULE ● Procedures-Specific rainy day procedures will be given to all staff members in advance

1. Morning and/or afternoon recesses will be canceled if weather prohibits outdoor activity.

2. Teachers will bring their students to the cafeteria and may leave for a thirty-minute duty-free lunch. All duty

personnel should report to the cafeteria to take students to an indoor classroom.

3. If a teacher needs a break during the day, please ask a teammate to watch your classroom or call the office.

4. High Pollution days students will remain in the café to participate in an indoor activity.

REFRIGERATION/HEATING CLASSROOMS ● Thermostats are all programed by district personnel. If a change in temperature is desired, please contact the office and

adjustments will be made. DOORS ARE TO BE CLOSED, AT ALL TIMES, IF THE AIR CONDITIONER OR

HEATER IS ON.

REPORT CARDS - EVALUATION OF STUDENTS ● Teacher observation, samples of student’s work, and informal assessments are the basis for evaluating students. The

district report card will be used for all students. Additional reports may be used for reading and math assessments.

Midterm progress reports will be used for all Kindergarten through Fifth grade students.

REQUISITIONS ● All requisitions are to be completed and given to the principal for approval. The principal will enter the original to the

Computer Purchasing System. The principal will retain a copy, and give a copy to the individual requesting materials.

When the materials are received, the packing slip must be initialed and dated by the person inspecting the package. The

packing slip must be returned to the secretary. All receipts must be signed and dated. Reminder, you will not be

reimbursed if you buy materials prior to approval.

ROOM ARRANGEMENTS ● Rooms should be arranged so they are conducive to your instructional style, however, make sure that all furniture is

stable and will not fall over if bumped or pushed.

ROOM CHECK PRIOR TO LEAVING ● Before leaving school each day make sure that all electronics are turned off and the door is locked. Make sure there are

no balloons or materials in your room that may set off the security system motion detectors. To facilitate the cleaning of

the room, the students are to stack their chairs and remove ANY loose litter from the floor.

SAMMY AWARD

Every Thursday we will recognize our “SAMMY” Students of the week. Please send one student to the library at 2:40

on Wednesday afternoon be recognized on Kidnews.

SCHOOL HOURS ● Kinder through fifth grade will begin school at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. The professional day for certified

personnel is 7:30-3:30; however, teachers are to remain on campus until all of their students have made it home.

SCHOOL WIDE EVENTS ● The Sunridge parents are expected to be involved in our school. In order to create a strong partnership we will continue

to promote the following events: Meet the Teacher Night, Title I parent nights, Scholastic Book Fair, Community

Thanksgiving Dinner, Art Shows, Science Fairs, Quarterly Honor Assemblies, Music Concerts, Curriculum Nights,

Community Carnivals and, EiE Showcase events to be held each quarter. ● School Wide Events, as determined by our leadership team, are mandatory for all certified staff. If you have a conflict

you must have prior approval form Mr. Ostrom before missing an event.

SITE LEADERSHIP TEAM ● The Site Council plays a vital decision making role regarding curriculum and instruction for our school and is comprised

of the following: certified and classified staff member, parents, assistant principal, and the principal.

SPECIAL CLASSES ● All 1st– 5th grade students will receive one forty-minute period of art, music, P.E. and technology, and Kinder students

will receive one thirty-minute period of art, music, physical education, library, and technology every week. This

common prep time is to be used for planning purposes; please refer to your schedules.

STAFF MEETINGS 1. Staff Meeting – 1:30-3:30 on early release Thursdays. All staff members are to be present and on time. If you

have any information you would like to share, please contact Mr. Ostrom or Mr. Stewart.

Each classroom will be lined up

on the basketball court.

SUPPLIES ● District Warehouse- All the supplies that are furnished by the district warehouse will be ordered by the front office

staff. Supplies will be stocked in the supply room. When you need supplies please ask the front office staff and they

will assist you. If additional supplies are needed, please discuss your needs with the principal.

TRANSLATION OF INFORMATION IN SPANISH ● Written Communication- In an ongoing attempt to create good communication between the school and the community,

we will send all correspondence home in both English and Spanish. ● Oral Communication- We will have interpreters available during Open House and Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please

notify the office if you need assistance.

TEACHER EXPECTATIONS ● Create and submit a grade level instructional schedule to include a common reading, writing, math, science/social

studies. ● Meet weekly with grade level to plan lessons, review data, and share teaching strategies. Agendas with sign-ins of

meetings, and grade level lesson plans are to be submitted weekly. ● Update quarterly substitute teacher plans. ● Submit weekly lesson plans via Planbookedu (ELD teachers) via google sheets for all general ed teachers & share

w/admin. ● Maintain a positive attitude with teammates

TEACHER SUPPORT REFERRALS (TST) ● All staff members will refer their bottom 15% of students for academics through the TST process to Mrs. Duvall. All

staff will refer any students with behavior and or social emotional concerns to Mr. Stewart. Teachers can access the

proper TST forms online in our shared folder. The Teacher Support Team will meet to discuss each referral. A follow-

up date will be determined to assess his/her progress. Only if the student has been previously enrolled in a special

education program or is severely disabled can the Principal or Special Education Director decide to suspend the referral

process.

VIDEOS ● Educational Videos- Educational videos must contain information within your grade level content. ● Incentive Videos- Incentive videos must have a “G” rating. If you wish to view a “PG” rated video you must obtain

permission from the principal first. Following approval from the principal you must also get permission from the

parents. Regardless of the video rating, you must first complete the “Video Request” and await approval by the principal.

Once approval is granted the librarian will program the video distribution system so you will be able to view the video at

the designated time in your classroom.

VISITORS ● Visitors are welcome on campus. For the safety of our students, we ask that every visitor comes to the office, signs in,

and receives either a Visitor or Volunteer badge. For the ease of identification, we ask that all staff members wear their

badges too. ● Parents should make prior arrangements with the teacher if they plan to visit/volunteer in the classroom. ● Teachers will notify the front office of planned visits. ● Front office will notify the teacher when a visitor/volunteer arrives.

VOICEMAIL ● Ensure that your voicemail has been set up with your name, grade and the best time to reach you, etc. If you need

assistance with this, please contact Mrs. Watson. All phone messages will be sent to your voicemail during teaching

hours.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM ● Volunteers are welcomed at Sunridge. Possible opportunities include but are not limited to: PTO (work with the parent

group to plan school wide events), Assist with morning arrival (supervise students, assist with parking lot, etc.), Assist

with afternoon dismissal (supervise students, assist with parking lot, etc.), Assist with lunch (supervise students in the

café), Assist with recess (supervise students on the playground, soccer, football, etc.), Room parent (help with daily

classroom activities), Library assistant (help to organize and shelve books).

WEEKLY GRADE LEVEL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ● Grade level teams will meet every other Thursday to receive professional development at their assigned time.

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS ● When a student withdraws from the school, the secretary will notify the homeroom teacher by email. Teachers may be

asked to submit any personal items to the office and any pertinent information (i.e. progress report, etc.)

WRITING PORTFOLIO ● Student portfolios will be kept in the teachers’ classrooms. A minimum of three (3) writing samples, based on genre

focus areas, must be dated and included for each grade level. Sunridge Lockdown Procedures:

1. You will be notified of a lockdown situation via the intercom/telephone system. You will hear “This

is a Lockdown”

2. If a lockdown has been initiated immediately turn off your lights and lock your door. Before locking

your door look outside your classroom, if there are students pull them into your classroom.

Students should stay away from windows and doors.

i. Room 406 & 408 check and clear all students from the playground.

ii. Room 405 clear all students from the 400 building restrooms.

iii. Room 305 clear all students from the 300 building restrooms.

iv. Room 600 clear all students from the 500 building restrooms.

v. Music Teacher: Clear all P.E. students

1. Take attendance and identify where all of your students are.

2. Do not email or use the phone keep all lines of communication open, someone from the office will

call your classroom and only you should answer the phone. Office personnel will ask you to

account for all of your students. If you have students that are in attendance but not in your

classroom be prepared to quickly explain their whereabouts.

3. Continue to teach as usual, keep a calm but serious classroom environment. Your students do not

have to be silent but voices should be low. General rule of thumb, you should not be able to hear

your neighbor, they should not hear you!

4. You will be notified that the lockdown is over via the intercom/telephone system. You will hear “All

clear”

5. Never, Never allow students to leave your classroom or open your door during a lockdown!

Sunridge Fire Drill Procedures:

All fire drills are timed, our goal is to quickly vacate the school building and ensure that all students remain

safe.

1. Close your classroom door as you exit, DO NOT lock the door

2. Take your red/white cards (Red cards = students missing, white = all students accounted for)

3. Take a student roster with your “Go Bag”

4. Post-it notes: You will be accountable for quickly knowing who is present, who was absent and who

is missing. If you are missing students write their names on the post-it note and hand it to the

administrator.
