Hanson Elementary School Mission and Vision Statement

Hanson Elementary SchoolMissionLearning is the fundamental purpose of Hanson Elementary School. We are dedicated to providing an outstanding education to the student body by creating a collaborative learning community centered on academic excellence and our core values. Hanson, in partnership with students, parents and community members, will prepare responsible, engaged citizens capable of success in high school and college and equipped to be leaders of the future.

Vision To become a premiere Title One School in Colorado where 80% of our students meet

state proficiency targets by 2014.

To provide collaboratively planned, well-prepared lessons in all content areas for students that are rigorous, engaging, and contain explicit teacher modeling of the expected learning outcome.

To provide targeted instruction for second language learners that include daily English Language Development time and sheltered content area instruction. The goal at Hanson is to provide the resources and skills for students to become fluent in the English language. All teachers will provide comprehensible instruction that develops fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. After five years of instruction, students at Hanson will achieve Fluent English Proficiency status.

To use data thoughtfully to drive all instruction. We are willing to examine all practices in light of their impact on learning.   Individuals and teams seek relevant data and information and use that information to promote continuous improvement. We assess our effectiveness on the basis of results rather than intentions.

To create a professional learning environment that inspires all staff members to learn and grow both individually and collectively. We realize that our greatest growth comes from the power of collaboration. Each team member is a leader in the change process at Hanson.

To engage and involve students and parents in the learning process. We will create a systematic homework program that includes a parent participation component. Our Parent Liaison will provide training and support to parents. The learning environment will support student empowerment through goal setting, core values, and the Positive Behavior Support program.

Core ValuesRespect Appreciating the value of a person or an object

through your words, actions and attitude – treating people appropriately with common courtesy

Responsibility Able to be trusted and or depended upon to complete tasks, follow directions and own up to your actions

Doing Your Best Putting your best effort into everything you do

Hanson Staff,

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year. It is going to be an amazing school year. After four years of focused reformed work we now move out of the turnaround grant and must work collaboratively to solidify our practices to ensure long term sustainability. The work ahead of us is in many ways more difficult than the work that we’ve already done. Our students and their families deserve to have the very best school possible. Far more than half of our students should be performing at or above proficiency. Our customers are counting on us to serve them and to deliver the best education possible.

Together we have learned so much. We have so much momentum. The power and effectiveness of a narrow, values-based vision is clear to us all. Four years ago when we heard about distributive leadership it sounded like some empty, pie in the sky, leadership jargon. Now, we see that the success of our school hangs on this powerful model. Each one of us are leaders. Each one of us impacts the quality of the learning experience for our customers. Everything we do has to be child-centered. We must collectively be action-oriented. We have to hold each other accountable on a daily basis. We must all be about delivering the highest quality tier-one instruction. Everything else is secondary in purpose. As you prepare for another year of difficult and taxing work, I want you to keep our instructional purpose front and center. Don’t get distracted by the many other things vying for your attention. Work with your team mates to make instruction job-one. Push your colleagues to do the same.

I am privileged to work with all of you and excited about the possibilities for our children. You have my endless support and gratitude for making Hanson Elementary the most satisfying place to spend every work day. Welcome to our new staff members. This is a great school and you will make us even more successful.

Professional ExpectationsDRESS AND APPEARANCEAppropriateness of dress and neatness of appearance is required of all staff, students, and substitutes. Professional attire is expected for all staff. The PE teacher will dress in accordance to his/her job. Sloppy t-shirts, sweats, sheer clothing, midriff tops, spaghetti straps, mini-skirts, spandex and flip-flops are not professional attire. TEACHER AND PARA-PROFESSIONAL WORKDAYK-5 Teachers and Para-professionals are to be at school, checked in, and ready for work no later than 8:30 AM. The workday lasts until 4:00 pm. Instruction begins at 8:55 and ends at 3:45 each school day. Please respect and maintain the integrity of the workday. The principal must clear any exceptions. If a staff member leaves the building at any time other than lunch, they must sign out in the office.

STUDENT SUPERVISIONStudents should never be left alone unsupervised. Teachers should never leave their classroom while children are present unless arrangements are made for another staff member to supervise the class in their absence. Leaving students alone, unsupervised, leaves the school district, administrators, and teachers open to legal action in the event that a student is injured while unsupervised.

DUTY SUPERVISION Always be punctual in arriving at your assigned duty area. Good intentions are no substitute for good supervision. If you are covering for another staff member, please be on time. Please inform substitutes or those staff members covering for you during your absence of your assigned duty. Please circulate during supervision without standing next to another person on duty to guarantee the safety of our children. All schedules are posted on the S drive.

PROMPT PICK UP & DROP OFF OF STUDENTS All teachers must be on time when picking up/dropping off the students for Music, Art, P.E and lunch. Schedules and daily routines can be severely disrupted when classes are late arriving at their designated area.

STAFF LOUNGEDaily cleanup is the responsibility of each person. The custodians will take care of the floor and sink daily, and empty the trash. They will not wash the tables or dishes. Staff members will sign up for a monthly duty to clean the lounge. Please be tidy and considerate.

REPORT CARDSAll teachers are required to electronically enter grades at the end of each term.

STUDENT ATTENDANCEEach classroom teacher is responsible for keeping accurate attendance records for every child who is enrolled in their class. Attendance should be entered every day in Infinite Campus by 9:20 AM. Attendance is printed on the report cards for each term.

BUILDING CARE AND APPEARANCEEveryone is responsible for the appearance of our school. Please set an example and help

children develop a sense of pride in their school. Please leave your classroom in neat and orderly condition for the next day. At the end of each day, please have the students pick up trash and straighten the classroom. Windows must be closed and latched each day, blinds should be closed, and your doors locked. Student desks should be cleared and chairs should be put on top of desks to facilitate cleaning. For safety, close and lock your doors when you are out of your room.

Please emphasize to your students the responsibility and care of books, furniture and any other school property. Please turn off your lights when they are not needed, or when you are out of the room. Building engineers will mount any nails, screws, or other materials used to hang items on the walls. Thumbtacks and staples should be used on bulletin boards only

MONEYMoney collected for various purposes should not be left in the classroom. The classroom teacher needs to bring it to the office in a sealed envelope with the teacher’s name, room number, and the amount of money that is in the envelope. This envelope will be placed in the safe.

TEACHER ABSENCESIf it is necessary for a teacher to be absent for any reason (illness, personal leave, professional leave, etc.) you must log in to Aesop to report your absence. Please do this as soon as possible to increase the chance that a substitute will be available.

Temporary LeaveDistrict forms for temporary, bereavement or civic duty leave are available in the office.Professional LeaveDistrict forms are available in the office.

STAFF EVALUATIONS Evaluation of certified and classified staff members will take place in accordance with the district negotiated agreement for each classification of employee. See Appendix G on the S drive (Staff Handbook>Appendices) for an overview of the process and a sample Summative Evaluation document. There is also a sample professional growth plan in Appendix H.

Planning & Instruction

LESSON PLAN POLICY Lesson planning is a vital component of the teaching/learning process. It is the professional responsibility of each teacher to prepare comprehensive lesson plans that reflect district curriculum and are aligned with state standards.

Lesson planning is intended to focus your instruction and to ensure that the district standards and curriculum are adhered to. Please plan carefully, listing the assessment, objectives, materials, and independent activities that the children are expected to perform. Have your materials and supplies readily available. Plans must be thorough to the extent that a substitute or the principal can come into the room and feel adequately prepared to carry out instruction for the day.

Teachers will prepare lesson plans on a weekly basis. Teams will work collaboratively to develop common objectives and formative assessments. The agenda for the day’s learning needs to be posted in the classroom each day—this is an expectation in every learning environment.

POSTING STUDENT WORK Current standards-based work should be posted in and outside of the classroom. Displayed work serves as an exemplar for students. Additionally, rubrics and data displays should be posted in both settings.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERSPlease introduce yourself to substitutes in our building, especially those working at your grade level or on-duty. If you have a problem or a concern with a substitute teacher, please let the principal know immediately.

Sub Plans with Notice of Absence:A substitute teacher folder with important class procedures and information is to be placed in a prominent area on your teacher desk. The folder should include, but not be limited to the following: lessons plans for all content that the teacher is responsible for, teacher schedules, seating chart, attendance lists, attendance reporting procedures, lunchroom procedures, daily routine instructions, duty schedule, instructions for picking up and dismissing students, any specific instructions related to instruction or grouping of students, and general building information. The materials listed in the sub plans should be available to the substitute teacher.

Emergency Sub Plans:Each teacher receives an emergency sub folder. This folder should be prepared in the unlikely event you cannot get specific plans emailed to your teammate. It needs to include all of the materials listed above and can supply a day’s worth of learning activities. Please prepare an emergency substitute folder and turn it into the office by the August 30th.

In order to provide substitute teacher coverage when there is a shortage of substitute teachers we will utilize the following procedure:

9

Page 10: Alsup Elementary School - files.adams14.org Files/Hanson Staff Handbook...  · Web view1. Hanson Elementary School. Staff Handbook. 201. 3-201. 4. Hanson. ... burns, fracture of

1. We will attempt to find a substitute through the substitute system.2. Next, we will use support staff in the building, i.e., Certified Support Staff, Learning

Coordinator, Principal, Learning Specialists, etc. 3. We may also split up students from a class to ensure their learning is maximized.

ProceduresVISITORS TO OUR SCHOOLParents and visitors are welcome in the building at any time but MUST report to the office, sign in, and get a visitors pass before proceeding to a classroom. In order to obtain a pass to a classroom, visitors must show some form of identification to the office. This is to ensure the safety of our children as well as to preserve the integrity of classroom instruction. Visits to the classroom should be limited to no more than one hour unless previously arranged with the teacher. Upon leaving the building, visitors must check out in the office. Siblings, friends and relatives are NOT permitted to visit the classroom unless prior approval has been obtained from the principal and the teacher.

Parents wishing to meet with a teacher are asked to make arrangements with the teacher ahead of time and appointments are usually scheduled outside of the instructional day. Please help us by insisting that all who do business with the school respect the learning atmosphere.

Teachers should never admit visitors to the classroom unless they have the proper identification or they are wearing a visitor’s pass. Visitors should never be allowed to take a child out of the classroom unless they possess a pass that allows them to leave with the child.

In the event that any teacher has any question about the authenticity of a visitor or someone wishing to pick up a child to take with them please contact the office immediately. Our office has numerous restraining orders issued by state and/or federal courts that require compliance by school officials. Please see Yessica if you are unsure if the person has permission to pick up the child.

FIELD TRIPSEach grade level (KG-5) can take one shared field trip each school year. All field trips must have prior approval of the principal and none will be approved during the last week of school. Requests for field trips must be submitted to the principal a minimum of three weeks in advance of the field trip. The field trip request form is in the Office General folder on the S drive. After approval, Yessica will notify the health clerk, cafeteria, and Kristen. Yessica also secures transportation. Teachers will receive a copy of the approval form after all components of the trip have been finalized.

Any parent selected to chaperone a trip most first be approved as a volunteer by the district. This process takes a minimum of 4 weeks to complete. Teacher should plan accordingly. Parents without district approval will not be allowed to chaperone. See Liza for volunteer forms and assistance.

LAMINATING PROCEDURELamination of submitted materials will be done by the LMC para. Please put your name on each

item before you turn it in. Minimum turnaround time is twenty-four hours. Plan accordingly. There are no rush jobs.

COPY MACHINESTeachers have a personal copy code and an allotted monthly copy budget of 3,500 copies. Large orders should be sent to the Print Shop as this is more economical and reduces wear and tear on the machines.

Please request PO’s from Yessica at least one day in advance via email. If reimbursement is needed, the amount has to be over $20.00. An itemized receipt is required for all purchases, no exemptions. We do not reimburse for tax. Absolutely no personal items on school related purchases (these receipts will not be paid). Receipts older than ninety days will not be paid. Communication

STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATION:Hanson staff is focused on providing excellent customer service to all stakeholders. We take the time to make all visitors feel welcome. Every parent interaction should be conducted with the highest level of respect and professionalism. Building strong partnerships with parents is a top priority. Hanson Elementary has an open door policy that encourages parents to visit and participate in school activities. The foundation of a respect-filled relationship is strong communication. Communication home should be frequent, varied, and balanced. Please go out of your way to communicate positive information to our parents.

GRADE-LEVEL NEWSLETTERS:Monthly, one-page, academically focused newsletters are a baseline communication requirement for all teachers PK-5. Each grade level will submit completed newsletters to Nelson by the third Monday of the month (September’s is due August 20th). Nelson will review and send to Anya for translation. Adhering to this schedule is vital for timely distribution and consistent communication.

REGULAR PHONE CALLS TO PARENTS:Regular phone calls home are an essential part of a consistent communication system. Teachers have time allocated weekly during their directed plan times for parent communication.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATION:A healthy school culture is built on efficient communication systems. The main components of Hanson’s system are:Daily Memo (sent daily by 8:45 lists absent staff, enrolling or withdrawing students and important reminders)Weekly Bulletin (emailed each Friday includes weekly events, meetings, and announcements)Meeting Agenda Announcements (for certified staff—hard copy delivered to mailboxes day before Faculty and CPD meetings)Hanson Outlook Calendar (All school meetings and events are scheduled on this calendar.) Each certified staff member is expected to have the school calendar open next to their personal calendar in Outlook at all times. Anyone needing technical assistance should see Kristen. Email should be checked twice daily, once in the morning and once at the end of the day.Staff mailboxes are located in the office. Please check your mailbox at least twice a day. Phone messages will be placed in your mailbox unless it is an emergency.

Each classroom has its own phone number. This number should be given to parents and others who may need to contact you. Please create a personal voice mail greeting by no later than August 10th. Instruction should never be interrupted by phone calls. If the phone rings during instruction, the teacher should let the call go to voice mail. The office will make every effort to avoid interrupting instruction by calling classrooms. If preferred, phones can be set to forward all calls to voicemail. Using this setting, phones will not ring. Please refer to Appendix F on the S drive for phone and voice mail instructions.

Please refrain from using your personal cell phone during the work day. If you need to accept a phone call on your personal cell, or if you have to have your phone on for an emergency, please let Nelson know.

COMPUTER SECURITYDistrict 14 is committed to the increased efficient and effective use of information processing systems for educational and administrative services. As an increasing portion of the district data are stored in automation systems, the safety and integrity of this data becomes a paramount concern. Data processing equipment is provided by the District and an understanding that each user will adhere to necessary precautions to protect district information. The administration is directed to develop guidelines for responsible use of district automated data systems. All employees of the district who are responsible for data storage and security shall follow the developed guidelines. The administration will maintain close supervision of all user interaction with the mainframe computer system to insure guidelines are followed.

Use of school computers for personal gain, or activity deemed illegal or illicit in nature is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action or dismissal.

STAFF USE OF THE INTERNETThe Internet is a vast collection of educational resources for staff and students and provides access to local, national, and international sources of information and collaboration vital to intellectual inquiry. The Internet is considered an extension of school libraries and other media/resource centers with a goal of promoting resource sharing, research innovation, communication, and opportunity for collaborative work.

The Board of Education supports the use of the Internet by staff to improve teaching and learning through interpersonal communication, access to information, research, training, and collaboration and dissemination of successful educational practices, methods and materials.

It is impossible to control all materials on a global network, and an industrious user may discover controversial information. The Board firmly believes that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the District.

The Board directs the superintendent to develop procedures for staff use of the Internet. Such procedures should address issues of privacy, ethical use of information, illegal and/or unauthorized uses of the networks and other conditions of usage. Use of this educational resource demands personal responsibility and an understanding of the acceptable use procedures for the Internet. Staff use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right. General rules for behavior

15

and communications apply when using the Internet. Failure to follow acceptable use procedures will result in the loss of the privilege to use this tool and may result in disciplinary action. (Please see and sign the Acceptable Use Agreement in the Appendix E)

Student Behavior ManagementHanson’s focus is on learning. When instruction is engaging, behavior issues are kept to a minimum. We are a PBIS school. Students need positive reinforcements and clear expectations. We have three core values that Hanson students strive for; Respect, Responsibility & Doing Your Best. Staff members give students Core Value Coupons whenever they see individual students demonstrating any of our core values. We hold monthly assemblies to award prizes to students with a Core Value Coupon raffle.

While positive reinforcements are a must, there are times when student behavior requires redirection and consequences. Below we have listed general levels of negative behaviors and the responses that coincide with each level.

I. MinorBehaviors that cause disruption to the educational setting (e.g., talking out, off task behaviors, name calling, disrespectful language) Staff members talk with students one-on-one to redirect their behavior. A RAP sheet is completed for documentation. This does not involve administrative support.

II. ModerateMinor reckless behaviors (i.e. pushing and shoving, throwing items recklessly) or minor behaviors that have become habitual Office referral is completed and student is sent to the main office.

III. Severe Behaviors that cause injury, are drug or alcohol related, involve weapons, severe sexual harassment, abuse, and/or racial or ethnic slurs Office referral is completed and student is sent to the main office. In or out of school suspension will follow.

See Appendix C for more specific details about dealing with behavior issues in the Discipline Matrix. RAP sheets are located Appendix E and the Referral can be found in Appendix F.

KEEPING STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL:No student will be detained after school longer than five minutes unless his/her parents have been notified.

SEXUAL HARASSMENTSexual harassment has been determined by the courts to be a form of discrimination and is therefore against the law. Repeated remarks to a person with sexual or demeaning implications. Unwelcome touching, such as patting, pinching, or constant brushing against another

person's body. Suggesting or demanding sexual involvement connected to implied or explicit threats about

grades, employment, or other similar personal issues.

Any employee may obtain a copy of the District policies and procedures related to these issues by calling the Division of Educational Services at 303-289-3942. They may also contact the Compliance Officer by calling the Division of Human Resources at 303-289-3950.

Under this law, school officials and school employees are required to report any of the above conditions to Adams County Human Services immediately. Nelson will make contact with the proper authorities.

DRUG FREE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES STANDARDS OF CONDUCT for STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEESThe Board of Education recognizes the personal and social harm caused by drug and alcohol abuse and the dangerous consequences to the individual so involved. Consequences for violating these sanctions include immediate suspension, which may result in termination of employment. In addition, any employee shall be suspended immediately after arrest for possession or for being under the influence of a controlled substance pending an investigation of fitness to work in a school environment.

TOBACCO-FREE SCHOOLSIn accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes, all Adams County School District 14 school buildings and grounds are designated as tobacco free zones. Use of any tobacco products in any building or facility or on the grounds thereof is strictly prohibited.

STUDENT MEDICATIONNormally, no medications including aspirin, over-the-counter medication (including cough drops), or prescription drugs can be administered by school personnel. In those instances when it is necessary for a student to receive medication in school the following procedure MUST be followed:

1. Parents must fill out the School District 14 form AUTHORIZATION FOR GIVING MEDICATION AT SCHOOL.

2. The form must be submitted to the school health clerk. Only the school health clerk can administer medication.

STUDENTS WHO BECOME ILL DURING THE DAYIn case of illness or accident, the child should be sent/brought to the health clinic with a clinic pass. Only the office may authorize sending a student home, and then, only after the parents have been notified. (Please do not have a child call home from your classroom to have parents pick them up if ill.) If you believe that a child needs to go home, please inform the office.

FIRST AIDSchools are responsible for giving first aid or emergency treatment in case of sudden illness or injury to a student or a member of the staff.  Further medical attention to students is the responsibility of the parents or guardian, or of someone the parents or guardian designate in case of an emergency. Each principal shall be charged with providing for the immediate care of ill or

injured persons within their control.  A school nurse or other qualified staff member shall administer emergency aid.

In each school, procedures for the handling of such emergencies shall be established and made known to the staff.  Each school and school vehicle shall be equipped with appropriate first aid equipment.  All employees are expected to be knowledgeable about first aid and to know where first aid supplies are kept in their work areas.

The following information has been provided as guidelines for emergencies and clinic procedures: SEIZURE PROTOCOL

If a child has a seizure, lower him/her to the floor, clear the area of furniture to avoid possible injury, and turn on side if possible to keep airway open. Do not put anything in his/her mouth.  Time, and document the seizure (movement and body parts affected).  Notify health clerk.  If seizure is more than 5 minutes, call 911.

BREATHING DIFFICULTYIf child is having difficulty breathing, have an adult escort him/her to the clinic. If it is a breathing emergency (he/she can't talk or is turning blue) call 911 and notify the health office.

SUSPECTED HEAD OR SPINAL CORD INJURY OR UNCONSCIOUS CHILD Do not move the child.  Stay with the child and send another person to the clinic for help.

CLINIC PROCEDURESWe appreciate your help by sending students to the health office with a pass. This ensures us that you know where the student is and provides the required paper trail for treatment in the health office. Do not allow students to call parents from the classroom. They must be seen in the health office before they can be sent home due to illness. Please note that children are only sent home for a temperature over 100, vomiting (if witnessed by an adult) or severe injury. Children who have been seen in the health office and were sent back to the classroom did not meet the criteria. If they still complain of not feeling well, suggest they put their head down on their desk for a few minutes to minimize disruptions and missed classroom instruction. Classes were provided with Band-Aids and gloves. Minor cuts can be handled in the classroom. Children who are bleeding or have bloody noses should be sent to the health office instead of the bathroom. Observe Universal Precautions.  If it's wet and not yours, don’t touch it; use gloves.

Children with live lice or nits closer than ¼ inch to the scalp will be sent home for treatment. They cannot ride the school bus home or back to school until they have been treated at home and checked in the health office upon arrival. After treatment they must be checked by the health clerk daily for 10 days and treated again at home to ensure that the problem is resolved. PREVENTION OF DISEASE/INFECTION TRANSMISSION

GeneralThe Board recognizes that communicable diseases that may afflict students or employees range from common childhood diseases, acute and short-term in nature, to chronic, life-threatening diseases such as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).  The district shall rely on the most advanced knowledge and advice of the medical community in assessing the risk of transmission of various communicable diseases to determine how to best protect the health and welfare of both students and employees.

Page 21: Alsup Elementary School - files.adams14.org Files/Hanson Staff Handbook...  · Web view1. Hanson Elementary School. Staff Handbook. 201. 3-201. 4. Hanson. ... burns, fracture of

The management of common communicable diseases shall be in accordance with the guidelines developed by the Colorado Department of Health.  The Board, through the Superintendent, or her designee, may temporarily exclude students and employees who show symptoms of communicable diseases until appropriate action has been taken to insure the health and safety of the individual and those who may be at risk of being infected.  The Superintendent shall develop guidelines to insure an orderly process to determine appropriate action for individual students or employees.

In all instances, district personnel shall respect the rights of the individual to privacy and treat any medical diagnosis as confidential information.  Special precaution shall be taken to protect information regarding a students’ or employee's health condition in order to prevent instances of disclosure that may invade the personal privacy of the student or employee.

Specific to AIDSThe Board recognizes that the AIDS epidemic in the United States poses a unique situation and moral dilemma for the school system.  Since the discovery of the disease, AIDS cases have increased in number and the World Health Organization projects that AIDS will continue to be an epidemic, worldwide, for years to come.

The AIDS virus is transmitted almost exclusively by the behavior of individuals, i.e., sexual activity and sharing needles.  Appropriate educational intervention can oftentimes modify personal decision-making.  Therefore, it is the moral obligation of the district to provide education and intervention strategies that may help individuals in their decision making relative to this life-threatening disease.

The Superintendent shall develop guidelines for education and intervention to deal with communicable diseases, particularly AIDS, and the handling of bodily fluids.
