Fall is a very busy time of year on the golf course. The cool nights and low humidi-
ty bring some of the best conditions of the season. The grounds crew has been
busy the last few months preparing things for next season. Fescue areas have been
cut down and sprayed, most of the playing surfaces are being aerated, bunkers
will be edged back, sod repairs will be made to traffic areas and the irrigation system will be reviewed and
repaired for next year.
The grass range tee is now closed for the season. last week’s frosts have begun to push our bermuda grass
into dormancy, and it is critical that we minimize the traffic it receives from now until next spring. This fall
the grounds crew has been increasing the playability of the short game area, by working the chipping green
back down to greens height.
The rest of this month the grounds crew will be focusing on finishing our aeration processes. We will be
bringing in a company to assist us with fairway aeration next Thursday, november 7th. We will unfortunate-
ly need to keep the course closed that morning, as we work to process and clean up the aeration plugs on our
25 acres of fairways. The process and goals will remain the same, however; with their additional equipment,
we will be able to finish all the remaining fairways in just over a day. We will still be pulling up soil and cre-
ating a natural composting system that will improve the chemical, physical, and biological conditions of our
fairways. i will be updating the blog over the course of that day, as we work. Thank you in advance for your
understanding for this inconvenience as we work to improve the golf course for years to come.

Green AerATionFinally, we have scheduled our final
greens aeration for november 18th
through 20th (monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday). This process will be
similar to what we did in August. We
will be removing a core and filling
the holes with topdressing sand. our
current plan to to do several back
nine greens monday morning before
the golfers get to the holes, then on
Tuesday get as many greens done as
possible before nightfall, and use
Wednesday for wrapping things up.

colby’s rule of the monthrule 16.1d Abnormal course conditions; relief for ball on putting Green
Colby and Rita just celebrated Halloween by wearing matching
Mickey Mouse outfits. Somehow Colby went from being a zom-
bie with a bloody-gory mask to the least scary character in his-
tory. Truth is, Rita’s outfit was worn by Colby when he was her
age, and being a great big brother he wanted to make it a spe-
cial Halloween by dressing like her. Either that or his motive
was that every door they hit they got double the candy this year
(and since Rita isn’t eating candy yet, Colby hit the mother
lode!)
Rita didn’t give up her candy all that easy though. She made
Colby promise to take her golfing every day for two weeks lead-
ing up to our annual family trip to Pinehurst over Thanksgiving.
Rita wanted her game to be in top shape when she got there.
Colby still thought that it was a good deal (most houses gave
Rita extra candy since she was so darn cute!)
The first couple days were spectacular fall days; crisp air,
vibrant colors on the trees and fast greens! They were enjoying
bonding as siblings and getting their games in shape. Then
those bonds were put to the test. Monday morning they woke
up to 40 degrees and a light rain. The forecast was to get a
steadier rain and have the wind pick up, certainly not the best
golfing conditions. Colby informed Rita that they wouldn’t be
playing that day. Rita protested, reminding Colby that he made
a promise (and he’d already eaten all of Rita’s candy, so there
was no going back now.)
Colby could think of 100 things he’d rather be doing than play-
ing golf on a cold, rainy day. But he made a promise, and he
knew he needed to keep it. Rita kept warm by wearing her
fleece pajamas under her rain pants and jacket. Maybe not the
best look, but she was prepared for the elements. Colby lay-
ered up as well, and off they went. They elected to walk to
keep warmer (and Colby had a few Twix bars he had to burn off
as well.)
The high winds and increasing rain made scoring difficult. Rita
didn’t seem to mind as she was focused on working on her
game. They both trudged around the course battling the ele-
ments. Very few words were spoken between the two (Rita
doesn’t know that many and Colby wasn’t in the speaking
mood.) When they got to the 10th green Rita’s ball was on the
front left lower portion of the green, while Colby’s was on the
back tier where the pin was located.
Up to this point the greens had drained remarkably well and
putting hadn’t been an issue. However, on this green Rita’s ball
was sitting in the middle of a small pond. Rita had dealt with
abnormal course conditions (temporary water) in the fairway
before, but this was the first time she had to deal with it on a
putting green. She asked Colby the ruling. Since he wasn’t in
the best mood he didn’t want to give it to her. No worries, she
went to her bag and whipped out her rules book.
Under Rule 16.1d Abnormal Course Conditions; Relief for Ball
on Putting Green - If a player’s ball is on the putting green and
there is interference by an abnormal course condition, the player
may take free relief by placing the ball at the nearest point of
complete relief, no closer to the hole. The nearest point of com-
plete relief must be either on the putting green or in the general
area. Rita’s nearest point of complete relief was on the lower
right side of the green where there was no water and she was
not closer to the hole.
Rita swung as hard as she could trying to whack the ball up
onto the top tier. With the greens now holding maximum water,
it was like putting on Velcro. The ball didn’t quite make it to the
top, then it slowly made its way back down towards Rita, and
then like the water itself the ball headed to the lowest point
back into the small pond. Colby couldn’t contain himself and
let out a huge laugh. His little sister smiled and laughed as well.
He told her not to worry; it was good practice watching balls
come back off the green for when they would play Pinehurst #2.
Happy Thanksgiving!

2019 Superintendent’sRevenge zThe team of Kurt Meyers, Vince Small, Mike Angelos and
Larry Kessler carded a round of 67 to finish first in the Gross
Division. Henry Rodrique, Mike Kelly and Mark Panek post-
ed a score of 68 to finish second. The Net Division winners
were the team of Jack Bukowski, Cat Colby, George Cox and
Barb Cox who posted a round of 59.4. Mike and Diane
Bartunek and Mike and Trish McGarry teamed up to shoot
59.9 which was good for second place. I’m sure Tim and his
staff were close by watching and laughing!!
BACKYARD BRAWLS HALTED BY MOTHER NATURE 36 Men headed to Spring-Ford and 16 Ladies stayed at RiverCrest for the
matches. A light rain greeted both courses as play began at 12:00pm. At
1:00pm the greens at Spring-Ford became flooded and play was halted.
The rain continued and as a result the Men’s Backyard Brawl was not con-
tested for 2019. The Men’s Brawl will resume in 2020 back at RiverCrest.
The Ladies Brawl continued on but wasn’t until 3:00pm that the greens
started to puddle, at which point play was halted. The Ladies Captains
made a decision prior to beginning play that whoever was winning the
matches would be victorious. As a result RiverCrest Ladies won back the
trophy. Congratulations Ladies!
