terDirector : Sanna LenkenCountry : Sweden, GermanyLanguage : English, SwedishRecommended Age Range: 13+ (From Grade 08 to 13)Synopsys of the film: Stella is in love with, of all

people, someone almost four times her age and has no idea

how to tell him. But her older sister Katja’s problem weighs far heavier on her mind. Katja is a talented figure skater and is always busy with school or training. Stella admires her sis-ter and tries hard to emulate her and the two girls get on well. But Katja hardly has any time and can sometimes have mood swings. Stella realises that something is wrong with her sister and discovers that she is suffering from a severe eating disorder that could kill her. Katja forces Stella to swear not to tell their parents, but that is far too big a burden of responsibility for a girl of her age.

Synopsys of the film: Set in the eighties, young Catherine (12) grows

up in a strict protestant farming family in Zeeland, the south of Holland. As the only girl among six brothers, she is hardly involved in daily work and feels left out of the day-to-day conversations at the dining table. She lets her fantasy run wild by Bible stories, gossip and even fairy tales, though these are not allowed as they keep her away from the Truth. However, for her reading and learning are the only ways to transcend her daily life. Finally, during her brother’s wedding, she literally overwhelms her fam-ily with literature, leaving her childhood behind, ready to become who she wants to be.

The Boy in the Mirror

Of sizzling popular-ity in the field of electronic media in the island, the most popular is television and this popularity

owes itself mostly to the facet of tele drama. First garnished with much commercial value, today it has trans-formed itself into an ingredient in the everyday life of people.

Priyantha Fernando is the direc-tor of Sanda Vinividi , presented by the National Rupavahini corpora-tion .This is also his first tele series added to which is the specialty it has garnered due to the very endearing visual aspect.

Though the TV medium is mostly an audio visual medium today, the focus is on the visual aspect. This present attention, less on the visual aspect and more on the audio aspect has led to a galore of cheap enter-tainments via the audio medium. But in ‘Sanda vinivida’, we see a reverse tendency where focus is on the visual leaving the audience , much scope to ponder on the issues presented.

This drama dwells on the inter - personal relationships within two families seen through a sympathet-ic eye. The actress Malkanthi Jayas-inghe, acting the role of mother of two daughters and a son, is utilized by the director very deftly to portray the turmoils a mother undergoes. The other actress, Chamila Peiris is entangled in a highly dramatic role as a woman married to an already mar-ried man but not revealing this state to other family members. Prasanjith Abeysuriya deftly plays the role of a

broker, a role endemic to the present commercialized society.

In the second family, Hyacinthe Wijeratne, plays the role of a mother limited to a wheel chair. She has two sons, of whom one is dead and his wife turns into a mental patient and is warded. Their daughter is looked after by the wheel—chaired grand-mother. The other son is romanc-ing an unsuitable partner and the mother is entangled in all those travails too. The chief role is played by Teckla Kumudu Kumari , who portrays the different roles of school teacher, daughter, lover, second mother , evoking much sympathy and admiration of the audience.

Ishara Sandamini who plunges into mental disarray after a road accident draws much admiration from the audience by a genuine piece of acting.

Other characters are played very emotively by Priya Ranasinghe, Piyumi Boteju , Kavinga Perera, Kumari Munasinghe, Dasun Pathi-rana , Dilani Nikahetiya , Gnananga Goonewardena and Lakshika Fon-seka.

Script, videography, art direction, music, editing , make up and all other ingredients of this drama are of a very high calibre. There was a time when we viewed excellent tele dramas and we are thankful that this teledrama ensures a comeback to those earlier dramas. We should also be thankful to Kithsiri Alexan-der Cooray who produced this crea-tion as a recompense for the feeble debut of Anatha Doopatha , and this production hence can be reckoned as a turning point in his career. Sanda vinivida furthur is endowed with an intriguing tale that evokes the

curiosity of the audience by its nar-ration of a highly realistic family drama found in modern society.

The rhythm encased in this drama by the director is germaine to him alone and reflects the life patterns of the true natives of the soil in a very convincing way. The focus on feminism too is evident in this drama and the triumphal scene of this aspect is the final scene where a cute little lass serves as the kingpin of the sacrificial rites of many an elderly female embroiled in the dramatic events.

The fans of Sri Lankan born Derrick Junkeer kept their date with him last Thursday to enjoy his

romantic renditions of songs that were the golden hits of singers like Englebert Humper-

dinck and Tom Jones. It all happened at the popular High Tea performance at the Galadari Hotel.

Derrick Junkeer or Derrick J as as he is fondly

known wowed his fans no end

as he stepped down from the stage and moved among the guests who

were thrilled to sway and clap to the

rhythms of his songs. He encouraged them to sing along

with him and to quote a cliché “they were in seventh heaven”!

Although he is now domiciled in Melbourne, Derrick J has not lost his touch in entertain-ing music lovers both young and old – something that he has been doing for more than 25 years. His appearances on the TV specials ‘Good Morning Australia’ esca-lated his popularity and he is now a household name in Melbourne. His rich and powerful vocals laced with warmth, passion and sincerity were the key to his overwhelm-ing success. Kudos to the Galadari Hotel for featuring him at their High Tea afternoons and giving his fans especially to those who were unable to catch his appearance at his formal concert in Colombo, an opportunity to see him in perfor-mance.

But Derrick J was not alone at this appearance. Supporting him in this ‘thrilling musical journey’ was the vivacious and beautiful Danielle Faour, 23 years old and

herself a recognised singer in Melbourne. Modern in style she was on a different track to Derrick J yet she captured the attention of the guests as she sang her songs which has brought her recognition in Melbourne. Now a competent singer/composer Danielle’s song ‘Hey Daniel’ won her fame with the prize being the filming of her song on You-Tube. The future looks bright for Danielle, who when she is not involved in composing her songs, enjoys performing at musical theatres.

It was an afternoon that saw the guests lavishing the

High Tea spread while enjoying the musical vibes of Derrick J and Danielle. That they would make a return we hope is on the cards.
