2014 Annual Giving and
Building Fund Appeal
Salem’s capital campaign is an oppor-
tunity for all members and friends of
Salem to grow in faith and generosi-
ty. The goals for our Salem Rising Ap-
peal include two purposes and two
commitments. We are asking every-
one to prayerfully consider:
•a one-year commitment to the 2014
Annual Giving Fund, and
•a three-year commitment to our
Building Fund. Building Fund com-
mitments need to be over and
above annual giving.
Most of all, keep Salem in your pray-
ers as we focus on Salem Rising!
Sunday, October 13
This is our appeal Kick-Off Sunday.
Sunday, November 10
Invitaon-to-Prayer Sunday. Every-
one will receive their Salem Rising
Prayer and Commitment Packet in
worship.
Sunday, November 24
Commitment Sunday and Special Fel-
lowship Event.
We are invited to bring our commit-
ments to worship where they will be
dedicated to the glory of God.
Sunday, December 15
Celebraon Sunday! We will an-
nounce appeal results to date.
A special thank you to the congrega-
on for prayers and commitments.
Along with our capital campaign, we
are very pleased to offer this fall Fi-
nancial Peace University for the third
me. Financial Peace University is a
wonderful complement to our Salem
Rising Appeal as it teaches faithful
stewardship of the resources God has
entrusted to us. Please see page 8 for
informaon.

2 Corinthians
13:5
Rev. John Louk Pastor of the Salem UMC
on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids and
beyond. In short, we need a clear, compel-
ling, shared vision to focus our life togeth-
er. We are clear about our mission to
make disciples of Jesus Christ for the
transformaon of the world. The vision is
what that looks like when God’s kingdom
comes and God’s will is done right here
and now on earth, that is, in the mission
field surrounding us.
Certainly part of our vision is to em-
body and share our name Salem, meaning
peace, wholeness, completeness, health,
well-being, joy, beauty, jusce, and salva-
on. That is what God wants for us and for
the world. Having a clear, compelling,
shared vision of what that looks like, how-
ever, will narrow it down to something
specific. Perhaps we will feel led to a
school where we will work to make sure
all the students have the resources they
need for class and at home, to make sure
all students are able to read, and to make
sure all students have enough food. Or
maybe we will feel led to the neighbor-
hood right behind our locaon, working to
make sure all the people there have
wholeness of life, for instance, help with
marriage, money, and kids, relaonships
throughout the neighborhood, and a rela-
onship with the Lord and a place in the
body of Christ.
Once we have this clear, compelling,
and shared vision, then we need strategic,
intenonal systems to help us accomplish
our mission and vision. Specifically, we
need systems to make disciples and lead-
ers, to engage the people of Salem to
serve in ministry, to oversee the people of
the congregaon, to connect new guests
in the life of the congregaon, and to
reach out to the people around us in the
community.
This is an excing me and, as always,
an adventure. I invite you to parcipate in
the town hall meengs and to pray for the
Holy Spirit to guide us.
Grace and peace to you,
John Louk
My Inial Response to the Consultaon Report
Our Healthy Church Iniave consulta-
on occurred September 20-22. AAer sev-
eral months of preparaon and the three-
day consultaon, we received the report
consisng of five strengths, five concerns,
and five prescripons with deadlines for
implementaon (available at the church or
on our website).
Two town hall style meengs are
scheduled to discuss the report and the
prescripons: Monday, September 30 at
7:00 pm and Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00
pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged
to aEend. These mes of holy conferencing
will be followed by a church conference on
Monday, October 14 at 7:00 pm with the
district superintendent to vote officially as
a congregaon. The only agenda item will
be the vote on whether we will implement
the five prescripons as a whole.
My inial response is that I am very
pleased with our consultaon experience
and the direcon we have received as a
congregaon. In terms of strengths, our
consultaon team experienced Salem as a
warm, welcoming, spiritual congregaon
with giAed and effecve leadership and a
long history of forming Chrisan disciples.
They saw in us resilience and tenacity in
the face of significant challenges, especially
the flood of 2008. And they recognized
that we have landed in a fantasc locaon
within a large mission field.
The reality is, Salem didn’t just survive
the flood. While the flood experience in-
cluded about two-and-a-half years of great
difficulty, we are far beyond merely surviv-
ing. We are an effecve and fruiIul congre-
gaon filled with wonderful people who
follow Jesus. Therefore, the prescripons
we received are not a reacon to some-
thing that needs fixing. Rather, they are
proacve. That is, they are meant to help
us intenonally cause something to hap-
pen rather than just respond to something
that has gone wrong.
Further, based on our journey over the
last five years, we are ready to take the
next steps and become a more powerful,
fruiIul influence for the kingdom of God
In October, our focus in worship is stewardship. Our theme is Salem Rising. In this
Season AAer Pentecost (ordinary me), we connue to read scripture texts from the
Revised Common Leconary. Some of our scripture readings, however, are being
moved to different Sundays while other texts are being added to complement our
stewardship focus.
“Steward” translated from the Greek New Testament word oikonomous, literally
means “manager of the household.” We are all stewards of God’s household, the
divine reign over all creaon which Jesus described as “the kingdom of God.”
As stewards we manage God’s household, not ours. God, the Creator and owner of
all that is, says, “Here, I’m giving you all that I have. Take care of it. Manage it. Be
fruiIul. Make good things happen.” That’s stewardship. Because everything belongs
to God, it is vital that we listen to what God tells us to do, so we are managing God’s
household as God desires.
While the liturgical color for this season is green, symbolizing growth in Christ, the
color red is also used for celebraon. Come and worship!

Can I write just one Sunday offering
check for more than one fund or do
they have to be individual checks?
If you wish to write a check for more
than one fund, for instance $50 for
the budget, $10 for missions, and $15
for the Building Fund, you are wel-
come to write one check for the total
amount with your desired break-
down indicated. It will be posted as
noted to the funds and will show up
that way on your giving reports.
We are very grateful to everyone
who makes an offering for any of the
missions that are liAed up at Salem.
Your giAs bless many. Checks for vari-
ous mission projects should be made
out to Salem. Because Salem’s bank
account is in the name of Salem UMC
we ask that checks be wriEen to Sa-
lem, with the name of the mission or
enty on the memo line of your
check. Offerings are posted in our
bookkeeping system indicang the
amounts for each designated giA. A
check for the total of everyone’s
offering to the mission (checks and
cash) will then be issued and sent
from Salem to the mission.
Where do I get offering envelopes?
Single offering envelopes are in the
pockets on the backs of the sanctuary
chairs. If you prefer to have a supply
of envelopes at home so you can pre-
pare your offering before coming to
church there are packets of 12 for
persons who like to give monthly,
and packets of 52 for those who like
to give weekly. These packets are in
a basket on top of the “Usher’s Cup-
board” in the back of the sanctuary.
Please help yourself or ask one of the
ushers for a packet of envelopes.
Please note that if you do not indi-
cate otherwise, your offering will go
into the general budget. You are al-
ways welcome to write on the out-
side of your envelope, or include in-
formaon within the envelope, if you
would like your giA to go enrely into
a different fund at Salem or be divid-
ed between the budget and another
fund. If your offering is done with a
check, rather than cash, use of an
envelope is oponal.
Do I have to call Salem to receive
pastoral care visits in the hospital?
If you, or a family member, or Salem
friend are hospitalized, please be
sure to let us know. Even if you list
Salem as “your church” when you are
admiEed, the informaon does not
always get to the right people so that
it is communicated to us when we
call the local hospitals to check if any
of our members are hospitalized. It’s
beEer that we learn about hospitali-
zaons two or three mes than not
at all.
Why should I fill out the Communi-
caon Slip every Sunday?
Each Sunday, in your worship bullen
is a narrow slip of paper labeled
“Communicaon Slip.” There are
places on this paper for you to com-
municate several different things to
the pastor, the church office, and
others quickly and easily. If you fill in
nothing else on your Communicaon
Slip, please do put your name on it
and drop it in the offering basket. We
track the number of people in aEend-
ance at worship each week for our
stascal reports, but most im-
portantly YOU, the person—not the
number, maEer to us. Whether you
aEend every week, or occasionally,
we like to know that you are here.
Please do take a moment each Sun-
day to communicate with us.
Frequently Asked Quesons and Answers
How are the yellow prayer re-
quest cards used?
If you’d like to request prayers for
yourself or someone else you can
briefly write the request on the yel-
low card in the sanctuary chair
pockets and drop it in the offering
basket. Please be sure to include
your name and phone number. Also
be sure to check the boxes indi-
cang who you wish to have the
prayer request shared with. Ac-
cording to your instrucons the
prayer request can be shared with
only the pastor, the prayer team
that prays over the requests two
Tuesday mornings each month,
and/or the prayer chain. Our email
prayer chain goes to over 80 peo-
ple.

Report of the Leadership Board
Meeng Notes 09-17-2013
Following the subcommiEee meengs at 5:15 the full
board met at 5:45. Kathy Wickham led with devoons
and prayer.
Stewardship – Members of the Stewardship subcom-
miEee had quesons which will be forwarded to our
treasurer regarding a bank charge that is shown in the
Profit & Loss Budget vs. Actual report, as well as out of
which fund are payments to The James Company com-
ing. It was also suggested that another Sunday emphasis
be done for Imagine No Malaria giving.
Trustees – •Items from the Ecumenical Center that we
plan to keep have been moved to the storage space pro-
vided by Dave Kuda. Mark Minger will contact Habitat for
Humanity to see if they would like to check through
items that we are not going to save and that have to be
removed from the ECC by September 30. Jan Johnson
will send a thank you to the ECC for their generous shar-
ing of space with us for the last 5+ years. Kathy Wickham
will send thank you notes to the people who helped
move items to Dave Kuda’s. •The City of Cedar Rapids is
now requiring landlords to take a class (between 10-1-
2013 and 7-1-2014) in order to renew the required Land-
lord Business Permits. Judy Arruda will talk to the renters
of the Salem parsonage about their plans to hopefully
buy the house. If they are able to proceed with the pur-
chase Salem would not need to connue to have the
Landlord Business Permit. •A proposal to purchase a
small copier to have in the classroom building for Sunday
School teachers and Youth leaders to use was discussed.
An excellent copier is available from Business Soluons
Group for $645.50 which is less than 50% of retail. LB
members present approved the purchase.
SPRC – The subcommiEee has begun working on Salem
staff salary recommendaons for 2014 and will make
recommendaons to the full Leadership Board at the
October meeng for discussion and decisions.
Informaon to Share/Decisions to Make
