PRAYER OF DAY

1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek

will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—

indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and

who can stand when he appears?

For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as a refiner and purifier of sil-

ver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they

present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. 4Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will

be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

Let us pray.

Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son. By his coming give to all

the people of the world knowledge of your salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH

BLESSING (spoken together)

We praise you, O God, for this circle of light that marks our days of preparation for Christ's

advent. As we light the candles on this wreath, kindle within us the fire of your Spirit, that we

may be light shining in the darkness. Enlighten us with your grace, that we may welcome oth-

ers as you have welcomed us. Grant this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain

and whose day draws near. Amen.

Sunday, December 6, 2015 Second Sunday of Advent

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

the Lord of Israel who comes to set us free,

the mighty Savior who comes to show mercy,

the Dawn from on high who guides us into peace.

Amen.

Let us come before God in confession.

Silence is kept for reflection.

To you, O God,

we lift up our souls.

You know us through and through;

we confess our sins to you.

Remember not our sins;

remember us with your steadfast love.

Show us your ways;

teach us your paths;

and lead us in justice and truth,

for the sake of your goodness

in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Sisters and brothers, come with joy

and draw water from the well of salvation.

Remember the gift of baptism:

your sin is washed away in the name of ☩ Jesus;

you belong to Christ;

you are anointed to serve.

Stand up and raise your heads!

The reign of God is near.

Amen.

THE PSALM: Luke 1:68-79 Chanted Responsively

68Blessed are you, Lord, the | God of Israel,

you have come to your people and | set them free.

69You have raised up for us a | mighty Savior,

born of the house of your | servant David.

70Through your holy prophets, you promised of old to save us | from our enemies,

71from the hands of | all who hate us,

72to show mercy | to our forebears,

and to remember your | holy covenant.

73This was the oath you swore to our | father Abraham:

74to set us free from the hands of our | enemies,

75holy and righteous before you, all the days | of our life.

76And you, child, shall be called the prophet of | the Most High,

THE SECOND READING: Philippians 1:3-11

3I thank my God every time I remember you, 4constantly praying with joy in every one of my

prayers for all of you, 5because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. 6I

am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to comple-

tion by the day of Jesus Christ. 7It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because

you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with me, both in my imprison-

ment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8For God is my witness, how I long

for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. 9And this is my prayer, that your love may

overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight 10to help you to determine what is

best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11having produced the har-

vest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

The gospel is announced. The holy gospel according to Saint Luke the third chapter.

Congregation: Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL: Luke 3:1-6

1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of

Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and

Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,

the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went into all the region

around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4as it is

written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the

wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5Every valley shall be filled,

and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and

the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

The gospel concludes: The gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Emmanuel has come, is here, and is coming soon. Let us join in prayer for the church, the

earth, and those who are in need, that all receive what God promises to give.

A brief silence.

O God, our hope of unity, come to your church around the world. Purify your people and give

to all the wisdom and courage to proclaim your word of forgiveness and renewal. Lord, in

your mercy, hear our prayer.

O God our Savior, come to the earth that you made. Nurture the health of lands and seas. Give

to plants and animals favorable weather. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O God of peace, come to all the nations. Inspire heads of state and regional leaders with a pas-

sion for justice. Bring peace throughout the world, and healing peace to the citizens in San

Bernardino, California. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O God of love, come to everyone in need. Heal the sick. Answer the cries of those who are

poor, those without housing, and those who have fled from violence or famine. We pray espe-

cially for Sebastian Sousa, of this congregation, as he prepares for surgery tomorrow. May

this restore good health to him . And also for (those on our prayer list). Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer

O God of compassion, come to our congregation and our community. This Advent, help us to

prepare for your coming. Make us gifts to one another, that no one remains destitute or des-

pairing. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord of hosts, we praise you for the lives of all the faithful . Bring us with them to your

feast of eternal compassion. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Receive our prayers, merciful God, and make us ready to receive you when you come through

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ.

You comforted your people with the promise of the Redeemer, through whom you will also

make all things new in the day when he comes to judge the world in righteousness. And so,

with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your

name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:

Blessed are you for the birth of creation.

Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.

Blessed are you for your promise to your people.

Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams.

Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will.

Blessed are you for your Son Jesus,

the Word made flesh.

11

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming.

Come, Lord Jesus.

Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth.

Come, Holy Spirit.

All praise and glory are yours,

Holy One of Israel,

Word of God incarnate,

Power of the Most High,

one God, now and forever.

GREAT AMEN

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power,

and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

NEW VESTMENTS: This morning you will notice Pastor Jeff wearing a new vestment

called a chasuble. At the request of Pastor Jeff and the Worship and Music Committee the

Congregational Council approved the purchase of a complete set of these vestments to be

purchased using memorial gifts. We have a chasuble for each liturgical color of the church

year—simple in design this set is made of lined silk damask with cotton velvet adornment.

Following is a brief history and explanation of a chasuble:

The chasuble /ˈtʃæzjʊbəl/ is the outermost liturgical vestment worn by clergy for the celebra-

tion of the Eucharist in Western-tradition Christian Churches that use full vestments, primari-

ly in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches. In the Eastern Churches of

Byzantine Rite, the equivalent vestment is the phelonion.

"The vestment proper to the priest celebrant at Mass and other sacred actions directly con-

nected with Mass is, unless otherwise indicated, the chasuble, worn over the alb and

stole" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 337). Like the stole, it is normally of the

liturgical colour of the Mass being celebrated. The chasuble originated as a sort of conical

poncho, called in Latin a "casula" or "little house," that was the common outer traveling

garment in the late Roman Empire. It was simply a roughly oval piece of cloth, with a round

hole in the middle through which to pass the head, that fell below the knees on all sides. It

had to be gathered up on the arms to allow the arms to be used freely.

In its liturgical use in the West, this garment was folded up from the sides to leave the hands

free. Strings were sometimes used to assist in this task, and the deacon could help the priest

in folding up the sides of the vestment. Beginning in the 13th century, there was a tendency

to shorten the sides a little. In the course of the 15th and the following century, the chasuble

took something like its modern form, in which the sides of the vestment no longer reach to

the ankle but only, at most, to the wrist, making folding unnecessary.

At the end of sixteenth century the chasuble, though still quite ample and covering part of the

arms, had become less similar to its traditional shape than to that which prevailed in the

nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the chasuble was reduced to a broad scapular,

leaving the whole of the arms quite free, and was shortened also in front and back. Addition-

ally, to make it easier for the priest to join his hands when wearing a chasuble of stiff (lined

and heavily embroidered) material, in these later centuries the front was often cut away fur-

ther, giving it the distinctive shape often called "fiddleback". Complex decoration schemes

were often used on chasubles of scapular form, especially the back, incorporating the image

of the Christian cross or of a saint; and rich materials such as silk, cloth of gold or brocade

were employed, especially in chasubles reserved for major celebrations.
