Meet Henri Matisse

1869-1954

“Creativity takes courage.”

20th Century Master

• Henri Matisse was born in France in 1869 (about the time the telephone was invented.)

• He is one of the most famous artists in the world-called a “Master Artist.”

• He had an amazing career sculpting, painting, etching, creating wall murals, stage designs, stained glass windows, collages, book illustrations and more.

“Art Fever”• As a young adult Matisse studied

law. When he was 21, he had an operation to remove his appendix that left him bedridden for nearly a year.

• His mom brought him an art box to help pass the time while he was recovering. From this point on, he had “art fever.”

• He would take drawing lessons before his law clerk job, paint on his lunch breaks and study art after work. Art was his passion.

• Finally, against his fathers wishes-he decided to study art full time in Paris.

King of the Beasts!• For six years he went to all kinds of

art Museums and took art classes. At times he only ate rice because he was so poor.

• After a lot of work, he held a “one man show” of his paintings. (This took a lot of courage.)

• The French people that saw his work called him a “Fauvists” (wild beast) in French.

• They thought his paintings were “wild” because he used bright colors and they called him “beast” because of he used unusual shapes. (hit enter)

• Do you think this painting is WILD and beasty? Why or why not?

Color Crazy• Matisse painted in a way that was

very different from the type of art that was popular at the time.

• His painted as he saw things in his head or imagination. He did not want his art to be realistic like many other painters.

• He loved his paintings to be “joyous with color.”

• Can you see any patterns in these paintings?

• What other things does he like to repeat?

Cutting with Color• In his later years, Matisse got very

sick from cancer. After two surgeries, he had to use a wheel chair and could no longer stand at an easel to paint.

• However, he would not let his wheel chair confine his creativity. People were surprised by how he adapted.

• For example, he would draw on his walls with charcoal attached to a long bamboo stick.

• He even developed a new way to make art called “Paper Decoupe.” In French this means paper cut outs. He also called this “cutting with color.”

“Beasts of the Sea”• Matisse liked to think up ways to

show things in motion with his paper cuts-- like waves or swaying seaweed.

• He kept shapes simple but always had a lot of fun with color!

• He may not have realized that he created a habitat in “Beasts of the Sea.”

• Can anyone tell me what a habitat is? (hit enter)

• Yes! A habitat supplies a species (such as a shark) with food, water, air for it to live.

Beasts of the Sea• What kind of habitat would this be?

• Mountain• Marsh• Coast • Piedmont• Ocean

• Do you see any “beasts” in his sea?

• What do you think these might be? (hit enter 2 x’s) Maybe he populated his painting too!

• Lets take a look at some beasts of the “Georgia Sea” and Gray’s Reef populations…

“Beasts From Gray’s Reef”

•Now it’s time for you to make your own Matisse-like paper cut.

•However, your version will be based on the coastal creatures that populate Gray’s Reef!

•What are you waiting for?

•It’s time to put some motion in your ocean!

Page 13: Summit Hill Elementary Art EDventures “Beasts of the Sea” 3rd Grade/Science-Habitats of GA Henry Matisse Brought to you by S.H.E. PTA PLEASE NOTE: This

Project Art EDventures• You will be given blue

foundation paper for your habitat-it will represent Gray’s Reef/The Atlantic Ocean.

• Choose several Georgia coastal creatures to populate your reef. Add some aquatic plants too!

• Now change your “beasts” and “plants” into simple shapes! Matisse did not include details like eyes, noses and smiles.

• Choose some “joyously colored” paper and start “color cutting!”

• Glue your shapes down on your habitat.

• Don’t forget to add shapes that give your “fish a swish” or add some “excitement to your sea!”

• When finished- sign your art on the back and “Draw the Paw” so others know it is a PTA Art EDventures creation.

Supply List

• Turquoise Construction Paper- for “foundation.” (One per child)

• Paint Chips-or brightly colored scrapbooking papers for sea creatures and shapes. (One gallon zip lock bag of chips per table.)

• Glue-several bottles per table.

• Scissors (one per child)

• Black Roll Paper- (optional) for display.

Tip: Some kids may ask for a pencil to draw their creatures first. Have them try to just cut the shapes out of paper first. If they are having a hard time, you can give them pencils. There are not supposed to be details drawn in the project –everything should be cut.

• Ask your teacher if you can do an ocean bulletin board to show these off!

• S3L1 Students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat.

a. Differentiate between habitats of Georgia (mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont, Atlantic Ocean) and the organisms that live there.b. Identify features of green plants that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia.c. Identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of Georgia.d. Explain what will happen to an organism if the habitat is changed.

• Dear Mom, Dad or Caretaker,

• I went on an Art EDventure today and learned about Henri Matisse. He is one of the best known artists in the world.

• When he got cancer, he wasn’t able to paint any more, so he created paper cut art instead called “paper decoupe” (pronounced day-coo-pay.)

• We also looked at his piece called “Beasts of the Sea” and talked about habitats and populations. For inspiration, we reviewed photos taken of Gray’s Reef (a Federally Protected Marine Sanctuary off the Georgia Coast near Savannah.)

• Don’t forget to ask me about my “Beasts of Gray’s Reef” creation.
