Larry’s Line

by Lorenzo J. “Larry” Chinook

Hi folks!

Well, it’s been a tough season. Instead of spring flowers, we’ve had the coronavirus. This fish hopes you and your family haven’t been hit too hard by it, and that you’re ready to come back to school.

During the pandemic, we have moved all our classes to remote learning so our students and faculty can interact safely.

Many of Our Community Ed classes are still scheduled for june and later, but if you prefer online options, there are a lot of those as well. Check out listings on pages 5-13.

And finally, if you are struggling with something, we may be able to help, or to point you to resources. Check the back cover for numbers and email addresses. A list of community resources is also available at www.cgcc.edu/community-resources

There is no community college without our community!

We are here for you. - Larry, cgcc mascot

(and all-around awesome fish)

The breadth of the community that CGCC serves is quite impressive, covering a wide area in both Oregon and Washington in the Columbia Gorge. Rural community colleges in the US are invaluable for myriad reasons. Current CGCC student Sean’s story highlights the value of institutions like CGCC, and how they provide educational access to students that reside in small, rural communities that lack any type of post-secondary career pathway. Sean grew up in Grass Valley, raised

by grandparents who piqued his intellectual curiosity at an early age by taking him on road trips to historical sites like Western American Powerland and Rendezvous. Though he was a gifted and talented student, Sean struggled to find his place at a young age within a traditional educational setting.

Sean enrolled at Grass Valley High School, but he didn’t fit in and dropped out in 2014. Before enrolling in the Pre-college program at CGCC, he stayed busy working several jobs: flagger at Oregon Raceway, selling antiques, and landscaping. His grandmother told him about CGCC’s Pre-college classes in The Dalles and encouraged him to enroll. After orientation, staff approached him about being a part of their recently created Youth Success

Program. The program provided him with structure, exposed him to CGCC degrees and certificates and removed financial burdens associated with the GED test and transitioning to college. Sean felt like the program lit a fire in him, and he says he is forever thankful for the resources that he utilized while he was a part of the Pre-college and Youth Success Program. Today Sean is well established within our community at CGCC. He has been active in Student Government for the past 2 years. Furthermore, he assisted in making floats for the Starlight parade and worked on a successful Drive-Less challenge all while working on both his transfer degree (2 credits short) and EM Tech certificate. Sean will leave us soon for OIT to get a degree in Sustainable Systems Engineering. We are so very thankful to have crossed paths with Sean. Students like him enrich our college and illustrate the powerful opportunities that colleges like CGCC provide for those that most need them.

CGCC wants to thank our students, staff, faculty, and community for supporting each other through this unprecedented time.

To our students: we want you to succeed! CGCC has done everything we can to ensure that your studies can continue with as little disruption as possible. We have moved classes to online/remote learning for summer term. Even if our buildings are not open to the public, we are here to serve you. See the list below if you need to contact us, or start on our website at cgcc.edu.

Additionally, the Chinook Campus Pantry is open to all. Assistance for community members who are struggling is available through many avenues. If you are unsure where to go, ask us. We may be able to direct you to available resources.

Stay strong, Chinooks!
