June 18 WORSHIP AT 9:15 AM

FATHER’S DAY

Crossflame Worship Concert Don’t forget to wear your Name Tags!

Yellow Hat goes to support Crossflame Youth Choir & Orchestra.

DEAR FRIENDS, I return to you excited for a number of reasons! Your gifts and prayers and support made such a difference in the lives of folks at Las Parcelas! People like Pastor Marcial, our cook Rosie, young adults like Davin and his wife Ruth and their two children Raquelita and newborn Pamela, college student Joseling and teens like Carla, children named Moses and Jefferson, Anna [who is deaf] and Samuel and Chilu and so many more! But they made a difference in mine and Rose’s and Brenda’s [our other team members] lives! We

are so inspired by their joy in the Lord, by their gracious and generous hospitality in sharing what little they had with us. We laughed and cried and sang and prayed and worked and sweated together! And the church was finished and dedicated! And so many children! I would love to have as many kids EAGER and EXCITED to be a part of worship! I have much to share with you and hope you will also be eager to see the photos and hear the stories of God’s work among our sisters and brothers. We also visited the site of the next church build at La Majada, also outside of León, which will take place this fall. My prayer is that God will move upon your heart to answer the call to

an experience which you will never forget and which will change your heart and life—and your relationship with Christ. I will be rolling out the plan in the next two weeks, so stay tuned! This Sunday we will experience worship as never before. This is NOT entertainment, but a full worship service which will inspire and bless you. What a wonderful opportunity to invite a guest to worship with us—there will be no long-winded sermons—but rather tremendous music from faith-filled youth! Don’t miss it!

With a grateful heart, Pastor Karin

MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES

Don’t forget! Crossflame, an award winning 60+ member youth choir and orchestra from North Carolina is leading our worship service this Sunday. Crossflame was recently recognized by Youth Choirs Inc. with a Spirit of Cue Award, an honor given to a youth choir who exemplifies the best traits of a youth choir ministry. Their worship concert will feature contemporary Christian, “crossover” classical and traditional sacred music. Their visit to Odessa is part of Crossflame’s 2017 annual tour. Over the past 22 years, their annual tours have taken them to Canada, Scotland, and throughout

the eastern United States. On two occasions, they have appeared as part of a Sunday afternoon concert with an all-star cast at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville. Mark your calendars, more great music is still to come with two special concerts later this summer!

On Sunday July 23, the Men of Simpson Choir from Simpson United Methodist Church in Wilmington will present a concert at 3 PM in the sanctuary. Pastor Karin heard this group share their gifts at the Peninsula-Delaware Annual conference last month and they are awesome. On Sunday, June 25, following worship, we will begin the voting process for our Favorite Hymn Fundraiser for our handbell choir to go to Festival next spring. The nominees have all been tallied and we are voting on our favorite from among the ten finalists. How do we vote? Each vote cast costs $1. There will be a box for each hymn and you can stuff the box of your choice. As they say, "vote early and often!" You can vote as many times as you wish for your favorite We will do this each Sunday for the next few weeks. Then the final celebration of the winner will take place this fall. More details on that will follow later. So be ready next week as the finalists are presented to you by our bell choir who will be playing that morning as well. On Sunday August 13, Bells of the Bay, a community handbell choir from Maryland’s Eastern Shore will present PotpourRing at 4 PM in the sanctuary. This is a return engagement for Bells of the Bay who presented a concert at St. Paul’s last August. I am very privileged to serve as Artistic Director of this dedicated and talented group.

Blessings, Shelley

TRIMMER NEEDED!

Looking for someone to trim the hedge on the hill on the side of the church. It's up against the wrought iron fencing, along the handicap walkway. There is a "yard waste" only trash can for the clippings. There is an outside outlet near the handicap door, if you want to use an electric trimmer. Thank you, Sharyn Sheats

TRANSLATOR NEEDED We may have need of someone who can speak and translate Spanish Sunday, June 18-Tuesday, June 20. There is an outside chance that the President of the Evangelical Methodist Church, Rev. Ruben Zeledon, may be visiting us those days. Please contact Pastor Karin at 302-668-6685 or [email protected] if you can or know someone who could translate.

ATTENTION ARTISTS--WORSHIP COVER ART

We are created in the image of God [Imago Dei] which means that our Creator God gifts us with creativity! If you are interested in designing cover art for the worship folder please contact the office. The process is fairly simple—you will be given the scripture that is the theme of a service and upon which Pastor Karin will preach. You interpret the scripture in any media and submit to the office either in original form or in a jpeg or png file. If you have questions or need a bit of direction we are happy to help with that as well. All are welcome! THEME starting June 25 is FISH TALES.

HEALTH MINISTRY TEAM

Heat Related Syndromes Summer time is now upon us and with this comes fun in the sun.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. There are three heat-related syndromes that can occur: heat cramps being the mildest and heatstroke being the most severe.

Heat Cramps: These may be the first sign of trouble. If you do not stop and treat these you can progress to the next level. Heat cramps are usually caused by an electrolyte (sodium, potassium) imbalance caused by sweating. Signs of heat cramps are: painful, involuntary muscle spasms that usually occur during heavy exercise in hot environments. Treatment includes: Rest briefly and cool down, drink clear juice or an electrolyte-containing sports drink, practice gentle range-of-motion stretching and gentle massage of the affected muscle group, don’t resume strenuous activity for several hours or longer after heat cramps go away and call your doctor if your cramps don't go away within one hour or so.

Heat Exhaustion: Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion may develop suddenly or over time, especially with prolonged periods of exercise/play. Signs can include the following: cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, weak, rapid pulse, nausea and headache. Treatment includes: Stop all activity and rest, drink cool water or sports drinks, move to a cooler location, lie down and loosen your clothing, apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible, and if you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention immediately.

Heat Stroke: Heatstroke is a condition caused by your body overheating (body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or higher). This is the most serious form of heat injury and requires immediate, emergency medical attention. Untreated heatstroke can quickly damage your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. The damage worsens the longer treatment is delayed,

Page 6: SUMMER WORSHIP CONTINUES at 9:15 AM - …...and newborn Pamela, college student Joseling and teens like Carla, children named Moses and Jefferson, Anna [who is deaf] and Samuel and

6

increasing your risk of serious complications or death. Signs can include: high body temperature, confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, seizures, and alteration in sweating. In heatstroke brought on by hot weather, your skin will feel hot and dry to the touch. However, in heatstroke brought on by strenuous exercise, your skin may feel moist. You may also have nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, racing heart rate and headache. Treatment is to call 911 immediately! Move the person to a cooler environment, reduce the person’s body temperature with cool clothes or a bath and Do Not give fluids.

Prevention: This is the key to avoiding these heat-related concerns. Things you can do are very simple: Wear loose fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing, avoid sunburn, seek a cooler location, and drink plenty of fluids (staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain normal body temperature), avoid alcoholic beverages, let your body acclimate to the heat slowly. There are certain medications that can affect how your body responds to high temperatures (always check with your doctor concerning your medications). So have fun this summer, but stay safe.
