MissionTo make a Saint Viator High School education attainable to more families while providing positive work experiences for students by placing them in entry-level jobs at local corporations, where they will earn up to $3,000 towards tuition.

Brief HistoryThe Summer Work Study & Internship Program was initiated as the Corporate Work Study Program in 2013 under the leadership of alumni, Andy Kelleher ’86 and Dean Niro ’83.

In 2014 the program began with two partners and has grown to 17, serving 43 students. This has funded over $120,000 in tuition assistance. Financial CostsPartners and Sponsors are responsible for $3,150.00 per student. Each student receives up to $3,000 of the tax-deductible funds at the completion of the program, (240 hrs*), which is applied to their tuition at Saint Viator High School. The remaining $150.00 goes towards overhead administration costs of the program which help run the program throughout the entire calendar year. *Hours may be flexible depending on employer agreement. Time FrameGenerally internships begin after the Fourth of July and finish sometime during the third week of August, a total of six weeks. The schedule is not limited to the aforementioned time frame and can be determined once a student is placed.

Businesses, organizations and individuals fulfill a social responsibility by giving back to the commu-nities in which Saint Viator students and their families work and live.

Two unique opportunities for individuals and/or businesses/organizations to become involved. Our community Partners are often local (Lake, DuPage, Cook County) businesses/corporations that host/employ Saint Viator student interns during the summer months; giving them the oppor-tunity to learn and work over a 6 week time period.

Our community Sponsors, who are typically but not limited to individuals or families that pledge funds to cover the cost of a summer intern. Once an individual or family has pledged to sponsor a student intern the SWSIP will match those funds to a local non-profit that might not otherwise be able to host a student intern due to financial costs. Some Sponsors prefer guidance in deciding the type of non-profit a student interns for and welcome suggestions.

Community and Individual Involvement

EMPLOYER INTERNSHIP BENEFITS

» Qualified student support to assist with temporary, seasonal or ongoing projects» Motivated students providing short term assistance to support current staff» Increased productivity within a department at a nominal cost» Enhanced and/or new perspectives on current projects » Increased visibility within the community » Opportunity to fulfill a civic and professional responsibility by providing young professionals with real work experience

Benefits

We anticipated that our summer employee would be a skilled individual, but we were particularly surprised at how quickly and accurately he accomplished tasks. It was a great learning experience for us to realize that participants really come prepared to work and attack projects with intelligence and enthusiasm. It fell to us to be creative and thoughtful in utilizing the talent he brought so that we could maximize the benefit from having him with us.” – David Hogaboom/Managing Partner/Client Engagement Director

“The Saint Viator community has always been there for me and my entire family, and I am happy that through the Summer Work Study & Internship Program, my wife (Marie ‘81) and I have been able to give back to that community by making it easier for another student to have that same experience.”

“At Gallagher, our goal is to provide Viator students a working environment that gives them an early insight into the expectations of global Fortune 500 organiza-tion. It isn’t surfing the web, or grabbing coffee, we assign our Viator interns diffi-cult projects with strict deadlines, and require them to work with multiple teams throughout the summer. Our goal is to provide them with a pared down version of our college summer internship program. This year, we asked our Viator intern to help judge the sales presentations of college interns, presenting a complex sale. During his last week, we surprised him by asking that he sit on the other side of the table and sell the product to a group of veteran brokers with little time to proactively prepare --- He absolutely nailed it.” -- Marcus Henthorn/Area Vice President

“I am a producer in Arthur J. Gallagher’s Public Entity division, and had the fortunate pleasure of working with Jake this summer. I have not only seen Jake come to work professionally dressed each and every day, but saw him do this with an energetic smile and will to learn. Each week of the summer internship, Gallagher requires our interns to present on a value added service that each specific division specializes in. Jake sat in on each of these presentations throughout the summer. Jake was able to follow along and learn at the same pace as sophomores, juniors and seniors in college. During the final week of Jake’s internship, we tasked him to present on a very com-plex, alternative risk structure insurance program called an in cooperative – IPSIP. This insurance product is far more complex than a personal auto policy that most kids are learning about when they turn 16. He did a fantastic job articulating the concept to a intimidating room of 7 full-time AJG producers. Jake did not only articulate the concepts clear and concise, but he did a fantastic job thinking outside of the box with unique metaphors to help illustrate complex insurance methods/topics to buyers. Our team internally, will definitely be using these in our actual presentations. Overall, Jake was a pleasure to work with this summer. It was clear that he took this summer seriously and absolutely grew as a professional. I expect huge things from Jake in his professional career, and am confident that any company would be lucky to have him. I see a bright future for Jake because of his great attitude, hungry for knowledge, and time management.”- Jack Kurcab/Acct. Executive A. J. Gallagher
