Summer of the Mariposas

Dear Parents & Educators,

As the Art Director in Amplify ELA, it has been my pleasure to work with a team of illustrators to develop a series of illustrations for each unit in our program. Our teachers continue to provide feedback on the value of the artwork in helping their students engage with important themes, concepts, and narrative moments within daily instruction. I’ve designed a project for you to use as a supplemental activity with your learners so they too can be creative and stay engaged while learning remotely.

Sincerely,

Art Project Summary

Supplemental Art Project Guide

The learning objective for this creative exercise is for students to be able to find details from the text to reference while visualizing how the character traits and relationship of the five sisters changes over time. You should encourage your students to:

As their art director, you can encourage your students to pay attention to:

To help with the logistics of remote learning, you can instruct your students to draw each composition on a separate sheet of paper and photograph the result using a mobile device or their computer camera. Their artwork and explanations can be inserted into a Google Doc or an email and shared with you.

In the Supplemental Art Project, students are asked to illustrate two compositions of the relationship between the five sisters at the start and at the end of their heroic journey. They are then asked to describe each illustration and how it is supported by quotes in the text. You may instruct your students to collect quotes for this exercise as they read the novel, or you may share the full activity at once, after your students have completed reading the book.

Helpful Tips for You

• Look for specific details about the characters and collect quotes as they read

• Use their quotes to support the design of each character and overall composition

• The physical appearance of each sister

• The way each character’s emotions are reflected in body gesture or facial expressions

• Composing each scene: what are characters doing? How are they interacting?

• Using color to portray drama, symbolism, or emotion

• Using as many art supplies (pencils, markers, collage, paint!) as they want

“Meet the Illustrators”

Amplify ELA has documented the creative journey of up-and-coming and seasoned illustrators from all walks of life and their contribution to our middle school program in the “Meet the Illustrators” series. The free Summer of the Mariposas unit comes with a 4 minute documentary video that features the illustrator Caroline Hadilaksono discussing her creative process and personal journey. We encourage you to share this video with your students to inspire them in their own creative pursuits. As an alternative, there is also a PDF transcript of Caroline’s interview.

Some of Caroline’s illustrations for AmplifyELA are on the last page of this guide. We encourage you to share this artwork with your students as you see fit. This artwork can be used as creative inspiration or to help students engage with the Summer of the Mariposas novel.
