Summer Challenge Welcome to the HSBC Rugby Counts Summer Challenge! Challenge Week One This week, we are going to be looking at money! What it looks like, the different shapes and colours. We will also have some fun trying to find the balls hidden in a photo from a Rugby 7’s. Parents and Guardians: The games and challenges in this weeks session apply an active play-based approach designed to motivate children to learn without it feeling like a lesson. This session focuses on recognizing different types of money, their shapes, materials and value. The first two activities can be completed on paper (you’ll need a pen and a couple of sheets of paper to write out your answers and ideas). The third activity is a physical challenge and on the next page you will find the “Rugby Ball Search”. The session usually takes 30 minutes to complete but can take longer depending how creative you get and/or how long you spend discussing your child’s answers. The Good luck and have fun!

Summer Challenge

Welcome to the HSBC Rugby Counts Summer Challenge! Challenge Week One This week, we are going to be looking at money! What it looks like, the different shapes and colours. We will also have some fun trying to find the balls hidden in a photo from a Rugby 7’s.

Parents and Guardians:

The games and challenges in this weeks session apply an active play-based approach designed to motivate children to learn without it feeling like a lesson.

1ST ACTIVITY: THE COIN CHASE

Try to find as many of these coins as you can. One of each coin would be great. But don’t worry if you can only find some of them.

Great. It’s time for your first challenge.

Look at the coins. What do you notice about them? Are they all the same shape? How many different shapes can you see?

Are they all the same colour? How many different colours can you see?

How many different shapes and colours are there in total?

Now look at the coins again. Can you put the coins in order, starting with the coin which is worth the least, all the way through to the coin which you think is worth the most?

Once you’ve finished, ask your parent/guardian to check how many you got right.

How did you do?

Parents and Guardians: Depending on the age of your child and how familiar they are with some of these themes, you could choose to

focus on the shapes and colours alone. The idea here is for your child to identify that the coins are different and

how they are different (shapes and colours). If they can start to identify which coins are more valuable, then that’s a

bonus at this stage.

Can you name these shapes?

Are any of these shapes the same as the coins you just looked at?

Great work.

Ok, next can you find any things in your house which are the same shape as the objects below? (they do not have to be the same colour). Ready. Steady. Go!

1.

Cylinder Cube Cuboid

SphereTriangular prism

2. 3. 4.

How many did you find?

Parents and Guardians: Here we would like your child to notice the similarities between the 2D and 3D objects.

A sphere (ball) looks like a circle. A cylinder (kitchen roll tube) looks different from different angles.

Sometimes it can look like a circle. Sometimes it can look like a rectangle. And so on.

Did you know? A rugby ball is a prolate spheroid in shape - a spheroid that is pointy at each end.

1ST ACTIVITY: THE COIN CHASE

2nd Activity: The Same Shapes

Can you make a giant shape on the floor? Using toys and other objects from around your house (ask your parent/guardian for help) lay them out on the floor to make your favourite shape.

What did you make? Is it big enough for you to sit in it?

Amazing work!

Now for a bonus point, can you make a shape like a rugby ball?Send your pictures in to [email protected]

Any photographs or drawings you send in might be published on the HSBC website or other media. By sending in your drawing or photograph you are giving HSBC a licence to use your drawing or photograph for any purpose. The drawing has to be your own and can’t have been done by anyone else. The photograph should be of yourself and the rugby challenge task and should not feature anyone else.”

We have hidden 15 balls in the crowd. Every ball has a letter printed on it. Can you find all 15 letters and then work out what they spell?

Next steps of learning:We would suggest that adults play shop with their children so they can understand the value of money and how much change they get.
