“Only Girl Scouts, with its scale and time-honored place in society, can launch this [Year of the Girl] initiative. If not us, who? If not now, when? When girls succeed, so does society. We know that together, we can get her there.”- Girl Scouts of the USA Chief Executive Officer, Anna Maria Chávez

“Girl Scouts is at the forefront of building girl leaders. Our girls will understand that they matter. And when they dream their future, they see a world of shared leadership: where the values of courage, confidence, and character really do make the world a better place.”-Girl Scouts of the USA National President, Connie L. Lindsey

Dear Girl Scouts, Family, and Friends,We are now a part of a nationally historical moment in the life of Girl Scouts. It’s 2012 - marking our 100th Anniversary and our self-declared “Year of the Girl!” Girl Scout camping experiences are a foundational part of our mission which is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. It will be a year to remember for every camper as they recall the summer of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts!

If you mention camp to anyone, all sorts of traditional images come to mind like campfires, sticky and gooey s’mores, swimming, silly songs, horseback riding, nighttime adventures, and of course, making friends. Many of us stop there however, and make the assumption that camp is about the activities that girls do, or the facilities that are provided for them. Those are definitely important aspects of camp, but camp is so much more! Girls who attend any Girl Scout camp make some of the best friends of their lives and learn what real friendship is all about. It is an exercise in self-reliance and social learning. All the activities at camp directly translate into concepts like community, confidence, self-discovery, character, and courage. It is a unique combination of fun, friendship, the power of girls together, and being in nature providing girls with a tangible self-esteem boost. Camp is a place where girls can find the community that they have been searching for.

Girl Scout camp teaches girls independence, leadership development, self confidence, the importance of teamwork and cooperation, environmental stewardship, and new skills that make them stronger. Of course, we have to mention that girls have a GREAT time developing all of those skills! As a Girl Scout Council, we are committed to giving every girl the chance to obtain these skills by providing camp scholarships (camperships) to every girl who needs one.

Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa offers camp opportunities for girls going into grades 1-12 in the fall of 2012 at three resident camps: Joy Hollow (Westfield, IA), Camp Sacajawea (Boone, IA), and Camp Tanglefoot (Clear Lake, IA). Girls can sign up for any of our camp sessions as an individual or with a friend. Even girls who are not currently registered Girl Scouts can attend camp!

You can register for any of our camps using the form in the back of this book, or on our website, www.girlscoutsiowa.org. Please contact us with any questions that you may have. We are here to make sure that you have a great experience and we look forward to seeing you at camp this summer!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

The Camp Directors

Camp Pricing: It is Your Choice!

Girl Scouts believes that every girl, regardless of financial circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience camp. Tiered pricing gives each family the opportunity to choose which pricing option works best for them.

We are continuing a three-tier program for pricing options at camp. You may choose the tier that is most suitable for your family. no matter what tier is chosen, all information is confidential and the quality of the camper’s experience will be the same.

Tier 1 represents the most heavily subsidized fee. This is the standard price we have set to make camp available to all girls. Tiers 2 and 3 help to cover more of the direct costs of your camper’s stay at camp and are voluntary choices for families who have the financial means.

Tier 1 The most affordable fee. Scholarships are also available for families who are in need of financial assistance. Use this tier as your base number if you are applying for a Campership.

Tier 2Partially subsidized by Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa.

Tier 3 The least subsidized fee covering many of the direct costs for your individual camper to participate in the camp session of her choice.

Payment may be made by check, credit card, Girl Scout Cookie Dough, Campership (application on page 33-34), or a combination of those options.

A non-refundable deposit (minimum of $30) must accompany each summer camp registration, with full payment being due an average of four weeks before the camp session begins. The Campership Application can be found on page 33-34 or by going to our website, www.girlscoutsiowa.org.

Every girl has the opportunity to experience camp!

Health Services

2 8

Health SupervisorAll camps have a qualified health supervisor on site. A doctor is on call and medical facilities are readily available. Parents will be notified in the event of a serious illness or injury.

Health ScreeningGirls and adults will go through a brief health screening upon arrival at camp. Girls and adults found to have a high temperature or contagious illness/disease will be sent home. All participants are checked for head lice during check-in at camp and if found, the camper will be sent home for treatment and must be cleared by a doctor before being allowed back at camp.

The camp health supervisor and/or Camp Director reserve the right to refuse admittance to any girl/adult who does not meet acceptable health conditions.

MedicationThe health supervisor will administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications. MEDICATION MUST BE IN ITS ORIGINAL CONTAINER and will only be administered to the specific person to whom it was prescribed.

Supplemental InsuranceSupplemental insurance for health and accidents, while a girl is at camp, is provided through Mutual of Omaha.

Refunds Due to IllnessPartial refunds are made only if a girl becomes ill and cannot attend her camp session as scheduled.

A physician’s note is required and a request for the refund must be submitted in writing to Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa within one week after the camp session. No refunds are given if a girl returns home during camp because of illness, injury, homesickness, inappropriate behavior, and/or any other circumstance.

Do you know someone - or are you someone - who would like to make a difference in the life of a girl this summer? Summer camp staff must be 18 years old. We are currently hiring for all positions including:

• nurses* • counselors • lifeguards • kitchen staff

* One of the most important and critical jobs to fill at camp is the health supervisor which requires highly specialized training. It has become increasingly difficult to find nurses who can live and work the full summer at our camps. We are looking for several people who would “job share” these very important paid positions at camp. Camp-age daughters of the health supervisor can attend camp at a reduced fee. To be eligible you need to be a registered nurse, EMT, or paramedic who would consider living and working at camp for at least one full week. For more information, please contact your specific Camp Director. Contact information can be found on page 3.

Our camp scholarships are calledCAMPERSHIPS.

Camperships are available for those who are unable to pay for all or part of the camp fees. The funds for these scholarships come from foundations, organizations, and individuals. Will you consider contributing to a campership this summer – and help send a girl to camp?

Camperships provide a memorable and life-changing experience for girls who may not otherwise be able to attend camp.

Support at any level will help to give girls this valuable opportunity. Please consider the impact of the following levels of support:

$ 1,200: A week of Resident Camp for four girls

$ 600: A week of Day Camp for three girls

$ 300: A week of Resident Camp for one girl

$ 200: A week of Day Camp for one girl

A core value of the Girl Scout program is to include children from all economic circumstances. The camp community is enriched and strengthened by diversity. Girls need your support more than ever! In 2011, requests for campership support rose from $50,000 to $65,000.

CampershipsCamperships are available for one camp session to those demonstrating need. The Campership Application (located on page 33-34) must be completed and attached to the camp registration. If applying online, there is an option to fill out and send in your application. notification will be sent in the mail separate from the confirmation packet. Camperships are based on need and will be a percentage of the session cost. The $30 non-refundable deposit must be included with registration.

Counselors & StaffCamp Directors recruit and screen mature, qualified staff that have a desire to share their enthusiasm for camping, the outdoors, and arts with your camper. We also may hire international staff to give your camper the chance to broaden her understanding of other cultures. All camp staff participate in an intensive pre-camp training, which includes program, first aid, CPR, camping, and human relation skills among others. Specially qualified staff direct the water activities, archery, challenge course, rock climbing, and horseback riding areas.

Dietary or Medical RestrictionsPrior to girls coming to camp, please contact the Camp Directors for campers requiring special diets or accommodations. You can discuss the nature of your camper’s needs and gather additional information to determine if the camp can provide the proper support, supervision, and necessary accommodations for your camper to have a safe, fulfilling camp experience.

Buddies at Resident CampGirl Scout Camp is a wonderful way to meet new people. A camper may request OnE “buddy” on her camp registration form. Both campers must register for the same program and session, list each other on their forms, and must mail registrations and deposits in the same envelope. If you are registering online, please note that both campers must request each other or placement will not occur. We will do our best to accommodate multiple buddies and larger groups - however, we cannot make any guarantees.

Expected Camper BehaviorCampers exhibiting inappropriate behavior including but not limited to: biting, hitting, using excessive profanity, refusing to participate in a program, not following staff directions, bullying, creating a hostile and unsafe environment, and/or not following camp rules, will be sent home immediately with no refund.

DepositsIn anticipation of a camper’s attendance, various expenses are incurred such as supplies, equipment, registration, and camp staffing costs. Accordingly, there is a non-refundable $30 deposit for each session requested due with the Registration Form and Campership Form. Forms received without the deposit will be returned. If you are requesting a campership to help cover your cost, and are unable to pay the $30 deposit, please provide a written explanation. This deposit is applied to the session cost. If a session is cancelled by the participant, the deposit is retained. If the Council cancels a session, the deposit will be returned. Please note that the deposit is not transferable to another camper. Cookie Dough may nOT be used for the deposit.

Cookie DoughCookie Dough may be used for camp but may nOT be used for the $30 deposit or any adult fees. The cookie dough chart located on page 4 will assist you in determining how much cookie dough you can earn to use towards your camp session.

Weather-Related Changes Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa reserves the right to alter scheduled activities due to weather conditions. Alternative options will be offered to replace an activity cancelled due to weather. Our primary concern is your daughter’s safety, but every effort will be made to reschedule activities. nO refunds or adjustments in fees will be made.
