Dear Parents and Students:

It is the mission of Cuyahoga Community College to provide high quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services — including university transfer,

technical and lifelong learning programs —that promote individual development and improve the overall quality of life in a multicultural community. Providing young people the opportunity to experience college life with our varied summer camps is a vital part of our mission. The camps are not only fun and educational, they are often the first experience a child has on a college campus and serves as a start on their path to higher education.

Cuyahoga Community College offers dozens of summer camps to engage children and teenagers. Camp offerings include archaeology, culinary, dance, science, and other popular programs. Now is the time to think about what activities are best suited for your child during summer and where new interests can be explored. Camps offer a safe, healthy environment at a campus near your home.

At Tri-C, you can relax knowing that all camp participants are given the highest level of attention to ensure they are safe and having a good experience at Tri-C. We work hard to ensure you and your children, grandchildren, friends, and other campers enjoy their time spent with our instructors and staff. All Tri-C for Kids instructors and staff working with your children have state required background clearances and have been trained in proper techniques for protecting children.

We use state of the art technology and equipment. Camp participants learn how to safely and effectively use and care for the equipment while having fun.

Each Tri-C for Kids Summer Camp has at least one coordinator helping in class. The coordinators are with the children all day including any time they are in the classroom, walking to and from class, or are entering or leaving the premises. I and our lead coordinator, Fran Tomba, work with each camp offered as both coordinators and monitors of activities along with the classroom coordinators.

You will receive a Parent Letter a week or so before your camp which details everything you need to know from drop off on day 1 to pick up on the last day of each camp. Included will be a schedule, supplies (if any) you need to have at camp, guidelines for a safe camp, and forms we ask you to review and sign.

Tri-C is your Community College. Use it, enjoy it and have fun with us this summer!

AtTri-CforKidsweofferfulldayandhalfdayprograms.As in the past, lunch each day is at about Noon. for those campers who are scheduled into a morning camp and an afternoon camp the same day or into a full day camp each week. Special rooms are assigned for lunch. All morning camps end at Noon. All afternoon camps begin at about 1 p.m. All full day camps are as scheduled.

This year, your child will enjoy the lunch she or he brings in the GAME ROOM where we will be playing chess and checkers with a 25” Giant Chess Set or a Checkersgame with pieces that are 10” in diameter and sit 3 1/2” tall! Or, how about “being” the chess players with a life-sized game of chess where everyone is a character!Last year, these programs were a hit with campers whoparticipated in the before camp programs. This summer, they are part of our lunch program to get everyone intothe fun and excitement of playing the games with ourhuge chess and checkers pieces.

Campers will be joined by our staff as they enjoy theirlunchwiththeKingsandQueens!Wewillhaveoneofthese games per campus each week where scheduledcamps are running. Camp participants will enjoy a special lunch experience before heading to their camps!

To join in the fun, register for a full day camp or a morning and afternoon session at the same campus in the same week.

Karate and Martial Arts:Grades 6 and UpLearn proper self-defense and traditional karate techniques that will help you stay safe when at school, at play, and when on your own. Our instructor, a black belt in Martial Arts brings years of experience in martial arts training to Tri-C. Each class will include karate training, self-defense anddrills.YouwilllearnandpracticebasicKaratetechniques such as strikes and blocks, and throws and joint manipulation in response to various attacks. You will learn how to recognize and deter threats of physical violence. You will also learn the history of this discipline.

Upon successful completion of this camp, you will be able to recognize and avoid confrontational situations using basic self defense techniques to defend yourself if necessary through:

Picasso and Me Visual Arts Adventure: Grades 6 and UpCould you be the next Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, William Hogarth, or Leonardo da Vinci? Interested in expressing yourself through the visual arts? In this camp test your skill and learn new ones in the forms of Anime, Drawing, Caricatures, and Portraits. Have fun exaggerating the likeness of your best friend in a caricature. Create a portrait of your sibling focusing on the special traits of her or his face and expression to capture their personality on canvas. Or, use Anime to create Japanese animation by hand. You will work with pencil, charcoal, pastel, and watercolor paints. Explore the use of color through the blending and shading of pastels and paints. Create your masterpiece from people and things around you including the majesty of the outdoors.

Tri-C Teen Culinary Academy: Grades 6 – 8, Grades 9 and UpExplore the exciting world of culinary arts by learning skills from Tri-C expert chefs. Learn the basics of food safety and proper handling of utensils. Have fun learning proper culinary techniques like chopping, dicing, and cutting while making delicious and healthy wraps, pizzas, treats, and more! Discover hospitality careers with knowledgeable and successful chefs while having fun cooking!

Maybe you want to know what happened to dinosaursoryou’reinterestedinnatureinallitsamazingforms.Inthiscampyou’llexplorenewareasrelatedto weather, the Earth, oceanography and science each day including the cause and effect of extreme weather from typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes and tsunamis to earthquakes, mud slides and other earth-rattling events. You’lllookatEarth’shistoryfrominsectstodinosaursandexamine the ocean and how it affects weather. Projects you create will help you grasp the topics discussed in camp. The Clothes Rack:Grades 6 and UpLike fashion? Want to start a career in design? Or, do you just want to make a gift for a special person in your life? You will practice designing your own clothes and accessories using design software. You will then practice those techniques by making an easy item of clothing or an accessory item. Learn basic sewing techniques, fitting and terminology. All supplies are included. Machines are available for you and your fellow designers to share in class. You do not need design or sewing experience. Basic computer knowledge or gaming experience is helpful. Sewing machines are provided but may need to be shared.

Driver Ed: Classroom Instruction for Ages 15 Years 5 Months and Up(THIS IS A COURSE AND NOT ELIGIBLE FOR ANY SPECIAL FUNDING PROGRAM)

Learn the classroom part of the OH BMV-approved driver education program. Students less than 18 years of age must attend the mandated 24 hours of classroom instruction required by Ohio law and must pass a written test. Upon successful completion of both parts of the course, students will be awarded a certificate and may qualify for an auto insurance discount. The required text will be given to each student in class. Classroom instruction is given at 3 Tri-C campuses: Eastern, Metro, and Western.

Students must attend each class as scheduled in order to meet the minimum classroom instruction requirement as per Ohio law.

Camp Notes: Students have six months from the start of the classroom instruction to successfully complete both the classroom and road instruction. Ohio law requires students take the classroom and road instruction with the same driving school. Tri-C uses Advanced Driving School. Students register for the classroom instruction through Tri-C by calling 866-933-5178 and for the road instruction directly with Advanced Driving School by calling 440-382-1000. The instructor will review the road instruction and registration procedure in class.
