During RAK week we did various acts of kindness. Our main goal is to further improve

working relationships between teachers, students and the wider community. I can surely

say that we were able to do so! We believe that kindness creates conditions which lead to a

caring environment for students, teachers and community members. Everyone benefits

when individuals, schools, and, communities embrace kindness.

One of the highlights of RAK week at Walworth Academy was that some of our amazing

students gave up 4 hours of their Saturday to be extremely helpful in the local community.

They went to the local super-

store TESCO on the Old Kent

road and helped the checkout

assistants by packing custom-

ers shopping bags. The re-

sponse from the local commu-

nity was great; so many mem-

bers of the public were offer-

ing our students money as they

thought it was for charity. Once informed that it was RAK week at our school and it was

not for a charity, our students were commended for their effort, and commitment to the

local community. We were inundated with comments about how polite and helpful our

students are. They also had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and experience a staff

briefing, and reflect on what it would be like to work in a super store such as TESCO. The

students also had conversations about the world of work, and the different roles at

TESCO. The majority of the young people were really surprised about the broad range of

jobs. The students also had an opportunity to consider their aspirations for their futures.

Dear Parents,

I would firstly like to thank you for all your support through this last academic year. It is clear that when we work together for the benefit of your child, we really can achieve some amazing outcomes.

For example, our attendance has risen to 95.6%, well above national average.

As you well know we are continually raising our expectations and our standards as we are intent on providing an outstanding education for your child.

You will receive your child’s summer term assessments twice: at the end of this term and again in September 2015. We want the grades to be fresh in your mind for the start of our new academic year. Please take the time to check whether or not your child has achieved their end of year (EoY) targets.

We look forward to celebrating our results in August, both our A levels, level 3 BTECs and our GCSE results. We also look forward to celebrating some exceptional achievements :

the students who we expect to achieve at least 2 grades higher than their targets

the 6th Form A level graduates who are intending to study medicine at Russell Group universities.

However, we are never complacent and will continue to increase our attainment year on year.

So, with that, I would like to wish you and your family a wonderful summer holiday and I look forward to welcoming your child back into school on:

“A kingdom for a stage, princes to act…”

On 12th June 2015, ten students from year eight closed the ensemble production of ‘Henry V’ at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe. It was a fantastic production and Walworth Academy’s students really shone on the stage. Twelve weeks of hard work, rehearsing and preparation truly paid off, with not only glowing tributes heard from governors, staff and parents alike, but also from the sound of the rapturous applause which followed a wonderful performance!

Mr Rosser, who led the project commented “It was a real privilege to work with these highly motivated young people who showed talent and commitment, not only during the rehearsal process but also in performance too!

The Big Read!

This term KS3 students have been involved in ‘The Big Read’ which promotes reading for pleasure. All students

were given a book to read in their spare time and at home. Year 7 students read “Iqbal” by Francesco D’Adamo

which tells the true story of Iqbal Masih, sold into slavery by his mother. Year 8 students read “No Turning Back”

by Beverley Naidoo about a young boy who runs away from home and lives on the streets in Johannesburg. Year

9 students read “A Little Piece of Ground”, set in occupied Palestine. The book explores what it’s like to live in a

war-zone and tells the story of a Palestinian teenager and his friends who play cat and mouse with the Israeli army.

All students completed quizzes on different sections of

the book and nominated students spoke in assembly

about what they’d enjoyed about their book.

The best speakers in each year group were rewarded

with a trip to Waterstone’s to pick a book of their

choice as well as two Nando’s vouchers and two cinema

tickets for a night out with a family member. The Big

were Ellie Barnes 7.4, Alisha Henry 7.5, Yahya Al Mak-

noon 7.6 and Mojeed Addo 7.8 who spoke about

“Iqbal”. Winners in Year 8 were Folarin Awo 8.3, James

Feeley 8.4, Salwa Serroukh 8.7 and Philicty Boateng who

spoke about “No Turning Back” and winners in Year 9 were Adesayo Adeoye 9.2, Jack Burt 9.4, Alice Burton 9.5

and Taylor Buttigieg 9.7 who spoke about “A Little Piece of Ground”.

Finally, all students were given a reading list of great reads which you’ll find in this newsletter. It’s colour coded: red for KS3, green for KS4 and purple for KS5. All the books are available in the school library.

Year 12 Economics students attended an Insight day at Citibank in Canary Wharf on Weds 1st July. Students were given talks on current issues in the UK economy by the Chief Economist of the bank, Mike Saunders and Chief Advisor to Boris Johnson, Gerald Lyons, previously Chief Economist at Standard & Chartered. In addition Citibank employees who came through the graduate programme at the bank explained how the programme works and talked about their current roles, ranging from HR to equities trading. Students were taken on a tour of the bank taking in the trading floors where each desk has multiple screens of live prices and information, the most we counted on one desk was eight screens! The students enjoyed the day, gained valuable insight from the economists and got a feel for the type of career paths available at a major bank.
