Unlike most laboratory professionals, I knew from a young age that the medical laboratory was my calling in life. My first experience in a medical laboratory was in high school. The high school I attended had an explorer program that provided students with an introduction into the hospital setting and many of the departments within. About halfway through the program I knew I wanted more, so upon graduating and passing my certification exams, I entered a CLS program. Sure, I have worked with the stereo typed Debbie Downer.I have even been one a few times. But, I also see the lives that have been directly impacted by the work I do. Lives that have in fact been saved, improved or even just made more comfortable. The biggest impact of being a laboratorian is a very personal one. Each individual laboratory professional has their own vision of a successful career. I believe we choose our own path to our vision and to a large extent, we create it. I have found my own personal little nirvanain my current position. Insights LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT WENDY NORTON, MLS(ASCP)

It is with great excitement that I start my year of service as

President of ASCLS-IL as I look forward to the experiences of the

coming year. I will bring to this organization not only my passion for the

profession, but my passion for using this profession to improve the

quality of healthcare for all. Unlike most laboratory professionals,

I knew from a young age that the medical laboratory was my

calling in life. My first experience in a medical laboratory was in high

school. The high school I attended had an explorer program that provided students with an

introduction into the hospital setting and many of the departments

within. I entered that program with only one thing in mind. The Lab!

I entered into an MLT program. About halfway through the program I

knew I wanted more, so upon graduating and passing my certification

exams, I entered a CLS program. In my career, I have worked in physician offices, hospitals, a MLT program and currently in industry. My twenty years of laboratory work has been rewarding on many levels. Sure, I have worked with the stereo typed “Debbie Downer.” I have even been one a few times. I have worked the long hours, extra shifts and have made personal sacrifices that are so common to a laboratory professional’s experience. I have found

my own personal ‘little

nirvana” in my current position. ASCLS has been the most invaluable

tool I have used to create the path that led me here. Technical skills learned in college are essential, but

they are only one facet of a professional journey. ASCLS has taught me

skills that are just not taught in school or on the job. To those that do not

see the value of membership, I have often said that being a member

of ASCLS is like being a member of a gym. You will get out of your

membership what you put into it. But in all honesty, everyone gets something

out of it when you put into it. Not just you! My

agenda for my term as President is to promote the profession. Promoting the profession will impact many of the issues we currently face such as low enrollment in Clinical Laboratory programs, member recruitment of ASCLS, and quality of laboratory services. I will encourage all Board Certified laboratorians to be loud and proud. Such a large part of healthcare lies in our hands. Let us take credit for the work we do and the outcomes we enable. We have earned it! It is with these beliefs that I will strive as President, to help members create their own path that leads to each individual’s vision of success. As it is through each individual success, that laboratorians as a whole improve healthcare for all.

NIU MLS CLUB - ASCLS-AACC 2014 BAG Stuffing

Hope all of you enjoyed the wonderful ASCLS-AACC meeting in Chicago this year. The MLS Club of Northern Illinois University also benefited by volunteering to stuff bags for the meeting. Thanks to coordination with Michele DuBose of AACC, 12 volunteers traveled to McCormick place to prepare 3800 registration bags and about the same number of Hotel bags for registrants. The MLS Club was grateful to have 3 alumni, 3 clinical students with family members and 1 new student join Ellen Olsen and Jeanne to earn $500.00 for the club. Although it was somewhat grueling work, we were able to catch up with fun conversation during the stuffing. If the photos are somewhat blurry it was because we were moving so fast!
