All throughout the history of the world one clearly sees how many are cut off from the true Source of Life, from the Truth. A human being closes on himself in his selfishness. Unsatisfied with his life, enclosed in his own little world, he becomes a slave to his own ideas, his own thoughts, his own false idols. Thus one loses that essential love which gives true joy and which, alone, can respond to the deep demands of human existence.

In today’s world there are so many who have become estranged form the Church, in the hope of finding something to make them happy. In this world the Lord of Life, even today, continues to call people who accept to follow him closely. Sunday, September 20, 2009, at Santeramo in Colle (BA - Italy), we participated in one of these extraordinary manifestations of the love of God when seven young men said yes to the Lord by Religious Profession. Among them four come from Croatia: Miro Ravlić (40 years), Nikola Tandara (32 years), Zrinko Petar Nikolić (30 years), and Kristijan Žlender (29 years); two are from Angola: Carlos Miguel José Vieira (28 years) and Miguel Quissua Quissola (26 years); and one Italian: Antonino Pensabene, from Reggio Calabria (30 years).

This was the temporary profession by which young men enter into a religious Congregation (in our case, the Company of Mary), promising to God and to the Church to live the vows of chastity, obedience and poverty during one year. Before their novitiate our confreres lived a period of formation in their various countries. Then they came to live together in the novitiate house. The diversity of cultures, languages and opinions provided the opportunity for personal and communal enrichment. First of all, it was an occasion to grow in love by following and imitating Jesus Christ. The celebration of the Eucharist took place in the mother church of Santeramo in Colle. than fifty years. Gratitude for the Montfortian presence was especially shown in the people’s welcome and openness toward the novices, which forged strong and deep bonds. Sweets and cakes never were lacking… and not only sweets. The church was full. In addition to the people of Santeramo, there were our families, the brothers and sisters of the Montfortian family, friends, and also residents from the retirement home and the “Calabrese House” where we went for our apostolate.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided by Father General. In his homily, Father Santino underlined in a special way the need to be just, before God, men of peace, gentle and peaceful. Commentating on the Gospel, Father Santino referred to the paschal journey, the way of the cross, of death, of resurrection: an itinerary to which all the baptized are called to partake in, but, in a special manner, consecrated persons. After the homily came the climatic moment: the profession. Before Father General, each of the novices professed the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, reading his formula of profession in Italian and then in his mother tongue. During this moment filled with emotion, some faces were marked by tears. After the profession Father General handed over to each the religious habit, the Constitutions of the Montfortian family and the Rosary: signs of welcome, fraternity and belonging to the Montfortian Congregation. At the end of the celebration everyone present was invited to take part in refreshments in our garden. The hugs and tears of our grandmothers were an unforgettable memory for us all.

It was a special day, a great gift that God, in his mercy and love, had wanted to give us. The road does not end with the first profession, but it opens the door for a new journey with Mary to meet Jesus. We carry you in our hearts, entrusting you to the Lord in our prayers, and we entrust ourselves to yours.

With gratitude to the Lord, the newly professed Montfortians

Santeramo in Colle: the newly professed with Fr. Efrem, Fr. Milenko and Fr. Mihovil.

From February 14 until August 14, 2009 the third experience of IMI (International Montfortian Institute) took place. The group was composed of 27 participants – 6 Daughters of Wisdom, 10 Brothers of Saint Gabriel and 11 Montfortian priests – plus the animation team: Chantal Rabier, D.W., Paulose Mekkunel, S.G., Dominic Kiong, S.G. and Jorge Enrique González, S.M.M. So, a total of 31 people participated in the experience. 14 countries were represented: 6 participants from Africa; 6 from Latin America and the Caribbean; 15 from Asia (10 from India, 2 from Indonesia, 3 from the Philippines, 1 from Singapore); 4 from Europe. The maternal languages of the participants were Creole, French, Spanish, English, Italian, Chichewa, Lingala, Wolof, Malgache, Tagalog, Tamil and Hindi, among others. Half the group could communicate in French and the other half in English. The youngest in the group was 28 years old and the oldest was 65. We had had all kinds of apostolic experiences: some had worked in the area of the education of young children, adolescents, adults or with disabled persons; others had worked in different stages of formation – youth ministry, vocation animation, postulancy, novitiate, scholasticate and ongoing formation. In addition, some participants were experienced in health care; others in the field of popular missions, the animation of parishes or social ministry … What diversity and richness there is in the Montfortian family throughout the world when you think of it!

The six month program had two main periods. A first stage of five months sought to deepen Montfortian spirituality with the guidance of 20 different presenters who helped us to look at our spiritual heritage. They motivated us to enrich and deepen our way of living according to our specific charism. During these five first months, the General House of the Brothers of Saint Gabriel in Rome (The Casa San Gabriele) was our home. The two communities who live there became our hosts. For most of us, it was our first experience of sharing with the Brothers of Saint Gabriel. I can say that this experience struck us very positively: the welcome of the brothers to their house, their witness of prayer, of generous work, of simplicity and availability gave us the chance to discover the richness of this vocation so important and necessary in the Church. This time also allowed us to deepen the bonds among ourselves. It was an occasion to taste the sweetness of our religious vocation and a “common link” between us and so many religious men and women, brothers and sisters of the same spiritual family. Each week there was a resource person who helped us to deepen an aspect of our Montfortian religious community life in the context of today. So we had the privilege of meeting 20 different presenters: 14 from the Montfortian family (5 D.W., 4 S.G., and 5 S.M.M.) and 6 from other religious families. Each one of them helped us with simplicity and depth to taste the life and writings of Father de Montfort. After that, it was up to us to let ourselves be illuminated by these texts according to our needs and the personal, social or community context in which the mission awaited us. The group sharing after the presentations and very often the informal sharing among us was an enormous richness. How many ideas, insights and new directions for personal growth and the realization of our missionary task came from these encounters!

The last month in France allowed us to visit the principal historic places of Father de Montfort and to get to know Montfortian traditions better. This experience allowed us above all to encounter different respective communities of our three congregations. We shared together the joy of living this spiritual richness. What a beautiful experience seeing so many brothers, sisters and fathers living with joy and hope their commitment in the Church as sons and daughters of Louis Grignion de Montfort and Marie Louise of Jesus.

What have I retained from this experience? When I look at such diversity (nationality, age, sex, language, culture, formation,

apostolic experience, etc.), I am aware of the richness of the group and I rejoice to see how we have succeeded in living together for six months; to share our experiences, to pray together despite the difficulty of language, to weave good connections among us and even to build friendships. Although we were unknown to each other in the beginning, little by little we became a community of brothers and sisters sharing the same ideal. How?

I see here the great richness of IMI: to dare to move out not only of our countries but of ourselves by deciding to go beyond our limits in order to meet an other who is my brother, my sister. Of course, we can admit that in the midst of such diversity there could be moments of tension and normal difficulties which are a part of this experience, a real experience of community life. More than once, I saw individuals put many things into perspective by renouncing their own way of seeing or doing things, for the good of a greater communion. I also saw them overcoming differences with humility and patience in order to contribute to the building up of the community. A spirit of joy and fraternal affection accompanied the group to the end. On several occasions, while looking at the group, I meditated on and observed how much the power of our Montfortian spirituality is found precisely in this dynamism which comes from the love of God. This dynamism which makes us capable of emptying ourselves in order to offer ourselves totally to others as Wisdom did at the moment of the Incarnation to restore a wounded communion: TOTUS TUUS! Yes, I see now in this expression, so dear to our spirituality, the principle of a life of communion with Mary and with Christ. It is at the same time the seed of an authentic community life. A seed capable of transforming our differences into riches and making us able to pass from mistrust to trust, from diversity to communion, in order to witness in the wounded world of today that universal fraternity is possible, because God has loved us first.

Here are two other testimonies of individuals who lived the experience: “I read many times the works of Father de Montfort and I have gone further into our

spirituality, above all Love of Eternal Wisdom, but the experience of IMI has been very important for me because it has drawn my attention to many different aspects of the spirituality and its link with concrete experience. I appreciated very much the history of the three Congregations. I knew the history of the Daughters of Wisdom and the Brothers of Saint Gabriel, but as far as the Montfort Missionaries were concerned, the only thing I knew was the history of Father de Montfort and that was all. The historic events with their problems, difficulties, uncertainties have emphasized the importance of those who have gone before us and have transmitted to us the spirituality. From that also follows the importance of our mission for our times and for the future, and the necessity of always updating and personalizing the approach and the transmission because spirituality is not a set of ideas to transmit but a pathway, an experience to live, to share, to suggest, to facilitate.” (Sister Dell’Incarnazione, D.W., Italy)

“IMI was a gift, a time of grace for me. I feel really privileged to have lived this experience. I thank God for this. This time has been a time of renewal for my spiritual life. I feel that this experience has transformed my life. It has allowed me to deepen my faith, to strengthen my convictions as a Daughter of Wisdom. I feel very proud of my founders, Saint Louis Marie de Montfort and Blessed Marie-Louise of Jesus. They have evoked in me especially the desire to imitate their lives, their spirit of detachment, their simplicity of life, humility, prayer, compassion and love of the poor. Living in an international community has also been a very enriching experience and it has made me appreciate the culture of other

persons and respect the differences. That has been a process of giving and receiving. It has also helped me to discover the importance of collaboration within the Montfortian family. Now, I am prouder to belong to this great family.” (Sister Mary Immaculate, D.W., Malawi).

At the end of this experience, each one left with the commitment to share the richness of the experience in their respective entity. May the Lord bless the initiatives of each person in this effort, because our spirituality is a treasure which the world of today needs. I am sure of that!

On October 19 of this year, the patriarch of Lisbon, Dom José Policarpo, consecrated the new parish church of Póvoa de Santo Adrião, where the Montfort Missionaries have worked for forty years. The celebration symbolized very well the unity, variety and collaborative presence of the entire parish community.

After completing the Parish Centre in 2001, a centre for Christian formation as well as social services, such as nursery school, housing assistance, and a “Fund to help families in need”; the Christian community, tired of waiting for possible state aid for the construction of the church, began efforts on its own to bring about this dream. And the dream has become a reality.

The Eucharist for the consecration of the church and the feast which followed displayed well all the dynamism and active participation of the lay people who collaborate with our Montfortian community. But it was also beautiful to see almost all the Montfortians of Portugal united on this occasion to thank the Lord together for the realization of this building for the service of the common good.

The choice which the people made for the title of the parish, Our Lady of the Annunciation, is testimony to the presence of our community lived in the light of the missionary and Marian charism which Saint Louis Marie de Montfort left us as a heritage.

Our entire Congregation rejoices and accompanies our confreres of Portugal in their missionary service.

VViissiitt ooff tthhee BBuurrssaarr GGeenneerraall ttoo CCoonnggoo In my opinion, a visit to our brothers is one of the more effective means to maintain

the spirit of communion which characterizes religious life. A visit, a warm welcome, a good conversation, is the open door to resolve problems, to clarify false ideas and to exchange knowledge. I could observe that during my visit in July to our Montfortian confreres of the General Delegation of Congo. It was my first journey to Africa, and it was a very enriching experience for me. The trip was motivated by recent decisions of the General Council, together with the superiors of the Montfortian provinces and delegations. The goal was to orient the Financial Technical Support Committee to the reality of countries that need outside aid to maintain their mission, to continue their activities for formation and to develop a progressive course toward self-sufficiency.

Three things among others were striking to me during this visit to Congo: the fraternal welcome of our brothers, their efforts to realize the mission despite the economic and structural limits of a country which has not yet overcome the consequences of the war, and, finally, the beauty of the Congolese people in their cultural and religious expressions, without forgetting the natural beauty and the details of our journey on the Congo River to our former mission in Isangi. My positive reception began in Kinshasa, at the procure of the Scheut Fathers. There, a lay friend of the Fathers guided me throughout my trip to Kisangani. I felt really at home. At each of the places, our meetings were very fruitful. We treated economic questions and the accounts of the delegation. We also looked at current projects and those to be started. Our missionaries must overcome many difficulties in order to exercise their mission – among others, the difficulties due to the natural setting, long river voyages, paths that are complicated even with a motorbike, and in certain cases, numerous hours of walking when there are no other means to reach a mission. The people of Congo, at least in the communities where I went, are a magnificent people, warm and pleasant despite serious problems caused by poverty. They are a religious people, with a captivating religiosity, particularly in their lively and participative liturgies. And what to say about all this angelic beauty which the choirs produced with songs typical of their country! In conclusion, I realize that it is in solidarity with countries which have a better economic condition and with a good management of projects on the part of the entities which are more in need that we will be able to help achieve their financial self-sufficiency for formation and mission for the Kingdom of God. May Saint Louis de Montfort help us to work in a dynamic and communal manner. Many thanks to the Montfortian confreres of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

““WWiitthh MMaarryy iinn tthhee HHeeaarrtt ooff tthhee WWoorrdd ooff GGoodd”” The Montfortian Marian Spirituality Days organized by the Province of Italy in

Loreto, October 2-4, 2009.

About 230 people participated in the “Days”, for the most part those belonging to Marian groups which have already followed for a time a journey of faith in light of the spirituality of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort, guided by the Montfort Missionaries, the Daughters of Wisdom and also by lay people. In particular, there were groups from Reggio Calabria, Triggiano (BA) with their parish priest, Bari Vecchia e Lioni (AV), Santeramo in Colle (BA), Rome-Monte Mario and Rome-via Prenestina, Trinitapoli (FG), Bergamo, Bologna, Arbizzano di Negrar (VR). Other individuals participated in the experience with joy: the religious of the Fraternity “Arca di Maria” from Penne (PE), the Daughters of Wisdom from Lugo and Torino, friends from Milan, Vigevano, Brescia, Agrigento, Padua and Venice, members of the “Consecratio Mundi” movement. They were all lifted up by the liveliness of a group of ten children under the care of their animator. The presence of Fr. Santino Brembilla, Superior General, Fr. Luciano, Provincial of Italy, and numerous Montfort Missionaries was much appreciated.

“With Mary in the Heart of the Word of God”: the day’s reflections developed around this nucleus, by welcoming the invitation of the final message of the Synod of Bishops on the Word of God to sit down at this table in order to be nourished and to live not by bread alone but also by what comes from the mouth of God. The Virgin Mary shines forth in this way as the living model of every personal and communal encounter with the Word, welcoming it in faith. From this perspective, the Montfortian Consecration is deeply rooted in the Word of God, read, listened to, prayed and lived, after the example of Mary. What Jesus said about the foolish man and the wise man who built their houses also goes for the Montfortian consecration. If it is not built on the Word of God, it risks being constructed on sand, and therefore would be weak, incapable of being supported over time, inconstant, unfruitful, a fire of straw, with the emotions of a moment. Above all, it does not help one to grow to the full stature of Jesus Christ. The “Days” of Loreto were yet another sign of how the spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort borne fruit and continues to ripen its fruit in the Church.
