Introduction to CAT SchemeThe Certified Accounting Technician Scheme (CAT) is composed of both ex-ams and practical experience. It provides a solid foundation for those wish-ing to fulfil an accounting role at technician level or as a fast track towards ACCA accountant status.

To obtain CAT status you will need to complete a set of exams and one year’s practical experience. The course is designed to be flexible and suit your own needs, allowing the student to study and gain experience at their own pace.

Upon completion of the CAT Scheme you can apply to use CAT letters after your name and have the opportunity to join the CAT Alumni. Alternatively, the CAT scheme en-ables you to move directly to Part 2 of the ACCA professional Scheme exams.

RegistrationAll students are required:

Examination:

There is no formal restriction on the number of exams a student can take at any one exam session. Students are advice to attempt a maximum of four papers in at each exam sitting. Although students may sit papers in any order it is advisable to attempt all papers in numerical order. There are nine papers in total to complete including two out of three option papers at Advanced Level. You can choose to change your optional pa-pers if you wish.

Examinations are taken in June and De-cember. Courses will run in two periods:

LIT is a qualified CBE centre. Regis-tered students can sit Introductory and Intermediate Levels of the CAT ex-ams papers as computer-based exams (CBEs). CBEs allow you to sit exams outside the set June and December exam sessions and access your results immediately. You may contact the In-stitute to arrange for further details or simply to arrange an examination date.

The Standard fee is currently £37 per paper. We require students book their CBE exam date at least 4 working days in advance. You will need to be registered as a CAT student and have your student registration number be-fore sitting any CBE.

Some Glimpses of LIT ActivitiesIn order to qualify for the CAT scheme you will need to complete all 9 papers and gain at least one year’s supervised work experience. Practi-cal experience can be gained at any size organisation in any type of busi-ness and in any combination of sec-tors. While the student is expected to arrange their own practical experi-ence ACCA has resources available to help you secure a position, please visit ACCA website.

Entry requirements and Exemptions

You must normally be aged 16 or above to register, but there are no formal academic qualifications necessary. If you have no aca-demic qualifications, you will be expected to complete all three Levels of the Certified Accounting Technician examinations.Holders of certain qualifications may receive exemptions from some of the papers.

You may claim exemption from the Introductory Level exams if you satisfy the one year’s practical work experience requirement and can verify this by completing your Technician Training Record (TTR), which will be sent to you when you have registered as a CAT student.

In the new syllabus you will complete nine exams, divided into three Levels. These are all designed to test the knowledge, skills and under-standing you will need to work in accounting support roles. The ex-ams cover the key areas of accounting, finance, IT and management. Advanced Level exams are of equivalent standard to the first year of a university degree and offer a choice of options to suit your career needs.At Advanced Level, an element of choice is introduced so that you can tailor your learning to suit your work experience and career aspirations.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is one of the world’s leading professional accountancy organisations, with 320,000 students and members in 160 countries. The ACCA qualification is widely recognised and highly respected. Its members are found across the globe in all economic sectors as professional financial accountants

Registration

All students are required:• To register directly with ACCA as a student. Enrolment at LIT does not automatically register you with ACCA. • Register for specific exams with ACCA. Once you are registered with ACCA they will send you a form for this purpose.

• Register with LIT as a student. Students can register online at www.accaglobal.com or write to ACCA. at the address shown on page 10.

Students who do not possess the minimum entry qualifications outline in PER and are aged 21 years or over. The MSER re-quires the student pass papers 1.1 and 1.2 within two years of registering with ACCA.

Practical Experience

l You have 10 years to complete all exam papers from the date of registration.l The pass mark for all papers is 50%.l Exams are held twice a year in June and December.l Between one and four papers can be taken at any one sitting.l You must complete papers in numerical order unless an exemption has been awarded.l All Part 1 papers must be completed before any Part 3 papers can be taken.l One of the two optional papers from Part 3 must be completed before the core papers are attempted.l Part 3 has three core papers (3.5, 3.6 and 3.7), all of which must be completed in the same examination session. If a student fails one of the core papers they will have the next two examination periods to pass the third paper. Following this, if the third paper is not passed then all three papers will have to be re-taken.

Yearly Fees at LIT

Practical experience requirements must be satisfied along with passing the professional examinations in or-der to become an associate member of ACCA. The student will be re-quired to present evidence of 3 years supervised relevant practical training.

Practical training can be gained in any organisation or country. It may be completed before, during or af-ter the passing of professional ex-aminations. Thus, ACCA provides genuine flexibility for the student attempting to attain associate status.

OR: £250 per paper whether the candi-date chooses to undertake the study on a full-time, evening or weekend basis.

The fees include the revision courses and lecture notes. Examination Texts, Kits and Notes are however not in-cluded in the package and you will be required to make your own ar-rangements to get the relevant texts

The CIMA Qualifications

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is one of the world’s leading professional management institutes, and a member of the QTP (Quality through Partnership) scheme. CIMA is a widely respected and recognised professional qualification sought out by many employers across the business world. Students de-velop a diverse range of skills within accounting, decision making, anal-ysis, business strategy and management. It is the ideal qualification for those wishing to advance their career prospects into a variety of roles in financial and business management. Relevant professional fields include: commerce, financial services, public sector or management consultancy. Once you have become qualified, you automatically become a mem-ber of CIMA. This gives you the privilege to act as Management Ac-countant for entities, whether in manufacturing, commercial / ser-vice organisations or in the public or private sector of the economy.

All students are required:u To register directly with CIMA as a student. Enrolment at LIT does not register you with CIMA.

In order to study for the CIMA, you can either be a school leaver, university graduate, or a mature stu-dent holding any of the following:

At least two A’ Levels and three GCSE Passes (five separate subjects)• BTEC National Award• AAT Intermediate• NVQ or GNVQ Level 3• A degree in a relevant subject.• CAT• Overseas qualification equivalent to the above.Depending on your previous academ-ic background / qualifications you may enter at either certificate level or managerial level.

Exemptions There is a possibility for exemption for some qualifications enabling you to enter at a more advanced stage of the course. LIT can offer advice on the issue of ex-emptions. However, it must be noted that this is a matter dealt with by the official CIMA body. Those seeking exemptions will have to make exemption applications to CIMA for their approval. Examination RulesThe examination structure offers stu-dents the flexibility to study various combinations of subjects at their own pace. However, progression rules do apply at each level of study• Certificate level: All papers under the certificate level must be completed as a pre-requisite entry requirement to the subsequent levels. These papers are 5 in total and are tested by computer based as-sessment. LIT is a registered CBA centre enabling students to sit exams with us at their own pace.• Managerial Level and strategic Level:All papers under these two levels are three hours and paper based, students are offered two exam date sittings in a year.

• TOPCIMA:This is one 3 hour paper please visit CIMA website for further details at www.cimaglobal.com.

Exam Regulations

All Managerial Level papers must be completed before a student can progress onto the strategic level papers. It is entirely up to the stu-dent the order and number of pa-pers he/she sits at the managerial level.

At the strategic level all papers must be taken at the first sitting. However, resits can be taken in any order and combination.

LIT is a qualified CBA centre. CIMA offers all certificate level papers C1-C5 via CBA. You may contact the Institute for further details or simply arrange an examination date. Certifi-cate level papers can be taken at any time throughout the year.

The New 2005 Syllabus structure comprises three levels, each level is self contained in the sense that an award is obtained when the stu-dent completes a level. (see CIMA awards below).

At each level students study sub-jects from each of the three learn-ing pillars (see above diagram).

• Certificate Level: Comprises 5 papers and upon its completion the student is awarded a CIMA Certificate in Business Ac-counting.

• Managerial Level: Comprises 6 papers and upon its completion the student is awarded a CIMA Advanced Diploma in Man-agement Accounting.

• strategic Level: Comprises 3 papers and upon its completion the student is awarded a CIMA Passed Finalist Certificate.

• Member of CIMA: Strategic level plus TOPCIMA and after a period of relevant work ex-perience the student is invited to be-come a Member of CIMA.

CIMA Fees

The annual fee covers twelve sub-jects, i.e. six subjects per term. How-ever, students are advised to attempt between two and four papers at any one exam sitting, although it is pos-sible to sit six.Note: £250 per subject whether the candidate chooses to undertake the study on a full-time, evening or weekend basis.The fees include the revision cours-es and lecture notes. Examination Texts, Kits and Notes are however, not included in the packages and the candidate is required to make their own arrangements to acquire these items

Getting qualified is easy given the flexibility of the CIMA structure. At LIT we do the hard work so that you can study at your own pace and struc-ture your exams around your own schedule commitments. Students can choose from full-time study, part-time study or evening and week-end classes.

Study Pattern

• Full-time students: CIMA recommends between 2-4 pa-pers at any one examination sitting. Generally, this means Certificate lev-els will require a minimum of two sit-tings taking 1 year to complete. The remaining levels can be completed within 6 months each at a minimum.• Part-time/ evening and weekend students: CIMA recommends between 2-4 pa-pers at any one examination sitting. Students of the above category are provided with the greatest flexibility and can complete the course in their own time.

Graduate Diploma Course provides an opportunity to obtain an Ordi-nary Degree level qualification in the Management Information Sys-tems, which then leads to BSc. (Hons), offered by the University of Greenwich. It affords the abil-ity to enhance career opportunities by awarding a qualification, which will be nationally and internation-ally recognised. Management of the programme rests with the University and University regulations apply in all cases. University teaching staff will be in frequent and direct contact with staff and students at LIT.

Suitable for candidates wishing to gain the knowledge and skills to work flu-ently with computers and in a techno-logical driven environment. Comple-tion of the foundation Diploma satisfies entry to the IMIS Diploma. Candidates having completed the Foundation Di-ploma are working at the equivalent level of early entry analysts.

The IMIs syllabus is divided into four discrete levels: 1. Foundation diploma 2. diploma. 3. Higher diploma. 4. graduate diploma.

A Higher diploma:

The Higher Diploma course will ad-vance the students’ knowledge in var-ious IS fields including operations, programming, systems analysis and design and computer management. The Higher Diploma award equates with the Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/HND).

The Diploma builds on those skills acquired at the foundation level. Successful completion leads to the award of a Diploma, which equates to a National Certificate.
