AcademicsThe University of Deusto has been a pioneer in the academic scenario in Spain, always trying to give an answer to the professional and human demands of its students. A good example of that is the fact that it was the first Spanish university to offer business studies. The Business School, founded in 1916, is still one of the most prestigious business centers in Spain.

Together with Business and Economics, the University of Deusto offers degrees in Law, Engineering, Psychology, Education, and Social Sciences. With over 10.000 students, the university also offers numerous specialized Diplomas, Masters, and Ph.D. programs. Our Programs address international (non-exchange program) students. They combine Spanish Language courses at all levels (elementary to high-advanced, 2-3 hours per day) with courses taught in Spanish and English that are specifically designed for international students in areas such as Hispanic and Basque culture, literature, grammar, international relations, economy, and business.

In Semester Programs, students can also take courses with Spanish students at different Schools of the University of Deusto.

Course DescriptionsCourses Open To Both Programs(Spanish Language and Culture, and Business, International Relations and Spanish)

Culture, Politics and Economy in Contemporary Spanish Society 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

This course offers an introduction to Spanish culture and civilization so that students can become familiar with the social, economic and political structures of Spain today. The focus will be placed on some specific aspects which make Spain both appealing and richly varied: its recently-restored ancestral monarchy, its organization in autonomous areas (which may be a solution to historical conflicts), or the fact that it is one of the main tourist destinations in the world and, at the same time, the country of Don Quijote, Don Juan, Lorca, bullfighting and soccer. All these features of life, history and politics will be analyzed in the course.

Spanish Language I-IV 10 U.S. credits / 16 ECTS

The main goal of these courses is to help students develop their communicative competence in Spanish through practice in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). All functional and grammatical contents will be approached from a communicative perspective, which will require active participation of students in class at all times. Upon arrival, students will take a language test to be placed in the Spanish course that best suits their needs. The courses are aimed at students with the following levels of Spanish:

• an elementary level of Spanish or no Spanish (level I)• an upper elementary level of Spanish (level II)• an intermediate level of Spanish (level III)• an advanced level of Spanish (level IV)

Academic Spanish3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Spring Semester)

The aim of the course is to develop practical aspects related to academic writing. It is specially aimed at students who have completed their Spanish requirements and already have a high advanced level of Spanish, and wish to consolidate their knowledge in order to achieve a high degree of linguistic competence at the university level.

Basque Culture and Language 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The history of the Basque Country has come a long way from the ancient times before the Roman conquest of the Peninsula to the present day. What we can see nowadays is a highly modernized European country which is going through a promising time. The course will help students become familiar with Basque geography, history and economy, as well as with the Basque culture, traditions and language (euskera, an ancient language of unknown origin). These topics, whose aim is to offer a global vision on the Basque Country, will be dealt with by means of group activities and discussions.

Europe in the World 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The goal of the course is to provide a general vision of current Europe in the world at different levels. It will focus on the analysis of the European Union both as the main and practically only European actor in the international scenario, and as one of the main most recent experiences in terms of social organizations. The so-called European social and economic model and the limits of the European Union will also be addressed, as well as the role of the E.U. in the field of foreign relations.

Spanish through Drama3 U.S. Credits / 5 ECTS

The main goal of the course is to improve students’ communicative competence in Spanish. Students’ work will focus on literary, drama, and cultural contents by means of tasks based on actual excerpts of plays by renown Spanish speaking playwrights from different literary periods (mainly, but not necessarily, from the 20th century). Excerpts will be analyzed as literary texts, but also as samples of aspects of Spanish culture (with an emphasis on interculturalism), and as potential starting points of new texts to be created by students. At the end of the course, some or all of the new scenes will be performed by students for their program mates.

Business Spanish3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The objective of the course is to help students improve their communication skills in the area of business. The course is mainly based on a reader containing material taken from various sources, which specifi cally addresses the use of the language in the different fi elds of the working world. The communicative approach (both oral and written) will be used in the classroom. The class will focus on the four language skills: listening and written comprehension, writing and oral skills. The reader will be implemented with complementary material taken from newspapers, magazines, and/or other textbooks of Business Spanish, according to the interests and necessities of students.

Spanish through Gastronomy 3 U.S. Credits / 5 ECTS

The main goal of the course is to improve students’ communicative and cultural competence in Spanish. Meal times and the development of personal and professional relations around meals are very important aspects of the Spanish culture. Students will become familiar with Spanish food culture by focusing on vocabulary and grammar structures pertaining to the topic, as well as on habits and traditions in different regions in Spain. They will also get to know the process of cooking some of the most typical dishes of Spanish cuisine and, particularly, of Basque cuisine (tortilla de patata, paella, natillas…).

Experiential Learning Courses Open to Both Programs(Spanish Language and Culture, and Business, International Relations and Spanish)*Advanced level of Spanish required

Service Learning: Participation and Development4 U.S. credits / 6 ECTS

The objective of the course is to favor a holistic training of students as individuals, professionals and citizens.

It focuses on developing attitudes and values such as opening up to social reality and sensitivity towards global injustice, social exclusion, and the situation of the victims of such reality. The course will be based on the service learning methodology, and includes a solidarity service that aims at meeting actual community needs and favoring students’ learning process through experience.

Internship in Business 4 U.S. credits / 6 ECTS

Addressees: Students with a background in areas such as Business, International Relations, Economics, or Public Relations who wish to experience a work environment related to their professional interests.

Goal: The internship seeks to complement the student’s academic background with an active participation in a work setting. Students will gain professional self-awareness through observation, participation and analysis of professional activities, and through the interaction with colleagues in a work environment related to their fi eld.

Internship in Education 4 U.S. credits / 6 ECTS

Addressees: Students who wish to double major in Spanish and Education at their home university.

Goal: The internship focuses on the observation of Spanish or English language classes, and on the active participation of students as teachers in English classes, in primary or secondary education centers. Through these activities, selected readings, written assignments, and regular meetings with their advisor, students will acquire useful skills for their future career as teachers.

Courses Specific to the Spanish Language and Culture Semester Program

Introduction to the Analysis of Hispanic Literature 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The main goal of the course is to improve students’ ability to use techniques for reading, writing, and analyzing literary texts by means of appropriate methodological and critical tools, as well as to help them to acquire a general knowledge of Spanish and Latin American literature of all periods. There will be a special emphasis either on the period from medieval times to the 19th century, or on 19th and 20th century through representative works from different genres. By analyzing those texts, students will also explore the underlying social, cultural, and literary values shown in them.

Spanish Cinema and Literature3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Spring Semester)

The fi rst half of the course shows the links between cinema and literature by means of the analysis of the constituents (languages and expression techniques) of those works of art that are books and movies. In the second half, taking the history of cinema as a time referent, the course will focus on the artistic manifestations throughout the 20th century, both by looking at movie adaptations of literary works and by analyzing the use of movie techniques in the Spanish literature.

Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The goal is to provide students with a high level of Spanish with a basic knowledge of linguistics. It consists of a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, the nature of language, and linguistic analysis, and will survey some of the major areas of linguistics, such as Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax. The syllabus will cover both theoretical and practical issues, and will focus on the development of students’ analytical skills. In order to achieve this goal, all theoretical classes will be implemented with practical (individual) exercises which will enhance students’ understanding of the main linguistic notions.

Survey of Spanish Literature 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Fall Semester)

The main goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge about the different periods in Spanish Literature from its beginning, with a special emphasis on Golden Age (16th and 17th centuries) movements and trends, and also to help them explore the cultural, social, and literary values shown on the selection of representative works from those periods. Furthermore, literary texts will offer students the chance to develop their reading and discussion techniques, and will also be the basis of the written papers to be assigned by the instructor, who will offer guidance on these assignments.

Courses Specific to the Business, International Relations and Spanish Semester Program

Economy of the European Union3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Taught in English)

The course aims at studying the theoretical framework for the process of European integration, as well as offering a general overview of the E.U. as a global actor and of how it works. The E.U. budget will be analyzed as an economic instrument to accomplish the E.U. objectives. The internal market and the common competition policy will also be studied. Throughout the course, the role of the E.U. as one of the most important global actors in the world trade will be emphasized. The key challenge companies have to face is the acquisition and nourishment of profi table relationships with their customers. Organizations with a strong marketing orientation and a clear brand strategy are the strongest competitors in the market and are typically the leaders in their sector. Effective marketing management is an increasingly key ingredient in corporate success. This course is an introduction to the theory and application of marketing in a global marketplace. Marketing topics covered include marketing research, marketing strategies, marketing policies (product development, pricing, channels and communication) among others. Furthermore, the last part of the course will be dedicated to a critical view of marketing and the way global companies have been acting during the last century and a half in our planet and the consequences for the future.

International Financial Systems3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Taught in English)

The course attempts to analyze the structure of the Financial System, studying the different markets and products it offers in order to allow fl ows of capital. Students will acquire a framework for understanding the Financial System, its evolution and products, and will be able to assess fi nancial instruments in a simple way. The concepts discussed in this course are a sound basis for anyone wanting to work in fi nancial markets or instruments. Furthermore, students will be able to fully understand the main debates surrounding fi nancial issues.

Organizational Behavior contributes to an organization’s success by improving the performance and well-being of its people. Common research and practice areas for Organizational Behavior include Job Analysis, Personnel Recruitment and Selection, Work Motivation, Leadership and Executive Coaching, Human Resources (HHRR), and Group/Team Performance, among others. The purpose of this course is to give students a general overview of organizational behavior, by enhancing learning about people in organizations and helping students prepare themselves to be organizational leaders.

Transatlantic Relations: The U.S.A. and the E.U.3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Taught in English)

The aim of the course is to provide a general framework for the relations between the U.S. and the E.U. In order to do so, landmark documents and economic relations between those partners will be analyzed, taking into account the importance of the transatlantic fl ow of goods, services, and investments. The point of view of the U.S. and the E.U. concerning environment will also be studied, as well as how the issue of fi ghting terrorism is handled by both partners by analyzing the different responses given by western democracies to international terrorism after the 9/11 attacks. Finally, the course will focus on the foreign affairs policy of the two countries.

International Business3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Taught in English)

This course seeks to help students understand the strategic issues and tradeoffs in a global context and assess the strategic performance of global companies. It is intended to cover two basic learning dimensions: the fi rst one seeks to improve student´s ability to understand the present global environment and, therefore, be able to identify, analyze, and execute strategies in the global business environment. Secondly, students will be led to understand the strategic management of global companies. The course draws on a number of different academic disciplines including economics, political science, international fi nance, trade and relations, cultural dimensions, etc. The goal of the approach for students is to understand globalization and its implications for fi rms from a transdisciplinary focus, all integrated into and understood from a systemic perspective of reality.

Culture and Politics in Contemporary Spain3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The course offers an introduction to Spanish culture and civilization so that students become familiar with the social, economic and political structures of Spain today. Our study will be focused on some specific aspects which make Spain both appealing and richly varied: its recently-restored ancestral monarchy, its organisation in autonomous areas which may be a solution to historical conflicts, the fact that it is one of the main tourist destinations in the world and, at the same time, the country of Don Quijote, Don Juan, Lorca, bullfighting and soccer. The course will also offer an introduction to Basque culture: geography, history and culture.

Introduction to Hispanic Literature3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The main goal of the course is to improve students’ reading, writing, and analytical skills, and their use of appropriate methodological instruments for the interpretation of literary texts, as well as to help them acquire a general knowledge of two specific moments of Spanish and Latin American literature through representative poetic and fiction works. By analyzing these texts, students will also explore the underlying social, cultural, and literary values on them.

Spanish I-IV4 U.S. credits / 6 ECTS

The goal of these courses is to enable the students to comprehend and produce written and oral messages commonly used in daily life within a communicative framework, which will favor and require their participation. It is aimed at students at:

• an elementary level of Spanish or no Spanish (level I)• an upper-elementary level of Spanish (level II)• an intermediate level of Spanish (level III)• an advanced level of Spanish (level IV)

Spain in Europe3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

This course will analyze the current situation of the process of integration in Europe, as well as the role of Spain in the building of this new Europe. After the characterization of the European Union within the area of international organizations, we will review the main steps in the process of integration to the present day. There will also be an analysis of the institutions that make the system work and of their main working areas and the EU budget. The position of Spain in this process will also be studied.

Advanced Spanish Grammar, Composition and Translation 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

This course is aimed at advanced students of Spanish who wish to improve their knowledge of Spanish grammar and its use in the Spanish speaking world. The course is designed to offer theoretical explanations of crucial aspects of Spanish grammar; while doing so, we will point out the main differences with English (if any), and practice these structures in the context of ‘English to Spanish’ and ‘Spanish to English’ translation by using different techniques/strategies according to the type of text. The final versions of the texts translated into Spanish will be revised with the criteria that apply to regular compositions, so that the students can rewrite them to yield a prose that reads like Spanish and sounds like Spanish. This will allow students to establish a more solid foundation in their knowledge of Spanish grammar/vocabulary; at the same time, they will be more aware of the formal and stylistic features of different types of texts in both languages.

Spanish Literature in the 20th Century 3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS

The course will focus on last century’s Spanish literature. We will begin by introducing the main problems of the time, the socio-political context, the aesthetic and artistic trends of the century, etc., and will also analyze some very significant texts. Unamuno and Machado will lead us to the study of the intense literary movement of 1898, Lorca and other writers will help us understand the so-called Generation of 1927, we will study post-war literature through the existentialist poems by Dámaso Alonso, through the social poetry of Blas de Otero, and also through the plays of Buero Vallejo, the most important Spanish playwright of the last decades; finally, the end of the 20th century will be analyzed through different fiction and poetry texts by current women writers.

Spain’s Society and Economy in the European Union3 U.S. credits / 5 ECTS (Taught in English)

This course offers an introduction to Spanish society and economy. We will begin by analyzing several specific aspects about Spain’s population and political situation during the last decades. Subsequently, different issues in Spanish current economy will be discussed. Since 1975, Spain has undergone important changes: the restoration of the monarchy, and the establishment of a democratic political system, as well as the integration in the European Union. These features of life, history, politics, and economy will be analyzed during the course, both in the classes and on the tours.

This comprehensive course offers an engaging look into new and traditional strategic management topics. Its thorough coverage helps students develop an understanding of the wide range of theories and research available in this field—from competitive strategy and industry analysis to environmental trends and ethics. Integration of international issues provides an essential understanding of global economics and its impact on business activities in any location. Special attention is focused on the analysis of US and European firms through the discussion of case studies, as well as other topics related to industrial analysis, such as strategy formulation and implementation, evaluation and control, international entrepeneurship, and technological innovation.

Course DescriptionThe course (60 h.) is aimed at teachers of Spanish as a foreign language seeking to increase their teaching resources through a dynamic immersion experience in the Spanish social and cultural context. Class activities, which will be very practical and full of academic content, will be implemented by other out-of-the classroom activities (visits to landmarks, popular festivals, food tasting tours…) that will allow teachers to get to know the reality of Spanish culture and society at fi rst hand.

Before your arrival in Bilbao, the CIDE staff will provide you with detailed information about the different housing options available for Program participants. They will process all the applications and remain available to try to solve any diffi culties that might arise.

Residence HallCoed dorm located close to campus. All rooms are single and have a bathroom. Three daily meals, bed linen and towels are provided. Facilities include the following: washing-room (washers and iron available), library, study room, TV room, computer room (free Internet access), and gym. 24-hour Reception Service available.

Family StayIn downtown Bilbao or nearby areas connected by subway. This is an excellent option for those students who want to experience family life in Spain, whether they prefer to be moderately or very involved in the household. Housing in single or shared room (depending on availability). Three daily meals and washing of clothes are included. Bed linen and towels are provided. Telephone service for incoming calls.

Orientationand Advising

Pre-Departure InformationOnce their preregistration material is received by CIDE, students will be provided with practical information concerning their trip to Spain, their host city, Bilbao, and the University of Deusto, where they will be taking courses.

Orientation Upon Arrival On the first days of the Program, students will receive plenty of useful information to get around the city and start getting to know some aspects of the Spanish way of life:

• Orientation sessions will cover issues related to the facilities and services offered by the University (library, Internet access, study rooms...), as well other practical issues, such as transportation, health, and housing.

• Guided visits in order to provide students with a first contact with the city center and Bilbao’s surroundings.

Academic AdvisingCIDE Academic Advisors will explain important issues related to courses, credits, class schedule, and academic regulations. Furthermore, they will assist students in their selection of courses and registration on the first weeks of the Program. Throughout the term, the CIDE Academic Advisors will be available for help with academic related issues.

On-site support teamCIDE staff will be available for consultation in case students have trouble in their everyday life in Bilbao, especially when they come up with personal issues they do not wish to talk about openly in a scenario of a student assistance office, but rather in a more confidential atmosphere.

Applicationand Admission

Application ProceduresApplication instructions can be found at the CIDE website (www.cide.deusto.es). Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by a screening committee.

How to Travel to SpainOnce you are accepted in the CIDE Program, you will receive different e-mail messages that will provide you with important information, such as the exact airport where you will be picked up by a Program representative upon your arrival (either the Madrid or Bilbao airport, depending on the Program).

You should purchase your plane ticket as soon as possible in order to make sure you are getting the lowest possible fare.

Passport and VisaIn order to travel to Spain, you need a valid passport. You need to make sure the expiration date of your passport is later than the date of your return.

Students without a European Union passport need to apply for a student visa at the nearest Spanish Consulate in their country. In order to apply for a visa, students need a valid passport.

Getting a visa can take up to three months, so it is extremely important for you to apply for one immediately after you receive a letter from CIDE officially confirming your status as a University of Deusto student.
