Students Raise Money for Flood and Earthquake Victims Melodie Cook’s Discussion Process and Principles class from Siebold University, Japan really took the discussion topic, “Thinking Globally, Acting Globally” to heart. After doing the brainstorming activities in the text, they came up with the idea of holding a flea market as a way of raising money for victims of natural disasters. Then they went one step further--they actually went out and did it. The Nagasaki Shimbun reported that Melodie’s class raised 70,000 Japanese Yen (approximately $700.00 US) for flood victims in Myanmar and earthquake victims in China. The money was donated to the Japanese Red Cross. The authors of Discussion Process and Principles were so impressed that they matched the students’ donation with $700.00 to the Oregon Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Author Charles LeBeau said that Development Director Rebecca Roby was very moved by the story of Melodie’s students. She emphasized how important it is that young people can see that they can make a difference. All too often what we do in class remains academic. As the students at Siebold University proved, we can make a difference. Be part of the solution!
