National Survey on Student Volunteering Landscape Includes barriers to student engagement and seeks to understand the reasons behind why students get involved and dedicate their time to projects and volunteering efforts. Would you prefer volunteering as a part of a large group such as a club or society? Or on your own individually? Would you prefer long-term volunteering projects such as a semester or more? Or one-off events? If there was a particular residence hall allocated for students who wished to do increased levels of volunteering (either structured or non-structured) throughout the year, would you be more or less interested in living within that community on a 1 to 10 scale. 1 being less; 10 being more? The overall mean of 5.11 and a mode of 5. When analysed together and excluding answers that were given by graduate students the mean changes to 6.24 with a mode of 5. Recommendations 1,2,3Go Volunteer! Focus on promoting to students to set and accomplish goals that promote both engagement and professional development University Wide Less frequent events that are one off events centred around themes led by the Students Union and organize the longer term events for individuals wishing to do a longer term commitment. This model would focus around the 1,2,3 GO! Model. Canned food drive with canned food sculpture competitions Cardboard Village to promote homelessness SU Calendar Have a published calendar (poster in addition to the calendar format) that establishes events for the entire year. (or semester) Can be placed around the University (both in the Students Union office and in the Student Lounge) Cambridge Re-modeling of the Student Lounge to provide more friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The addition of a Full-time bar managed by the Students Union to enhance Cosletts functional capabilities. Introduction of a Volunteer Hallway for incoming students who wished to do elevated levels of volunteering that were organized for them or could organize opportunities themselves as a group. Example. Green Hall Green Hall is a residential space for first year students interested in and committed to an environmentally-conscious lifestyle. Green Hall sponsors sustainability themed programs and projects, and provides its residents with the opportunity to collectively practice sustainable living and to make connections with the environmental community. Chelmsford Blood drive centred around a theme. (may be ongoing or one- off) Better Representation of mature students via events aimed at that demographic. Questions
