Term 4 Week 9 - December 14, 2018

This is Holly Robinson, a Year 11 student who has moved to Oberon this year. Holly likes Oberon because it’s pretty and she loves her new house. She enjoys seeing kangaroos and echidnas in the bush when walking her dogs, Asha and Jet. At home Holly spends her time just “chillin”, singing or watching movies or YouTube singers like Katy Perry.

The best thing Holly has done recently is going back to Penrith to attend the Glenmore Park High School Year 10 Formal. It was great to catch up with friends and teachers at her old school.

Holly’s favourite teacher is Ms Kropman because she is lovely. Miss K listens to Holly and makes her laugh and helps with her reading. Holly likes to be on stage which is why Drama, with Miss McTrustry, is her favourite subject.

For Holly the best thing about Oberon High School is making lots of new friends; Eve, Lexi, Peta, Emma, Molly, Phoenix and Tyler just to name a few. Holly likes to go to DJ’s for hot chips and gravy and milkshakes with her friends (something we all enjoy). She also liked meeting Kym, Bailey and Sarah at Long Arm Farm Café. Holly said “I have met some nice people, I am happy in Oberon.”

The principal matters

Presentation Night was fantastic, with a full gymnasium (400 students, staff, family and community). This year we had great sponsorship from the community which enabled us to provide many of the awards with a substantial gift card as an added reward for the hard work of students during 2018.

Presentation Night is the premier night on our calendar and gives us an opportunity to really showcase the talent of our students and the hard work that they put in.

We had a number of invited guests on the night who accepted an invitation to present awards. The positive feedback from these people is particularly pleasing as they echo what we see each day – great students and a caring and committed staff.

Presentation Night was a week earlier than in previous years as we try and avoid the inevitable rush around Christmas time. This provided some logistical issues behind the scenes as we had to collate a great deal of information in deciding award winners. We are looking at continuing the earlier event in 2019.

A big thank you to Mrs Mackay-Galea, Mrs Voerman and Mrs McIntosh for all their hard work in particular. However, a thank you in general to everyone who played a part in the night.

School Security

It is important to remember that we are returning to day 1 of 2019 on the general calendar, however, curriculum wise students will be 6 weeks into their semester one studies.

Term 1 will be 11 weeks rather than the traditional 10 weeks. Easter weekend and Anzac Day fall outside the term and within the first school holidays in April.

The 2019 school year commences for junior students on Wednesday January 30th whilst senior students start the following day Thursday January 31st.

Teachers return on Tuesday January 29th to finish off preparations for the arrival of students.

The timetable will commence on a week B to accommodate an 11 week term.

(#) No staff development day in Term 4 (*) Senior students commence Term 1 on Thursday January 31st

School security is an important issue during holidays as the site is quiet with few people on site day to day. It is essential that the community in general help look after our school as it is a primary asset within the town and an important part of community members past, present and future.

If you see anything unusual or obvious damage to the school during the holiday period, please contact school security on 1300880021. This is a 24/7 hotline, 365 days of the year. If there is a significant issue of an immediate nature (school fire for example) please ring 000.

On Presentation Night I highlighted staff movement for 2019. All of these staff have contributed to our school and I would like to thank them again for their commitment to our students.

Mr Bender is remaining in the local area but will undertake work outside education. He has been a great asset within the PDHPE/Sport and Support areas. I know the students will greatly miss him.

position, however, she may be back in 2020.

Peter Harvey (Bugs) is retiring from his position as GA. Peter has been a fantastic asset to our school and works well beyond his core hours. He has a lot of extra curricular hobbies outside school, hence, he will have plenty to keep himself occupied.

I would like to extend to all families within our school

community best wishes for the holiday break. I hope Christmas is somewhat relaxing, although I know it tends to be hectic for most people. What-ever your plans are for the New Year please stay safe.

I look forward to seeing everyone back at school in 2019 refreshed and ready for another big year.

From the Deputy PrincipalTerm 4 has been a busy term for us at OHS. The Year 10s have been involved in a rigorous transition program and have moved into the Senior College. All of our other students have also rolled over into the next year and have been working hard in their new courses. The incoming Year 7s have just completed a week of transition activities, including Peer Support with Year 10, and have settled in well to their new environment.

The new Benny’s Bucks rewards system has seen a BBQ lunch for the lucky houses – Abercrombie and Werong, and again one recently for Werong who are leading the tally with around 1000 Benny’s Bucks.

The new House Captains were elected and will also be responsible for delivering our new Wellbeing Program that will commence next year. This will run on every alternate Monday to assemblies and it is anticipated that this will enhance belonging and resilience among the student body. The Abercrombie Captains are Orlagh Fitzgerald and Ethan Lovett and the Vice Captains are Tiarna

Boundy and Connor Priddis. The Tuglow Captains are Kiara Maloney and Tyler Colley and the Vice Captains are Lauren Mimenza-Fernandez and

Nathan Voytilla-Borg. The Werong Captains are Molly-Rose Stiff and Phoenix Cooper-Beattie and the Vice Captains are Jade Taggart and Kynan Thompson. I would like to congratulate these students and we are looking forward to working with them in their leadership capacity in 2019.

As part of the Year 10 - Senior College Transition program, on the 14th November we went on a Trees Adventure to Grose River Park in Yarramundi. On arrival at the park we attended a training session with our two instructors. It was here that we suited up in our harness.

There were four levels that went up in height – green, blue, red and black. Most of us started on the blue level, although you couldn’t start on black. There were two levels to each colour. The course was very challenging and some of us got up to the black levels. There were many obstacles along the way, including flying fox, ladders, walk over objects and objects to crawl through.

The experience was to give us team building, resilience and confidence skills. It was a great day. Thank you to Ms Fitz for her organisation of the day, and to Ms McTrustry, Ms Kropman, Mr Jones and Mr Inwood for escorting us on the day.

Orlagh Fitzgerald, Peta McGrath, Emma Schrader.

Please note - due to the nature of the activity no devices were allowed on the course, therefore no photographs were available.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hard working staff at OHS for their time and dedication to all our students. I wish our students a safe and enjoyable holiday and thank all parents and community members who have worked with us in partnership this year to continue to provide opportunities for every student in the school.

Oberon High School is starting to coordinate HSC Disability Provisions for 2019. The Board of Studies has a program to help students with practical support in their Higher School Certificate examinations. This practical support, known as disability provisions, assists students to read examination questions and to write their answer or may include rest breaks and extra time. The use of any provision is not written on the student’s results.

Students may need provisions for:

• a permanent condition, such as diabetes or reading difficulty

• a temporary condition, such as a broken arm, or

• an intermittent condition, such as back pain when sitting for long periods.

At Oberon High School our Leaning and Support Team is currently applying for 2019 HSC Disability Provisions, with the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA), for those students who may be eligible. This application tells NESA which provisions the student is requesting and must include supporting documentation such as a medical report from a doctor or health specialist.

If you have any questions about the 2019 HSC Disability Provisions please contact the Learning Support Coordinator, Rachel Sinclair at Oberon High School.

In line with the rollover to the new school year, Oberon High School has been undergoing some changes within the school’s discipline, wellbeing and positive behaviour for learning (PBL) structures. The PBL team, led by Miss Shannon Marshall, reviewed a lot of the past systems in the school and have decided to re-vamp them.in one way or another.

Part of our re-launch was the introduction of our new school mascot: Benny the bull. Benny was kindly donated to Oberon High School by the local roller derby and will appear throughout all kinds of school events. He is designed to strengthen school spirit and encourage students to engage in the school expectations. With Benny, a new rewards system introduced; Benny’s Bucks. This builds up in the concept of house groups, with rewards going to students once their house achieves a certain amount of bucks – “alone we can do so little,

together we can do so much”. Benny’s Bucks will be handed out by OHS staff when they see a student following one of our four school expectations: respectful, responsible, right to be safe and resilient.

A big part of PBL that has been embraced by the staff at OHS is the restorative practice and method of teaching a student how to improve behavioural choices. We have a new green, orange and red card system that was introduced to the

Oberon community at a parent information session held during the rollover period. If you missed the session and would like to find out more information, there is a community handbook that is available on our school website.

In continuing with the new PBL policy and rewards of Benny’s Bucks, week 9 saw all students who received Benny’s Bucks go into the draw for a free movie ticket. Miss Marshall and Ms Hibbert drew one student’s name from Benny’s Bucks recipients for each house group and the winners were; Abercrombie – Abe Rowe, Tuglow – Michael Mijovic, Werong – Emily Roberts.

These individual rewards follow close on the heels of reward barbecues, which are for each house group as they reach a running total of 600 Benny’s Bucks. The PBL team feel it is important to give students tangible rewards for the positive behaviour in addition to

PBL and Benny The Bull
