SCIENTIFIC ISLAM - BOTANY Contributions of Islam to Modern Science!

Seeking knowledge is obligatory in Islam for every Muslim, man and woman. The main sources of Islam, the Quran and the Sunnah (Prophet Muhammad's traditions), encourage Muslims to seek knowledge and be scholars, since this is the best way for people to know Allah (God), to appreciate His wondrous creations and be thankful for them.

Previously humans did not know that plants too have male and female gender distinctions. Botany states that every plant has a male and female gender. Even the plants that are unisexual have distinct elements of both male and female. “And has sent Down water from the sky.’ With it have We produced Diverse pairs of plants Each separate from the others.”[Al- Qur’aan 20:53]. “And fruit Of every kind He made In pairs, two and two.”[Al- Qur’aan 13:3] Fruit is the end product of reproduction of the superior plants. The stage pre-ceding fruit is the flower, which has male and female organs (stamens and ovules). Once pollen has been carried to the flower, they bear fruit, which in turn matures and frees its seed. All fruits therefore imply the existence of male and female organs; a fact that is mentioned in the Qur’aan. In certain species, fruit can come from non-fertilized flowers (parthenocarpic fruit) e.g. bananas, cer-

tain types of pineapple, fig, orange, vine, etc. They also have definite sexual characteristics. “And of everything We have created pairs.” [Al-Qur’aan 51:49] This refers to things other than

humans, animals, plants and fruits. It may also be referring to a phenomenon like electricity in which the atoms consist of nega-tively – and positively – charged electrons and protons. “Glory to Allah, Who created In pairs all things that The earth produces, as well as Their own (human) kind And (other) things

of which They have no knowledge.”[Al-Qur’aan 36:36] The Qur’aan here says that everything is created in pairs, including things that the humans do not know at present and may discover later.

“The king of the fruits”, mango fruit is one of the most popular, nutritionally rich fruit with unique flavor, fragrance, taste, and heath promoting qualities making it a common ingredient in new functional foods often called “super fruits”. Mango fruit is rich in pre-biotic dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and poly-phenolic flavonoid antioxidant compounds. Accord-ing to new research study, mango fruit has been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers. Several trial studies suggest that polyphe-nolic anti-oxidant compounds in mango are known to offer protection against breast and colon cancers. Mango fruit is an excel-lent source of Vitamin-A and flavonoids like beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin. 100 g of fresh fruit provides 765 mg or 25% of recommended daily levels

of vitamin A. Together; these compounds are known to have antioxidant properties and are essential for vision. Vitamin A is also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in carotenes is known to protect body from lung and oral cavity cancers. Fresh mango is a very rich source of potassium. Potassium is an important compo-nent of cell and body fluids that

helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. It is also a very good source of vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin-C and vitamin-E. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen free radicals. Vitamin B-6 or pyridoxine is required for GABA hor-mone production in the brain. It also con-trols homocystiene levels in the blood, which may otherwise be harmful to blood vessels resulting in CAD and stroke. Copper is a co-factor for many vital enzymes, in-cluding cytochrome c-oxidase and superox-ide dismutase (other minerals function as co-factors for this enzyme are manganese and zinc). Copper is also required for the production of red blood cells. Mango peels are also rich in phytonutrients, such as the pigment antioxidants like carotenoids and polyphenols.

What non-sense yar!

First guy (proudly):

"My wife's an angel!"

Second guy: "You're

lucky, mine's still

alive."

Wife: (standing in front of mirror) I am old,f at, wrinkled and no longer pretty. Will you

still give me a compliment? Husband: Your eyesight is still excellent !

The Prophet Muhammad

(PBBUH) said, "The hearts are in the fingers of the Merci-ful One, He turns them as He wishes." (Muslim and Ahmad)

It is essential for us, as Muslims, to know and un-derstand the workings and composition of our

hearts. In that, if our hearts are corrupt; if our inten-tions are corrupt, such deceit will follow in our actions. Similarly, if our hearts and intentions are pure, our actions are sure to be of purity. For how will a fruit tree bare fragrant and delicious fruit if it's roots, un-derground, have decayed?

The thought of taking a break from egotism, forgetting about any worries, or any plans for

the next week or chores that might be waiting and

focusing only on purifying and elucidating intentions regard-ing every single act we could be upto seems simultaneously frightening and refreshing. It feels as if we have taken a deep breath and made a promise to strive to ensure every one of our intentions will not be shad-

owed by a worldly desire or gain; to make sure all we do is for our Creator, irrevocably. For He controls our heart and our heart belongs only to Him. Accepting that each of our deeds is for Allah (S.W.T) is known as Tawakkul or Reliance on Allah

The Messenger of Allah, (PBBUH) said, "How wonderful it is for a believer that he always

ends up with goodness: If he suffers and remains steadfast, it is rewarding; if good things happen and he thanks Allah, that is also rewarding." (Muslim)

The concept of tawakkul hand in hand with the concept of Sabr and Shukr, patience

and thankfulness, leaves to the soul content-ment. What worry is there to further consume oneself with, if the comprehension of reliance

upon Allah (S.W.T) is constantly invigorated in one's mind? Knowing that the feeling of grief, of frustra-tion, of anxiousness, of pain is not an unbearable burden, knowing that it Allah's (S.W.T) Will for us to feel such emotions because He has created us in such a way. We must not forget our significance in this world.

Al- Mustaurad bin Shaddad (R.A) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (upon him be

blessings and peace) saying, 'By Allah, (the luxuries of) this world in comparison to the hereafter is nothing but as though one of you dipped his finger in the sea. So ponder how much (of sea water), the finger returns with'. (Muslim)

It is elemental to continuously remind ourselves of our purpose and our duty of reliance and thank-

fulness to Allah (S.W.T), so that in doing so, our inten-tions are authentic. Let the hearts be pure.

RELIANCE, PATIENCE AND THANKFULNESS By Muhammad Sheraz Alam

“How wonderful it is for a believer that he always ends up with good-

ness: If he suffers and remains steadfast, it is rewarding; if good

things happen and he thanks Allah, that is also rewarding.

(HADITH: MUSLIM]

According to new research study, mango fruit has been found to protect against colon, breast,

leukemia and prostate cancers.

C uring even the deadliest of diseases has been made possible with the aid of medical science and fast grow-ing technology. Be it the breathing trouble asthma or

dangerous diseases, Exercise Physiologist have been work-ing on its remedies for centuries. Hyperbaric oxygen ther-apy and hypobaric chambers are one of them. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a mode or way of supplying pure and safe oxygen to a patient inside it by keeping the pressure of the entire oxygen chamber at a higher level compared to the normal atmospheric pressure. Clinical use of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy had begun safely from 1930.

N ormally, we breathe in atmospheric air that contains 21% oxygen that is sufficient to sustain lives on earth but people often look out for hyperbaric treatment

option when they tend to suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, gas embolism, gangrene, decompression sick-ness, burn tissues, crush injuries, autism, cerebral palsy and stroke. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy accelerates the activity of white blood cells and boasts immunity system but it requires great precaution and expertise. Improper practic-ing of hyperbaric oxygen therapy may lead to unavoidable and severe dangers. A hypobaric chamber used during aerospace or high altitude training to simulate the effects of high altitude on the human body especially hypoxia (low oxygen) and hypobaric (low ambient air pressure). Some

chambers also control for temperature and relative humid-ity. The principal of hypobaric therapy is “live high train low’ When the human body is exposed to hypoxia (oxygen reduced environments), it struggles to produce required amounts of energy with less available oxygen.

T his struggle triggers the onset of a range of physiologi-cal adaptations geared towards enhancing the effi-ciency of the body's respiratory, cardiovascular and

oxygen utilization. Hypobaric therapy helps in improving speed, endurance, strength, power and energy level in athletes and normal adults.

Thatta (Thatto in local language) is a historical and important city of the Sind Province of Pakistan. The city lies some 100 kilometers east of the Karachi metropolis on the National Highway. With River Indus and the Arabian Sea coast to its west, Thatta was once an important and thriving city and a centre of the then newly thriving religion of Islam. From the 14th century four Muslim dynasties ruled Sind from Thatta, but in 1739 the capital was moved elsewhere and with it Thatta declined. Thatta has a very rich heritage of Muslim architecture during the era of the 16th and 17th century. Although Thatta is known for its history which dates back to some 2000 years, it is also known for the Shah Jahan Mosque - a masterpiece of Mughal construction. This mosque was built by Mir Abdullah on the orders of Mogul emperor Shah Jahan in 1647 A.D. It is said that Shah Jahan built this mosque as a gesture of gratitude to the people of Thatta for sheltering him during his youth after his father, Emperor Jahangir banished him from Delhi. Architecturally unique, Shah Jehan mosque is the first mosque in this region to be constructed according to the principals of Mughal courtyard architecture. As per some Persian inscriptions, the foundation of the mosque were laid in 1644 and mosque was completed in 1647. The floor was paved with stone in 1657.The mosque is a superb example of crafty tile work. Its 93 domes and 33 arches with varying sizes add to their architectural beauty. The

domes have been exquisitely laid in a mosaic of radiating blue and white tiles. Its blue tiles and mosaic work are alluring. Red brick is utilized rather than the more commonly seen pink sandstone and marble associated with Mughal buildings. The main entrance of the mosque has a central domed chamber. The mosque has an open central courtyard of about 15,900 square

feet. Arcades of red brick arches highlighted with bands of white surround the courtyard. The main entrance is in the eastern portion and the secon-dary entrances are contained in the north and south portion. The prayer hall has three bays on either side of the central meh-rab chamber. Each bay is covered by a low dome, which adds up to 93 domes. The proportion of the aisle to the low domes enables an acoustic range that in effect

allows the prayers read in front of the mihrab to be heard in all parts of the mosque. The mosque is spread over an area of 51,850 square feet. Unlike other mosques, Shah Jahan Mosque has no minarets. In-stead of the typical three domes, there is only one main dome in the prayer hall. The ablution pond is not located in the center of the courtyard. Instead, it is in a square courtyard located within the eastern portion of the mosque. The ablution courtyard could be access from an arched opening in the domed entrance chamber but now is accessible only from the aisle of the eastern portion. The mosque is combination of Turkish and local artwork, which is profusely used on tile work in the ceiling decoration of semi domed

and domed chambers; as well as in the fillings of interlaced arches. It would not be wrong to call this mosque as the mosque of domes and arches as one can see a series of lined arches while standing in any one corner. Each arch has a small atop with beautiful mosaic and tile work. In fact no Mogul period mosque is like the Shah Jahan mosque at Thatta, since the Mogul architects digressed from their typical architecture and designed this mosque totally differ-ent from those built in Lahore and Delhi in the same period. This is what makes this mosque unique from the rest and worth visiting - and admiring.

HYPER/HYPOBARIC CHAMBER THERAPY

Medical field is the world’s most virtuous profes-sion. What else can be more valuable and surpassing than to save someone from suffering, to limit someone’s disabili-ties and to return someone his breathes, giving him and people associ-ated with him a new stream of life. Medical is the profession or field that is more than worthwhile. How sound it hears that you saved someone’s fa-ther, someone’s husband or someone’s son, how hearty it is to get bundles of prayers and how vi-brant feeling you have of being a savior.

Medical field has diversity of profes-sions including physicians for

pharmacological treatment, surgeons for surgical procedures, dentists for dentistry, physiotherapist for disability management and rehabilitation and psychologists for psychiatric treatment and psycho-logical counseling. Each medical profession has further vast fields of specializations that made specialized professionals more proficient in their fields. It would be unfair not to acknowledge medi-cal assistants, nurses and technicians for having their big part in medical field.

Success in medical profession lies in humbleness, honesty, dedica-

tion and above all gratitude to Allah Almighty who gave you enough apprehension and vigor to serve humanity. May Allah Bless Us All As Medical Profes-sionals!

AN IN-LINE EXPERIENCE - OFF THE SHORE By Asbar Javaid, Head of FPRMC , Student Focus

The idea of Summer Students Burst was proposed on 16th may 2012 in 1st members’ meeting of Student Focus team. Original idea was to arrange an awareness seminar but majority of the members suggested that a concert or a short video competition should also be included in the event, So we thought a concert would be great. We started working on the feasibility report of the event and I personally thought that it was impossible to arrange an event on such a short notice. It was 22nd of May when we practically started to work and positive response from our whole class generated more and more enthusiasm in us, on the other hand, the response from other classes was a bit demoralizing. The main hurdle was to get permission from our own department in which Dr. Muhammad Mohsin (General Secretary PPTA Punjab) helped us and not only he guided us but he also played a key role in the permission procedure. Once we got the permission, we thought we are good to go but just after a day we realized that there is a huge load of work that needs to be done, last week was the toughest, had to arrange every-thing and along with that we had to visit different colleges to promote the event and that’s not the end, the event day, 9th June, was also our Hostel Allotment day so we had to go for allotment at 5pm and there was a lot of mismanagement but somehow we started the seminar and after that things got better with time. In the end, It was a good gathering and I won’t say it was perfect and we are the best but for starters like us, it was an experience of a lifetime.

Sum mer Student Burst-Seminar and Concert. First ever

event of its kind for the students, by the students arranged at Punjabi Cultural Complex, Qadafi Stadium Lahore on 9th June 2012. The event was organized by Student Focus team in order to promote Physical Therapy Awareness and allow students to interact at maximum with positivity of their ideas and innovation. Since the event was called in Lahore so the institute that participated were mainly from the same city. Special arrivals were from Sargodha and Faisalabad.

Whe n the event was planned the situation just seemed as if it

was all impossible but Alhamdulillah the response was overwhelming when we forwarded the idea to the students and professionals. What Student Focus Team was expecting was hardly 150-175 atten-dees/participants but Student focus team was highly overwhelmed when 250 Regis-trations reached by 6th of June 2012 - a day before the closing of registrations i.e.7th June 2012. Almost by 9th of June 2012 the number just crossed 275.In a short duration of 7-8 days such a huge number of registrations impressed upon the team to put in their each and every inch of effort to make this idea a reality.

The rehearsals of the event were commenced a day before the

happening i.e on 8th of June 2012 in Audi-torium Punjabi Cultural Complex Lahore from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The Organizers, Coordinators and Volunteers worked so whole heartedly that it seemed everybody owned the name STUDENT FOCUS.

On the event the program was started with the Gracious

Name of Allah Subhana-Wata'ala and embraced blessing through Naat-e-Nabi(S.A.W) then Editor In-Chief uttered a welcome note. The National Anthem was played honored with the standing ova-tions. The Special video of History of Physi-cal Therapy as profession in the world and its implantation credits in Pakistan was played on big screen. All the segments went hand in hand with the animation, made by the Editor In-Chief, displayed over projector screen.

Also there was a special presenta-tion on the introduction of Student Focus by Muhammad Sheraz Alam (Editor In-Chief of Student Focus - Student)

The student guests were highly cooperative and mannered

and showed that their profession and image of student community really mat-ters to them. The devotion of Student Focus team was evident from the level of organization they maintained. The pro-gram was sponsored by Pakistan Physical therapy Association and Voltral Emulgel Novartis. The stalls of edibles were also arranged by students of FMH and LMDC including those of Gol Gappas and Dahi Bhaleys and some Bakery items. Bottles were served to the participants from Stu-dent Focus Team. The volunteers of all institutes worked very well but special mention is of FMH who just devoted too much of their time and effort of this event.

Mem oir was awarded to Stu-dent Focus Team from

Patron in-Chief Student focus. A special memoir was presented by Student Focus Team to Patron In-Chief Student Focus. An Exclusive Award was presented to Editor In-Chief Student Focus Muhammad Sheraz Alam by President PPTA Syed Imtiaz Hus-sain for designing the logo of PPTA. The musical performances in the concert were that of Xain Butt, Chapter X, Khizer Moeed, Taha and Awais Rapstars, and Dance performance by a student - Abdul-lah Rashed from SAHS Lahore. The audi-ence just drowned into the rocking num-bers and instrumental items. The guitar and drums took breath with every beat and note. Everybody enjoyed a lot and left with pleasant memories.

Laughter involves the entire physiology of the body. When researching its effects, lab experi-mentation has been done on the respira-

tory system, the cardiovascular system, the muscular system, the central nerv-ous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system: • Laughter releases endorphins, the body's natural painkiller, and so is a pleasant act, producing a general feeling of well-being. However, more than this, laughter has been shown to considerably benefit one's health and even battle disease. Laughter brings about an increase in the number and activity level of natural killer cells that attack cells infected by virus and some types of cancer and tumor cells. This possibility of laugh-ter's ability to fight tumorous cells has added an exciting new, and controversial area of research to cancer • The body also experiences a boost in immune function by the elevated levels of activated T cells (T lymphocytes), and an increase in the antibody, IgA (immunoglobulin A), which fights upper respiratory tract insults and infections • Disease-fighting proteins increase in gamma interferon, a blood chemical that transmits messages in the nervous system and stimulates the immune system. An increase in IgB

(immunoglobulin B) brings defense against the entry of infec-tious organisms through the respiratory tract • In general, laughter raises your resistance against infections by increasing the concentration of circulating antibodies in the blood stream and increasing the concentration of circulating white blood cells in the immune reaction to fight foreign pro-teins • In addition to all of this, laughter is simply a good cardio workout, increasing heart activity, and thus stimulating circula-tion. After the laughter subsides, the cardiovascular system goes into a state of relaxation. "The human race has only one really effective weapon, and that's laughter. The moment it arises, all our hardness's yield, all our irritations and resentments slip away, and a sunny spirit takes their place." This, said by Mark Twain is what, as of present, we can be certain to assert about the effects of laugh-ter on the body. It is clinically believed that when used in addition to conventional care, laughter can reduce pain and aid and speed the healing process. It has been shown that laughter has the ability to enhance conventional treatments, but not replace them. In many studies, we have seen laughter to have miraculous effects, such as relieving stress, and increasing threshold for pain. Laughter is so miraculous partially because it works as a prescription drug, but is entirely natural and has no negative side effects.

PAIN IN FIROMYALGIA IS DUE TO BRAIN MOLECULES Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System have found a key linkage between pain and a specific brain molecule, a discovery that lends new insight into fibromyalgia, an often-baffling chronic pain condition. In patients with fibromyalgia, researchers found, pain decreased when levels of the brain molecule called glutamate went down. The results of this study, which appears in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism, could be useful to researchers looking for new drugs that treat fibromyalgia .

NEW HORIZONS IN MEDICAL RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY

A Boise State University study has shed new light on how proteins interact, or bind, with one another in tissues. The new information could help scientists with tissue engineering and strengthening efforts to treat cartilage damage and degeneration by diseases such as os-teoarthritis. The biologists suggest that a protein called collagen XI interacts with specific pro-teins in the part of the tissue that provides structural support to the cell. Collagen XI is one of the few proteins that is known to prevent arthritis, and when it is mutated or absent, the indi-vidual will develop arthritis early in life.

EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON BRAIN AND MEMORY Exercise clears the mind. It gets the blood pumping and more oxygen is delivered to the brain. The effects of exercise are different on memory as well as on the brain, depending on whether the exerciser is an adolescent or an adult. A gene has been identified which seems to mediate the degree to which exercise has a beneficial effect. This has implications for the potential use of exercise as an intervention for mental illness. The genes code for the BDGF. Brain Derived Growth Factors have been found to enhance the brain growth and memory.

Older adults who drank coffee -- caffeinated or decaffeinated -- had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee, according a study by researchers from the Na-tional Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP. Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption .

Dr. Fareeha Shah is a known physiotherapist. Currently she serving is at Institute of Allied Sciences, Fatima Memorial Hospital Lahore. She graduated from Simmons College Boston USA. Student focus representatives Safa Moeed and Syeda Anoshia Rizvi joined Dr. Fariha Shah in her office and the con-versation started.

Q1. How are you?

I am fine Alhamdulillah.

Q2. For what duration have you been in US and why did

you come to Pakistan?

I lived there for 17 years then I came to Pakistan because of my

husband

Q4. How did you come to this profession? What

prompted you to pursue your career in physiotherapy?

I was inspired by the wondrous treatment and recovery of my

neighbor through Physical therapy in USA.

Q6. What is the best thing about physiotherapy?

Elimination of pain and dysfunction; promotion of active inde-

pendent lifestyle and functional level of every patient.

Q7. Private practice of government house ship, which is

better?

Private Practice, due to competitive nature of job.

Q8. Teacher, administrator or clinician, at which post do

you enjoy working the most?

It’s a tie between teacher and clinician. I mean both.

Q9. Taking into consideration your hectic schedule, how

do you cope and allocate time for your social life?

That is a big challenge being a mother, wife, daughter in-law,

clinician and as a teacher very tough. Credit goes to my family

and friends for support.

Q10. What are the common problems that physiothera-

pists are facing in our country? What measures do you

suggest?

The biggest common problem is that we think of ourselves first

and not the profession. We can overcome by improving learning

and promoting the devotion.

Q11. 5 traits that a successful physiotherapist needs?

Among these which one is your strongest trait?

To be knowledgeable, dedicated, disciplined, cooperative and

sincere. I think I have all 5.

Q12. Do you think that female physiotherapists face

more difficulties as compared to male physiotherapists?

Its because of tradition of male domination in our society. Only

skilled practice and knowledge can help.

Q13. What services you think a physiotherapist can

provide in case of emergencies?

From First aid to rehabilitation a physiotherapist can provide

emergency care except in the red flag signs.

Q14. Since its formation, PPTA has been in dormancy as

happened again after last physiotherapy rally and DPT

course approval, for how long will its silence lasts?

PPTA is in its infancy, a lot of work needs to be done by the office

bearers as well as the members.

Q15. House jobs have been proposed in the HEC syllabus

but still no firm announcement to date has been heard,

what PPTA is doing for that?

PPTA is working for the approval of house jobs, service structure

and other rights of physiotherapists. It all needs some time.

Q16. PPTA has mission statement of its academic sup-

port for physiotherapy institutions yet none of them

has any permanent faculty, what do you say?

I would say where PPTA should work hard there all institutions

must also vocalize their problems.

Q17. What is the progress of

Physiotherapy Council for which

rally was arranged?

The progress is very slow unfortu-

nately because something is stuck

somewhere at the ministry level.

Q18. How would you compare

Health care system of America

and Pakistan?

America is the ideal proto-

type of many fields is it

engineering, law or medical.

Comparison is actually

unfair.

Q19. Do you think that

our curriculum needs up

gradation? Why our

curriculum does not match the international standards?

The DPT curriculum approved by HEC meets that gap with a wider

scope of knowledge InshaAllah.

Q20. Your advice to those physiotherapy students who

are planning to go abroad for higher education?

Study hard. Become true learners and improve manual skills,

examination, evaluation and assessment and learn documenta-

tion.

Q21. Would you recommend your daughter to opt for

this profession or not?

Of course 100 percent! If she wishes to go in physical therapy,

yes!

Q22. Have you felt any regrets, at any stage of your life

regarding the choice of this profession?

Right now I have no regrets. Alhamdulillah!
