NORWOOD FLY TIPPING Local Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower has asked the city council what it plans to do about fly-tipping in Norwood Lane following a recent incident in which dumped rubbish went up in smoke.

Darren said: “If you live in or around the Manor Drive area of

Gunthorpe you’ll no doubt have seen or heard about the recent fire that occurred in Norwood Lane after fly-tipped items caught fire.

“The issue of fly-tipping along this stretch of road is not new. In fact it made the headlines in a national newspaper way back in 2011.

“I have now requested an update from senior officers at the city council as to what action they have taken to address this issue and what the costs have been.

“I have also contacted Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service which ended up dealing with this latest incident. I have asked whether it has done a post incident report or an assessment of the area. It could then share this with the city council to offer advice on how to improve this problematic spot.”

Borrowdale needs surface work Local Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower has raised concerns about the poor state of the road surface in Borrowdale Close.

Darren said: “The entrance road markings are almost worn away, there are potholes in the road the size of my foot and there are weeds making their way through the cracks and adding to the problem.

“I cannot remember the last time this road received some attention. I have asked the council if there are any plans to address the problems.”

Need a dog bin? Local Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower is asking residents to identify places that need new bins for dog waste.

Darren said: “I’m keen to ensure that we have enough bins in the Gunthorpe area, for both general and dog waste, to help keep the area free from litter.

“We have had new bins in places like the footpath that run alongside Swale Avenue, the John Clare recreation ground and the footpath behind Ambleside Gardens.

“But I’m sure that there must be other locations that would benefit from new bins. If you have suggestions for good places to put them, please get in touch.”

NEW PUB SET TO GET COUNCIL APPROVAL?

A proposed new 'micro pub' in a shop unit on Storrington Way has been approved by the city council’s Planning and Environmental Protection Committee.

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Andrew Bond, who is a member of the committee, raised concerns about how it will affect parents and children travelling home from the nearby school during the micro pub’s opening times. He also asked about the effect it would have on existing local pubs and - most importantly - the impact on local residents.

There were a considerable number of complaints by residents who would not like another pub in the area.

To reduce possible problems caused by large numbers of people standing outside the front of the pub, perhaps smoking or just having a chat, the council says that there must be a smoking area at the back of the premises.

Despite the committee’s approval the plans must also be supported by the council’s licensing committee at a meeting on 13 October.

Andrew Bond said: “This committee will look at the issues I previously mentioned such as the opening times, chairs outside the front and whether alcoholic drinks should be allowed outside.

“So the proposal still may not go ahead. Everyone still has an opportunity to voice their opinions.

“Please contact me if you have concerns. I would particularly like to hear from people in the flats above the premises.”

So – what is a ‘micro pub’? Andrew Bond explains:

There is a new trend of 'micro pubs' being built across the country. They tend to accommodate less than 20 people at one time and serve traditional and locally produced beers and ales along with crisps and other pub snacks.

They do not usually play loud music – but this particular micro pub is looking into having live music occasionally.

The Micro Pub Association believes that factors such as the ones mentioned above distinguish a micro pub from traditional pubs such as the nearby Three Horseshoes in Werrington.
