Rikki Ragoonanan Wins

Rikki Ragoonanan wins Tri-State at Sandcastle Billiards’ Edison, NJ B/D 9 – Ball event June 19, 2010. In route to victory, Rikki defeated: Ken DeCuire 7 – 4, Andrew Cleary 9 – 6, Serrafin Serrano 7 – 6, Troy Deocharran 8 – 6; Pat DiBuono 7 – 6 to reach the Hot Seat. In the meantime Raphael DaBreo, with a 7 win/ 2 loss record, was climbing his way back through the losers side defeating Pat DiBuono 7 – 5 to play in the Finals against Rikki. In an effort to have a pool league that runs through the summer months, Q-Spot and Crown Cues came up with a different idea. They started a "Fun League" that is more about helping the new or returning player learn the game with today's rules, while giving the seasoned player the opportunity to share his skills and continue

competing through the off-months. It wasn't long before Renee' La Viness, of Crown Cues, assumed the role of league coordinator. According to Renee', "The hardest part was changing our focus from highly competitive to an educational mode and retaining our normal playing level. It was instinctive to play down, in order to let the other guy get a few shots at the table. After a couple of weeks of the newer players getting the idea, the seasoned players returned to their skill levels and helped the new players play UP, instead. This league allows coaching within limits and even a player from the opposing team may assist the player at the table." After about 3 months, the Fun League's first season ended on July 22nd with a pizza party and a free tournament. Trophy plaques were awarded to the top two teams and top three players. The 1st Place Team was Crown Cuesaders, followed closely by Tulsa Thunder. The top player was Barry Curtius, with Gene La Viness taking 2nd and Melvin Cade in 3rd. Christian Young won the free tournament, which was a race to 2 on both sides. He mastered his way through the winner's side and beat Milton Cade for the win. It was assumed that the league would resume next summer, when needed once again. However, due to popular demand, the next season will begin on Tuesday, August 17th and new teams are signing up, now. Teams require 3

players (ages 12 and up) and matches are played from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. So, if you're a new player who wants a little help, or a returning player after raising a family or some other long term absence, or a seasoned player who wants to help out, head on down to the Family Q-Spot and sign up for the next season of the Fun League! The Little Wooden Shed

On July 10th, while Shane Van Boening was winning his way to the top of the Gem City Classic at the Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta, GA, several of the finest cue and case makers, as well as some high end collectibles and fine collections were being displayed in the Scorpion Room, where the Southern Cue & Case Show was taking place.The big event of the day was the induction of Leonard Bludworth into the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame, which was streamed live to the world. In the 1970’s, Leonard began repairing cues and he started building them in the 1980’s. Over the years, he developed and sold the Bludworth Ball Cleaner, as well

as wood lathes he had converted into reliable cue repair machines and many other mechanical and CNC machines for cue building. Leonard was

also a master pool table mechanic and equipment coordinator for the men’s pro tour and the senior tour for many years. He was probably the first cuemaker to ever sell a cue for $100,000. In 1992, he founded the American Cuemakers Association. Leonard practically created the role of cue repairman and the traveling pro shop. In honor of all he has done for cue sports over the years, he has truly earned this prestigious position. Congratulations, Leonard Bludworth!

June 26 was the latest installment of the Flamingo Billiards Tour held at Ultimate Billiards in Fort Pierce, Florida. With 5 new players, the field reached the highest of the season with 21 participants and proved to be more competitive than ever bringing about another new member to the 2010 winners’ circle. The final stage was set and pitted veteran players, Mitchell versus Caukin. Caukin was looking for her second consecutive win of the season, while Mitchell was looking for her first tour title since last year. Both players started out tentative, making unforced errors early on. The match stayed even until the score reached 2-2. Mitchell began to slowly pull away by capitalizing on Caukin’s misses. Up 4-2, Mitchell returned the favor by missing a key shot, allowing Caukin to pull within one. The next two games saw creative play between both players on the

6-ball, until Mitchell gained the edge in both to make it and run out to reach the hill first. Caukin gained the edge in the next game

and began her run until missing a crucial 6-ball allowing Mitchell a chance to close the match. Mitchell strategically pocketed balls but would overrun shape, leaving a difficult 9-ball, which she missed. Caukin pocketed it to put

the score at 6-4. In the next game, again Mitchell had a chance to finish the match, but a surprising scratch on the 8, allowed Caukin

to pull within one. Caukin was set to break for a chance to tie the match. She broke and watched the 9-ball fly into the side pocket but unfortunately continued looking on as the cue ball followed it. Mitchell took a deep breath

and with ball in hand decided she could no longer make unforced errors and meticulously ran out the rack to win her 1st event this season. We've all been in positions where it was almost impossible to reach the shot. Usually we should use the mechanical bridge for those shots, but most players would rather invent new techniques than use the rake. Here are a few novel techniques for shooting those tough-to-get-to shots. The Blind Shot. Suppose the object ball is very near the middle of the end rail and the cue ball is straight out from it. You want to come off the side of the ball and take the cue ball up the table for a safe. Sight while standing at the other end of the table, and place the cue stick on the table along the line of the shot. Move to the side of the table, reach out over the table and pick up the cue stick being very careful not to move the butt sideways, and form a normal bridge. Now shoot "side-arm." I first saw this technique used by the great carom champion Raymond Ceulemans. Under some rule sets, you have to be careful to not let go completely of the stick while it is on the table as that would be a foul. This technique is plenty accurate enough for some combinations out of rack. The Belly Stab. Same position, but you just need to hit the ball to the cushion for a safety. If the cue ball is close to the object ball, this is a very hard shot to get the right speed with a bridge if your depth perception is not perfect. Stand by the object ball, lay your stick out on the table pointed back at you, grab the shaft with both hands, and drag the stick towards you into the cue ball. Not pretty, but pretty effective. This is usually considered a legal shot. The Light Lift. Same position, but the object ball is very close to the cushion and the cue ball is close to the object ball. You want to just bump the object ball to the cushion and leave the same shot or worse. Lay your stick on the table as in the Belly Stab, but bring the tip under the edge of the cue ball. Pull the shaft straight up, grazing the edge of the cue ball which will very softly nudge the object ball to the cushion. Unfortunately, this stroke technique is illegal according to the World Standardised Rules as it is not made by a forward motion of the stick. The Cross-Town Bridge. Same position but move the cue ball a foot away from the object ball and put a cluster of balls just a little further out to prevent the Blind Shot technique. The orthodox way to handle this shot is by stacking mechanical bridges, but it's often hard enough to find a single bridge, let alone two or three. And shooting from the far end of the table is begging to move a ball or two due to low visibility. Place the mechanical bridge across the width of the table with head up on one side cushion and the handle on the other. Now you have a place in the air to rest your bridge hand. You may need to use the Blind Shot technique for aiming. I think this use of the bridge while not perfectly standard is still legal. The Briesath Bump. Here is a technique I saw demonstrated by Jerry Briesath, a master instructor from Wisconsin. Let's suppose you have both object ball and cue ball along the side rail and you need to draw the cue ball back to the other end of the table. The shot would be easy except for the fact that it's on the wrong side of the table, and you can't shoot at all off-handed. Jerry makes this shot by placing his stick on the table along the correct line, pinching under the stick with his bridge hand at about the joint to raise the tip up just a little, and jamming the heel of his hand into the bumper to drive the stick into the ball. The cue ball zips back -- darndest thing you ever saw. It's also food for thought for those who believe a special stroke is needed for draw. It’s that time of the year again! As the leaves turn, the kids return to school and the fall pool league season begins. Do you have any plans for a better season this year? Enjoy this easy checklist and have a fun pool season!

Set a GoalOne great thing about league is that someone else is keeping the stats for you. Now would be an ideal time to set some tangible, measurable goals. Maybe you’d like to move up by one handicap. Maybe you want a higher win percentage. Whatever your objective is, keep your eye on the target and have a plan of attack.Kids come home with progress reports that show their development. These stats may indicate their areas for improvement. Granted, the league stats won’t identify the shots you miss most often or how many times you broke dry, but most will show ERO’s (Earned Run-Outs) and win-loss percentages. Use these stats to track your progress throughout the league season.

Keep it SimpleChoose one new shot or exercise to focus on. This should be something that allows you to target a specific weakness in your game. Perhaps you’re struggling with safeties or you have a phobia of inside english. If you have trouble identifying your weaknesses, ask a teammate for help. Try to dedicate at least 10 hours to each new drill before moving to the next one. Track your progress as you go along. Continuing EducationPick up a book, watch some videos, surf the internet, or simply read through the rest of this publication. There are so many great resources out there to help you get started. Many of them won’t even cost you a dime! If you need to be pointed in the right direction, let me know.

Review and RepeatNow remember, even though you’re using the league stats, your goals should be performance based and not outcome based. When you do your best and work to improve your weaknesses, the results will follow. If all your opponents break and run out on you in league, the outcome was negative but that was not a reflection of your performance.Take some time to review your stats from previous seasons and periodically check on your standings in the current season. During the LIVE Streaming we met an amazing amount of people with heart, pride and a love for this game. Each photo has its own unique story from Nicole who is from South Africa, to a team from Minnesota who won its 3rd Master Team title in a row. A gentleman from Portugal who’s countrymen supported him and when the LIVE Streaming started, added over 300 viewers from Portugal to watch him double dip his opponent. In the Women’s Masters Chrissy’s brother Andy, sat in to commentate during her team’s victory. To the Sportsmen’s Champion Team who’s hometown bar was watching them LIVE, with Roger’s win over the gengleman who beat him in the finals last year. We were priviledged to have met, filmed and shared a moment with these pool players.I’d like to take this time to explain why OTBnTV was not on all 9 days of the Championship. The unions at the Riviera had a policy in place that any LIVE Streaming had to be shadowed by a union worker at a cost of $70 per hour. This worker did absolutely nothing to help with the live streaming, mostly sat and did nothing, read

a book, or disappeared. The 30th Annual Championship seemed not to have as many players as the previous two years. In all the singles there were 3,214 players and 557 teams, most teams had 5 players times the number of teams comes to 2,785 (these numbers were taken from the VNEA website and may vary). But all in all it is definitely the league players Super Bowl to come to Las Vegas and play for a National Championship. OTBnTV has been lucky enough to be able to witness the level of competition and be priviledged to be able to bring that to you our audience. As with each of the six National Championships produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – and this year welcoming its new league and championship sponsor: Lucasi Hybrid Cues – the annual spectacle at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, June 6-12, showcased formats that encouraged many different winners…in many different formats…for many different skill levels…along with multi-titlists in the higher-skilled divisions. Multi-titlists included the likes of: Debra Aarens (Las Vegas, NV) who anchored the Women’s Open 8-Ball Team Champion “Smokin’ 8s,” the same Women’s Open 9-Ball Team runner-ups, and placed as the Women’s 9-Ball Singles runner-up; Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) who won the Men’s 9-Ball Singles crown and shared top honors as well with his Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles partner, Jessica Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) [Jessica also anchored the champion Women’s Open 9-Ball team “Which Witch Is Which” as well]; Christy Goldsmith (Henderson, NV) who won the Women’s Speed Pool Challenge, placed 2nd in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles and 2nd again on Vegas’s “I Had A Plan” team in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Teams; Beth Fondell (Owatonna, MN) who won the coveted Women’s Master 8-Ball Singles crown and placed runner-up with partner and Men’s Speed Pool Champion, Jerrod Frideres in the Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles category; Edward Mataya who was runner-up in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles and anchored both the repeating champion “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 9-Ball team from Tacoma, WA and the same “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 8-Ball Team 3rd-place finisher; and

Championships also highlighted its share of first-time national champions: Standard player Kassandra Bein (Virginia Beach, VA) outdistancing some much stronger players to take the handicapped Women’s 9-Ball Singles title; Ray Skenandore (Las Vegas, NV) who has improved in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles field every year until finally claiming the title in 2010; Jeff Heath (Reno, NV) who has always threatened but never claimed the Men’s Master 8-Ball Singles title until this year; York Haven, PA’s Christine Chamberlain in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles; Robert White (Conception Bay South, NF) who

probably traveled the farthest to take down a title – that of the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles; Pat Mowdy (Longview, WA) who improved on his runner-up

performance in 2008 to take down the 2010 crown in the Men’s Senior 8-Ball Singles division; Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) who claimed the top award in her rookie year in the Women’s Senior 8-Ball Singles; and Milton Strack (Monticello, IL) who – after thirty years of competing in various national championships in Vegas - finally claimed a national championship trophy for his case against a very formidable Super Senior 8-Ball Singles field. In the Open Scotch Doubles contest, Lexington, Kentucky’s Samantha Patton teamed up with her league mate, 2009 Super Senior 8-Ball Singles champ Madison Adkins, to claim the top spot; and Madison went on to help his “American Legion Post # 313” (KY) team to win the Open

8-Ball Team title after knocking on that door for the previous five years. Lexington, Kentucky’s other powerhouse team, “Mike’s Team/Silver Cue,” almost brought another national trophy home with a runner-up performance in the Open 9-Ball Team division won by defending champs, Malarkey’s of Tacoma, WA. Las Vegas struck again, with the “Tuesday – Rich” team capturing top honors in the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Team division, while Texas claimed honors thanks to the performance of team “Flawless” in the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Team class. BROOMFIELD, Colo., July 27, 2010 — Francisco Bustamante, one of the most accomplished players to come out of the Philippines, has been elected for induction into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in voting conducted by the United States Billiard Media Association. Also, in the Meritorious Service, Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart, founders of the American Poolplayers Association league system in 1979, were elected for induction. Bustamante, 46; Bell, 66; and Hubbart, 69, will be formally inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 during ceremonies in conjunction with the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake, Va. Bustamante, nicknamed “Django” because of a resemblance to the lead character in a Western film of the same name, was born in the Philippine province of Tarlac. He began playing pocket billiards at 10-years-old, and began competing in the United States in the early 1990s. He hit his stride in the United States in 1997, winning two Camel Pro Billiard Tour events. He was named Billiards Digest’s and Pool & Billiard Magazine’s Player of the Year in 1998 after notching four major tournament wins, and he earned Billiards Digest’s and Inside Pool’s Player of the Year titles again in 2002, winning five major events in the U.S. and abroad, and finishing second at the World Pool Championship. Bustamante finally garnered his first recognized world title in 2010, winning the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Doha, Qatar. His strongest game is 9-ball, where his blockbuster break is legendary; although he is more than proficient at all the major games, as witnessed by his All-Around title at the 2008 Derby City Classic. Upon hearing the news that he would be the second Filipino in the BCA Hall of Fame (after Efren Reyes’ 2003 induction), Bustamante was completely shocked. “Really? I’m still young!” Bustamante said. “Two things that I always dreamed of were to be world champion and to be in the Hall of Fame. This year both dreams came true. We all dream to be in the BCA Hall of Fame, so I am very happy today. We are heroes in the Philippines, but for the American people to recognize me like this makes me very proud.” Longtime road players and accomplished professionals, Bell and Hubbart decided to reach out to the grassroots players in 1979 through an amateur pool league they called the American Poolplayers Association (APA). Nationwide league systems like the BCA National 8-Ball leagues and Valley National Eight-

Ball Association were just getting started as well, but Bell and Hubbart opted to go in another direction. They developed a handicapping system to allow players of all skill levels to compete against each other. With the handicapping system in place, they began franchising their concept. Bell and Hubbart spent several years pouring all of their time and resources into developing the APA and its franchise system. With the support of sponsorship from Busch beer as a title sponsor beginning in 1981, the APA grew from 1,000 to 100,000 members over the next decade. Their ability to garner such non-endemic national sponsorship allowed the APA to grow into a league that today has more than a 250 thousand players and 270 franchisees. As a matter of fact, the APA was listed earlier this year as one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s “10 Great Franchises For Less Than $20,000.” “We were outcasts for a long time because we were looked at as competition,” Bell said. “But Larry and I just tried to build a business and do something worthwhile. We’ve always felt like we’ve done things that have helped the industry.” Voting was conducted by the USBMA Hall of Fame Board, which consists of USBMA members, elected At-Large members and living members of the BCA Hall of Fame. Induction is awarded to the player named on the most ballots. A second player is elected if he or she is named on more than 70 percent of the ballots. Bustamante (56 percent) was the leading vote getter, edging out familiar foe Ralf Souquet (46 percent) and fellow Filipino Jose Parica (44 percent). No other players were named on more than a quarter of submitted ballots. According to BCA Hall of Fame voting rules, this was the last year of eligibility for Parica and Jim Mataya in the Greatest Players category. Both individuals will be past the age of 60 in 2011, which means the Veterans Committee will consider them for possible induction in future years. To be eligible for consideration in the Greatest Player category, a player a) must be 40 years old by Jan. 1 of the year of their induction; b) must have a professional playing career of at least 10 years; and c) must have recorded significant achievements in U.S.-based events. Hubbart and Bell were placed on the general election ballot after the USBMA’s Board’s 10-member Meritorious Service Committee named them as its official nominee. Thirty-one of 39 board members voted to approve Hubbart and Bell, with a simple majority required for induction.

He defeated Kuo Po-cheng of Taiwan today 13-7 at the World Pool Championships in Doha, Qatar to finally be known no longer as the finest player not to have won a World Title.

To truly appreciate the significance of this feat you must go back to 2002 when Bustmante also played in the finals of the WPC against Earl Strickland. The evening prior to the final match word came from Manila that Bustamante’s daughter had taken ill and died. Bustamante, crushed, was told that he need not play the final, that all would understand. He considered this, but his wife somehow reached him and convinced him that their child would have wanted him to continue the fight.

And he did. In one of the bravest moments that our game has ever witnessed Bustamante took the stage while the crowd around him wept. Word had spread through the morning and the sight of this man continuing the battle after the hand that fate had dealt him was simply stunning.

He lost to Strickland that day, but won the hearts of every pool fan in the world. And since that moment we have been waiting, with him, for this. Today he defeated Antonio Lining 11-5 to re-enter the Final Arena and then put away Kuo Po-cheng, the man who has been in the quarter, semi, or final match of a WPC more times than any other player without a win.

Francisco Bustamante Wins World Crown


The Seminole Pro Tour continued its 2010 season with a stop at the Marietta Billiard Club in Marietta Georgia for the Gem City Classic July 9th through 11th. All of this year’s Tour winners, Johnny Archer (Mr. Cues II); Stevie Moore (Bankshots); Rodney Morris (Hollywood Billiards); and Donny Mills (Capone’s), tried to be the first repeat champion of the 2010 Tour. The past winners would have to get past a very loaded field of 64 players to try and stake their claim on the $20,000 guaranteed prize fund. The field included the regular Tour players such as Mike Davis, James Roberts, Hunter Lombardo, Charlie Williams, Corey Deuel, Tony Crosby and Tommy Kennedy as well as some new players to this year’s Tour, Nick Varner, Alex Smith, Shaun Wilkie, Allison Fisher, Mike Dechaine and Shane Van Boening. All of the first round matches of the tournament began Friday evening. One past tour winner, Rodney “The Rocket” Morris, did not survive the first round. Morris was defeated on a thrilling hill-hill match against Atlanta local John Visotsky. Visotsky made the first huge splash of the weekend. On day two he would face another Atlanta local favorite, Paul Song. Song sent Visotsky to the left side of the bracket with a 9-5 score. Visotsky continued his run by defeating Darin Brewer 9-4 and Tommy Najar 9-6 before finally being beaten by Sylver Ochoa 9-2 and falling just short of the money matches. Rodney Morris, now on the left side of the bracket, did not fair well on his second match either. Morris lost 9-7 to Mike Davis and would be the first of the past winners sent home. Stevie “The Blade” Moore began the tournament with a strong win against Ronny Park 9-1. Moore started day two with another win against Helena Thornfeldt 9-2. Moore then faced off against another past winner in Donny “Let’s Make a Deal” Mills. Moore started the match with an early lead, but Mills came from behind to shoot his way to a 9-7 victory. Moore then faced and beat Neil Fujiwara 9-7. Cliff Joyner would be next up against Moore at the start of day three. This match saw both players on the hill and Moore came away with a tough fought victory. Moore’s drama filled day did not end there. Up next was Shaun Wilkie, fresh from a defeat against Adam Smith 9-6. Wilkie and Moore exchanged matches back and forth. In the end it was Wilkie that moved on and Stevie Moore finished in 9th/10th place. Before his match with Stevie Moore, Donny Mills defeated Eddie Little and Jeff Crawford both by a count of 9-2. After his hard fought win against Moore, Mills ran into a buzz saw in Shane Van Boening. Mills had limited opportunities and was unable to capitalize against the few openings that Van Boening left. Mills lost 9-2 and moved onto the losers side of the bracket to face Tony Crosby. Crosby and Mills exchanged racks back and forth until both were on the hill. Mills ended Cosby’s tournament run and advanced to play “The Prince of Pool” Corey Deuel. Deuel and Mills have not faced each other

very much throughout their careers, but each time they do, it is always a match to be remembered and this one would be no different. Both players went on some runs, but at the end it was Deuel who advanced by a score of 9-5 and Mills was left in 7th/8th place. With all of the previous winners eliminated from the brackets, only one remained alive to try to repeat as multiple 2010 Tour winners, Johnny Archer. Archer would have an advantage in this tournament since he is the room owner and plays these tables on a daily basis. Archer started the tournament off against Jerry Grooms with a 9-5 victory. A match up against Rocky McElroy was next and Archer cruised to a 9-0 victory. Archer’s next opponent was John Brumback. Archer had his game on point, as he shot his way to a 9-2 victory. The road would get a little bumpy for Archer on his next match against Mike Dechaine. Dechaine came off a hill-hill victory against Rod Rentz, but showed no signs of fatigue as he beat Archer 9-6. Archer was sent left where Tommy Kennedy was waiting for him. Kennedy was cutting some sharp angles and made some superb shots, but Archer would not be denied and

advanced with a 9-7 score. Archer went back to the table to play Shaun Wilkie. Wilkie and Archer battled it out with each player making some shots sending the crowd in an uproar. The room owner and tournament favorite fell to Wilkie hill-hill and finished in 7th/8th place. With all of the past winners eliminated, this left the door open for a new winner to be crowed. The field was matched very close as there were amazing 26 hill-hill matches in the three day event. One player who was mowing his competition down with relative ease was Shane Van Boening. “The South Dakota Kid” had his signature breaks firing on all cylinders this weekend. Van Boening made up to 4 balls on some of his breaks, leaving his opponents with no other options but to watch him run the table. Van Boening would face Darin Brewer in the first round and win 9-6. Mark Gregory was next up and next down by a count of 9-3. James Roberts was the next to fall victim to Van Boening by a final of 9-1. Donny Mills fell next 9-2, followed by Charlie Williams by the same score of 9-2. The king of the hill match would be Van Boening versus Mike Dechaine. Despite Dechaine’s best efforts, Van Boening could not be stopped

and won the match 9-4. This set up the championship match, Shane Van Boening versus Charlie “The Dragon” Williams, who defeated Mike Dechaine in a hill-hill to win the left bracket. Van Boening would come out of the gates firing his big guns. Van Boening made short work of Williams and slew “The Dragon” for the second time in the weekend, this time by a score of 11-3. Van Boening won the top prize of $5,000 and add another name to this year’s list of champions for the Seminole Pro Tour. The Seminole Pro Tour would like to thank Johnny and Melanie Archer and the entire staff at the Marietta Billiard Club for hosting this auctioned packed weekend of 10-ball by some of the best players in the country. The 2010 Seminole Pro Tour returned to a familiar location this past weekend, Capone’s Billiards, in Spring Hill, FL. The field of 49 players was as strong a field as the previous tour stops this season. Several local players participated for the first time on this year’s tour and of course there were the usual Pro Tour veterans that made their appearances in the bracket. Several hill-hill matches highlighted the tournament and kept all the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the weekend. Newcomers took over the east side of the bracket for most of the tournament, but the skilled veterans, with their backs against the wall and no room for error on the left side of the bracket, showed their prowess and ended up in the money. The highlight of the first round of matches had to have been Rodney “The Rocket” Morris, winner of the last tour stop in Hollywood, CA and former house pro at Capone’s, against Donnie “Big Ern” Mills. Morris jumped to an early lead, but Mills quickly surpassed the deficit to defeat “The Rocket” 7-5. Morris then faced another tough opponent, Pro Tour regular James Roberts, in his next match. Roberts, who had previously lost 6-2 to Corey Deuel, would not fair any better versus Morris, as Morris would advance with a score of 7-3. Morris would continue with victories over Jerry Troy (7-4), Ricky Sanchez (7-1), and Charlie Williams (8-7) and finally met his match and lost (8-2) against young Justin Hall, who was riding a hot streak of his own. Morris finished in 9-12th place and took home the $425 prize. Tommy Kennedy, Charlie Williams, Corey Deuel, Tony Crosby, and Neil Fujiwara all saw their names

moved to the left side of the bracket during the first day of the tournament. Kennedy and Fujiwara were unable to recover from early defeats and had early exits from the tournament. Williams, Deuel, and Crosby faired a little better by making it to the money but all three finished in 13-16th place along with Raymond Linares. Deuel began the tournament very strong with some amazing shots that had all spectators in awe of his skilled shooting. Deuel defeated Johnny Causey (7-1) and James Roberts (7-2), but then faced Robb Saez, who sent Deuel west by beating him 7-3. On the one-loss side, Deuel faced a formidable foe in Pierre Palmari and squeaked by 7-5. Deuel would then square off against Anthony Meglino. South Florida native Meglino would end Deuel’s weekend play with an 8-5 defeat. Deuel finished in 13-16th place and collected the $325 prize money. Meglino would continue to face Stevie Moore in his next match and lose in a thrilling hill-hill match to finish in 9-12th place. The king of the hill match had two players who were making their 2010 debut in the Seminole Pro Tour Donnie Mills facing Robb Saez. Saez had made it to this point with victories against Bob McCulley (7-0), Tommy Kennedy (7-6), Corey Deuel (7-3), “Iron” Mike Davis (8-5) and Shaun Putnam (8-2). Mills road to the hot seat match consisted of matches against Rodney Morris (7-5), David Ross (7-0), Julio Aquino (7-5), Stevie Moore (7-2) and Johnny Archer (7-6). Saez would jump to an early lead in the match against Mills, but Mills ran several racks in a row and took the victory 8-3. Saez would move to the one-loss side to face

Johnny Archer in the semifinals match. The match would see each player make short runs, but it was Archer who would get the better of Saez and move on to the championship match, and send Robb Saez to a third place finish and a $1,500 prize. The championship match was an instant classic. Mills had displayed some powerful breaks all weekend, while Archer had played his typical methodical style game to help him advance to this point. With the match tied at 2 games apiece, Archer missed a straight shot on the 9 ball that would have left an easy shot on the 10 and send him up 3-2, instead it was Mills who took the early 3-2 lead. The two players would exchange racks and each had spectacular shots to their credit. Mills finally made a move with the score tied at 6. Archer shot a safety shot on the 6 ball, leaving a near impossible shot for Mills. Mills would bank in the 6 across the table and had the crowed in an uproar. He would go on the run the rack and go up 7-6. Archer would tie it back up at 7 and at one point turned to the crowd and asked who was cheering for him and requested their cheers. The crowd’s cheers would not be enough for Johnny Archers, as Donnie Mills would finally get the win with a count of 9-8. Mills secured the first place trophy and the $3,000 first place purse. Archer would settle for second place and the $2,500 prize. We thank Rocky McElroy, owner of Capone’s Billiards and the entire Capone’s staff for hosting this wonderful event.
