Jayson Shaw continued his east coast dominance with a win at the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour event at Raxx Pool Room & Grill in West Hempstead, NY on April 20th - 21st.

While Jayson has been virtually unbeatable recently, his winning this event would not be a “gimme” by any means, with a field that also included such notables as Mika Immonen, Mike Dechaine, Jeremy Sossei andTom D’Alfonso.

After a lopsided 9-2 win over Mika Immonen, Shaw would ride the winners side with wins over Brent Boemmelsand Michael Yednak, before a 9-3 win over D’Alfonso for the hot-seat.

Shaw’s opponent in the finals, Jeremy Sossei, had dropped his second match of the event to Pete Ziemak, but that hadn’t stopped him from running through the one loss side scoring notable wins over Zion Zvi, Mike Dechaine, Nelson Oliveira and

D’Alfonso.

The true double elimination finals would see set 1 go to Sossei 9-5, but Shaw came back to take the second set 9-7 for the tournament win.

The second chance event on Sunday saw Dave Shlemperis bounce back from a Brent Boemmels loss and double dip Boemmels in the finals 3-1 and 3-2 for the tournament win.

The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Fast Eddie’s Billiards Cafe in New Milford, CT on April 27th and 28th for their next tour stop.

Tour director Mike Zuglan is also still taking sign-ups for the Turning Stone Classic XXI, which will take place at Turning Stone Resort &

Although Tetreault was undefeated, he dodged his fair share of bullets in this event. His first match of the tournament found him trailing Tom Acciavati 7-2 before Tetreault righted his ship and won the match 9-8. Tetreault dodged another bullet in his final match of the day on Saturday when he saw his 8-4 lead over Dave Bounds get cut to a 8-8 scoreline. Again, Tetreault took control of the match and won the final game to stay undefeated on Saturday.Sunday play saw Tetreault score a 9-6 win over Jeremy Sossei and then a 9-7 win overNelson Oliviera for the hot-seat.Oliviera would fall to Sossei 9-3 on the left side of the board and Sossei would face Tetreault in the finals.The final match would be another close one with the score tied at 8-8 in the first set of the finals. Tetreault missed a tough 7-ball in the case game, but left Sossei hooked and would get another trip to the table, where he ran the final three balls for the 9-8 win.Tetreault earned $1200 for first place, with Sossei taking home $900 for second.The second chance event on Sunday saw 30 players who failed to make it to day two competed for $1100 in prize money. This event would be won by Redgie Cutler, who defeated Aaron Greenwood 3-0 for the

By Skip Maloney - Az Billiards.comThere was some crossover talent on display at the Florida-based Poison Tour stop on the weekend of April 13-14; Trevor Moore and Jason Richko, to be specific. They took first and second, respectively, in the $1,000-added Amateur event that drew 54 entrants to Capone’s Billiards Lounge in Spring Hill, FL, and ended up fourth (Moore) and tied for fifth (Richko) in the $1,000-added Open/Pro event, won by tour director Tony Crosby, that drew 21.In the Amateur event, Moore and Richko met up first among the winners’ side final four, as OB Cirilo and Pierre Palmieri squared off in the other winners’ side semifinal. Richko took the first of their two sets (and single, deciding game) 7-4 and in the hot seat match, faced Palmieri, who’d downed Cirilo 7-2. Richko won his last match defeating Palmieri 7-3 to sit in the hot seat.Moore moved over and picked up Jason Bowen, who’d gotten by Norm Pincine and Jimmy Dean, both 5-3. Cerilo drew John Wing, who’d defeated Brian Miller 5-3 and Mark Wathen 5-1. Moore survived a double hill struggle against Bowen, and in the quarterfinals, met up with Cerilo, who’d eliminated Wing 5-3.Moore moved on with a 5-3 win over Cerilo in the quarterfinals and a 5-2 victory over Palmieri in the semifinals. He and Richko battled to double hill in the opening set, before Moore prevailed to force a single deciding game to determine the winner. Moore took the single game to claim the amateur title.In the Open/Pro event, Moore was among the winners’ side final four, where he faced Donnie Mills. Tony Crosby, in the meantime, squared off against his eventual finals opponent, James Roberts. Mills sent Moore west 7-3 and in the battle for the hot seat, faced Crosby, who’d survived a double hill match against Roberts. Crosby moved into the hot seat with a 7-4 victory over Mills.

Moore moved over to pick up Robert Batson, who’d gotten by Justin Hall and Gary Gilsinan,

both 6-4. Roberts picked up Richko, who’d defeated John DiToro 6-1 and Michael Lear 6-4. Roberts downed Richko 6-4, as Moore was busy eliminating Batson 6-3. Roberts then ended Moore’s run with a 6-4 win in the quarterfinals.Roberts moved on, defeating Mills in the semifinals 6-2, for a shot at Crosby in the hot seat. Crosby, though, spoiled Roberts’ bid, defeating him 7-5 in the only set necessary.Crosby expressed his thanks to Capone’s Billiards and Poison Cues for helping make this event happen. The next stop on the Poison Tour will be May 18th - 19th at Cunningham’s Billiards in Vero Beach, Florida.

When you first started out in pocket billiards you were an all offensive player. You went for everything. When you approached the table your purpose was to win.

If you go for the win twenty times you will win many games. In fact, the more you go for a win the more you will win. You cannot win a game by playing safe.

How about those run and gun shooters?

They have more fun than the conservative player. But you have to know when to go for it. I won’t go for a low percentage bank shot. That is one chance to win and it is a slim one. When I am faced with no shot, I will look at how many balls can I get moving with this one shot? If I can send my object ball into a clump and get some balls rolling, I am tempted to do that.

In a very serious match in Wisconsin I ran seven racks of nine ball in a row. On three of those runs I sent balls crashing into other balls just to keep my run going. In other words, I used the “Poke and Hope” style. It was fun and I kept my turn at the table for seven racks.

If you develop an aggressive style people will begin to fear you. I won a race to five on all short racks. That is enough to drive an opponent into retirement. He would not shake my hand after the match.

When you send an object ball into a cluster you should use force follow (over spin). This puts back spin on the object ball and with the back spin you send the other balls a further distance. Plus the cue ball is turned into a missile as it careens forward in an uncontrolled manner.

This type of shooting makes a pure shooter sick. Make sure you have a dumbfounded look on your face when balls drop into the pockets. You are welcome to mutter “how did that happen” as you proceed to run out for the win.

Be creative. I had a very makeable four ball in the corner pocket. The nine was on the other end of the table near the rail as a big ball. In other words, it was a thumb width off the rail. I saw that I could bank the four into the rail just before the nine and I’d make the nine. I also saw that I could hide the cue ball behind the seven and separate it from the four ball. This was a chance to win that many players never see. I banked the four, almost made the nine, hung it in the pocket and left him no way to even hit the four ball. So with ball in hand I finished what I started.

Most importantly, enjoy the game. Put the fun back into it. In your next tournament play a run and gun type of offense. Lock and load when you go to the table. Smile when balls drop in.

I faced a two ball that was in a cluster. All I could see was the edge of the ball so I was looking at an easy safe. I chose to kick the two ball hard. This meant that five balls were going to be sent on their way and two of them dropped in the pocket with one of them being the nine ball.

Cock that cue and blast your way to the finals. May all the rolls go your way.

Double Follow ShotsWhen I was first learning pool, the book I learned from was Willie Mosconi’s “Winning Pocket Billiards.” In the back of the book are some trick shots including some rather remarkable stroke shots that Willie wowed audiences with during his many exhibitions. I didn’t realize that such shots might not be intended for beginners, so I went ahead and learned them even before I could run a rack.

Here are two shots that are both amazing (to players who don’t know much about the game) and useful. They are also not that hard to shoot if you’re willing to spin the cue ball and hit it a little harder than the typical shot. I call them “double follow” because they follow to the rail and then they follow back to the same rail.

Even as a beginner, I liked to play Shot 1. At nine ball you could play the simple stop shot bank on the 1 ball but that would leave a very tough cut on the 2. If you’re not playing a run-out player, why not try to get shape? Even if you are playing a good player, a safety battle is as likely to leave him with the first good run-out possibility as you.

To make the bank reasonable here, the 1 ball needs to be a little off the cushion to avoid the kiss and at an angle where you need to hit slightly on the right side of the 1. Just slightly. Left follow will take the cue ball to the left (from the shooter’s viewpoint) and the follow after the cushion contact will take the cue ball back towards the rail. You might even get a second cushion on the way to shape on the 2.

When practicing the shot, first work to get the right action on the cue ball, then worry about mak-ing the

bank. You will soon learn the positions that work for both the bank and double follow.

Shot 2 comes up far more often. You have an almost-hanger that’s by the pocket but with a little angle and

you want to leave the cue ball on the cushion for an easy 5-9 combo to win the game. Trying a stop shot either

misses the shot or slides too far to the side. You could try a slow roller and pray for a table and a round cue ball.

A surer way is to play a double follow with inside (right) English on the cue ball. The English will keep the cue ball from going too far towards the 5 and 6. The long distance

between the cue ball and the 4 is actually helpful because the table will put follow on the cue ball over that distance so as long as you start the cue ball with some follow, it will have plenty by the time it gets to the 4.

Plan B for this shot is from Mosconi’s book. If you hit the 4 a little thinner and with no English or a little left English, a little harder, and maybe a little more follow, you can loop the cue ball around the 5-6 and go for the 9 immediately. This is an excellent shot to convince your opponent that either you’re crazy or much better than he thought or both, so it’s really a psychological play. It’s also fun.

If you hope to improve your game, you need to increase your comfort zone and learn to make shots you don’t yet enjoy playing. Spending a few minutes with these shots will help do that.

I wonder why pool players go against the grain most every time? They don’t get help. If you were studying the martial arts you’d have a sensei, you would have someone teaching you the craft. If you played golf, you would have somebody help you with your swing, with your approach shot, your putting, at least to help you become better than what you are. If you’ve played any sports you know you have a coach. He teaches you, he shows you, makes you practice and do drills that will help you in the long run. Not so with the average pool player, not so with most pool players.

It seems to be, in my opinion, an ego thing. For some reason, if we ask for help or go to a billiard school, to have lessons, somehow, we are admitting that we don’t know enough about the game. We’re not good enough, or even worse because somebody is better than us, and God only knows that nobody can be better than we are. This phenomenon seems to stretch across all classes of pool players, whether it’s average barroom pokers or top players. They will practice the drills at times, not the shots that they have a hard time doing or to remember the English and how it takes and where it goes, but they don’t get instructions, and I’m talking about most. There are exceptions of course and those players are to be applauded.

In my opinion, in order for your game to get better you have to find someone, first that you trust, someone that has accomplished winning, whether its in a local tournament, regional or national. Someone who has been there, done that, been in pressure situations, in the finals. Being able to know the mental game is 80-90% of how good you shoot. Experience they say is the best teacher. This is true but in order to have quality experience you must practice. In order to practice you must have someone show you or tell you what you are doing incorrectly.

Old habits are hard to break, whether it’s with your swing, whether it’s with your stance, whether it’s your mental game or whether it’s how you approach the table, what your routine is, whether it’s the way you stroke your cue, or whether it’s how you hit, whether you stand up. There are numerous things that can go wrong in your game. We’ve all experienced those, so practice, with a qualified instructor or drills. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a start and in my opinion you may need to use more than one instructor. Instructors are human beings and some have strengths in one area or another. You may find that going to another instructor will help you in your game even more.

As Kennedy was busy sending Jesse Engel to the west bracket 7-4, among the winners’ side final four, Gore had his hands full with his first of three double hill matches. He prevailed in the first against David Grossman to face Kennedy, but dropped the second, leaving Kennedy in the hot seat.

Engel moved over to pick up Mark Coats, who’d gotten by Jason Clark and defeated Bobby Garza 7-5. Grossman drew Trevor Moore, who’d been sent to the loss side by Engel, and defeated Larry Warf and Tomo Ito 7-4. Coats and Moore handed Engel and Grossman their second straight loss, both by 7-4, and moved on to face each other in the quarterfinals.

Moore then downed Coats by the same 7-4 score, and locked up in a double hill battle against Gore (his third in a row) in the semifinals. Gore dropped the final 9-ball for a second shot at Kennedy in a single, extended race-to-11 final. No double hill struggle for Gore this time, as Kennedy took the single match 11-5 to claim the event title.

His tournament trail included wins over Dave Shlemperis 7 - 4; Darren DeFelippis 7 - 1; Marco Costello 7 - 2; Koka Davladze 7 - 5; Andrej Kaldon 7 - 5; and Alan Chan 8 - 4 to get to the Hot Seat. While Juan and Alan waited and locked into 2nd and 3rd respectively, Koka Davladze won five matches, on the loss side, to reach the Finals.

There was, according to Brandon Shuff, “a lot of b.s. in the finals” of the Action Pool Tour stop on the weekend of March 30-31. He was, of course, referring to his own initials, and those of his finals opponent, Brett Stottlemyer. Stottlemyer, currently ranked # 1 on the tour, came from the loss side to challenge Shuff in the finals, and although he just did win the opening set, Shuff won the second set to claim the title. The event drew 55 entrants to Q Master Billiards in Virginia Beach, VA.Shuff’s six-match march to the finals went through Tim Colvin, Paul Swinson, Ray Reyna, and Larry Kressel to arrive among the winners’ side final four and a battle against R.J. Carmona. Stottlemyer’s path went through Debbie Davis, Kevin West, and Larry Phlegar, before running into Danny Mastermaker, who sent him to the loss side 8-6. Mastermaker moved on to face Reymart Lim in the other winners’ side semifinal.Shuff downed Carmona 8-3 and in the battle for the hot seat, faced Lim, who’d defeated Mastermaker 8-5. Shuff dominated the hot seat match 8-2 and waited on the return of Stottlemyer.Stottlemyer moved over and gave up only four racks over 16 games against, first Tim Colvin (6-3) and then, Kevin West (6-1), to pick up Carmona. Mastermaker drew Kressel, who’d gotten by Dominic Noe and Bill Duggan, both 6-4. Kressel spoiled Stottlemyer’s hopes for a re-match against Mastermaker by defeating him 6-4, as Stottlemyer advanced with a 6-2 victory over Carmona.Stottlemyer then dropped Kressel 6-2 in the quarterfinals, and got his shot against Shuff with a 6-4 victory over Lim in the semifinals. He entered

those finals having won as many games on the winners’ side as he had on the loss side (30). He gave up an average of five racks in each of his four winners’ side matches, but reduced that average figure to just over two in his five loss-side victories. Stottlemyer opened the two-set final with a double hill win, but was bested by Shuff 6-4 in the second set. Stottlemyer’s second-place finish, combined with his participation in all seven of the stops to date left him atop the Action Pool Tour’s rankings. Though Shuff, who entered the event ranked at #26 (on the basis of only two events; now three) moved up in those rankings, he’ll need to win a few more to catch Stottlemyer.

It was, by almost any measure, a sterling performance. Not only did Shane Van Boening win the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship at this year’s Super Billiards Expo at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison, NJ (April 4-7) for the second year in a row, becoming the first back-to-back champion, he did it by giving up only two, race-to-8 double sets through six matches. Van

Boening has won this event four times, out of six tries, dating back to 2008. His opponent in the finals, Thorsten Hohmann, gave up only three sets to reach the finals and then gave up two more to finish in second place. The $10,000 guaranteed first-place-prize event drew 61 of the nation’s top pool players to the Super Billiards Expo’s new location in Edison, NJ, after 19 years in the King of Prussia region of Pennsylvania.The Diamond Women’s Open 9-Ball Pro Players Championship, with its $5,000-guaranteed, first-place prize, drew 19 entrants and featured a single, race-to-11 format. It was won by Allison Fisher, whose four-match march to the finals (following an opening round bye) went through Mandi Capps 11-1, Grace Nakamura 11-2, Dawn Hopkins 11-6 and finally, Jia 11-6. The Open 10-Ball event’s double-set format (races to 8, best two out of three, single elimination) created 60 matches, overall, with 20 of them requiring a third, deciding set. Any questions about the overall quality of this year’s Open field could be answered with a list of the players eliminated by the two finalists, Van Boening and Hohmann. Van Boening went through Donnie Mills, Robb Saez, Ralf Souquet (to whom he gave up his first set),Darren Appleton, Warren Kiamco and finally, Hohmann, to whom Van Boening gave up the second of his two lost sets, in the finals. To reach those finals, Hohmann started things off with a 2-0 match victory over Efren Reyes, and followed that with wins over John Morra (giving up one set), Dennis Hatch (another set), Jayson Shaw, and Alex Pagalayun, before taking one and giving up two sets to Van Boening.All four of the matches among the final eight players were won by 2-0 match scores; Van Boening over Appleton (8-6, 8-7), Kiamco defeating Corey Deuel (8-6, 8-7), Alex Pagalayun versus Jeremy Sossei (8-6, 8-1, Pagalayun), and Hohmann over Jayson Shaw (8-4, 8-7). Pagalayun was defeated 8-4 in the opening set of his semifinal match against Hohmann, but came back to reverse that score in a second set 8-4 win. Hohmann got right back on track to defeat him 8-3 in the deciding set. Van Boening dropped Kiamco into the tie for third place 8-6, 8-5.Van Boening took the opening set of the final against Hohmann 8-6, but Hohmann fought back to edge out a double hill win in the second set. Van Boening picked up the pace a little and won the final set 8-4 to take home the $10,000, first-place prize.

The Women’s event featured a total of four double hill matches, and finalist Li Jia was involved in two of them, back to back. She downed Jennifer Baretta that way in the second round, and followed up with a double hill win over Canadian Brittany Bryant. She moved on to one of the two semifinal matches against Sarah Rousey, who’d eliminated Morgan Steinman 11-7. She defeated Rousey 11-4 to move into the finals. Fisher, in the meantime, played a total of 42 games over three matches to meet Jia in the finals. She won 33 of them (78%). She gave up six to Jia in the finals to knock the overall average down by four points, but she took the title and its $5,000 guaranteed first-place prize.

TAP – RALLY IN EDISON 2013 – Edison, NJTAP, LLC has another successful history making event !Little River, SC, April 18th, 2013 - There was electricity in the air, as thousands of eyes were set on watching and playing yet another legendary Dream Team/Singles Rally at Edison event at the NJ Expo Center and for good reason.Players created Dream Team Rosters of TAP players from

all over the USA and Canada. The competition was stiff and it wasn’t black and white who

the winners would be in either the 8 ball dream team, 9 ball dream team or 8 ball singles events.Registration started on Wednesday April 3rd in conjunction with the Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo. TAP event staff welcomed players and licensees and provided their badges, programs and information. Registration continued through the 4th, while the TAP National meeting for Licensees and TAP Corporate took place at the Sheraton Edison. On the evening of the 4th, the 8 Ball Singles competition started on 90 Diamond Tables. Players of all skill levels played in the double elimination brackets and continued each evening throughout the weeks’ event. 8 and 9 Ball Dream Team competitions started the morning of the 5th running on high voltage as 180 dream teams played round robin then out to single elimination until its completion on the 7th.Livestreaming by Onsite Pool Network provided a new kind of exposure to a TAP event, that was not provided before. Players at the event and throughout the world could watch the matches in 8, 9 and Singles competition on two tables throughout the extended weekend. Commentating, scores, interviews and information were provided in High Definition and speeds of all types to accommodate different cellphones, tablets and laptops. McDermott Handcrafted Cues, TAP’s Cue Sponsor,

was onsite with TAP Members Only Specials, and provided instruction and sales of their products from their booth.Sharkin U Apparel once again provided sales of their popular demand apparel line and provided gift packages to each of the singles event winners.TAP Apparel showcased their new line of apparel, event shirts and the TAP Online store as well as their new full line of customized products they can do for TAP Players and their Licensees. As a vendor, the TAP Sales and information booth had a busy 4 days as well, at this year’s Super Billiard Expo and TAP’s Rally event. The people that stopped by to ask about bringing TAP into their area seemed to be charged up, serious and interested even more than in the past years, which has been greatly successful. People spoke of being tired of their league that they are now in and feel TAP is the better choice for them and their players. At this time, one contract in New England has been signed and another in New York is expected shortly. Many of the people gathered information and advertising to take back and talk to their players to see how much interest is there before they committed

but more new licensees are expected in the coming months. Most, if not all, were very optimistic that players in their area want a change. With events like the Rally Dream Team events, TAP hosting our nationals by traveling to all parts of the United States plus the overall TAP format, Pool-Net software and other features of what TAP offers their members it seems to be just what they are looking for in a league.So the Event and the Competition throughout the event was impressive. Several “on the hill” matches were played by all. Some great amateur play happened.

At the end of the week, the Rally in Edison 2013 Champions were crowned.

Personally I think live streaming is the best thing to happen to pool since “The Color of Money”. We are still in the infancy of live streaming. The first time I saw it on my computer was in the summer of 2007. I was amazed. I was sitting in my house, in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, in Montana and I was watching two players in Olathe, Kansas playing pool for thousands of dollars. How cool could this be?

It was almost like watching a movie. The commentary was more in the lines of people talking in a pool hall than a movie script but that was fine. I grew up in a pool hall. I’m not here critiquing that quality.I am mystified by the lack of viewership. As the summer of 2013 approaches, its been six years. The commentary has come from entertaining to professional and that’s a good thing. The quality of the stream for some has become excellent.Yet the number of viewers are still down. If you use percentages you may be up 10% or 20% and maybe more. When you start with only a few hundred viewers to possibly one to two thousand that seems great if you are live streaming. I have. I have gotten as low as and as high as these numbers.I’m not speaking of the live streamers in any negative way. We have worked for nothing or next to it. Sometimes the only payment is a handshake and thank you or someone saying, “This is really cool, man!” We try to get sponsors, advertisers or logos on the live stream. Commercials inside the live stream and it is a rough road to travel. There’s the travel to, the set up, making sure the internet has enough upload speed, test the audio, check your cameras and no matter how many times you do this something can always go wrong. So before you start your show you cross your fingers. Then there is the countless number of hours, usually 12+ per day that you are on the air. Kudos to all the live streamers. Clearly its not all about the money. To me it was always about the numbers.We do not get the numbers even the pros. Shows on cable have been cancelled because they only have a viewership of 150,000. Imagine any live streamer getting that kind of numbers! On our Ustream page we show a viewership of over one million but the numbers don’t match up. The statistical analysis that is offered by Ustream doesn’t match the viewership numbers displayed on the home page they are putting out. Imagine if you will a live streamer, any live streamer, taking the total number of viewers that you would get from a weekend of live streaming, anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 and that would be what you would see at any given time watching the live streaming! Whether it would be a league national championship, the U. S. Open or any $5,000 added pool tournament. Where are the viewers? If you are reading this and you have never seen a live streaming, go to Ustream.tv, search words, “billiards, pool” and find two or three live streamings and make it your favorite. And don’t forget to watch the challenge matches too. There are some pay for view matches that are excellent. We have to get the numbers up if this is to grow. Watch - just watch. We Salute You!It seems I have hit some nerves but at least people are finally taking note of what I am saying. I want to make it very clear I am pointing out problems and possible solutions to these problems so we may elevate our sport not calling out individuals for public crucifixion. So to change it up a little I would like to use this month to recognize and thank the people who keep pool alive. Whether it be volunteering at an event, hosting one, running a league or streaming tournaments, without these people we are extinct.

Last month I made reference to our regional BCA event as an area that needs some tending to, the key word being some. This is also a place where many people give up time everyday to set up and put on these events, most of which wear several hats. If you haven’t been to the website, www.westernbca.org, you many not know how many people it takes to put on these events and that they are always in need of more bodies. From the president all the way down to the raffle girls everyone is a volunteer, except for the refs. I’m pretty sure you can figure out that this doesn’t come together over night, when I said everyday

I meant exactly that. They do this not for the glory, but for a true love of the game. These are generally thankless jobs so please let me say thank you. This of course doesn’t just apply to the BCA but to any league or tour, amateur orprofessional.

Then we have our league operators and division managers, the nuts and bolts of the leagues, without them we can’t qualify to play in regional or national events. Sometimes it seems we take them for granted or maybe just don’t understand what all they do. Someone has to set up the places we play and what night, make the schedule, print score sheets, record and submit scores, take entries and confirm eligibility for tournaments, and be up to date on rules and regs. to keep their players informed, and that is just the tip of their iceberg. I would like to thank all of them individually but as I don’t have all their names I guess a general thanks will have to do. However I would like to say a personal thank you to my operators and manager for all they do,

Ford, Chris, Rose and Elaine you guys rock! If you haven’t said it to yours now is as good a time as any.

So many people give their time for little or no money so we can play and compete and we need to start being aware of and grateful for what they do. Hopefully in the near future we can change the standing of billiards so we may better pay and hire those qualified, maybe even get the players more involved too. For one last time let me say thank you for all you do. Do stand, take a bow and pat yourselves on the back, if you don’t have someone to do, cause you deserve at least that.

I would like to thank those of you who have replied with your thoughts and opinions on last months issue and look forward to hearing from more of you. Do you have a topic you would like to see covered? Please submit those as well as replies. I am interested in the good the bad and some of the ugly, as long as no one gets hurt. If you expect better then give your best!

Signing on in a specific attempt to qualify for the WPBA US Open, China's Si Meng Chen entered the Maryland State WPBA 9-Ball Championships, an April 20-21 stop on the J. Pechauer Northeast Women's Tour. The All-Japan Women's Division Champion and Philippine Open Ladies Champion (both 2011) faced a field of 27 that had been drawn to the $1,500-added event at Triple Nines in Elkridge, MD. The field included an already-qualified-for-the-Open Karen Corr, so by the time Chen got into the hot seat by defeating Corr, her primary goal had been accomplished. She completed an undefeated weekend with a victory over Corr in the finals.

Their first meeting was a double hill affair. Chen had sent Nicole Nester west 7-3, as Corr was busy shutting outKathy Friend. Chen then prevailed in the double hill, hot seat match and waited on Corr's return.

Friend moved to the loss side and picked up Megan Smith, who'd downed Sharon O'Hanlon 7-1 and tour director Linda Shea 7-5. Nester drew Yomaylin "Smiley" Feliz, who'd eliminated Borana Andoni 7-5 and Shanna Lewis 7-2. Friend survived a double hill match against Smith, and in the quarterfinals, faced Feliz, who'd defeated Nester 7-4.

Feliz took the quarterfinal match 7-4, but ran into a seemingly very determined Corr, who shut her out in the semifinals. Neither the wait, nor the history of her opponent phased Chen, as she took the opening set of a potential, double-elimination final 7-2 to claim the Maryland State title, and put a little icing on her qualification for the WPBA US Open.

A-Karim Moumen and Wilson Cruz opted to split the top prizes from the Saturday, April 13 stop on the Tri-State Tour. They met once, in the battle for the hot seat, which was won by Moumen, and when Cruz came back from a victory in the semifinals, they chose not to play a final match. The $760-added, A-D handicapped event drew 36 entrants to Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ.They got into their one and only match after Moumen had defeated George Poltorak 6-2 and Cruz had downed Bob Larbalestrien 7-5 in the two winners’ side semifinals. They battled to double hill in the subsequent hot seat match, but Moumen prevailed in what turned out to be his final match. Cruz would play only one more.Poltorak moved west to pick up Tony Ignomirello, who’d gotten

by Kyle Bubet, double hill, and Tom Riley 6-4. Larbalestrien drew Jimmy Rivera, who’d fallen to Scott Simonetti in a first-round, double hill match, and then proceeded to win seven straight on the loss side. With three notches on his loss-side belt, he wreaked his vengeance on Simonetti 7-4 and then, defeated Guy Iannuzzi by the same score to face Larbalestrien.Rivera advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5 win over Larbalestrian, and was met by Ignomirello, who’d handed Poltorak his second straight

loss 6-3. Rivera won his final match in an 8-6 quarterfinal victory over Ignomirello, and then, fell to Cruz, in a straight up, race-to-7, double hill match in the semifinals. At this point, Moumen and Cruz opted out of a final match, declaring Moumen, as the undefeated occupant of the hot seat, the event’s official winner.

Adam Towery faced three different opponents in the final three matches of his undefeated performance on the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s Spring Fling Amateur Bar Table Championships, April 20-21. Towery defeated them all, on his way to the event title, with its guaranteed $5,000 payout for a full field of 64. It drew 67 to Chalk It Up Billiards in La Grange, GA.

The first of Towery’s final three was J.R. Rossman, in one of the winners’ side semifinals, as Matthew Cummings and Daryl Gables (owner of Chalk It Up Billiards) squared off in the other. Towery got into the hot seat match with a 9-7 win over Rossman, and was met by Cummings, who’d defeated Gables 7-5. Towery took care of the second of his final three with a 9-3 win that left him in the hot seat.

Rossman moved over and picked up Randy Jordan, who was on a loss-side streak that would take him all the way to the finals, having defeated Jason Stewart 11-5 and, in a re-match, Stoney Stone 11-3. Gables picked up Timmy Heath, who’d gotten by Jeff Hooks 9-3 and Matt Dewease 9-6 to reach him. Jordan and Heath advanced; Jordan with an 11-7 win over Rossman and Heath, 9-4 over Gables.

Randy Jordan took the quarterfinal match against Heath that followed 11-7. He then took down Matthew Cummings in the semifinals 11-6 to become Towery’s final opponent. Towery, an A player, started with two on the wire, and though Jordan would chalk up nine games, so did Towery to win it.

I drove back from Kansas to Lucky’s Ranch. The drive was long so we started a conversation about life. We in a deep conversation covered what seemed to be a scratch on the surface.

I said “Life travels across vast knowledge. What we pick up along the way is based on what we previously know and want to know or believe, which makes it limited to our own sphere of the world. In today’s world, everyone seems to know everything, so they say how can one not be informed. We all want to feel that we know it all and our opinion is upmost, Most of that is an illusion”……..

Lucky believes “that there are two ways to look at how the world develops: the first is through the progress of history and human civilization, and the second is through the progress of knowledge and human understanding”……Knowledge moves when intake of information is greater than any previous generation? We are bombarded with words and ideas, pictures and concepts. The classic example is that we once believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Everyone was told that. The religious thought kept knowledge from progressing. This notion has rarely publicly questioned for centuries. Eventually one becomes compels to ask the question: why? Most of us do this in everyday life.

And I am no different.

We spent time establishing what we did know or thought we knew. This whole conversation was

fun. Most of my discovery was that Lucky was so knowledgeable. I had 8 years of College and Lucky never went to college and knew so much. He spent time reading and consciously teaching himself and not relying on just beliefs that everyone one else might have.

He had so much more substance that playing pool and reading people.

The world of pool has changed the romantic era of pool should never be forgotten because as knowledge is our predecessors made pool better through each year. Pool would not have the identity without champions like Ralph Greenleaf, Willie Hoppe

Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras, Mike Sigel’s and Efren Reyes’s. Or the Hustlers Minnesota Fats, Ronnie Allen, Cornbread Red.

It was a game of nobles now everyone play at it. The word “pool” means a collective bet, or ante. Many non-billiard games, such as poker, involve a pool but it was to pocket billiards that the name became attached. The term “poolroom” now means a place where pool is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Pool tables were installed so patrons could pass time between races. The two became connected in the public mind, but the unsavory connotation of “poolroom” came from the betting that took place there, not from billiards.

if you leave her an out, she will be out. Ted Harris is one of the strongest players in South Florida; he has a skill of 9. Harris can run out and run racks. So when your team has to play the Storm Riders and you get matched up to play Harris, just do your best, watch and learn. Harris also makes his own cues and repairs cues. While Juan waited in the Hot Seat, Paul Bramwell his next three matches to once again faced Juan in a bid to win the event. Paul took an early lead and nearly won with a 6 - 1. Lu: I have had the opportunity to travel the world and I wouldn’t change a thing Viper: Who were/are your favorite professionals? Lu: I really liked Rodney Morris, when I was a kid I got to watch him in action and he was unbeatable in Taiwan. Viper: How do you prepare for events?Lu: I listen to my music on my iPod and practice for a few hours per day. I work on my break and play the ghost. I like to listen to American hip-hop music – Lady Ga Ga Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given?Lu: The National Coach for the Taiwanese team told me once growing up to not ever worry about the score and try to stay relaxed as much as possible.

Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool?Lu: I love everything about competing especially when I am winning.
