ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

.

Over the years, our “Co-Owners of the Future” Summer Internship programme has

been adventurously designed to challenge those who want to give their careers an

inspired head-start and leap beyond their comfort zones.

This year, we received around 1,300 applications for 14 available positions from

students of top-tier universities such as University of Oxford, University of Toronto,

UC Berkeley, UCLA, HKU and more. At HKBN, we believe diversity is both the key

to our long term success and the primary factor behind creativity and talent. As such,

we welcome students from different nationalities and cultural background; our

applications have hailed from countries including Germany, India, Korea, Pakistan,

Singapore, UK, Ukraine, USA, and of course, Hong Kong.

We always have high expectations for our interns: being HKBN interns does not mean

they are less knowledgeable or are at the bottom of the hierarchy. Instead, interns here

must try hard to learn, absorb and explore as much as possible. Besides working in

their assigned departments, they must also take lead in different business and corporate

social investment projects, engage various stakeholders as well as share what they’ve

learnt to our fellow Talents.

These selected 14 elite Talents have gone through group and individual assessments to

ensure they possess an eagerness to work at HKBN with a vision for the future. As

individuals, these future Co-Owners stand out for being innovative and responsive

together with a high ability for leaning as well as great presentation and interpersonal

skills.

We hope they can go the extra mile to challenge themselves through extraordinary

experiences and learning opportunities in this 8-week journey. In our endeavor, we

believe internship should be about inspiration, the kind that expands horizons for our

next generation of Hong Kong leaders. And this aligns with our call to “Make our

Hong Kong a Better Place to Live”!

This is Anna, a final year Law student in the Chinese University of Hong Kong next year. I am an optimistic, dynamic person with persistence and resilience. This would be a exciting and challenging journey of gains and gives. Being attached to Talent Management Department, I have two goals: 1.Gains: better equip myself with advanced practical skills and HKBN acronym “TREE” deeply rooted in mind. 2. Gives: stay dynamic and proactive with passion to work with all talents around. Reading is my life. Indeed not only books, people and the environment can also be read. By “reading” people, I learn from their positive attitudes and behaviours or even, prevent from making the same mistakes. By “reading” the environment”, I perceive shoutouts conveyed by groups I rarely in contact with in the society without veil of ignorance. “Never stop until I make the world a better place.” is my motto. Persistence and resilience are my strengths at work and in life that I would never give up to reach my goal. By virtue of this, I would be continually actively engaged in society with passion and caring with other people to make this city a lovable place for all of us.

Kate Mok—Administration

I am Dustin, currently a 2nd year Engineering student at the University of Oxford. My aim is to be as proactive as possible and make the most out of the HKBN experience. Outside work, I have a passion for sports: I’ve been representing school and college football teams for many years. I also enjoy snowboarding with family and friends during the skiing season.

I am Kate, currently studying at UC Berkeley and I am going to be a senior in the fall with my greatest excitement towards it. I love traveling and challenging myself. For example, I like playing basketball even though I am very short. Before I went to California, I was a full time salesperson at Lee Jeans and Physical Fitness. These experiences strengthened my communication skill and confidence, I am even too talkative sometimes. In these two months at HKBN, except accomplishing challenging responsibilities, I also desire to develop professional competencies needed for my future job search and career success.

Joannie Yuen — Administration

My name is Kong, I am studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto. I am a fencer; I enjoy fencing because it is a sports of tactics and stamina. I will be working at Network Planning & Commercial Department for the coming two months. I am sure me and my colleagues are going to make it a remarkable summer together.

Shun Kong Cheung —Network Technology

Nawaj Sharif —Network Technology

I am Joannie from the University of Toronto and I am going to my final year of study majoring in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies, as well as Buddhism, Psychology And Mental Health. I would describe myself as a detail minded person and fast learner, which makes me an asset in the HKBN Summer Internship. As a local growing up in Hong Kong, I have witnessed inequality between different social classes. Also, I have experienced the hardships that our educational policies caused. Therefore, through joining this internship programme, I aimed to learn from talents at HKBN and make my Hong Kong a better place to live. Working in Admin department makes me realize the importance of HKBN interview process as the interview requires flexibility and out of the box thinking skills. My job is not the typical admin work that everyone else were expecting. Instead, I have to help improve our office space into a green and friendly environment. I found this challenging but I would still love to take this responsibility because in life, we are either getting better or getting worse. No one will stop and wait for us to improve. Only us can make ourselves competitive for this world.

I’m Nawaj, an Electrical Engineering student from the University of Hong Kong. Apart from academia, I enjoy paddling Dragon Boat. I also like cooking as much as I do eating out. As an intern at HKBN, I am currently working on expanding a Planning Database System in order to make project planning processes more efficient and user-friendly. I hope to make our Hong Kong a better place to live through impactful contributions to HKBN. Alongside day-to-day work, I believe that venturing into events including JPMorgan and Microsoft company visits will broaden my understanding of B2B relationship. I aim to leverage this internship opportunity like an ‘eagle’ and explore the need for a cross-functional approach to problem solving in an industrial setting.

I am Kathy and I have just completed my first year of Law at Durham University, United Kingdom. I am so excited to learn more about working as an in-house lawyer and meeting people coming from different backgrounds here at and outside of HKBN through networking events. Ever since high school, I've always lived by the quote "in every difficulty lies an opportunity". In my short time at HKBN, I have already run into challenges which in turn have been rewarding, I look forward to being given more challenges as they will be opportunities for me to learn. I am a self-motivated as well as a people motivated person. At HKBN, I am surrounded by elites, such as the other interns selected from a large pool. This is going to be a great chance for me to improve myself in so many ways. I sure hope to get a feel of that this summer working at HKBN.

Kathy Lee — Legal

Geovanny Lay —Talent Development

I am Geovanny, currently an undergraduate student at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. People find me to be a keen learner, self-motivated team player with excellent communication skills. Having attained this precious opportunity to be hired as one of the 14 elites for HKBN’s Summer Internship, I will thrive my best not only to maximize all of the existing resources but also to contribute to the company. Being currently attached to the Talent and Organization Development Department (TOD), I have gained insights on event planning process, and will continuously try my best to provide “out-of-the-box” ideas for future company events.

Bonnie Young —Enterprise Solutions

I am Bonnie, a final year student of University of Toronto, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Applied Statistics and Translation. This is my first and also will be my last summer internship. I am very proud to be one of the HKBNers and looking forward to this WoW internship in the coming 8 weeks, I hope that we can inspire by each other. Being part of the corporate sales team focusing on banking and financial institutes, I would love to explore both the telecom and financial industries during the internship, that may give me further exposure I need to advance my career in this competitive business world. “If you wait to do everything until you are sure it is right, you will probably never do much of anything”, with this motto, I am not fear of failure but learn from it and do the work to the best of my ability.

Dominic Cheung —Enterprise Solutions

Phipson Lee —Information Technology Hi guys! I am currently a freshman studying at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), pursuing a double major in Cognitive Science and Computer Science. I am interested in programming and computer softwares, but also in psychology research pertaining motivation, creativity, and neuroscience. I believe that my inherent curiosity, intrinsic motivation, and drive to create knowledge can drive innovation and technological advancements at HKBN. As a member of the IT department, the workload often fluctuates according to the projects and sudden testing procedures that we have to facilitate; the schedule thereby becomes really flexible and spontaneous, and it is my duty to adapt, organize my time, while also producing quality work with my colleagues. Though it may feel like a challenge to learn on the spot, I believe it is a skill I am developing and becoming most comfortable with.

I am Dominic, a year two student from Hong Kong Baptist University. Upon immersing myself in this rewarding and invaluable experience at HKBN, I strive to be not just a taker who absorbs knowledge and only seeks to satisfy his own desires and aspirations, but also a giver who can dictate and facilitate the visions and aspirations of HKBN as we move towards an era of technological advancement and innovative fibre-optics. As a taker, through the two-month summer internship program, I want to experience the real-life working environment and try to learn more about my future career path-marketing. Through participating in variegated marketing tasks, I believe I can broaden my horizons by gaining further insight into HKBN’s sales and promotional processes. Adhering to the motto “Pursuit of excellence”, I hope I can finish all the tasks assigned by my department with a very high quality and reduce the workload of my department. Also, I hope I can provide some new insights about the telecom market or some new marketing idea.

I am Teresa, a second year law undergraduate studying at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. There are two reasons for which I am attracted to the programme. Firstly, being particularly interested in commercial law, I would like to observe how a business runs under the current legal system in Hong Kong through the internship. Secondly, I find the core purpose ‘Make our Hong Kong a Better Place to live’ very impressive. I cannot wait to find out how HKBN achieves such goal, and how can I, as an eight-week intern, contribute to it! While for leisure, I love playing the erhu and doing some sports, such as swimming. I hope I will experience and learn a lot about law and commerce this summer.

Lynette Li — Enterprise Solutions

I am Lynette, currently studying in City University of Hong Kong majoring in Business Operations Management. I am honoured to be selected as Summer Intern this year. Being attached this department, I am thrilled to experience how my colleagues demonstrate the core values of the company. They are very responsive to customer's’ concern and resolve fault cases very promptly. It encourages me to keep up with my working attitude. It is also very inspiring to talk to various external parties. It inspired me to develop my innovative thinking apart from technical knowledge. I wish I can achieve this through reaching out and gradually learn to communicate authoritatively.

Hello! I am currently studying sociology at Hanyang University from Korea. I would like to describe myself as a runner. First of all, I enjoy running and run 3 to 4 times every week. Second of all, when I work on something, I keep running to the end to complete like a runner passes the finish line. In addition, while working at HKBN, I want to explore telecommunications industry and feel diversity, enthusiasm from people of HKBN. My motto is ‘to be always responsible and the best’, so I will endeavor to engender excellent results for the company. I am strongly looking forward to the life of upcoming two months and expanding my insight.
