Stress is something we all deal with and more and more research is coming out telling ushow detrimental it is to our health. Intuitively, as you know, stress hurts our performanceand makes us act in ways we would not do if we knew how to control it. Mindfulness and proper breathing is an extremely cost effective way of learning how todeal with your stress and that of your employees. Some of the top companies in the worldusing it are seeing massive drops in health care costs and increases in productivity.Learning to access your breath will allow you to change your mental state. It will allowyou to go from tense and stressed out to calm and relaxed. It gives you the time to stepback from the problem at hand and allow you to look at it with fresh eyes and a newperspective. At Symmetry, we can show you and your employees how to use the breath to improve yourlife. We will put you through a breath session that combines multiple techniques andphilosophies to reveal the power of using only your breath to change your mental andphysical state. We will teach you mindfulness techniques that you can utilize outside ofthe class to center yourself for the day. We will show you techniques to control youremotional response to stress. We will show you how to use the breath to improve sleep. You and your employees will leave with a new awareness of how the breath can impactyour mind and body. While this will improve the well-being of you and your employees, itwill also improve your bottom line. Chronic stress is extremely detrimental to health and well-being. According to the AmericanPsychological Association it costs the U.S. economy over $500 billion a year. Additionally, 60% to80% of workplace accidents are attributed to stress. According to the Harvard Business Review,“health care expenditures at high-pressure companies are nearly 50% greater than at otherorganizations.” In a 2012 survey, 21% of employees reported stress as the main source of errors in their work andmissed deadlines. Additionally, as a result of stress, 15.5% had difficulty getting along withcolleagues, 14.9% missed days at work, and 14.4% said stress made them late. Dr. Leon Chaitow goes into great detail in his book, Recognizing and Treating Breathing Disorders, about how breathing influences every system in your body. Dysfunctional Breathing Patterns(“DBP”), (i.e. breathing into the upper-chest, mainly with the mouth, and not activating thediaphragm) are associated with the body’s stress response, resulting in a chronically stressed state.DBPs are associated with issues such as anxiety, asthma, insomnia, and cardiovascular issues. Current research suggests that “mindfulness training has been shown to reduce the extent to whichemployees experience emotional exhaustion in their jobs.” Mindfulness can decrease physiologicaland psychological concerns such as hypertension, improve brain function, and reduce stress foradded focus
