Bill Johnson’s “toolbag” is loaded with the neces-sary equipment to build a life of faith and blessing. Iwas assured that no ministry that walks in the measure

of revelation that Bill does is accidental, and onceagain, I see the practical ways that the Father has sus-tained him and advanced him in a most remarkableand gifted ministry. I believe it is the basis for who heis and what he does.

INTRODUCTION

It’s time to be strong and of great courage. I don’tknow that there has ever been a time when courageand faith were more needed. But I don’t say thisbecause of the darkness of the hour. That is a given. Isay it because of the realm of God’s promises thatlinger over the Church, waiting for someone to seeit—to believe it—to say yes to what could be!

To live in courage requires encouragement. Andsometimes the only one to encourage you is you. Notknowing how to strengthen ourselves has cost theChurch dearly. It is the key to promotion! It is whatturned David’s darkest hour into the backdoor to thethrone room. And it will be the same for you. Whenyou learn how to strengthen yourself, you will reachyour destiny, fulfill your God-born dreams, and be-come a person who can accurately represent Jesus—re-presenting Jesus to the world.

Chapter 1

THE SECRET

TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

If you want to kill giants,

follow a giant killer!

 15

K ing David towers above all other OldTestament figures in this sense—he isremembered not so much for the great-

ness of his actions, but for the greatness of his heartfor God. His passionate heart set him apart in God’seyes long before he ever won great military victories, before he revolutionized the nature of worship inIsrael, or even ushered in Israel’s Golden Age of eco-nomic and spiritual prosperity. While David was still inobscurity, God saw that he was a man after His ownheart. (See Acts 13:22.)

What was the evidence of David’s heart after God?Scripture indicates two primary aspects of David’s lifebefore he was anointed king. First, when nobody waslooking, when nobody was calling prayer meetings orleading a revival in Judah, David was pouring out hisheart in worship and prayer to God in the fields wherehe tended his father’s sheep. With no one around, his

 17

pursuit of God was motivated by nothing but a desireto know God for His own sake.

David’s relationship with the Lord was highlyunusual for his day because the entire paradigm forworship in Israel at the time was focused on the sacri-fice of animals to temporarily deal with sin, and notthe sacrifice of praise from the heart. His heart ledhim beyond the letter of the law to the heart of theLord, Himself. Secondly, David’s battles against thelion and the bear revealed his heart for God becausehe relied completely on God for victory. This trustindicated that David’s heart for the Lord was notsomething that changed according to his circum-stances. He had integrity of heart. (See 1 Sam. 17:37.)

GROOMED TO REIGN

God did not bring the man after His heart straightfrom the pasture to the palace. Incredibly, David didnot assume the throne until 10-13 years after Samuelhad anointed him to be king. In those interim years,David endured more difficulty, persecution, and rejec-tion than many of us face in a lifetime. He probablydidn’t expect it to take so long to become king.

In contrast, Saul, the previous king, had no suchdifficulty; he was crowned very shortly after beinganointed by Samuel. But God did not want anotherKing Saul. While Saul was truly the best man Israel hadto offer when they demanded a king (see 1 Sam. 8:6),his heart had not been groomed through testingbefore he assumed the throne. As king, Saul was

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 18

entrusted with a measure of anointing to lead thearmies of Israel to victory and shepherd the people.Yet, without the strength of character that only comesby winning private battles, these public victoriesexposed the previously hidden weakness of Saul’sheart toward God. That weakness, combined with hisgrowing appetite for the favor of man, led him tobring glory to himself and disobey the Lord. Saul’suntested heart allowed that which was given to makehim successful, to ultimately destroy him.

So David, even though he already possessed aheart for the Lord, was led into years of testing thatgroomed him to handle the glory and responsibility ofthe throne. The scriptural account of this season inDavid’s life is filled with lessons on the kinds of char-acter tests we all face on the road to fulfilling our des-tiny in God. But the real question—what is it aboutDavid that ultimately qualifies him to become king? What brings about the moment in which God says,“OK, now you’re ready”? I would like to suggest that itwas David’s ability to do something in the face of thedeepest betrayal and rejection imaginable. When hestood completely alone, that is when David “strength-ened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Sam. 30:6).

THE ROLE OF REJECTION

Seeing the progression in the tests David faced isvaluable for understanding the significance of thischoice that became the tipping point for his beingenthroned as king. The following is a “Reader’s Digest”

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

 19

version of David’s life in the years after he wasanointed.

These years actually began with apparent success.David’s unique intimacy with the Lord had already sethim apart and given him what no other man in Israelhad—great courage, fueled by a righteous indignationat the enemies who were taunting the armies of the liv-ing God. David, armor-less and alone, boldly defiedthe odds and ran at Goliath, winning a great victoryover the giant as well as the Philistines. This exploitinstantly earned him favor with the people and KingSaul. As a result, He moved into the palace, becamebest friends with the king’s son, and married theking’s daughter. By all accounts, the fulfillment ofSamuel’s word over him seemed imminent.

But then King Saul got wind of a song that thewomen of the city were singing, “Saul has killed histhousands, and David his ten thousands.” Consumedwith jealousy, he launched a campaign to end David’slife. After dodging Saul’s spears, David painfully cameto terms with the reality that he was going to have toleave Jerusalem to survive. He probably had no ideathat this demonized madman would chase him forover a decade as far away from the throne as possible.Saul’s rejection of him was the first sign that David’sschooling for the kingship was based on testing hisability to believe and walk in the Word over his life, even when the circumstances seemed to completelyoppose and deny his destiny.

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 20

We can see another character test he faced when, after leaving Jerusalem and hiding in several placesfor a while, David rescued the village of Keilah fromthe Philistines. He found out that Saul knew he wasthere, so he asked the Lord whether he would comeafter him, and whether the citizens he had justsaved—his own Jewish brothers—were going to pro-tect him or turn him over to Saul. God said, “He’scoming for you, and they’re going to turn you over.”Rejected again, he headed for the wilderness.

By this time he also had some followers, but theywere “everyone who was in distress, everyone who was indebt, and everyone who was dis-contented…” (1 Sam. 22:2).They were the rejects of soci-ety. David demonstrated atrue king’s heart by embrac-ing these men, and spent thenext ten years or so trainingthem in life and in warfare.Under his leadership, these“rejects” became his “mightymen.” (Interestingly, at leastfour of these men ended upkilling giants, just as David had done. If you want tokill giants, follow a giant killer!) Eventually Davidmoved his men to the land of the Philistines, whoseking gave him a city, Ziklag. From Ziklag, David lednightly raids against the enemies of Israel, convincingthe Philistines he was doing it for them. Then one day

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

 21

If you wantto kill giants,

follow agiant killer!

the Philistines decided to fight Israel. Many of themen wanted to take David along because of his obvi-ous military strength and prowess. But the princes ofthe Philistines wouldn’t let David go, saying that hewould turn on them in the battle and defeat them inorder to get back on Saul’s good side. After this humil-iation, David and his men then returned to Ziklag, only to find it burned and looted by the Amalekites.Every wife, child, and possession was gone.

David’s seriously bad day would have been the laststraw for most of us. He had been rejected by the king, rejected by the Israelites, and even rejected by theirenemies. (You know you’ve had a bad day when thedevil rejects you.) But in this moment, David faces thedeepest and most betraying rejection of all. At thesight of their burned city and missing families, hismighty men—those he’d turned from disenfranchisedto contributing citizens, whom he’d persevered withfor years, and whose families he’d protected and pro-vided for—talked about stoning him. Now even therejected of society had rejected him. David wasrejected, and was about to be killed. There really isn’tmuch difference between their attitude and the com-mon prejudice in our society today: If there’s a prob-lem, get rid of the guy at the top. But this is a deeperinjustice because these men owe their lives to David.

Scripture records what David is feeling in thismoment:

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 22

Now David was greatly distressed, for the peoplespoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the peo-ple was grieved, every man for his sons and hisdaughters… (1 Samuel 30:6).

Without question I would feel “greatly distressed”too if my life is threatened by my closest friends. Buthow does David respond? Does he run for his life?Does he become indignant and start defending hisplace as their leader by reminding them that they owehim their lives? He easily could have done either, butthis is what he did instead:

…But David strengthened himself in the Lord hisGod (1 Samuel 30:6).

THE BACK DOOR TO THE THRONE ROOM

Facing a volatile group of men ready to stone himcaused him not to look to himself for strength but tothe Lord his God. His faith gave him the courage toessentially say, “Come on, guys! We’ve got wives andkids to bring back!” Amazingly, this was all it took toknock the sense back into his men. He simply calledthem back to the purpose and vision for their lives—demonstrating the true character of a strengthenedleader. God gave him the strength to master his owndistress, look past the offense of his men’s rejection, and rally them together to get their families back. When he turned to the men in strength, they pulledthemselves together, went after the Amalekites, andretrieved every person and possession that had beentaken. But David’s personal breakthrough in this

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

 23

moment, his ability to strengthen himself and be faith-ful to his purpose instead of collapsing under pres-sure, not only saved his life, it also enabled him to leadhis men to victory. His breakthrough kept him stand-ing in front of an unseen door that was just about toopen—the door to the throne room. The very battlethe Philistines had just prevented him from fightingwas the battle in which Saul and Jonathan died. Onlya short time later, Israel crowned David king. His dark-est moment led him to the back door of the throneroom.

LEAVING A LEGACY THAT LASTS

The story, of course, does not end there. The truesignificance of David’s promotion from the field tothe throne is seen in his kingly legacy. It would bestunning enough if David had only written the Psalms, established an unprecedented form of worship inJerusalem, designed the Temple, and brought Israelinto its Golden Age; but King David was so importantto God that he was named the forerunner of theMessiah. Jesus, throughout eternity, will be identified asthe Son of David and sit on David’s throne. David waspromoted to a place of such favor and influence withGod that he altered the course of history forever.

David’s life was not set down in Scripture merelyto inspire us. We only need to read the accounts of hissins to know that he was not some kind of superhero.David’s life is really a call to every believer. If one manwho was a sinner who lived hundreds of years before

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 24

the blood of Jesus was shed, could come into thatplace of favor with God, then how much more shouldthose who are covered by that blood be able to comeinto an even greater destiny—to be like Christ and fin-ish His work on the planet? John describes the destinywe’ve received in Jesus in Revelation 5:9-10, the des-tiny all of Heaven is singing about: “…You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribeand tongue and people and nation, and have made us kingsand priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.” Asproof that our position as kings and priests is notsomething less than the position David held, thewriter of Ephesians states that we are seated in Christin heavenly places (see Eph. 2:6). If Jesus is currentlyseated on the throne of David, then so are we!

We are living in a time when the Lord is restoringthis revelation to His people—that the blood of Jesuswas not shed merely to save us from our sins, but torestore us to a relationship with God in which we part-ner with Him as kings and priests to bring the planetunder His rule and reign. We have delegated author-ity to establish His Kingdom wherever the sole of ourfoot treads. But the fact is, while God calls us “kings,”the degree to which we walk in that position is a mat-ter of potential. And as Larry Randolph points out, Godis not responsible for making us reach our potential.A lot of believers think God is not fulfilling theprophetic words over their lives because they havemissed the fact that the word was pointing to theirpotential, which requires their participation. God won’t

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

 25

fulfill your potential because He wants you to becomea mature believer who thinks and acts like Him out ofyour own free will. Mature believers are those He cantrust with the secrets of His heart because they will notuse the favor He gives for their own purposes, but forHis.

INCREASED FAVOR SECURES OUR DESTINY

Some of us who have been raised in a democraticsociety may struggle with the idea that God gives morefavor to some people than others. God’s favor is notthe same as His love. You cannot do anything tochange the vastness of God’s love for you. But evenJesus Himself had to grow “…in favor with God andman” (Luke 2:52). This verse amazes me. I can under-stand the fact that He needed to grow in favor withman, but why did He have to grow in favor with God?He was perfect in every way. The answer lies in the factthat Jesus did everything He did as a man, laying Hisdivinity aside, in order to be a model for us. There-fore, He, like David, had to be tested. At His baptism,He received His anointing as the Spirit descended onHim and remained, and He was declared by theFather to be the Son of God. But instead of launchingright into His ministry, He was led by the Spirit intothe wilderness. There He was tested by the enemy, specifically in the area of the Word that had just beenspoken over Him. If you look at the account of Jesus’temptation in Luke, you’ll notice that He goes intothe wilderness “filled with the Holy Spirit” and He

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 26

returns “in the power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:1,14).Because He passed the test, the expression of the wordover His life, the favor to walk in His potential, wasreleased in a greater measure.

The “favor” that Jesus grew in is the word charis, which refers to the divine grace and ability of GodHimself that comes upon and enables a person toaccomplish His purposes. As Jesus modeled, each ofus must grow in favor if we are going to fulfill our des-tiny in God. But favor, because it is so glorious andpowerful, is a weighty thing. Thus, God, in His mercy, gives you His favor in the measure your character canhandle, taking you from glory to glory, faith to faith, and strength to strength.

THE PURPOSE AND PRIORITY

OF MINISTERING TO YOURSELF

David’s life shows us that the ability to strengthenand minister to ourselves is a vital skill that we mustlearn if we are going to develop the character to fulfillour potential as kings and priests. It is impossible foranyone to reach his ultimate destiny in life withoutlearning to minister to himself. We can best appreci-ate the significance of this ability by understandingthe nature of the role to which we are called. WhenScripture says “we shall reign on the earth” (Rev. 5:10),the implication is that every one of us has a destiny tostand in a position where we influence people aroundus. Each of us will have a different size and kind ofsphere of influence, but we are all called as leaders in

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

 27

society. We are not called to “rule over others” in thesense of domination. In God’s Kingdom, the power ofrule is the divine enablement to serve others moreeffectively. And just as kings are to provide protectionand prosperity for their citizens, so those who servewell in God’s Kingdom will offer safety and blessing toall who come under their influence.

Perhaps the first quality that distinguishes a leaderis initiative. God knew David would succeed as a leaderbecause he took the initiative to seek Him in thesecret place. This is the same quality of maturity thatHe is looking for in us. To experience the positivepeer pressure and momentum of a move of God in acorporate group is wonderful. But those who seekGod’s face and pursue His destiny for their lives whennobody is around, are the people who possess the ini-tiative required to strengthen themselves. If they learnto sustain their initiative to seek God by strengtheningthemselves in testing, they will be the people who willexperience the personal breakthroughs that release acorporate blessing to those around them.

God wants us to learn how to strengthen ourselvesthrough Him because developing our skills will pro-mote spiritual longevity. We need longevity becauseour destiny and potential cannot be attained in a fewyears; they extend to the end of our lifetime here onearth. For this reason, I like to tell the students in ourSchool of Supernatural Ministry, “Anyone can burnfor God for a year. Come back in twenty years, take me

Strengthen Yourself in the Lord

 28

out to coffee, and tell me you’re still burning.” Then Ispend much of the school year teaching them thetools I’ve learned for strengthening myself. It’s obvi-ous that the students possess enough initiative to paythe price to come to school; but without discoveringand using tools to minister to themselves, they won’t,I’m convinced, be able to sustain the desire thatbrought them initially. Sadly, I know too manyChristian leaders who lack this ability, and as a resultare suffering from burnout or moral failure.

Now, let me be clear that learning to strengthenourselves does not mean that we develop an independ-ent lifestyle. Our lifestyle as believers is always focusedon serving, loving, and leaning on the Body of Christ. But for the sake of becoming mature and growing infavor so that we can bless those around us, God bringsmoments into our lives when we have to stand alone indifficulty and testing. God will even blind the eyes anddeafen the ears of our closest friends in thosemoments so we can learn to minister to ourselves. Wemust recognize this because I know a lot of believerswho fall into bitterness, thinking their friends are fail-ing them in a hard time. Understanding God’s prior-ity to teach us this lesson helps us to avoid that trap.

VICTORY AS A LIFESTYLE

This book is written to share the tools that theLord has taught me to use to strengthen myself. Mypurpose is not to make an exhaustive list of tools inthe Scripture, but to show you the things that have

THE SECRET TO DAVID’S PROMOTION

brought me through tough days in the trenches. Asyou read about the things that God has put in yourarsenal, my desire is that the conviction of the destinyover your life will be more deeply rooted in yourheart. He has equipped you for great victory—not justmerely to break through, but to release and establishthe dominion of God around you. However, it’s yourresponsibility to use these tools to bring strength toyourself so you can stand in that victory. The invitationof a lifetime is before you—an invitation to walk in aplace of favor where you co-labor with God and makehistory as a king and priest of His choosing. Let’s riseto the challenge!
