My thanks to all the volunteers who worked so
hard to make the Trial Day a resounding success,
without everyone pitching in and helping on these
days the Trials would not run as smoothly as they
do. Many people worked extremely hard on the
day but a few people need a special mention.

BARK FOR LIFE
Pooches pound pavement for Cancer COUncil
The special love and care that only a canine best friend can provide will be celebrated at
Bark For Life, an Australian-first fundraising event where dogs and their human pals can
team up to support Cancer Council Victoria.
Bark For Life is the first fundraising event in the country that honours the caring qualities of dogs during a
cancer experience. The daytime event is an offshoot of the popular Relay For Life and will be held for the first
time at Jells Park in Wheelers Hill on Sunday 11th October, 2015.
Canines aren't just for cuddles. Research shows that not only do dogs provide companionship for those with
cancer but they can also lower their owner's blood pressure, decrease stress and anxiety, improve their owner's
mood, increase their levels of activity and act as a social magnet - all of which can aid in cancer treatment and
recovery.
At today's event launch Cancer Council Victoria Fundraising Director Andrew Buchanan said: "Dog owners
know their best friends are there no matter what happens. Bark For Life is a chance for all of us to give thanks
to the four-legged supporters who are there for the almost 30,000 Victorians diagnosed with cancer each year,
while raising vital funds for cancer research, prevention and support.
"I'd encourage dog lovers from across Victoria to gather the pack, and start barking back against cancer at this
unique event."
Bark For Life is an exciting new initiative of
Cancer Council Victoria to celebrate the
relationship between cancer survivors and their
dogs. The inaugural Australian Bark For Life will
bring together dogs and their human companions
to raise vital funds to support Cancer Council
Victoria. Each dollar raised through Bark For Life
will help fund research, prevention programs and
support services for those affected by a cancer
diagnosis.
The special dog themed Relay will be a shorter
version of the popular overnight Relay For Life
event so dogs and their owners can enjoy a walk
whilst celebrating cancer survivors and
remembering loved ones lost.
The inspirational and empowering experience will
take place at Jells Park South in Wheelers Hill on
Sunday 11th
October.
Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa Westphal was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2007, and her Staffy-cross Spike kept her
company throughout her treatment. "When I was having a bad day, just the simple act of patting Spike helped
me stay positive. During six months of treatment my husband and kids would go to work and school leaving me
home - but I was never really alone as Spike would always be there to keep me company."
Spike also played a significant role in Lisa's recovery, and helped her on the way to becoming cancer-free. "As
my strength built up, he was a great excuse to go to the park for short walks and over time I built up my energy
with longer walks," she said. Lisa is now fully recovered, and manages the Relay for Life program at Cancer
Council Victoria.
Getting involved in Bark For Life is easy. People can register online, get fundraising and gather together on
October 11 to complete a walk to honour cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and celebrate the caring
qualities of dogs during a cancer experience.
The event will also feature dog activities, dress up contests, team and community fundraising activities, music
and food.

(1) A single election may be held to fill all of those positions.

must declare each of those members to be elected to the position.

held in accordance with rule 55 if so required by a majority of the members present.
Alternatively voting will be by a show of hands.

Annual General Meeting
The Club’s Constitution requires that an Annual General Meeting be held within 5 months of the end of
the club’s financial year. This year the NODC financial year ends on 30 September 2015.
To comply with this requirement the club will hold its AGM on Sunday 29 November 2015.
Members often do not appreciate the need to attend these meetings however in order to hold a valid
meeting a quorum of 5% of members entitled to vote is required.
The main business of the AGM concerns the election of the next Committee which consists of the
following:
The Committee consists of Office Bearers—
(a) a President; and
(b) a Vice-President; and
(c) a Secretary; and
(d) a Treasurer; and
(e) ordinary members up to a maximum of 10.
(The four Office Bearers of the Committee must be financial members of the Victorian
Canine Association Incorporated. Committee members must have each been a
voting member of NODC for 3 months prior to election.)
The Constitution can be read on the NODC web page however for those who are interested
S52 provides that during a period commencing two months prior to the
AGM and ending one week prior to the AGM an eligible person may
nominate for a position on the Committee.
Should the number of nominations be less than the maximum allowed those nominated
will be deemed elected. Other vacant positions may be filled at the AGM in
accordance with S 54 which details the voting procedure.
As the nomination period will commence at the end of September 2015 members who are
interested in nominating should ensure that their membership is financial at the time of
the AGM.
Membership renewal is due on 1 October 2015 and, although the club allows a 3 month
grace period for renewal, members must be financial to nominate for the Committee and
also to vote at the AGM.
Committee members play an important part in running the club on behalf of the members
and people are needed to take office bearer roles such as President, Secretary and
Treasurer as well as general roles arranging social events and dog competition events.

At that point I have to zip my mouth, after all it's not my dog and I don't know the details, but I start asking myself why would a dog not come back to the KEEPER OF THE TREAT BOX, the BELLY SCRATCHER, the EVERY
DAY SANTA who has squeaky toys in at least 3 pockets, the FUN MACHINE?
Let's go back to basics and see if a step got missed out which might help. If you start from the premise that dogs love to play and sniff their “p-Mail”, and in their experience, these wonderful activities stop when they return when called, then it is not difficult to understand why a dog is not happy to return.
However if my handler only touches my collar or puts my lead on for 3 seconds and then takes it off and tells me to go play again, that's all OK! This simple trick should be done the moment a puppy takes their place in your home. Sit down somewhere quiet where you can control the environment with toys or another dog and tell the dog to go play, then call your dog back to you and reward him/her. This can involve food treats, a special toy, or you rolling around on the floor making silly noises ready to tickle returning pup. Who said owning a dog wasn't dignified?
If you have a dog which can be a little wilful or you are uncertain how far away to let them go, perhaps a long lead can be used to keep control whilst allowing freedom to build up the distance. Remember the hairball on the end of the line is not a fish to be reeled in. The aim is you are the FUN FACTORY and the dog wants to
come to you.
Continue this call back activity throughout the dogs’ active life to reinforce that you are the best thing since sliced bread or mobile phones.
A few things to remember with the COME command. Use it sparingly as it can lose its power if continually repeated and avoid chasing your dog if they disobey the
command, as you would just be creating a great fun game. Try to avoid using it in association with something the dog dislikes like grooming or you leaving it in isolation. And never use it when you are angry!
There are many reasons why an owner is uncomfortable letting their dog off lead in a safe area... “My dog was attacked once”; “my dog doesn't like other dogs”, are just the tip of the iceberg, but many of these are solvable with assistance and patience.
Read and feel free to ask questions... and enjoy the best recall every day, when your dog rushes to greet you when you come home.

Glyn Burnup THE RUNAWAY DOG
Looks like Spring is on the way and so it's more fun to be out and about with the pooch. Hope PAWS for THOUGHT is helping with the odd problem.
It is surprising how many people won't let their dog off lead in a lead free
area and give the following reasons ........ My dog won't come back or it will run away.

Robert’s job is done on a voluntary basis and is time and labour intensive. It also means
that he always has to be present whenever the club is open.
HELP NEEDED
It is essential therefore that members help where appropriate with setting up the puppy
agility equipment and after class by loading it back into the trailer. Buckets of water also
need to be filled, taken out and returned. Any volunteers please speak to Robert.
AROUND THE CLUB
