TO CELEBRATE A DAZZLING DECADEAn anniversary to remember, a decade we’ll never forget. Celebrate the first stage of the Music Center at Strathmore: ten years spent sheltering, showcasing, and celebrating the arts.

Mark your calendar for the Annual Spring Gala on Saturday, April 25, 2015 and plan to join us and a very special guest performer as we celebrate not only the first ten years, but the decades we envision ahead as Strathmore continues to shape artistic expression in Montgomery County.

GET CLOSER…AND SEE OUR NEW LOOK!As we move into the start of the Music Center’s second decade, we’ve updated our brand to better illustrate the dynamic diversity, cutting edge creativity, and intimate experiences Strathmore has always been committed to providing.

The Strathmore experience is about more than a performance. It awakens the creative in all of us, blurs the line between artist and audience, and fuses together the diversity of a community.

In this issue of Strathmore News, you’re getting the first peek at our new logo, colors, and look. We hope it speaks to you! Keep an eye out as we roll out much more (including a new website) in the coming months.

THIS JUST IN! Music legends and modern masters: it all comes together at Strathmore

NEW CLASS, NEW OPPORTUNITIESSAME POWERFUL TRADITIONA decade of nurturing artists’ careers, the launch of a new institute, and a peek at this year’s class.By Betty Scott

Education and music—these subjects have shaped so much of my life. Growing up I heard stories about my great-grandfathers who were music teachers and about the time my grandmother sold a cow for $40 so she could buy an organ to accompany the family while they sang hymns.

There is no denying what’s in your blood—and the rhythms of music and desire to share knowledge course through my veins. These two great loves have guided me to my current position. After retiring from 40 years as an elementary school vocal teacher with Prince George’s County Public Schools, I found my way to Strathmore.

It was 10 years ago when I first arrived at Strathmore. Our Artistic Director Shelley Brown had the idea to create an Artists in Residence (AIR) program—a class of outstanding young local musicians that we would pair with established mentors and nurture on the road to success as performing artists. Since then, the AIR program has expanded on traditional artist-in-residence models to offer a new depth of artistic and practical education for talented emerging artists. We’ve included music business seminars, commissioned new work from each AIR and their mentors, encouraged cross-genre collaborations among members of each class, and guided every participant in the development

of an educational outreach program that dovetails with Strathmore’s mission.

Fifty-eight Artists in Residence later, our program stands for everything Strathmore represents. Being chosen as an AIR is considered one of our area’s highest honors.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Strathmore’s AIR program, we are proud to unveil a new formal home for the program: the Strathmore Institute for Artistic and Professional Development, which will serve as an umbrella for all of the unique experiences we offer budding artists.

A new decade dawns, and a new class arrives at the Strathmore Institute for Artistic and Professional Development. We’re proud to present this year’s incredibly talented class, and we hope to see you in the Mansion Music Room for their concerts from January through June!

Thank you to our generous Artist in Residence program sponsors: invoke’s residency is sponsored in part by Nancy Chasen and Donald Spero. Christian Perez’s residency is sponsored in part by J. Alberto Martinez, M.D. Rochelle Rice’s residency is sponsored in part by Effie and John Macklin. Mark Meadows’s residency is sponsored in part by Mrs. Patricia Haywood Moore and Dr. Roscoe Moore, Jr. Alex Young’s residency is sponsored in part by Dale S. Rosenthal.

“Not just the artistic partners who are housed in the Music Center, but the devoted community of supporters—art lovers, ticket buyers, friends, neighbors, students—whose interest in Strathmore is deep and proprietary.”

“We have people who bring friends and family from far and wide,” she notes. “People see Strathmore as their home, and that wonderful sense of ownership defines us. We are always aware that this is our community.”

Jeffries Hazangeles points out that while the celebration of the Music Center at Strathmore’s tenth anniversary centers around a physical entity—one of the area’s most beautiful and acoustically perfect venues, where world class performances by the top artists in a host of genres are par for the course and where the community comes together to celebrate the arts—so much of what makes Strathmore special is what happens beyond the Music Center walls.

“The connections we’ve made in the community, that’s what makes us unique,” she explains. “And our plan is to deepen those connections.”

To that end the Artist in Residence (AIR) program is being expanded and incorporated into the new Strathmore Institute for Artistic and Professional Development. Outreach to community and the already-robust coordination with Montgomery County Public Schools—educational workshops and programs that expose students to music—will be amped up as Strathmore develops deeper content for Title I schools in the surrounding area. Strathmore is also stretching beyond its current physical footprint with the opening of AMP, a new intimate venue opening this spring in Rockville’s Pike & Rose development.

“It’s about going beyond walls,” says Pfanstiehl. “Going out into the community, making connections, and interacting in a way that creates opportunities for our artists, our audiences, and our partners.”

“The 10th anniversary of the Music Center is a reminder that we can’t get comfortable,” he adds. “We have to remain open—to synchronicity, to serendipity.

“If you are prepared, you are able to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.”

Synchronicity, Serendipity, and the Art of Evolving Gracefully.By Chris Slattery

In the beginning there was Strathmore Hall—the mansion on the hill, the place where art lived.

It had a history of its own: Over the course of a hundred years the Colonial Revival manor and grounds had evolved from a gracious home into a sanctuary for the arts. Indeed, by the time it was dedicated as Montgomery County’s first center for the arts and opened to the public in 1983, “Strathmore” was a name already synonymous with everything elevated, artistic, and sublime.

Then came the Music Center.

“It’s hard for me to imagine Montgomery County without Strathmore,” says Eliot Pfanstiehl, CEO and founder of the Strathmore Hall Foundation. “A whole generation hasn’t known anything else—and just imagine what the next generation will think!”

Imagining what the next generation will think has been Pfanstiehl’s modus operandi for the last quarter of a century. The Montgomery County native has been

a visionary, breaking ground on the 1,976-seat Music Center in 2001; cutting the ribbon in February 2005—and planning, already, for what the next 10 years will bring.

It’s a journey he envisions gaining ever more momentum as the Music Center at Strathmore moves not just forward but outward, an integrated entity that encompasses the resident partners—Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Strathmore, National Philharmonic, Washington Performing Arts, Levine School of Music, CityDance, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras, and InterPLAY—and ripples out into the community like some rapidly expanding artistic universe. The future of Strathmore is non-linear; it’s synergistic, exciting, and limitless.

“It has to do with energy,” says Strathmore’s president, Monica Jeffries Hazangeles. “Each of the organizations that came into the building with us—and is taking this journey now—is invested deeply in the relationship. Together we are helping elevate everyone’s visibility, leveraging everyone’s assets.”

At Strathmore we’re all about world class performances, artistic excellence, educational outreach, and the celebration of diversity and inclusion. Which might just explain why we’re such big fans of Savion Glover!

He’s a dancer, actor, drummer, teacher—a choreographer, educator, and visionary beyond compare. Acclaimed for his appearances on Broadway, in movies, and on television, Savion takes the concept of being a triple threat and kicks it—stepz it—taps it up a notch…or two or three.

Savion kicks off the Music Center’s 10th Anniversary week on Friday, February 6 with his new production, STePz. Backed by an electrifying soundtrack that includes the music of Prince, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane; Glover and his ensemble of virtuosic dancers take tap to new heights.

Here are FIVE things we absolutely love about the Tap Dance Kid who grew up to be a star!

Savion started tap dancing when he was seven years old—he was already a veteran performer, having played the drums in a band called Three Plus One.

After making his Broadway debut in The Tap Dance Kid at the tender age of 10, Savion became one of the youngest-ever Tony award nominees for his role in Black and Blue at age 15.

“Savion is possibly the best tap dancer that ever lived,” says Savion’s teacher, mentor (and fellow contender for the “best tap dancer that ever lived” crown) Gregory Hines.

From 1991 to 1995, Savion was a regular on “Sesame Street.” Who else could get a Muppet to dance?

He’s got the happiest feet ever: Savion choreographed the adorable penguin Mumble for 2006’s Happy Feet and its sequel, Happy Feet 2.

“I do dance education, versus dance class.”

– Savion Glover
