2019 WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated in over 100 countries. In

Australia it is celebrated on Friday 25 October. World Teachers’

Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly

complex, multicultural and technological society. It is a day on

which students, parents and community members can

demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that

teachers have made to their community, maybe with some

kind words, a gesture or a letter.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the Stradbroke Koalas Sub Junior Netball

Team for their Grand Final win on Saturday 21 September

CANTEEN

Welcome back to Term 4, I hope everyone had an enjoyable

break from the normal routine of school!

TERM 4 MENU: As we head into the warmer months, we are

replacing our winter wedges packs with fruit salad $4.00,

which is a combination of seasonal fruit. Time permitting, we

will try to provide smaller fruit salads over the counter, or

selections of cut up fruit or fresh squeezed juices. This term we

will also reintroduce the very popular Slushies $2.00 per cup.

The flavours will be "Pine Lime" and "Sour Grape". The Granita

slushy mix that we use is 99% apple juice. Students can order

a combination of the two flavours if they wish.

FRIDAYS SPECIALS: This Friday 18 October, we will be finishing

the Yiros and Pasta from Term 3. We have limited amounts of

both, so depending on demand, we may contact your child for

an alternative choice. As next Friday 25 October is a Pupil Free

Day, we will advertise future Friday lunch specials in the next

newsletter and update Qkr accordingly.

WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL ICE BLOCK SALES: The Canteen

will once again be open afterschool on Wednesday afternoons

until 3.30pm to buy ice blocks and slushies. I would appreciate

any help with serving during this time.

LIBRARY

We are excited to trial a

subscription for Wheelers

ePlatform – an audio book and

ebook platform that allows

Year 3-7 Stradbroke students

and staff access to ebooks

online both at school and at

home. This is not intended to

replace our children accessing

physical books, but to extend

their options and the way they access reading material. The

possibilities are endless including listening to books during

eating times, while drawing or building, to sample books

before borrowing or to support students to access books

outside of their reading ability (audio books are great for this).

There are also settings that support dyslexia (we suggest these

settings for everyone) and the ability to save notes or highlight

sections of the text.

Using Wheelers at home is optional and will use home internet

data, so please consider and monitor your child's access to this

resource. Like accessing physical books, we recommend that

you are aware of the texts your child is choosing to read or

listen to and consider their suitability. There are restrictions

per year level, but book choice is personal and may look

different for each family.

The website is:

https://stradsch.eplatform.co/ or you can download the app

'ePlatform' and search for Stradbroke School. Student login

and password is the same as their school computer login and

password.

Happy Reading!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 2020

Beginner students

Stradbroke School is fortunate to be able to

offer specialist instrumental music lessons

for Year 3-7 students. These 30 minute

lessons are conducted by DECD Instrumental

Music teachers during normal lesson time.

These lessons are available to students not

receiving tuition privately. We offer violin, viola and cello for

Years 3-7 and classical guitar for Years 5-7 students. We are

now accepting expressions of interest for beginners in 2020. If

your child would like to learn an instrument and will be in Year

3-7 in 2020, please collect a form from Kathy in the Front Office

and return it by Friday 11th November. An audition/interview

process (no previous experience necessary) will be held in late

November/early December and available vacancies allocated.

Students who have private lessons for an instrument are not

eligible for IMS lessons for the same instrument but can be

considered for the string ensemble.

Continuing students

By now you would have received an Instrumental Music

Continuing Student form for 2020 sent home this week. If your

child would like to continue learning an instrument in 2020 a

completed form needs to be submitted giving parental

consent. If you have not received a form, copies are available

from Kathy in the Front Office. If your child does not want to

continue in 2020, please advise Kathy via email at

[email protected] with Instrumental Music 2020

as the subject line.

IB PYP EVALUATION 2020 – PARENT SURVEY

In June 2020 Stradbroke will be undergoing an evaluation of

our Primary Years Programme. The aim of an evaluation is to

evaluate the extent to which the school is meeting the

International Baccalaureate standards and practise. The

process helps us to improve implementation by identifying

strengths and weaknesses, and determining areas for future

focus. The self-study process begins in the year prior to the

evaluation. During that time all community members will

reflect on the programme implementation at Stradbroke

considering where we excel, where we have shown growth and

what needs additional attention. This is based on the

perspectives of teachers, school leaders, SSOs, students,

parents and community members.

A survey has been designed to gain feedback from the parents

of our community. We would appreciate you taking the time

to fill it out. This will be used, along with other evidence

gathered, to rate the

implementation of

each practice. Surveys

have been emailed out

randomly to families –

if you did not receive a

link but would like to

give feedback please

use the QR code– this

survey can be

completed on a phone

or tablet.

If you have any questions about the survey or the evaluation

please contact Sarah Button, IB senior leader.

Placement of Children

in Classes for 2020

Planning for next year’s classes will begin soon. In making recommendations about class composition, teachers consider

factors such as:

• learning needs

• gender balance

• year level balance

• social and emotional maturity

• children with special needs and talents

• social dynamics (which children to keep together and

which to keep apart)

• friendship groups

• the number of children per class.

Parent Information

Parents are invited to write a short letter to the Principal if you have specific information about the needs of your child.

Please include your child’s name, current year level and each student’s requirements on a separate page (not one family

letter).

Please do not make requests for a specific teacher. Due to enrolment numbers it is highly likely we will have composite

classes, please do not make requests for your child to be or not be in a composite class. Please be aware that not all requests

can be met, in past years some letters have included 5-6 specific requests for one child and it is very unlikely that these can

all be accommodated. If you do have more than one request please write them in priority order so that we know which

aspects of your request are most important to you.

• Please place your letter in an envelope addressed to Tanya Scanlan.

• Parent letters are due by 4pm on Wednesday 30th October.

• Parent information will be considered along with factors considered by our teachers and those listed above.

• Only information based on educational criteria will be considered.

• A copy of your letter will be made available to the class teachers who make the placements.

Classroom teachers use a range of processes to ask children to nominate friends with whom they wish to be placed. As it’s

extremely difficult for us to deal with contradictory information from students and parents, it’s preferable that parents don’t

write about friendship requests to us, unless there are serious issues.

At this stage class structures are not definite and the final allocation of teachers to classes, which will take place late in the

term, is affected by the appointment of teachers.

Who makes the final decision?

Staff will do their best to meet your child's needs. You can be assured that we spend a great deal of time and effort in

accommodating and allocating children to classes.

It is the responsibility of the Principal to make the final decision on classes and placement of students.

At times it may not be in the child's best interests to be placed according to parent requests and

we will discuss this with you wherever possible.

When will children and parents know about class placements?

If possible, class placement information will be sent home with students in the last week of term.

After that date children's class placements will not be changed unless there are extenuating circumstances.

If you wish to take advantage of the opportunity to provide information about your child, please ensure that all requests are

forwarded to the Principal no later than 4pm on Wednesday 30th October 2019.

Kind regards,

Tanya Scanlan

Principal
